Plug-in max heap space for IE on Windows Vista

G'day,
The organisation I work for will be moving from Windows 2000 to Windows Vista later this year.
We'll be including JRE6 as part of the standard desktop installation :-)
Ahead of that I'd like to know the default maximum heap-space configuration for JRE6 running in IE7 on Windows Vista.
Elsewhere I've read it's as low as 64M (!)

It is not necessarily for posting if you feel this write-up is too detailed. First I want to let you know that I am a novice just trying to help MYSELF, JAVA and others with the same or similar problem. This is going to be a very long post, just like one you (kbrussel) posted about this problem. I realize it may be unnecessary but maybe HARDWARE could be the problem so I listed all my hardware. More Data is better than LESS data I feel!
Background: I have the identical problems on 2 different Gateway Models over almost a year.
System # 01 is an Older Gateway Computer 838GM (Media Center) Pentium 4 - 630 HT Processor 3.0 GHz/2MB Cache, 1.536 GB of RAM (1.49GB Recognized) PC3200 with 800 MHz FSB and 200 GB Hard Drive running Windows XP Media Center 2002 SP2 with all latest updates (Actually I was told it is XP Professional plus additional programs for media) and a GMA900 on-board Video outputting to a Gateway EV700 CTR Monitor using a Linksys Cable Modem Model: BEFCMU10 Version 4.0 and Comcast Broadband ISP for Internet Connection.
System # 02 is a Newer Gateway Computer GM5457E (Media Center) Core 2 Duo Processor E6320 1.86 GHz per CPU Core @ 1066 MHz FSB/4MB Cache, 4.096 GB of RAM (3.405216GB Available to Windows) PC5400 with Intel 945G Chip Set, a SATA II 500 GB Hard Drive running Windows Vista Home Premium V 6.0 (Build 6000) and an NVIDIA GE Force 7500LE Video Card outputting DVI to a new Acer AL2223W HDLCD 22" Monitor using a Linksys Cable Modem Model: BEFCMU10 Version 4.0 and Comcast Broadband ISP for Internet Connection.
I am a high volume quick trading new "day trader" (actually a "minute" trader) and I have been having an "EXTREEME" problem over the past 10 months, maybe longer, with my older and my newer computer SYSTEMS of locking up (looping, I think, nothing using JAVA seems to work, totally locked) when running JAVA based TD Ameritrade�s "Command Center 2.0". During early very FAST trading minutes (usually 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM) with all functions (limited to 6 each functions each by TD Ameritrade), maybe 20-28 windows working at the same time. I use "Charts, Last Sales, Level II, Watch Lists, Trade Tickets, Actives", as a "DAY-TRADER". The JAVA plug-in providing "streaming" data to my older computer was unreliable, always locking-up. I bought a totally new computer system after I was told by TD Ameritrade TECHNICAL that "IT COULD BE MY OLDER COMPUTER". I bought a new computer, and the same problem, lock-up on this computer with CPU usage between 52% and 59%. I have spent over 12 hours with many different TD Ameritrade technicians trying to help me. I have tried both foxfire and IE and problem is on both. I place a buy order trade and then I need to sell it in less than a minute some times. I can not afford for JAVA to lock up on me for any number of SECONDS while I am trading, and JAVA has done that to me so many times I can�t count. By the time that I "End Task" and then re-open my account I can be down (LOST) several thousand dollars. This only happens when the market is trading furiously and JAVA can�t keep up, at least on my computer. I have tried all modification fixes that TD Ameritrade technicians have given me, and some on your blog http://forum.java.sun.com/profile.jspa?userID=523605), and some fixes from other sites that have been recommended, but I still fear that the problem is "not fixed". I have set -Xmx to "-Xmx100m" and Temp Internet Files to 100 MB. This has worked so far for me all day today but the stock market was not TOO busy and I did not have my second trading account up as I usually do. I think the problem is amplified when the "Market Volume" is very high, meaning that the data is constantly streaming so fast that either JAVA or my computer cannot keep up. I also noticed that there is a totally new version of JAVA (http://www.java.net/download/jdk6/6u10/promoted/b11/binaries/jre-6u10-ea-bin-b11-windows-i586-p-24_jan_2008.exe), do you think I should try this version?? , I had version 6 I think rev.4 a while ago and it failed too. Is this version 6 newer than a month or so ago ??? I am now running 1.6.0 (build 1.6.0_03-b05)
I have not tried all solutions on you list of "ALL" but this fix seems to work so far, that is I set parameters to -Xmx100m works for me so far, just one day. I will let you know of new failures or continuing good operation,
Thanks Russ Bower [email protected] I NEED THIS JAVA program TO WORK RELIABLY. Also it seems to be a problem on SCOTT Trade also from a blog I visited, several people claiming it is a JAVA bug.

The article says that I should upgrade to the latest iTunes. I am on the latest iTunes version.
If you could read just a tiny little bit further, under the "Additional Information" section immediately after that, it says:
If you are still experiencing this issue when syncing, or have not installed Xcode 4 and get this alert:
Follow the troubleshooting steps in Mac OS X v10.5, v10.6: Resetting the SyncServices folder.
If the issue is still unresolved, follow steps in Sync Services: Advanced troubleshooting for contact and calendar syncing.
Have you tried those measures?

I need the updates because I just purchased a Nikon D60 and my Photoshop does not read the .NEF files produced by the camera.

Do you really mean the Nikon D60 which shipped in 2008? Was it purchased secondhand?
The Nikon D60 was first supported in Adobe Camera Raw 4.4.
Photoshop CS4 ships with Camera Raw 5.0 so it can read D60 NEF files out of the box. No updates required.
If you do mean the D60 then something else must be going on. e.g. are you using Nikon software to transfer files from camera to computer?

ITunes 10 will not connect to Store, let me sign in, check for updates on Windows Vista 32 bit.

I cannot check for updates, sign in, or connect to the store so all my app downloads must be done from my device.

Can't use the same JVMPI min=max heap setting for JVMTI

I have a DLL that serves as both PI and TI library. When using PI, I can specify -XmsNNNNm -XmxNNNNm but the same setting would not work when switching to TI. I must lower the heap setting by as much as 725M on a Windows box. On UNIX, I only need to lower it by 5-20M depending on machines. It does not matter when JVM 1.5 or 1.6 is used.
I do specify a base address for the Windows library.
Any help is appreciated.

bspike, are you sure your DLL is actually getting loaded at the rebase address? The rebase address is just a hint; if the address space is occupied at DLL load time (maybe by another DLL), Windows will load your DLL somewhere else. I'm wondering if this could be happening in your case, and the DLL is getting loaded in a bad spot. I usually use vadump.exe (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3fe0961b-ea72-40eb-a052-f68bac5a8ec1&displaylang=en to print, for a particular process, where the DLLs actually get loaded:
c:\hotspot>vadump -sv -p 3624
Symbols loaded: 00400000 : 00AF6000 FIREFOX.EXE
Symbols loaded: 7C900000 : 7C9B0000 ntdll.dll
Symbols loaded: 7C800000 : 7C8F5000 kernel32.dll

Even if it's not the specific problem I mentioned above, vadump might help diagnose the reason a large contiguous region isn't available.

How to increase the Java Heap Space for a main method

Hello all,
after a given number of calculations inside a class with main-method, I get an OutOfMemoryError (Java Heap Size).
So I'm just trying to increase the Heap Size Creator uses, but it won't work.
After reading a lot of posts and online-articles, I tried the following:
1) I changed the -Xms and -Xmx options (to 512m) both in
$CREATOR/SunAppServer8/domains/creator/config/domain.xml and
$CREATOR/etc/creator.conf (this file also points to the Creator built-in JDK)
2) additionally I tried to start Creator from the console with the respective option:
./creator -J-Xmx512m
The memory toolbar shows the right value, but when I use
System.out.println("JVM maximum memory:\t"+Runtime.getRuntime().maxMemory()/1024+" KB\n");it always says 64 MB, no matter which option I chose in the config-files.
So how can I increase this value?

this was an important hint. Additionally I had to create a new "Java Class Library" project with a copy of the needed files (those that are not dependent on the Application Server). Then I could use the option you mentioned.
Unfortunately, when I try to run the file with
java -jar FILENAME.jarit won't work, because the archive is not complete: MANIFEST.MF lacks the main-class and all involved libraries.
I managed to add the main-class attribute manually, but adding all library references seems to be very error-prone.
So does anyone know if I did something wrong or if this is a bug of Creator?

short answer:
In command prompt or cygwin.
long answer:
if you are uisng comman prompt call
set ANT_OPTS=-Xmx500M
before calling the ant command.
if you using cygwin use
export ANT_OPTS=-Xmx500M
before calling the ant command.
In case you are using unix based OS. use
export ANT_OPTS=-Xmx500M
before calling the ant command.
Also you can set ANT_OPTS as an enviornment variable.

Sync NOT WORKING for Photos on Windows Vista machine

Can someone please offer advice. When I plug the iPhone in, Contacts sync, Calendars sync, music/movies sync, then it just says Sync in Progress on the phone, and Syncing "My iPhone" in iTunes but it doesn't do anything. I left it going for a long time. Nothing. If I use the slider on the iPhone to cancel the sync, everything is there except for the photo albums I selected.
Any ideas?

Yep - I've got Vista same issue BUT moved the photos that I wanted on my iphone to a seperate folder such as iphone photos. Then browsed from itunes to the folder i set up. Now no problem. Do you have problems syncing your calendar. I've tried everything and it hasn't happened yet. !!!!!

Question for iPod Touch/Windows Vista Users

Has any other Vista users out there had any problems syncing?
As long as I don't sync large amounts of data, it works fine...but when I sync a lot of songs at once, or just 1 full length movie, I get playback problems. Some songs will skip and stutter, but that can usually be fixed by recopying the songs individually. Movies (even ones downloaded from iTunes) will not play all the way through. They will either crash and take me back to the videos menu, or they will reset the iPod Touch. Because movies are so large, simply resyncing them will not solve the problem.
I have tried resetting and restoring the iPod Touch, and reinstalling iTunes, and nothing has corrected this problem. I don't think it is a problem with the iPod Touch, because this doesn't happen when I sync using a friend's Windows XP computer.
Has this happened to anyone else? Any thoughts on how to solve this problem?

I have the exact same problem - point for point, my iPod touch is doing exactly as you described. I have tried all sorts of things, but to no avail.
You added a new USB card to your machine, and that has solved the problem? May I ask if you still use your original 'onboard' USB for all of your other peripherals, leaving the new USB card for just your iPod? perhaps it was one of your other peripherals that was causing the problem. Just a thought, but I am certainly glad to hear that the problem is solvable. USB cards aren't very expensive, perhaps I should go invest in one to see if it solves the problem for me too.

Compatibilty mode for itunes in windows vista

when i start itunes a get a message saying itunes compatibilty mode is set for an earlier version of windows. i went to itunes application hit properties then compatibility tab and unchecked the box for compatibilty mode but i still get the same message. does anyone know how to get rid of this message?

I Just got an iPhone 5s and when I pulled my phone into my computer it's says I have to update my iTunes in order to get to my iphone through iTunes and the update comes up for iturns 12.0.1 but everytime its goes to update it says there was an error. Please help I don't want to have to delete iTunes and reinstall it because I'm afraid of losing all my content.

SSD drives for an "old" Windows Vista laptop

Hi everyone,
I am trying to make a general upgrade for my old computer, which I use at work for (somewhat heavy) data analyses. I am planning on increasing my RAM memory to 8gb (see post here) and now I am wondering if upgrading my internal storage would change something.
Changing my HDD to an SSD would be possible / recommendable? What kinds of SSD can I use in this model? Will I need to upgrade my windows OS too?
Currently I am running XP 32bit (after downgrading from vista) alongside with Ubuntu 64 bit.
I believe Vista and Windows 7 are optimized for SSD (specially 7, as related here) so probably I would need to upgrade to W7 too?

Vista is not optimized for an SSD natively. I would recommend at least Windows 7 for an SSD. Current Linux kernels also have SSD support (TRIM enabled). You can install any 2.5 inch wide and 7 or 9.5 mm thick SATA SSD. My recommendation is a Samsung Evo 840 or 850 model. Avoid the Crucial MX100 as it has caused a lot of issues reported here for reasons that have not yet been fully explained.

Wireless setup for deskjet 3050A - windows vista 64-bit

When attempting to set up wireless printer it advises to temporarily connect a USB cable. When I do this the computer hangs and won't advance. The first time I attempted to install it said my password was wrong. I've not been able to get back to that point where it asks for a password. I've tried re-installing, restarting, etc. and nothing seems to work.

Hi there.
I got DD and DTS working, in Vista 64, by using the X-Fi Dell drivers (as mentioned here elsewhere).
Copy the file : ctac32k.sys from the amd64 folder, inside drivers/wdm/win2k_xp/amd64, to Windows/system32/drivers.
Overwrite the file already there, reboot.
Should now have a 'decoder' tab in the Creative Audio Console.
