Please help me to get my macbook to start up properly!

My macbook kept coming up with the message 'Disk almost full. Please delete some files' and was becoming really slow obviously due to low memory, so I started to delete some of my larger files. However, finder froze as I was deleting them so I had to use force quit and restart the application, but it failed to reload and kept flickering on and off on the task manager screen. I could then only see my desktop picture with no desktop items or anything so I had to force shutdown my mac. Now when I try to load it up it gets stuck on the blue/grey screen with the apple icon and the spinning wheel and wont get any further than this no matter how long I leave it for. I've tried safe mode start up etc. and it still gets no further than this screen. I've also lost the box my mac came in so I dont think I have a start up CD that I think im supposed to have and probably need? I also have one of the latest versions of mac os x but im not sure on the exact version.
Thanks for any help you can give me!

It is probably not a good idea to put email addresses in a public forum like this, you are likely to "opt-in" to a lot more than you bargained for.
I can only tell you what I see, but it may not apply to you.
In the email for the security alerts, there is a hyperlink: http://myprofile.oracle.com/
You log in, then expand the Subscription Center, then under that expand Oracle Technology News. You should see a checkbox for Oracle Security Alerts.
I assume these must all go to the email which is the login for all this. There have been reports here of people not getting stuff to their email, in some cases apparently because of the various upgrades and migrations that have happened. If you look at that profile, the checkbox is checked and the email is correct, be sure you are not getting messed up by anti-spam somewhere between Oracle and you.
Let us know what happens.
I'm fairly certain I haven't gotten alerts that others have, yet I get some. I don't particularly care so I haven't followed up on that, there might be some platform-specificity or other rational explanation, like not letting my databases spew information to the intertubes.
