Please no more Certified Like New phone.

I've been a customer of Verizon for about 4 years.
Recently I purchased iPhone 5S at a near by Verizon store and it was having connectivity issues where cell phone reception goes in and out.
Made a trip to the store and the clerk took a look and said that it is antenna issue. He just told me that he'll order "new phone" for me. Next day the package arrived and I found out it was a refurbished phone. I was not happy about that but I just wanted to get a phone that's working and I had faith in Verizon I believed if it tells me "certified like new" it's going to be ok.
Nope.
This replacement phone #1 had a battery charging issue. Display says it's charging but the % number just keeps going down. I took a trip #3 to the store. The clerk said he is going send yet another "certified like new" phone.
This replacement phone #2 has connectivity issue again. Another trip #4 to the store. The guy says antenna issue, he is going to order ANOTHER replacement phone. I told the clerk I'm getting skeptical about the Certified Like New phones and I want a brand new phone (which I paid for in a first place). He said there is nothing else he can do except sending me refurbished phone over and over again. He told me to go to Apple Store Genius Bar.
The replacement phone #3 arrived and this phone has Sleep Button malfunction. It's not assembled right and the button sinks when held in. I have to push really hard to make it work. Before I made the trip #5 to the store, I went to the Apple Store as the Verizon store clerk told me to do.
At the Apple guy told me the phone I have in my hand was purchased Oct 2014 and is out of warranty. There is nothing they can do unless I pay for the fix.
I emailed the Verizon store guy saying that this is getting ridiculous and I want a brand new phone. He told me to call the Customer Service center.
I called the customer service center. It gets even worse. Before discussing about either I get brand new phone or not, she told me that I can't get ANY replacement phone at current state because they haven't got any of the phones that I've returned. She told me to call back with the tracking number of those parcels.
I called again later that day and this lady #2 now didn't talk about the tracking number at all but told me that somebody from Verizon has to verify about the button malfunction so I have to go to a store. She also told me that once a clerk verifies that, I can get a brand new phone. She says "I'll put that not in the system".
Now next day, this is trip #5 to the store. The clerk verified the problem but he says he doesn't see any of the note about me getting brand new phone as the lady #2 told me there would be.  I asked him to call the customer service center together. The lady #3 on the phone told me same thing as lady #1, she opened the "investigation case" about my missing returned phones. The instruction of returning defected phone says I have to return it within 5 days which I did in each phone. But it's not clear that when that "5 day" period starts nor if it's 5 business days or not. And she goes saying, I will be charged $500 if it doesn't turn up. Now I have a tracking numbers and receipt from USPS stating that I did mail those phones within 5 days. But she says as long as it's not arrived, I will be charged the amount.
A long story short, I paid $195 to get stuck with an old phone with mechanical malfunction with no manufacturer warranty ,and possibly $500 charge. This is way far from fair.

  • Apple might exchange my iPhone 4 with a "like new" phone.

What the heck is a “like new” phone?
My iPhone 4 is defective, and it’s just 32 days old.
I was told that, if a replacement is indicated, that it’ll be replaced with a “like new” phone.
What exactly is a “like new” phone? How exactly does it differ from a brand-new iPhone that I purchased 32 days ago?

    Hi all,
I've had three phones now all of which are stated as brand new but there is speculation that
refurb units have a different serial number starting with 5k or 9k - a friend of mine has >this on his replacement after he smashed his screen.
I'm interested that the refurb units have serial # starting 5K or 9K.
Mine is exchanged iPhone 3GS, and its serial # (you can see it in Settings>General>Information>Serial Number) is starting with 5K!!!
    Now, I have three questions...:
    * do you know how the BRAND NEW iPhone 4's serial # starts?
(I heard Brand New 3GS's serial starts with 88 but I'm not sure...)
    * when you exchange your fault iPhone in the Apple Store, can you ask "Hey, I want a brand new one not the rehurb one. Can I check the serial #?"
    * the serial number appears in the software screen (Setting menu), and it appears in the black box that contains brand new iPhone that you buy. But how about the brown box that contains the iPhone you get the exchanged one? Can you see / check the serial # too?
I want someone to let me know so kindly.
    Thank you!

  • So what exactly does it take to qualify a phone as "Certified Like-New"?

...verify the phone turns on and then ship it out?
I've had a Droid since launch...its been in a case and screen protector since day one and I take pride in keeping it (and all my other electronics) in mint condition. When I installed 2.2 last month, something went wrong and it corrupted my phone. It freezes 2-3 times daily, requiring a battery pull. I've done factory resets, OS reinstalls...nothing fixed it, and Verizon told me I'd need to get it replaced.
I already had a poor experience with refurbished verizon replacements with my last phone, taking 3 tries to finally get one that wasn't physically beat up....and that one died literally 2 days before the warranty expired (thank god). I figured maybe the Droid being an expensive smartphone would have some better quality control, but unfortunately I know now thats not the case. First replacement came with a slider that would fall open when turned sideways. Second phone's proximity sensor didn't work. Third phone that I just received is similar to the first, with a loose headphone jack and peeling keys.
I've had many conversations with reps regarding my options (or lack there of) and their replacement policies. At one point a rep stated Verizon has one of the best replacement policies because they don't ever charge you for a warranty replacement, whereas many other carries do. I agreed that was nice, but also commented that it seemed pretty clear the money they're spending to ship/replace for free was just made up in reduced labor costs. Rather than have an employee evaluate and QA the phones, they make it the responsibility of the customer to have to complain about this issues that would have otherwise been found. There's no upfront customer cost, but instead a lot of time and frustration. He had no comment on that.
What I want to know is how a phone gets recertified and earns a like new status. Reading these forums, its clear I'm not the first to have this problem. People might say I shouldn't be so critical of the replacements, but its frustrating to keep your phone in great condition, only to have a Verizon update ruin all of that in an instant, followed by repeated replacements that are sub par. I'm not looking for a free upgrade, I just want a phone that is equal to the one I had...and it seems like Verizon's strategy is to just keep sending me phones until one is good enough, or I get sick of trying. My fear, however, is that even if the replacement looks good up front, whats to say it won't die months later when I am out of warranty. Then I'm stuck tacking on another two years onto my contract to get a discounted phone, buying one at full price, or buying one second hand.  Either way, more money out of my pocket that I shouldn't have to spend.

They basically make it look new (take out scratches, etc)
It also has to turn on and radio functions are tested to turn on (not connect).
This includes cell radio, wifi and GPS.
That is the basis of what gets release. They do not check the sliders past the point of opening and closing. They do not have a basis for release in regards to the "stiffness" of the slider.
In essence, the phone will look good, but may not be just like new.

  • Thunderbolt to Charge Certified Like NEW? NO I don't think so...

I dont know what appears to be the problem with the thunderbolt and like new devices. I hate to complain but there is an issue all around with them. I've had 4 CLN thunderbolts and all have had various problems most that have been posted in the forums. My biggest issue is that i asked for a NEW replacement after having so many i get told NO. I'm not a genius but when they certify them and send them out and they still have issues doesn't that seem to be a problem on their end since they hit the Verizon bench to be recertified not RTV to HTC. Which neither seems to take responsibility for any of the issues related to the phones. Honestly my TB was working fine before i was one of the few that got the GB update and pretty much created all kinds of problems beyond that of the "KNOWN" VM issue. I was about to cancel in a dumb move i opted for the Droid Charge, Nifty little phone but 2 major problems that verizon fails to acknowlege. Slow internet especially with flash and the fact that you can not use the web while on a call and no i am not talking sitting at home with wifi. TB is the only 4g device presently that you can surf the web and talk at the same time not attached to WIFI, just one of those minor things that one verizon hides behind that we dont advertise that and almost like its a function they do not support, "IT JUST HAPPENS". My issue now is if you are going to do like for like make sure the "LIKE" matches what the other does besides the camera resolution. I simply asked for a straight out of the box thunderbolt and get the run around. I bought a new phone and never got to enjoy my NEW phone, but was able to finally enjoy it til GB fiasco came out. Any advice would be appreciated and NO MORE EXCUSES...

I really do not see why users are having so many issues with their devices, I have been doing nothing but enjoying my device except the recent data drop issues but this seems to be because of the 4g conversion here in KC..   I haven't had any replacement devices for my Thunderbolt but I have for other devices and I never had any issues with any of the replacements..
I feel bad to hear the luck that some of you have been having... This is why I try to help as much as I can..
Now as for the new device being given the contract lay out this pretty clear and it stated that a certified replacement will be given after 14 days return time and unless someone shows mercy on you I don't see this changing because they seem to sticking to the contracts rules which is legally in their right...
Good Luck on finding a solution, I wouldn't change my device for anything released through Verizon at this time...  Now the HTC Vigor (Or what ever they release it at has caught my interest)

  • Buyer Beware Certified Like New

These are FACTS and IS NOT in any way intended to misrepresent Verizon. I received 3 faulty replacement devices from Verizon. The device was an IPhone 5 and was replaced for a battery issue. The first device had a earpiece not installed proper low volume couldn't hear unless on speaker. Device 2 had a proximity sensor not installed properly would face dial and hang up. Device 3 the screen was not properly installed I was told by Verizon it had warranty on it from Apple so I went to the Apple Store to my surprise and the apple st that was going to fix it would not touch it because it has a aftermarket screen on it and told me that verizon uses a 3rd party repair shop ant to both our surprise they use aftermarket parts instead of Apple. Here is the best part, and biggest surprise to me... since then I left Verizon to go to a competitor with the device Verizon is REFUSING to stand behind the product Warranty on a 3 week old phone. They will not do anything at all  so here is my warning do NOT buy a device certified preowned or like new products from Verizon at full price and take it to another company. I asked him what woul be the difference if I purchased it from them at full price went somewhere else wit it and had a problem with it I explained a device warranty is a device warranty not a service and I was told it's the same applies if you don't have them as a service provider your out of luck, and he said too bad for your luck and I am ending the call. He was supposed to be a manager.

I just had to do my first "like new" replacement for my Galaxy Nexus, and realized it had a good run compared to other phones on Verizon. (about 1.5 years...the others had to be replaced 2 or 3 times in that time frame.) But, when I got it home and was setting it up, saw what looked like screen burn and thought it was just my eyes...Well, after a couple days, began to realize that it wasn't. Two areas that are pure black vs. the darkish gray... One kind of looks like a banner ad. I didn't know that new phones came with this...I mean, if my phone is like new with screen burn, then the new ones should have it too, right?
Beings that Verizon has pretty much phased out the Galaxy Nexus because of the relationship going sour with Google, we will be lucky to see any like new replacement that is worth a poop. Business relationships decline all the time, and unfortunately, we are the ones that get the short end of the stick.
Have lost all faith in Verizon....

  • "like new phone"

So I'm now on my 2nd "like new" replacement and this one is already acting up after just getting it today,   So my question is how many time does Verizon replace the phone before we try something different?

The official policy is to continue to offer a "like new" replacement of the same model until the warranty and/or insurance coverage expires.  If the same model is not available, a comparable one will be offered.
A lot of complaining may get you a different result, but there is no longer a policy to give people a choice of another model after X number of defective refurbished devices.
Of course, you can purchase a used phone from another source, pay full retail from Verizon, or just wait until your upgrade to get another phone as well.

  • Dont like new phone

I just upgraded today to the thunderbolt and i dont like it.  Its too big and complicated.  i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about a smartphone that was smaller but could still keep up with my busy life.  also would i be charged if i take it back tomrrow and exchange it?

You have 14 days to take it back, and you can exchange your phone once.  Most of the Android phones Verizon offers are smaller than the Thunderbolt (I think many have a 4" screen).  If you like the operating system, go to the store and play with all of the Android devices they have in stock.  Choose the one that fits your hand well and you enjoy using.

  • I recently bought 10gb of iCloud data for £10 totalling my date to 15gb but it's almost full and I need a new phone, is the only way to save all my 1300 pictures

Please may someone help me in regards to the above, I have a very old laptop and do not trust it for holding all my photos, is iCloud the best place to store them? & should I just bite the bullet and buy more data? New phone is needed soon, this one is 16gb I have just under 400 contacts & roughly 1450 photos & videos from the last 2 years. I don't really understand why if the phone is 16gb i only have 15gb on iCloud, I'm guessing that means I would only lose 1gb somewhere?
Sorry to sound like a total dummy but would really appreciate advice on this.
    Many thanks

Import them from the camera roll to your computer and delete them off your device as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  You can then put the photos in a folder and sync them back to your device by selecting it on the Photos tab of your iTunes sync settings.  They will appear on you phone in the Photo Library album, which is not included in the iCloud backup (because they are already backed up on your computer), and thus won't take any of your iCloud storage.
Another approach of course would be to start backing up to your computer using iTunes instead of to iCloud.

  • Does a new contract mean you should get new phone? NEW MEANS NEW,RIGHT?

I signed a 2 year contract and got what I was told was a brand new Blackberry Tour. Problem is when I sent in the rebate, they said the rebate was already given for that particular device.
Long story short, the phone had so many problems it was not usable 4 of 7 days a week. Had 5 replacements in 6 months and still had to buy a prepaid phone to make calls.
After having made a federal case out it, they sent a new phone, different model because the Tours were defective per RIM. However, they snuck in a total contract restart and added 9 months to my contract.
Seems to me this is just wrong. Trying to get this sorted out has cost me at least 15 solid working days and still they wont revert the contract to original start date.
I decided I can't waste anymore time fighting with Verizon to correct their problem and have heard the best ways to resolve issues like this is and FCC complaint and filing in small claims court for the fees they want to charge to end contract early (according to their start date, not mine) it would be so nice to get some reimbursement for money lost not only in time spent haggling over the issue but actual business lost because I didn't have a working phone.
I was a private contractor and can show on paper every time I missed out on a job because the phone didn't turn on or couldn't make calls. I was getting $55-85 an hour too. This ought to be an interesting one now that I'm ill and unable to work anymore. I have a lot of time to spend filing complaints.

Verizon sells certified like new devices for those who wish to get a cheaper, but still functional phone. It sounds like you purchased one of the highly discounted certified like new models.

  • I had to return my 3GS for a new phone but I have a question.

I purchased my 3GS about 2 weeks ago and I noticed about 6 stuck green pixels so before my 14 days where up I took it to Apple for an exchange. The guy said he can do a one time exchange, however he got another phone from this white box. I asked him 3 times if it was refurb and he said no it was brand new. He said they get replacement phones because to pack them in the original box with the original wires and stuff cost apple money. So far no stuck pixels and it works great. The serial number starts with 8 and it looks like it was a made on the 29th week.
    Could it be a refurb?

Unlikely; there hasn't been enough time to refurbish returns since the original release. Even if it is, so what? Refurbs are generally tested more thoroughly than new phones, which are mass produced and undergo only basic automatic testing. Which is why some new phones need to be returned.

  • I am unable to restore from iCloud backup because the new phone has iOS 8.1.2 and the old phone has iOS 8.2? Any help.

I Have just bought an iPhone 6 and want to restore my iPhone 4s via iCloud backup to the new iPhone 6. The setup of the iPhone 6 halted because according to the new phone it has iOS 8.1.2 whereas the backups were stored using iOS 8.2 following my updating of the iPhone 4S recently. How do I jump through this hoop? How do I update the new phone to iOS 8.2 without serring it up first? Anyone, please help?

Update the new phone to the same version that has been used to create the backup. In your case, the new device has to run 8.2 to be able to use the backup made with the other device.
Setting it back to factory settings will install the newest version and after that you can use the backup made under 8.2

Using More than One iDevice on the Same Computer
This applies mainly to couples who are adding another device and do not want their email, messages, etc. being duplicated on both devices. To begin read: How to use multiple iPhone, iPad, or iPod devices with one computer. You need to establish a separate Apple ID and password for whomever will use the new iDevice. See Apple - My Apple ID and Frequently asked questions about Apple ID. The easiest way is to do this on the computer using iTunes: iTunes- How to set up an Apple ID within iTunes.
On the computer create a new user account for the person with the new iDevice. This will be the user account that person will always use. He/She will no longer use the other user account. This way that person will have a separate iTunes Library. Note that once done you cannot "share" apps under a single Apple ID. Each of you must purchase your own apps under your own Apple ID. When you decide to split up like this one of you will need to re-purchase the apps that they want to use.
Start by transferring the new device(s) to a new account along with all your data.  Save any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless they are already in the camera roll) by opening your Photos app, tap on Albums icon at the bottom. Now, tap on My Photo Stream album; tap Select; tap on the photos you want to select;, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow) in the lower left corner; then tap Save to Camera Roll.
If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep then you need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself. Later you can copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account.
Tap on Settings > iCloud > Delete Account (only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud; the person keeping the current account will not be affected,) provide the password to turn off Find My Phone and choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted.  Sign in with a different Apple ID to create your new account. Choose Merge to upload your data.
Once you are on separate accounts, you can each go to icloud.com and delete the other person's data from your account.
Note: The essence of the above was created by user, randers4. I
have made substantial changes to improve readability and syntax.

    Please can you help....
I ordered an iPhone 5s in early September from the orange shop in Chamonix Mont-Blanc France.
I needed a new phone as i dropped my iPhone and broke it so it thought i would upgrade.
I was asked in the shop if I wanted a black or white one, I asked for a Black one, as all my iPhones have all been Black as I DON'T LIKE White ones. (sorry)
I was told my phone would arrive in a week so I waited with broken phone for new one. The following week I was told it would be the following week, the following week i was told the same but the assistant in the shop told me they would ring me when it arrived. Three days later i recieved a text from the shop to say the phone would be in tomorrow, when I went in they said it had not arrived and they would call me when it was in the shop.
They called me on Thursday the 17th of October to say the phone was in the shop.
I arrived at the shop at 6:00pm after my work, the shop closes at 7:00pm. I recieved the phone, signed for it and extra unwanted insurance with I was told I could only canceled in a month. I was then told they didn't have any sim cards in the shop, i said no problem the Phone i assume will need charging so i will take it home and charge it and return for the sim tomorrow.
    So the Phone remained boxed.
When I returned home and opened the box I realised it was a white one, I replaced the lid put it back in the bag, and returned it to the shop first thing Friday 18th October, to point out the error, only to be told "to bad" ?? I was told I could have changed it the night before but not this morning? They said I had ordered a Black one but as I had signed for a White one nothing can be done. I was angry and left the shop. I returned later the same day with a French friend to try and resolve this problem, as I wasn't sure if something was being lost in translation. I didn't think I was being unreasonable, it is a very expensive piece of equipment and this wasn't what i wanted. They told my friend that the phone was not available in Black, that was the 5, and that the 5s was only available in silver and gold, and that mine was a silver one.
I then thought it was my mistake as it was a new phone. She put a sim in the phone put it in the box and I left for a business meeting only to arrive and see a Black iPhone 5s sitting on the table??
So I then returned back to the shop with the Black one and mine still all boxed and untouched to prove they had blatantly lied to me an hour ago, only to be told that there was nothing they were prepared to do.
Is this fair practice ? I am at a loss with this and am looking for help ?

A minor point, but it may avoid a little confusion if, instead of saying "black" in reference to the iPhone 5s, say "space gray":
