  • Problems with oracle character set

    Hi,
    We use weblogic SP2 and a oracle oci driver to connect to a database. When we tried to store a text file within the database, we found that all the '£' signs in the file are converted to question marks.
    Looking at the NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS table in the database suggests that we are using AL32UTF8 as the character set. I have since tried setting the NLS_LANG variable on the application server to use the same character set but this doesn't seem to solve the problem.
    Any experts out there know how I can fix this problem?
    Thanks!

    Hi Yash,
    Can u tell me how to insert values in a nchar/nvarchar column in
    Indian language scripts?
    I have set database characterset to 'IN8ISCII'? But while
    inserting values in the table I am getting error as characterset
    mismatch'
    I have tried it using UTF8 chracterset also??
    As fa as your problem is concerened, I think u have to set the
    nls_ characterset value$ in props$ table
    and same for nls_nchar_characterset column also..
    Thanks in advance

  • Character set conversion UTF-8 -- ISO-8859-1 generates question mark (?)

    I'm trying to convert an XML-file in UTF-8 format to another file with character set ISO-8859-1.
    My problem is that the ISO-8859-1 file generates a question mark (?) and puts it as a prefix in the file.
    ?<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <ns0:messagetype xmlns:ns0="urn:olof">
    <underkat>testvrde</underkat>
    </ns0:messagetype>
    Is there a way to do the conversion without getting the question mark?
    My code looks as follows:
    public class ConvertEncoding {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              String from = "UTF-8", to = "ISO-8859-1";
              String infile = "C:\\temp\\infile.xml", outfile = "C:\\temp\\outfile.xml";
              try {
                   convert(infile, outfile, from, to);
              } catch (Exception e) {
                   System.out.println(e.getMessage());
                   System.exit(1);
         private static void convert(String infile, String outfile,
                                            String from, String to)
                             throws IOException, UnsupportedEncodingException
              //Set up byte streams
              InputStream in = null;
              OutputStream out = null;
              if(infile != null) {
                   in = new FileInputStream(infile);
              if(outfile != null) {
                   out = new FileOutputStream(outfile);
              //Set up character streams
              Reader r = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in, from));
              Writer w = new BufferedWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(out, to));
              /*Copy characters from input to output.
               * The InputSreamreader converts
               * from Unicode to the output encoding.
               * Characters that cannot be represented in
               * the output encoding are output as '?'
              char[] buffer = new char[4096];
              int len;
              while((len = r.read(buffer))!= -1) { //Read a block of output
                   w.write(buffer, 0, len);
              r.close();
              w.flush();
              w.close();
    }

    Yes the next character is the '<'
    The file that I read from is generated by an integration platform. I send a plain file to it (supposedly in UTF-8 encoding) and it returns another file (in between I call my java class that converts the characterset from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1). The file that I get back contains the '' if the conversion doesn't work and '?' if the conversion worked.
    My solution so far is to skip the first "junk-characters" when reading from the inputstream. Something like:
    private static final char UTF_BOM = '\uFEFF'; //UTF-BOM = ?
    String from = "UTF-8", to = "ISO-8859-1";
    if (from != null && from.toLowerCase().startsWith("utf-")) { //Are we reading an UTF encoded file?
    /*Read first character of the UTF-Encoded file
    It will return '?' in the first position if we are dealing with UTF encoding If ? is returned we skip this character in the read
    try {
    r.mark(1); //Only allow to read one char for the reset function to work
    char c;
    int i = r.read();
    c = (char) i;
    if (String.valueOf(UTF_BOM).equalsIgnoreCase(String.valueOf(c))) {
    r.reset(); //reset to start position
    r.skip(1); //Skip first character when reading from the stream
    else {
    r.reset();
    } catch (IOException e) {
    e.getMessage();
    //return null;
    }

  • Turkish character set problem in Windows

    Hi;

  • Problem with national characters on windows client

    All national data stored in NVARCHAR2 colums, applications (.net) works fine,
    but in sqlplus:

    - everything ok, sqlplus shows national characters
    select dump(N'<national symbols>') from dual

    Client (windows server 2003, oracle client 10):
    NLS_LANG = RUSSIAN_CIS.CL8MSWIN1251

    N'<national symbols>', being part of an SQL statement, will be converted to the database character set (WE8ISO8859P1) before being parsed. Only if the client and the database are both 10.2 or higher, the client can encode the literal appropriately so that it survives this conversion.
    In earlier versions, you can do the encoding yourself. Instead of the N'<national symbols>' literal use the UNISTR function: UNISTR('\xxxx\yyyy\zzzz'), where U+xxxx, U+yyyy, U+zzzz are Unicode code points of your national characters.

  • Query distributed database with different character sets.

    Hello experts, this is my situation:
    I have two databases A and B, the same version 11.1.0.7, the same OS Suse Linux Enterprise 10 but with different character sets, A has WE8MSWIN1252 while B has AL32UTF8. The database B is my XML DB repository so there I have some XML type tables. I need to query this tables from the database A using a dblink and in fact I have done that but the XML content is trasformed due to the different character sets between the databases. Some time there are data loss and some time there are data missmatch.
    Is there any way to query the tables stored in the database B without problems? I do not know if the following is correct: Maybe I can set the character set for the session in the database A during the time it query the database B. That is, change the character set in fly at session level.
    Do you have any special suggestion?
    I hope you can help me, thank you in advance.

    The Globalization Support Guide for 11.1.0.7 has a chapter on character set migration that should be helpful. AL32UTF8 is a superset of WE8MSWIN1252 but it is not a strict superset. That is, it doesn't meet the second prong of the test in the documentation
    The new character set is a strict superset of the current character set if:
    Each and every character in the current character set is available in the new character set.
    Each and every character in the current character set has the same code point value in the new character set. For example, many character sets are strict supersets of US7ASCII.Exporting the data from the A, changing the character set (or creating a new database with the AL32UTF8 character set), and then importing the data may be the easiest approach in your case.

  • Problems with shutdown, expose and window switching

    Hi there,
    Recently I've been having a few issues with OS X. First of all it wasn't shutting down properly -- the menu bar would disappear and it would look like it was going to shutdown, but it never did. I could move down to the dock (on auto-hide) and it would re-appear, at which point I can bring up a terminal window and use 'shutdown' to do the job. On startup I'd reset the PRAM, and then do a disk-check, but the problem keeps coming back.
    Subsequently, I've also been having problems with expose and switching windows (i.e. command-tab). Namely, neither of them work. Expose won't fire from either hot corners or the keyboard, and if I re-launch the app from the Apps folder (without trying to kill it first, I should say), it does nothing. Cmd-tab gets interpreted as just tab, and the keyboard shortcut for dashboard also fails (although I can start the dashboard from the dock).
    I read in another post about an invalid jpeg in the downloads folder being able to cause the Expose problem (seems like a most unlikely bug?). Anyway, I cleared all pictures from my downloads folder and functionality came back, but now it's gone again. It's really very frustrating as it makes moving between windows a lot more hassle.
    Any thoughts would be gratefully received.
    TIA,
    Mat

    This sounds interesting.
    Can you post a copy for the rest of us to see?
    As for actually helping you, and not just satisfying our curiousity, if you start cutting pieces of the code you will probably end up finding the source of the problem (and we won't have too big a program to handle). Since DSC is a likely suspect, you may want to start there.
    Also, are you creating an installer and using that to install? If not, you may wish to try that.

  • Problem With Captivate 4 and Windows 8

    Hi,
    I've a problem with Captivate 4 on Windows 8 projects :
    The mouse is not tracked.
    I've applied the last patch for this version (11/15/2011).
    Is there another patch for this ?
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi there
    I know this will come off as sounding snarky, but please know it's honestly not intended that way,
    Windows 8?
    I never was able to make Captivate 4 run successfully on Windows 7. So I'm not the least bit surprised to hear it has issues with Windows 8!
    Personally, I'm thinking you are due for an upgrade to Captivate if you want it to work on Windows 8. But then again, I'm not even certain if Captivate 6 is Windows 8 compatible.
    Cheers... Rick

  • URGENT Problem with Greek Character from an Oracle database

    Hello, I am having a serious and urgent problem with the character settings of an oracle database (8.1.7). The database is sitting in a solaris unix server and when we run the env command we have the following in the NLS_LANG parameter: AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1 (I do not know if this is helpful). When I retrieve data from oracle database (through a VB.NET 2005 program)to a dataset I use a special font in order to see the greek characters (HELLASARIAL). But when I am trying to save these data to a TXT file the greek characters are like Chinese to us. I tried several encodings (System.Text.Encoding.GetEncoding(869)) but without success. Can someone tell me how to convert the oracle greek characters during the selection or during the saving to the TXT file?
    Please respond as fast as you can.
    Thanks in advance

    Here is the answer of the microsoft:
    I have the information that you have a VB.Net 2005 application connected to an Oracle database 8.1.7.4 hosted on a UNIX server.
    This database has the CharacterSet WE8ISO8859P1.
    When retrieving Greek characters from this database in the application, you cannot see them.
    Could you please send me a screenshot of these characters in the .Net application?
    Are they displayed as gibberish, or as inverted questions marks (?)?
    I already had similar cases with Hebrew characters hosted on an Oracle database.
    These characters were displayed as questions marks on the client side.
    This is due to the fact that System.Data.OracleClient is using the Server CharacterSet to display the characters.
    If your Greek characters are not stored in the WE8ISO8859P1 characterset, then they won’t display correctly on the client-side.
    This is different from OLEDB where you could interact on client side by modifying the NLS_LANG parameter in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME0.
    The client NLS_LANG and the server CharacterSet had to match in order to correctly display the data, and avoid SQL*NET conversion.
    So there are two solutions to your case:
    - The first one is to create a new database using the P8 characterset. The Oracle .Net managed provider will so be able to use it and display the characters correctly.
    - The second one is to use the OLEDB.Net managed provider, and then use OLEDB for Oracle provider. OLEDB will take care of the client NLS_LANG registry parameter.
    Would it be possible to test your application against an Oracle database with WE8ISO8859P8 characterset?
    Would it be possible to test it with the OLEDB .Net managed provider, and after checking the NLS_LANG client registry parameter?

    Hi,

    Carsten,
    Could you please upload you Citadel database to the following FTP site:
    ftp.ni.com/incoming
    If you want to compress (ZIP) and/or put a password on the data, that's fine. Please send me a private email at [email protected] (with the file name and password if you put one on the file) once you have uploaded the file and I will check it out.
