Pls help with running on Linux

Hello,
I can't figure out why running Java (1.4.1_01) takes up too much of system resources on my RH Linux 6.2 machine.
Running a simple swing java IDE (called Dr.Java), or any other swing application, renders system performance slow, especially of GUI. For example, starting Netscape requires more than 8 seconds, whereas it's 1-2 seconds in "normal" situation, plus repainting of application canvasses would halt. System monitor shows that 45(!) processes named "java" take up 600Mb of memory (I don't have that much:)) - when Netscape takes only 10Mb.
Every "java" process is shown to occupy either 26 or 11Mb.
Running the same program on win2k on the same computer doesn't result in any notable change in performance speed.
Is this normal? - for a 450Gz, 192RAM machine.
Or should I fix smth in Xserver configuration of whatever else?

Actually, the OS does make a difference - and the RH 6.2 is definitely ancient. If you're comparing WinXP to that, you're comparing apples to oranges, so to speak. Upgrade your RedHat and you'll see a very large improvement as the newer kernels have much better memory management, threading, etc. Hell, I'm surprised you could get 1.4 to run under 6.2!
Regarding Solaris - yes, it's great if you have the money and hardware and like using 20-year-old verions of Unix programs (their "vi" is positively retarded). But in actual operations on an Intel-based, single processor machine, there doesn't seem to be too much of a difference in performance.

I need a help to resolve my problem.Actually i have a JSP page with a list box. When i select some value in the list box, appropriate values must list out according to the selected value.And i have a submit button to process that jsp page.
I wrote a validation as all the fields must be entered to submit a page.

Hi! The reason is that in the onChange property you are doing the submit, so, when you select something, it goes automatically and never pases through your validation function. So, remove that onChange. Next, the button is a submit buton, so, no matter what your validation does, the page will go. You need to change the submit type of the button to just button (<input type="button" onclick="function to validate">) and then you will get what you want. By the way, this is NOT a Java question, is more JavaScript question.

I'm new to programming with threads. I want to know how to run
multiple threads at the same time. Particularly for making games
in Java which I'm also begining to learn. For running multiple

Each thread is presumably performing a task. You may be performing the same task multiple times or be performing different tasks at once. Either way, each task would typically be contained within the run() method of a class. This class would either be a subclass of java.lang.Thread (extends Thread) or would be an implementation of java.lang.Runnable (implements Runnable). In either case, you would define a method with signature (public void run()...). The difference comes into play when you wish to actually perform one of these tasks. With a subclass of Thread, you would simply perform:
new MyTask().start();
With an implementation of Runnable, you would do this:
new Thread(new MyTask()).start();
This assumes you don't need to monitor the threads, won't be sending any messages to your tasks or any such thing. If that were the case, you would need to tuck away those returns to new MyTask() for later access.
In order to launch two threads simultaneously, you would have something along the lines of:
new MyTask().start();
new MyOtherTask().start();
Now it is perfectly possible that MyTask() would complete before MyOtherTask() managed to start in which case it wouldn't appear as if you had actually had multiple threads running, but for non-trivial tasks, the two will likely overlap. And of course, in a game, these tasks would likely be launched in response to user input, which means that you wouldn't have any control over when or in what order they executed.
Anyhow, it's as simple as that. You should also consider following the Java Threading trail which shows a simple example of using multiple threads. You can find it at:

Help with running bonjour

I can't get bonjour to run on my computer. I have tried uninstalling, installing the previous version and downloading bonjour for windows from apple.The service starts normally and is running but the IE plugin shows "bonjour service not available", running the printing wizard shows the same. I ran the dns-sd which shows

I have itunes 8 installed, haven't found the need to use bonjour before so would usually uninstall it. Don't know much about bonjour, tried searching the forums but couldn't come up with anything. Can anyone help with this?

I get into the same situation consistently after switching the network connection from Ethernet LAN to Wireless LAN. The only fix I know of is to restart the PC.

Pls help with a program

I'm making a quiz, and i store the questions in a textfile. The user can choose from 3 quizes, either Plate Tectonics, Rivers or Rocks. I managed to call the questions from Java. Each quiz has a set of 10 questions. In the code below i only included the answers to the Plate Tectonics Quiz, which i stored in an array. What i'm having problem with is, that its not working correctly, since it is displaying, after answering all the questions correctly that i have answered 0 questions from 1 question. First of all it should say out of 10 questions because i have 10 questions, and its not really working because even if i answer them all corrctly it still says 0 out of 1 question. Can someone pls help me find the error? Thanks a lot.

Pls help with extracting dates

I wish to produce the output in table customer1 based on the customer table DOP field.
The values in DOP (0030500) indicates wed and fri, (0000007) indicates sunday.
how can i extract all the dates for wed and fri (0030500) between the period ST_DT and ED_DT (23/02/2005) to (20/03/2005).

Need Help with running expect script on MAC OS

Need help with running a Java program on Linux

I am trying to get a Java program to run on a Linux machine. The program is actually meant for a Mac computer. I want to see if someone with Java experience can help me determine what is causing the program to stall. I was successful in getting it installed on my Linux machine and to partially run.
The program is an interface to a database. I get the login screen to appear, but then once I enter my information and hit enter the rest of the program never shows, however, it does appear to connect in the background.
Here is the error when I launch the .jar file from the command screen:

I am not a programmer and I am hoping this will make some sense to someone. Any help in resolving this is greatly appreciated!

Well, without knowing a little bit about programming, and how to run your debugger, I don't think you're going to fix it. The IllegalArgumentException is saying that some call does not like what it's getting. So you'll have to go in an refactor at least that part of the code.

hi i am having a error running this banking application "Bank_Application_System"
the application is a banking system where customers can withdraw and deposit money and other functions. Q #1 (and possibly the only question) - why are you using NDS for this?

Help with running OS X 10.5 with a GMA X3100 video card

I am trying to boot Mac OS X 10.5 on my iPod. I kept booting, and every time it came up with a kernel panic. I ran it in Verbose mode, and it said that the video card was not supported. The updaters said that my iPod didn't meet the requirements, which I think that Leopard needs to be succsessfully booted to be able to update. I need help booting into Leopard so I can do some things.

   I am using SQL Command for my report and in the command my date fields are of "Date" datatype.
   I am using Crystal Reports XI R2,driver - CR Oracle ODBC Driver 5.1

is an Oracle error.
The following document would be helpful:
ORA-01830:     date format picture ends before converting entire input string
Cause:     A valid date format picture included extra data. The first part of the format picture was converted into a valid date, but the remaining data was not required.
Action:     Check the specifications for date format pictures and correct the statement.

I need all the help I can get from each of you.
I have to implement a GUI for system admin to interact with JMS activities and I have no clues what kind of activities I should display on the GUI in term of JMS. Pls. advice if you have done something like/similar to this or have some ideas.

Check out Hermes JMS Explorer (http://hermesjms.sourceforge.net) - it can do just about all you can do without actually using server libraries and hooking into preexisting JMS server code.
It allows you to browse JMS destinations (queues, topics) as well as monitor, consume and produce (put) messages.
