Playlists as Podcast items

Here is my ill-conceived podcast RSS:
http://uncommonground.com/podcast_hifi.rss?whatdate=11/7/2006
As you can see, hopefully, I was confusing the concept of a "playlist" with a "podcast"
Each <item> in that podcast is a single song from our extensive archive of recorded live material.
The order of the <item>s is what I thought would make the playlist, and if you change the 'whatdate' argument you can get tomorrow's or yesterday's "podcast" (playlist).
I realize, of course, after re-reading the Tech Specs for the tenth time, that I missed the fundamental premise that each <item> IS a podcast.
And that iTunes is treating each song as a "podcast" and re-ordering it by pubDate.
This makes perfect sense, once I have re-read (X 10) the Tech Specs...
Now, however, I have the problem that what I really (still) want is a daily podcast of a playlist of 30 songs.
The supported types in the Tech Specs do not include a "playlist" as far as I can see:
[quote]
Supported extensions include "m4a", "mp3", "mov", "mp4", "m4v", and "pdf".
[/quote]
However, the wording below that list just above the table seems to me to mean that the list is a representative common sample, rather than an exhaustive list of all supported types.
But I'm unable, so far, to find an exhaustive list of supported MIME types, nor a declaration of intent by Apple to support playlists, which seems like a rather obvious and reasonable type to support, to this naive user...
So I'm considering several options, with some obvious pros and cons, but would like your feedback on the not-so-obvious implications:
One option would be to smush 30 songs into one giant MP3, and put the URL to that in the <item> for each day.
This would almost-for-sure render the individual artwork associated with each MP3 useless, no? I can strip it out no problem, as it's an ID3 tag generated on-the-fly anyway, but I'd like to keep the artist headshots with the audio.
It also seems like it would make for a rather large and unwieldy podcast.
As opposed to the 30 songs per podcast as playlist model gives the user a great deal more control and flexibility, which I vastly prefer, and I'm pretty sure Apple's basic human interface philosophy agrees with me.
A second option would be to use a playlist .m3u MIME type for the type attribute of an enclosure, and pray that it works, and if it does work, pray that Apple will really support it.
That relies on un-docmented behaviour, which is just obviously wrong.
My third option is to just not bother with the podcast, as I already have the content available as a daily playlist anyway, and the podcast brings little added value.
Obviously, though I was rather hoping to get listed in Apple's iTunes site, once I work out these kinks and have finished my QA.
My fourth option, and the best one, is that somebody here will point me to some Apple/iTunes documentation I've missed that shows that "audio/mpeg-url" is a perfectly valid supported type.
I have searched for this, but so far failed to find it.
I realize that this is a rather open-ended question as I have couched it, but am hoping that elicits good feedback at a higher level, if the playlist is not supported.
If, obviously, I've just plain missed the docos that show clear support for a playlist as an enclosure, then I apologize profusely in advance for wasting your time reading all this when the answer is a simple link.

Fascinating. I think I replied to you a few minutes
ago in a different thread asking what content you
might have for 20,000 items. That's a pretty cool
site/project.
Thanks.
Suggestion #1: Create a daily MP3 with 30 second
samples of each of the 30 songs.
Right now, our resources are being maximized to produce the audio content as-is, live, direct to hard drive, from a second mix that the engineer does while doing the live sound.
What you are suggesting would require at least a couple/three hours per day of post-production.
Not gonna happen.
Be nice if we could, but not gonna happen.
This is all coming out of my pocket on dumpster hardware (literally) and F/OSS software, as I'm a big OpenSource kind of person. (Reference: Search php-general mailing list archives for my name)
You could even have
someone be the DJ talking about each of the artists
songs, and your coffeeshop's schedule. Then in your
podcast file, put that one MP3 file. The item would
link to the daily page (a page that doesn't seem to
exist on your site yet), e.g. a page
http://www.uncommonground.com/show.htm?date=11/1/2006
and that page would have all 30 full mp3s, with
artist info. This would let people sample all the
music you're sharing, plus drive traffic to your web
site.
I've got plenty of traffic to the website.
Every month the owner of the place is like, "Dude, we got 700,000 hits this month!"
Suggestion #2. I assume you have the appropriate
copyright clearances for the music.
Yes.
The artists sign a release form.
And they login and choose, track-by-track, which ones they want us to provide as streaming (and now podcast), download, in hifi or lofi, and which ones we can play over the speakers in the Cafe and...
So, pretty much, by the time the MP3 hits the public 'net, the artist has signed a piece of paper AND approved our usage by previewing and clicking a "Yes, this one" checkbox.
Set up an
Internet Radio station at Live365.com. You can get a
basic broadcast set for as low as $25/month. For
starting at $2,000/year you can get a professional
package (the X5000). If you look through Live365 from
this link
http://www.dpbolvw.net/email-2190521-10375019 , I'll
get a few bucks as a referral. I've been with Live365
for two years now, it's a lot of fun.
Errr. No, I don't really want to drive traffic to live365 or elsewhere.
I already pay a webhost good money [*] and have no problem generating a playlist, serving up MP3s from a hodge-podge of hard drives and 3rd-tier sites, and caching the popular ones in a front-end controller, while also providing dynamic on-the-fly ID3 tags from the online DB populated by the Artist Profile info which is edited by the artists whenever they want to update their headshot, website, email, etc.
Actually, it's two webhosts and a T-1 to the coffeehouse, if you really want to delve into 5-tier architecture of audio generation, archival, caching, delivery, and fail-safe roll-over...

  • How can I make playlists from podcasts in iTunes 11.1.3?

I used to be able to highlight podcasts and create playlists from them with a right-click. In version 11.1.3 of iTunes, that option is no longer available. Does anyone know of another way to create playlists from podcasts now?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mizmidwest

It seems to work for me.  Select the entire podcast, or specific episodes from a podcast or podcasts.  Right-click on the selected items and choose New Playlist from Selection.
iTunes 11.x may hide the sidebar (along the left side of window).  It looks and works differently from earlier versions (before iTunes 11), when the sidebar is hidden.  To show the sidebar, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  With the sidebar visible, it works (mostly) like it did in previous versions.

  • Using playlist for podcast

even though a playlist of podcasts has multiple items, when I choose to listen to that playlist my iPod only recognized 1 item. That is, the playlist of podcasts could have 155 items, but when the first one plays the iPod identifies it as 1 of 1.
I'd like to find out what what I must do for this to be resolved and the entire list plays when selected.

I found the solution-- delete the preference files for iTunes and iPhoto and start over.

  • ITunes no longer shows 'Podcasts' item under iPhone device section.

    Stats:
    iPhone 4 (32GB)
    iOS version 4.3.3
    iTunes for Windows 7 (64-bit) Version 10.3.1.55
I have iTunes set to manually manage my music and podcasts. Previously I had done this by clicking on the "Podcasts" item under the iPhone device section. Here I would delete podcasts I had previously listened to and drag new podcasts from the "podcasts" item under the Library section. As of today, when I connect my iPhone to my computer, it no longer lists a "podcasts" item under my iPhone in the Devices section.
Now I can't fine a place to delete old podcasts. I also do NOT want to use iTunes sync function for podcasts. Anyone else having this issue?
    -Mike

Just found out. You select the podcast page on your iPhone 4. You drag your finger, from right to left, over the screen, just like you do to delete e-mails. The delete option will present itself. Touch the delete button and confirm. The podcast will be deleted.

  • ITunes loses my entire library with artwork, playlists and podcasts every time I close the program. Any advice very welcome

iTunes loses my entire library with artwork, playlists and podcasts every time I close the program. Upon restarting it takes at least 15 minutes to rebuild the library and podcasts and a lot longer to replace the artwork, I also lose playlists. I would really welcome some feedback and assistance here and am losing faith in the Apple product. Since iTunes has been updated to version 11 it seems to have caused a lot of issues for many people. I am hopeful of a reply and a resolution. I have approx. 1200 albums at just under 90 Gb. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ditch AVG (at this stage it really does seem to be the problem for some people) and install Microsoft Security Essentials...

  • , I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive. Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing, Can't play music .. how to restore back to original state .

I-tunes can no longer 'locate' my library , after a botched cut & paste attempt to back-up onto an external drive.Cant play any music as it "can't find" the library  Still syncing with i-Pod but playlists lost , podcasts no longer syncing.   How to restore back to original state . I have tried re-installing  - with no change

I do the same thing as you do...
My music is on an external drive as to not use up gigabytes of storage that need not be used for media.
There are a couple basic principles to iTunes that I believe you should know.
    1. iTunes is not a media storage program. It does not store your media "in iTunes". It simply is an organization tool for your media already on a hard disk.
    2. As iTunes is not a storage mechanism, it has no way to "know" whether or not the media that is listed is actually there. This is where the "design" of iTunes comes into play.
I like to think of iTunes as a bread-crumb trail. The "music" in iTunes, isn't actually there. The bread crumb is the location on the external hard drive.
If that bread crumb trail disappears (in this case the external drive you use). If said external drive is not plugged in, that bread crumb trail is not able to be followed. iTunes is "lost" and unable to find the media. The only way to remedy this is to place the media on your local drive.
To address your issue of the library. If you hold down shift, you can select your library on your external drive. It will be a file with an .itl extension. The folder name will be your external drive.
I go into edit > preferences > advanced and set my library to the correct location. Make sure you check the box "Copy to iTunes Folder when importing" (or whatever it says).
You can't fix the issue of iTunes not seeing the media if your drive is unplugged unless you physically move the content to your OS HDD...Or any other HDD you use.

  • Podcast items not showing on Podcast Page in iTunes App

The Podcast items of the following Podcast are not showing when I choose to see the Podcast page within iTunes App: https://itunes.apple.com/ch/podcast/uzh-news-video-und-audio/id626789977?l=en
It's possible to subscribe to the podcast, and all items are being shown in the library as well, but not in iTunes Store View within iTunes App.
    Please help : )
Devices: Desktop (iTunes 11.02), iPad 2 & iPhone 4S (both with latest iOS) - same problem everywhere

    Hi Roger
Many thanks for your very fast answer! : )
In the meantime, we scanned the XMLfrom the RSS-Source (http://www.uzh.ch/news/topics/multimedia.rss) but we could not confirm any missing </image> closing tag.. : /
You're speaking of 21 instances of 'image' tags while there are only 20 items available in this feed - maybe the 21st might be the <itunes:image... />-tag (for the podcast art) which is not in need of a closing tag?
We know that iTunes doesn't like our image tag on item level. However, we do need this tags for other usage of this video-article-feed (f.ex. normal RSS feed subscribing) which is why we cannot remove it. But: do you know of any «trick» of specifically blocking that element for iTunes store since its troubling the latter so much?
Many thanks again, and our kindest regards to you and beautiful Londontown : )

  • HT5295 Can I create a playlist in podcasts?

Can I create a playlist in podcasts?  How?

I too was a playlist user when it came to listening to my podcasts. The solution of just deleting the Podcast app is what worked for me also. Maybe there will be a solution within the Podcast app in the future.

  • Moving playlists and podcast to new machine

How can I move all of my iTunes playlists and podcasts to my new machine? is there any way of keeping all of the settings the same? thank you.

Found that Apple's _Mac OS X Advanced System Administration v10.5_ book says that cloning works to migrate between machines. Boot from install DVD after cloning and run disc's upgrade. PPC to Intel requires special consideration - recommended to archive old, demote to stand alone, promote, and finally restore from archive.
If anyone has any experience with this, please report how it worked for you.

  • Can I still make a playlist of podcasts with the new podcast app?

Can I still make a playlist of podcasts with the new podcast app?

No, for some reason it's not included as one of the features of the Podcast App.
If you need playlists (as many of us do), then delete the Podcast App and podcasts will return to the music app, complete with podcast playlist functionality.

  • Playlists of Podcasts will not sync with iPhone

    Hi,
For the first time since updating to iOS 7 I have tried to sync a Playlist of Podcasts and noticed that the playlist no longer appears in Music on my iPhone.  Looking in Podcasts, there isn't a Playlist option.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Gordon

    Allen thanks for you assistance,
<If you have a MobileMe account that you are accessing on your Mac as well as with your iPhone, and you have Contacts and Calendar On for automatic syncing via Push with the MobileMe "cloud", you aren't syncing your iPhone direct with your Mac for this data via the iTunes sync process. It is one or the other for syncing this data, not both.>
Got it - this what I am doing at the present time.
<What are your settings for syncing with MobileMe on your Mac?>
    <Automatic or manual?> Automatic
<With a MobileMe account, the Address Book and iCal on your Mac are kept synchronized with the MobileMe "cloud" and the same with the iPhone for this data depending on your MobileMe account settings on your Mac and on your iPhone.>
This is the issue - when I change something on my mac - it shows up on Mobile Me via the cloud - my iPod Touch even makes the changes as I would expect with my iPhone. I think I have sent up my iPhone appropriately but I could be wrong. I followed Apple's instructions at:
    http://www.apple.com/mobileme/setup/iphone/mac.html
Like I said - it is driving me nuts - cause changes on my iPhone will show up on my mac and iPod touch - but when I make changes to something on my mac it will show up on iPod touch but not on my iPhone.
    Thanks everyone,
    Brad

  • Playlist of Podcasts does not automatically move to next Podcast

Creating a Playlist of Podcasts does not appear to work the same as a Playlist of music. For Music, on the iPod i go to Playlists menu, and from there, with a particular playlist selected, i press Play on iPod, and the Playlist starts, and it says 1 of 100 (or whatever). With a Playlist of Podcasts, does not appear to me to behave in same way. From the Playlist menu, if i press Play on the iPod with the Playlist name selected, it does not start. I must press center button on the iPod to go down to the actual list of Podcasts in the Playlist. Then, i can select one to play. When it plays, its says 1 of 1. And, it does not move to the next Podcast when the first Podcast finishes.
Can somebody help me out? Is there a way to create an actual Playlist of Podcasts that plays one after another, just like a Playlist of music cuts? Am i missing something? Its real tough in the car to select a new Podcast when one finishes, so i had hoped this problem was solved by making a Playlist of Podcasts, but so far it appears to me to not be solved. Thank you. • 3.1.3 Software Update and Smart Playlists with Podcasts

I did the 3.1.3 update last night and now my smart playlist containing podcasts is gone.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?
    Any idea on a fix?
    Thanks

For whatever it's worth, 3.1.3 appears to have fixed my problems with Smart Playlists...
In 3.1 and 3.1.2 I'd get the same contents of a Smart Playlist between iTunes and the iPhone, but a very different order.
e.g. I have my Podcasts smart playlist set to order by ascending publish date. A bit annoying because I wouldn't get them played back in chronological order on the iPhone, but only an annoyance.
Now since applying 3.1.3 - with no mods to filters or Live Updating I might add - they've back to showing the right order on the iPhone as well as on iTunes. Which is a relief. Long may it continue!
PS: I did also update iTunes to 9.0.3... I don't suppose this would help those on the list having troubles would it?
