  • Catalogue of SQL and PL/SQL bad practices: Call for participation

I started compiling a list of Oracle SQL and PL/SQL bad practices, with the intention of producing a comprehensive catalogue of common and recurring programming mistakes, that can be used as a check-list for code reviews or given to junior developers. I have identified about 30 bad practices so far. For each bad practice, I provided a list of symptoms in the code, an explanation why it causes problems and a list of preferred solutions.
My goal with this list is primarily to start a discussion about similar recurring issues that other people have noticed. That discussion should lead to a more complete list which the community will then be able to use, hopefully, to learn something from the mistakes of others and to produce better code.
I would really appreciate your feedback - if you are interested in discussing these practices we can either do it in this forum, or start a separate mailing list.
You can download the first version of the catalogue in PDF form from http://gojko.net/effective-oracle

exception handler (already covered), the philosophy
behind not using stored procedures, and having beenHi riedelme,
I'm not advocating not using stored procedures, but I am advocating not using exclusively stored procedures. I've seen that approach often, typically with people coming from SQL server or Oracle forms backgrounds, I never could understand the reasons behind it. Even for a simple select or update, they would write a stored proc that wraps the call and then require the client to execute a stored proc.
I think that views are much better for getting the data out of the database in general, and forcing people to use stored procedures with ref output cursors makes little sense. If the only possible interface is a stored proc, then one proc must be created for every required combination of data and every required filtering or grouping method, so there is much much more code in the database, and more code means harder maintenance.
If client apps can get data out using views, then they can join them with other views, filter or group the data as they require, which means that there is a lot less code in the database to maintain.
My other problem with stored-proc only approach is when people wrap simple insert/update/delete commands into a stored proc. Again, I'm not advocating using complex instead-of triggers to implement workflows and forcing people to use views, but I simply don't see any benefit of implementing a stored proc to do a simple update. I see a bad side of it because a stored proc needs to be implemented for every combination of columns that a client may need to update and every criteria that can be used for that. If a client is allowed to update a view, there is much less code in the database.
Views are, in my experience, also a lot easier to maintain and optimise without downtime because they can be revalidated without causing any problems to currently connected clients, where revalidated stored procedure or package will throw an exception the first time a connected client that had called it before calls it again.
If I'm missing something, please tell me. I'd really love to understand why someone would build a client API exclusively from stored procedures.
So far, I've been given explanations that it is for security purposes, or for performance. I don't know of any security restriction that can be implemented on a stored procedure or package that cannot be implemented with a view, and if bound variables and statement caching is used, sql statements don't suffer from sql injection and support pre-compilation.
Again, i'm not advocating throwing stored procs completely out, i'm against using them exclusively and throwing out any chance of SQL access.

  • HT201406 my ipad touch screen is not working please give solution for it.

my ipad touch screen is not working please give solution for it.
i have connected ipad to itunes and done it restore seetings then also my touch is not working but
when i connected ipad to i tunes inside functions are working properly but touch screen is not working what can i do

If you have a screen protector on the iPad's screen, try removing it. If you don't or that doesn't help, and restoring the iPad to factory settings has not corrected the problem, then the iPad probably has a hardware problem and will need to be taken or sent to Apple for replacement.
    Regards.

  • How to learn  SQL and PL/SQL ?

who can give me some useful advice about learning SQL and PL/SQL ?
    who can help me?
    thanks

    Hi,
It's my opinion that you can pickup the PL/SQL language syntax /semantics from a book - but, to learn, you need to get real hands-on experience. You can get invloved in a Project that requires the use of PL/SQL & I am sure you can pick up the nuts & bolts from your experience.
You can read articles written by the SQL & PL/SQL gurus like Tom Kyte, Steven Fuernstein & the numerous Oracle ACE's - you do learn atleast a thing or two from every article.
If you have any specific questions about SQL & PL/SQL - you have come to the right place - you can post the questions here & the gurus will defenitely help you !
    All the best !
    Regards,
    Sandeep

  • EF-s 50mm f/1.8 STM good for a "point and shoot" wife?

As my title implies, my wife is a "point and shoot" photographer.  She mainly uses her point and shoot at the school where she teaches taking portrait shots and the occasional action photo of her students (pre-school ages, indoors and out).  Would the EF-s 50mm f/1.8 STM be a good "all around" lens for these types of shots?  I have a Rebel T6i that I bought because wanted some of the more advanced features (changeable lens and manual control) of a DSLR over a point and shoot and ease of use for my wife.  I also wanted the WiFi features as my wife has no idea what an SD card is (she is very technically challenged) and I wanted an easy way for her to transfer her shots to her iPad (which the T6i has accomplished beautifully). ThanksJohn

"Not so good for candid or group shots because of the depth of field with the fixed focal length but can be artistic." This is a bit ...ah... wrong!  On top of the list when comparing a prime 50mm lens to a zoom is, a prime is more limited to what it does well.  This means you must weigh the bennys to the downsides.A 50mm on a T6 can be great for candids becuase you don't have to be as close to the kid(s).  It can be a problem because you can't be as close to the kid(s).  Do you kinda see this trend. The 'depth-fo-field', DOF, has nothing to do with it in this case. No Point & Shoot, P&S, that are worth having are limited to a fixed or prime lens.  IE, the Canon G series of P&S.  I have a G15 and it ia a great camera.  However, this level of P&S does not come cheaply. Sorry but the lens I would reccomend for her and you is not going to come cheaply either.  But you already dropped the coin on a mighty fine camera so here is my thought, EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM.  It gives you almost the best of both worlds.  It is fast.  It has a good focal range.  It has outstanding IQ.  It will make the T6 as close to the best P&S there is. So my long winded answer to your question, "EF-s 50mm f/1.8 STM good for a "point and shoot" wife?"No, it wouldn't.

  • Need objective sql and pl/sql question for preparing interview

Hey buddy please help me, now I am preparing interview of sql and pl/sql where asking objective question, so I need online site for preparing interview, your suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried searching using one of the many Internet search engines?
I expect that there are many kinds of sites out there that may cater to you.
The only other recommendation I would have would be to review the documentation at http://tahiti.oracle.com. Probably the SQL Language Reference, PL/SQL Reference, Application Developer's Guide, and Concept's Guide.

  • Preparing for SQL and PL/SQL exam

    Hello people...
I'm taking a preparation course for the Oracle DBA certification exam. I just finished preparing for the first exam -- SQL and PL/SQL.. The book I used for the course Oracle 8i DBA Certification Exam Guide as well as TEach yourself SQL in 21 days and Teach yourself PL/SQL in 21 days...
I'd say I'm prepared to pass the exam... Before I make my first attempt, I am thinking of going through the Exam Cram for the first exam. However, judging from the reviews on amazon.com, the book doesn't seem to be helpful...
Anyone have any tips or recommendations before I take the exam? Should I go through the Exam Cram? If not, are there better books to go through for last minute preparations?
Also, how many questions on the exam and what percentage do I need to pass?
Any input would be much appreciated... Thanks for ur help!

Try going for the Exam Cram. The exam at the end of the book will definitely help a lot. The rest of the book might help, so just give it a try.

  • This new update for the iphone has me troubled. Nowhere did I see where it was only good for 3GS,4S and or 5. Is this update also good for the 3GS? I'm reading people are haing trouble.

This new update for the iPhone has me troubled. Nowhere did I see where it was only good for 3GS,4S and or 5 or all. Is this update also good for the 3GS? I'm reading people are having trouble.

iOS 6 can be loaded without problem on the 3GS.  Not all features are supported however.
With respect to your reading people are having trouble, what did you expect to see on this technical support forum?  People don't write in to state they have a trouble-free upgrade.

  • I downloaded mountain lion on my laptop.  Do I need to do the same on my Desktop and iPad or is the one download good for all 3, and how do I do that if it is?

I downloaded mountain lion on my laptop.  Do I need to do the same on my Desktop and iPad or is the one download good for all 3, and how do I do that if it is?

If your desktop computer is one that supports Mountain Lion, you can either download it there or make a bootable jump drive with the installer on it -- assuming you haven't yet used the installer you downloaded to your laptop.
As for the iPad, it doesn't use the same OS as the Macs do; it uses iOS versions, so Mountain Lion won't work there.

  • Can I begin service with $100.00 card good for one year and what are the usage terms?

Can I begin prepaid service with a $100.00 card good for one year and if so what are the usage terms?

Yes; phone is for Verizon PREPAID plans. Sri I did not state that correctly. I see that there are prepaid plans with monthly usage etc. I see some offers on line for a $100.00 card that's good for one year.  Trying to determine if that is available from a Verizon store to begin a new plan. Checked with two different Verizon stores and got two opposite answers and neither was sure of the terms. Simply trying to get a low cost backup. Thank you for responding.
