Please help: powerbook dead?

hi everyone, hope you can help me with this. i tried starting my powerbook but all i'm getting is three beeps followed by a flashing light. what's wrong?!

3 beeps followed by a flashing LED means there isn't any good memory in the memory sockets. You can try pulling the memory out and reseating it, or better yet put other memory in. If you only have one memory strip and it's in the lower memory socket, move it to the upper socket. There's a known Powerbook issue with the lower socket going bad in some Powerbooks. If one of those actions doesn't fix it, then you have a bigger problem with the logic board.
While this may be more than you want to know, here's what the beep codes mean:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable

this is my first post here.so im extremely sorry if this is the wrong section.
i purchased the nokia n82 in india around January 2008.last week when i decided to connect the phone to my pc and update it using nokia software updater to the latest version...it was running all fine suddenly "NSU" said that the connection to the phone was lost and remove and insert battery again... i did it as many times possible den some sites indicated the three finger salute.. i tried that also but no use..all i have is a black screen with a backlight on which vibrates when switched on.
then i took it to the nokia care in Bangalore(RT nagar) the place is called shilak.The phone is under warranty so i thot nokia care would help.. first time i went there the incharge there took my phone looked at and said to me you hav dropped your phone and u hav damaged ur screen.. there are a few scratches on the phone due to a bit ruf use.. then he took the phone sayin warranty was void and i had to pay for the services.. there was no feedback from them.then i went back to the place 2 days later... the lady in the counter said "its board problem we hav no solution for it".. then i went to the dealer i bought the phone from..he said hell giv a try with the nokia care...i went two days later... now the reason given by nokia care for waranty being void is water logging...i was like omg!! i hav never even brought the phone near water..
people please help me.. as i really doubt whether nokia care in bangalore or india will help me repair my phone.. for a mere 400rs or 10$ they are ruining nokias name..

Sorry to read about your disgraceful treatment and the hands of nokia vinaydas.I'm afraid that these FAKE voiding of warranties are becoming more and more common.Nokia stop caring after they have your money.My advice to you would be to seek legal advice or some offical goverment body such as trading standards.Maybe even search here and other forums find others in the same position as yourself and get them to support you in a joint claim against nokia.This has to stop its nokia cannot be allowed to get away with this.I have a thread on here named QUALITY CONTROL AND AFTER CARE please add your voice to it.

Sorry if this is long. Hello everyone. I am having quite the time with my Powerbook. Here is a little background information. I purchased it in August of 2004 and I have Apple Care, so everything is under warranty. For the most part my laptop has been very fast, hardly freezes, and is always very responsive. A few weeks ago I was at a friends house with my PB plugged into a wall and I am quite sure the machine overheated and froze. I wasn't able to get it to stop freezing, even after restarting at least 5 times. I turned it off and left it alone until I arrived home the next day. When I turned it on it was fine and was fine for another week. I was at this friends house again and the same thing happened. I shut it off and brought it home and it was fine again.
A few days later it freezes at home and I had to restart it. When the machine turned on it said "Please restart your computer." And I did, again and again and again, kept saying the same thing. I called the Apple support line and they had me do a PMU reset and a PRAM reset - nothing worked. We ran a disk utility from my boot disks and it found a red error in my HD that it couldn't repair. I ended up having to do an erase and install. I thought that would fix my problems, but I was wrong. The next day my machine was constantly freezing with every program I opened. The color spinning wheel shows up every time I attempt to click on anything. As you can imagine, this is qutie annoying. I ran ANOTHER disk utility and it found no errors. I've also ran a hardware test (the short version and looped the extended version) and that found no errors.
I have a friend who works for apple support and he and I tried EVERYTHING over the phone. I even replaced my 1 gig stick of ram with my original 256 stick of Apple ram, and it's still just as slow and freezing. I am really running out of possible reasons for this. If anyone has ANY possible ideas, I would appreciate it. I want to get as many answers and opinions as I can before I drop my PB off at the retail store and say goodbye to it for 3 weeks. To me it sounds more like the hard drive is in need of replacement and, since you have AppleCare, the best thing to do is to get the drive replaced by Apple.
The downside to a drive replacement is that you will lose all your data unless it has been backed up.

Please help powerbook wont boot

last nihgt i was trying to put the old usb kernel extesnions of 10.4.9 so that my usb drive would mount but what i did was maually take out one of the kernel extensions and when i treid to put it back it said that it could not be modified and now my powerbook just stays in the whiteor grey apple screen and wont boot can anybody help me on what i should do

Please help: Powerbook G4 12'' painfully slow on boot and desktop

The first thing I did was search the forums extensively and have came up empty..
The computer takes about 10-15 mins to boot and loading any application takes about 30-90 sec to open and each action in the application is as slow.
From reading the forums......
I ran boot disk for diskwarrior. Everything was fine.
Ran in single user and ran that script to check the disk. Everything was fine.
Ran disk utility and did the usual. Everything is fine.
I check to make sure all the ram (768) was recoginzed....it is...
I have no idea what to do now. It appears that the hardware is ok. Any advice?
Also I checked activity monitor for any processes that were taking up cpu
nothing...

This problem could be caused by not letting the daily, weekly, and monthly scripts run. To run these you can download mac janitor, or run them manually. T run manually open a terminal window and type sudo sh /etc/daily you will be asked for your password. The replace daily with weekly, and then monthly.
p.s. If you haven't run this in a while it can take a long time

i have a old powerbook g4 which i usally use to store some photos and to listen music. the battery of my powerbook is completly dead so i used to use my powerbook using charger adapter so whenever my power cuts down my laptop will be shutdown.

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM is not working

This is most likely faulty battery. Make Genius reservation or set up service and take or send to Apple for resolution under Warranty.

G4 Powerbook Hard Drive Problem - PLEASE HELP!!

I have a powerbook G4 15 inch alu. It is running OSX version 10.4.11
My system profiler tells me I have a 74.5GB hard drive with 69.34GB used, but I had wiped the HD in September 2008 and reinstalled the OS and few other programmes and files, so this shouldn't be the case at all.
I have found that my the problem is with my Users folder - within Users, my user account (the main account, I have another account setup so my mum can use her iPhone) has 67GB used. But when I go into my user account (clicking through the icons, after double-clicking the MacintoshHD desktop icon), none of the folders within my account run to anwhere near 67GB. Totalled, they come to around 10-15GB at most. There's a good 50GB or so of hard drive that just seems to be missing.
I ran Drive Genius to repair permissions and that eliminated a couple of GB of this 'missing space' but no more than that. How can I go about finding and reaccessing my lost hard drive space?
FWIW - I reinstalled the OS in September because this was my University laptop and the result of 4-5 years use had resulted in loads of unwanted files. I saved the important stuff to discs and then reinstalled because it was much easier (I thought) than trying to find and get rid of all the unwanted stuff.
Please please help. At the moment, the computer is running fine if a little sluggishly (understandable given how much of the hard drive is 'used'), but I had a nasty experience earlier this year with my G5's hard drive crapping ut and really don't want to end up in the same boat with this one. I also need that extra space back so I can use some programmes I can't install or work with as things stand.

cornelius - apologies for the ambiguity there. Hope this clears things up a bit:
Users folder = get info says 69.34GB used
Double-click on the Users folder and I get three folders - the shared folder, my mum's account folder, and my account folder. My account is the main/master account.
The shared folder is empty. My mum's account folder has a couple GB used, mine has 66.5GB used.
I double-click on my account folder, and get icons/folders for Desktop, Library, Movies, etc (the usual stuff). When I do Get Info for each of these, the sum of GB used by them is about 10-15GB, nowhere near the 66GB supposedly used.
If it helps any, the File System is Journalled HFS+
S.M.A.R.T. status is verified, and Drive Genius, Disk Warrior, and Disk Utility aren't picking up anything bad other than the corrupted permissions I repaired prior to making this post. Repairing permissions only freed up a few GB more space, still got 50 missing GB to locate and free up. Or start saving for a replacement HD, but if this is a sign of a crash, I'd rather know now so I can plan for that.

It doesn't make sense, there's nothing else which could have used those 'missing' GB. And, as I only reinstalled everything in September I know there's no way the few programmes I've added and 10 or so CDs I've copied onto the G4 could account for the missing 50GB. My HD should have most of its space free - minus the space used by OSX, any OSX updates, and literally a handful of small apps and files.

PowerBook G4 17 won;t start after upgrading Hard disk Please help!

Hi Folks! need your help in order to diagnose aPowerBook G4 1Ghz Serial V731556CMVZ. It worked perfectly untill start to have problems with hard drive. I bought a new Seagate Momentus 7200RPM and followed the instructions ifixit.com without any problem.
After finishing, the PowerBook won't start. I can not hear any noise form HD, or SuperDrive, no startup chim sound.
I disasembly and assembly again the PB and nothing. I try to reset PRAM SHIFT CTRL ALT POWER and nothing.
It's frustrating. Please Help!

I would make sure the keyboard ribbon is squarely seeded and in the right position. That clip is extremely tiny and fragile. Any damage to it whatsoever could cause major issues. Did it fracture at all during the installation process?

Can I use my iphone 4 with Powerbook G4? It wont let me. Please help!!!

I've just opened my new iphone and tried to connect it to my powerbook g4 but it say that 'the iphone can not be used as it requires Mac OSX 10.5.8 or later'. My powerbook currently has 10.4.11. I've checked for updates but my Mac say I'm up to date.
Is there any way around this? I will be so disappointed if not as all my music ect is on my powerbook.

Need Major Help! Powerbook G4. PLEASE HELP

I have a Powerbook G4 running OS X 10.5.8 and for some reason I can't get it to lanch apps or anything. The finder got corrupted and I've tried everything to get to disk utility but I can't. I tried safe mode. So I figured I might just make a partition on an external drive for my mac and lanch it off this copy of my HD I made a while back. It's in .hfs format. It used to be a .dmg but I was wondering since I (Sorta) don't have a restore disk if I could mount it to a mac partiontion launch my mac from that and fix the finder file. How can I do this? I also have a .iso I got online of the restore disk but I'm not sure it's the right one since they have .exe's on the disk. Not really complying with the info I used to remember about my disk. Please help.

I think you want a bootable clone. PPC Machines (G4,G5) need FIREWIRE drives) Intel Machines can use USB and Firewire drives.

My sister gave me her old powerbook g4. She erased the hard drive and relaoded the software. I cant get itunes to open or run. Your computer may need a series of updates to bring it up to speed with the last versions of software supported by 10.4 Note that these will themselves be several years old since Apple hasn't supported Tiger for several years. In particular you cannot upgrade to the newest iTunes or use any brand new i-devices on a computer running 10.4
One way to do updates is to run Software Update. Do the updates one by one since trying to do many at one time often results in problems. Use Disk Utility to repair permissions before and after.
For general Tiger update questions I suggest you post on the Tiger 10.4 forum. As for iTunes, the newest version you can run is 9.2.1 available at
