PNG Metadata and Adobe Products

Hi All. I have written a piece of code that inserts xmp metadata into a PNG file, using the method supplied by Adobe (ie. inserting a new iTXT chunk with the keyword "XML:com.adobe.xmp" followed by the xmp metdata). I am pretty sure I have done this correctly and the file comes out the other side of processing in tact. I have also read in the resulting file and checked that the new chunk now exists and the metadata is fully intact within the file.
However, it seems that Adobe Photoshop does not recognise this new metadata chunk and you can't view it in the file info. I would have thought that since Adobe recommended inserting metadata in this fashion, it would also support the viewing of the metadata.
Can anybody provide me with information in regards to this?

Photoshop does not support accessing XMP embedded in a .png file.
Photoshop for Mac falsely appears to save XMP for a .png from one opening to the next, but it is not being saved in an embedded XMP packet, rather it is saved in the Mac OS file resource fork.
However, Bridge does support XMP in a .png file. Bridge only looks in the embedded XMP packet, and ignores the Mac OS file resource fork.
Use Bridge, not Photoshop, to see if your code is inserting the XMP correctly.

If you have a problem with Adobe products, voice your issues with them.
It is the software developers responsibility to maintain compatability
with any operating system, beit OSX or Windows.

Disable\Remove "Check for Update" "Lightroom online" and "Adobe Product Improvement Program"

I wanted to confirm if it is possible to remove\Disbale the options like "Check for Update" "Lightroom online" and "Adobe Product Improvement Program"
under help menu in adobe lightroom 5.3? I intend to deply this application and want these options to be unavailable for the User.

So far as I know, the only way to make these features non-functioning is to detach the computer from the internet.

Graphic Design and Adobe Products

I am a graphic design student, graduating in about a year. I maxxed out my MBP's ram and bought my first mac in hopes that it would be a great tool for graphics. I see that photoshop and illustrator (adobe tools) are running through rosetta and haven't yet (or will be?) been ported.
My question is this, will this machine be the right tool for graphics work? Im pretty concerned about this and really didn't think twice about it when i ordered - i figured adobe products would work flawlessly, as they always have.
any ideas? (ie, try to make me feel somewhat better?)

Word on the street is that Photoshop under Rosetta is useable, but a tad slow for really heavy work. Not great news, but that an application like Photoshop works acceptably on a completely different processor than what it was written for is a minor miracle. The only real way to know for sure that it will meet your needs is to give it a go.
The good news is:
- you made the right choice in maxing out the RAM
- Rosetta apparently gets quicker with age due to caching
- If the MBP sells well, Adobe is likely to bring forward a universal version of PS (send them feedback to let them know that you are interested in a universal version)
If you do find that PS performance is not acceptable you have a few (not great) options:
- return the MBP for a PB G4 or G5 iMac/Powermac (you will get better performance from PPC native versions of PS, but performance is not likely to be as good as the MBP when a universal version of PS is released and the MBP is likely to be a better long term investment)
- try the new universal binary version of GIMP
Other more experimental options to try if you get desperate:
- try running older windows versions of PS (I think v 5 works) under Darwine
- try running more current Windows versions on a virtual PC (only current (and messy) option is to boot into Linux and use VMWare, but I expect there will be other options before we see a universal PS: intel version of iEmulator is apparently due out shortly and I suspect that a VMWare for OSX intel won't be too far off)

Workflow and Adobe Products. Is Lightroom the best way to go?

I am somewhere between a serious hobbyist and pro just based on shear number of photos I take and because in shoot in RAW. I've been using Elements for years. I'm dedicating my year to upping my game process wise at least.
I added Bridge but it doesn't play well with Elements 11. I tried Lightroom 4 in the past and hated it. And now Adobe has both Photoshop and Lightroom available for $10/month. What to do what to do? I could stick with Elements. I could add Lightroom 5 and tweak it for Elements. I could abandon Elements and switch to Lightroom 5 plus Photoshop CC. What kind of workflow do you use?
Last night I started trialing Lightroom 5 and it does not have face recognition like Elements 11 does. I'm not sure I can live without face recognition.
Today I tried adding 275 photos to the map in Lightroom. I couldn't figure it out. After 20 minutes I gave up. This is another feature that I use heavily in Elements 11.
I thought Bridge or Lightroom would be the way to go but both seem to be coming up short. I go through about 500 pics a week so I need something to improve my workflow.

I've been using PS since 1994 (v3.0) and Lightroom since 2007 (v1.0). In my opinion, for digital photography work LR is the best tool for organizing, editing, and creating output of your camera image files. For more complex edits LR's 'Edit In Photoshop' feature quickly gets your image inside PS (or PSE) with your LR edits for further processing. If you talk to some of the other PS "old-timers" in the PS forum many will tell you LR is for amateurs and PS with Bridge is for "serious" work. I guess it depends on your preference and how experienced you are with PS and Bridge. I use all three (PS, Bridge, LR), but 95% of my work is done using only LR.
As dj_paige has already mentioned, you'll be disappointed if you jump in and use LR without watching and reading the many LR tutorials available. The LR Forum is full of posts from LR beginners who simply haven't gotten a clue on how to use the program's tools. As you said, "I've been using Elements for years. I'm dedicating my year to upping my game process wise at least." If you're willing to put in some time to learn how to use LR you won't be disappointed.

When reinstalling creative cloud and adobe products i only get the ''try'' button.

Hi i have a problem in my creative cloud. About 3 months ago i purchased the creative cloud collection and 4 days ago i reinstalled windows so my pc would be faster again but when i wanted to reinstall my creative cloud products it gives me only the ''try'' option. I cannot install the lincensed product which i have paid for and when i try to re-redeem the activation code it say it has already been redeemed.
Does this mean i have lost CC and have to purchase it again? i sure would be upset then.

Since I upgraded to Mavericks, Finder, Word 2008, and Adobe Products barely work

I upgraded my 2010 MacBook Pro to Mavericks a few months ago. Since the upgrade things have spun out of control. The finder barely works. It takes minutes (yes, minutes) to open and look through folders. The spinning color wheel seems to run constantly. On a related note, it takes between 10-60 seconds to find and open an email attachment (from gmail to computer) or word/excel/pdf file from any of those software packages. Lastly, word 2008 and even the new Adobe Pro seem to crash regularly now. Any idea what is happening? I took my machine into a "geek" and they suggested I get a new hard drive. I paid $200+ for all of the diagnostics and the new drive and the problems persist.

Adobe is one of my business mainstays. I've read that there are a lot of problems with Adobe programs and this latest update.
What is the verdict on 10.4.6? Wait for .7?

I am running PS CS2 with 10.4.6 without any problems at all. Most of the problems that I have read about are if you are attempting to save directly from PS to storage on the network.

Adobe products (Dreamweaver CS 3 and CS4) and FTP failures in Snow Leopard

Hi all, this is a bit of a cross post, sorry, but I wanted to be a bit more precise about the nature of a problem many folks are voicing. That is, Dreamweaver and Adobe products are trouble it seems, particularly around the FTP function (there are other issues too). Yet it does not affect machines universally.
For instance, initially after the Snow Leopard update CS3 (Dreamwearver) worked fine, the for me poof the FTP client in Dreamweaver failed with the ubiquitous Permissions error.
On line forums suggest:
1) recreating all Dreamweaver accounts with ==> various reports of success.
2) Using a direct IP address to the server in question....==> also mixed results.
3) Reinstall CSx--==> not a fix.
So for those of us tearing hair out over the problem, Adobe itself has been no help, anyone find a patch or have an untried idea?

Mac Pro - Final Cut Studio 2 - Adobe Production Premium - NO FLASH PLAYING!

I recently purchased a Mac Pro with Leopard, Final Cut Studio 2, and Adobe Production Premium suite. I got everything setup yesterday, and I exported a Quicktime reference file from Final Cut, and brought it into Flash CS3 Media Encoder. The file seemed to encode fine, but when I try to open it, it shows that the Flash Player opens, but the video never actually opens. I also tired to import the FLV file into Flash Pro, and it acts as though it imports, but it does let me preview it. The ONLY thing that I think could have caused a problem is that I also have Sorenson Squeeze installed, which has its own On2 VP6 encoder. Again, this may have nothing to do with it since I copied the file to another Mac machine that did not have Sorenson on it, and downloaded the standalone Flash Player, and it acted the same. Any ideas on why FLV files would not play back would be greatly appreciated. I have ALL updates installed for OS X Leopard, as well as the CS3 collection. Thanks in advance.

After downloading an FLV player, and realizing that Adobe Flash Player will not work, all is swimming.

Developer licensing for CS and CC products

Hello,
I am trying to find information on obtaining developer licensing for older Adobe CS and current Adobe CC products.
I am a software developer and my software interacts with all Mac Desktop applications via Apple's Accessibility API. In order to ensure proper communication between my app and Adobe Apps, I need to be able to run Adobe Apps for the purpose of testing. Ideally, I am hoping that Adobe has a developer program or is able to (on a case-by-case basis) provide licenses to a developer either a) at a discount or b) do some sort of license trade. If anyone know who to contact or what options are available, I would really appreciate some assistance. I have looked at the Adobe developer programs and SDK's, but that is not what I am looking for. I am not developing add-ons for Adobe products but rather I need to test that my software works properly with the dozens of Adobe applications. As an independent developer purchasing licenses for all Adobe products is not an option. Additionally, I need to be able to test older versions of Adobe Apps such as the CS5 and CS6, so I need access to that software as well.
Ensuring compatibility of my Accessibility application with Adobe products has proven to be a nearly impossible task due to the inconsistent behavior of some Adobe applications. I put a lot of time and effort into making sure my software works with all applications and Adobe products seem to be the most troublesome. Most non-Adobe applications work perfectly with my application and it seems that every version of every Adobe app requires special coding within my app to accommodate Adobe apps. It would be great if Adobe could somehow accommodate my licensing needs.
Specifically, I am looking for answers to the following questions:
Does Adobe offer free/discounted developer licenses for the purpose of compatibility testing?
Does any Adobe developer program allow access to the entire Adobe product line going back as far as CS5?
Who do I contact at Adobe to discuss my needs and possible solutions?

In order to gain access to older versions you would have to have an existing license that entitle you to use them, but otherwise it's only Creative Cloud and a bit of CS6 from here on, with even CS6 phasing out. Since you are not developing actual Adobe software, this also severely limits your chances of being accepted into any Beta/ Developer program, but feel free to try:

Note that there is no global CC program and the applications are handled individually for every app. It's entirely up to the teams to let you in or kick you out.

Final Cut Studio or Adobe Production Premium Suite - which should we buy?

Hi all
Upfront, I'm not trying to start any flame wars here. My design studio is for the first time investing in video hardware and software. Most of the stuff we'll be doing will be for use on the web or DVD.
I'm not an expert on video so I'm just trying to get some useful opinions on the relative merits of Final Cut Studio and Adobe Production Premium Suite. We're entirely Mac based, so we have the choice of either.
Any thoughts and recommendations most welcome.

since this is an Apple Discussion, i'm inclined to say FCS.... it's less expensive & is complete solution start to finish for movie making, but you may want/need to get After Effects & other Adobe products to work w/ Flash media. however Adobe CS includes After Effects, Illustrator & some other things for working w/ Flash media. so get what may provide the most bang for your budget.... if you don't need everything in Adobe CS, go FCS & get the Adobe products(Illustrator, After Effects, etc...) you want/need as it occurs.

Besides iTunes and Adobe, what needs to be de-authorized

I'm getting set to buy a new Macbook Pro. Before making the move, I know that I need to de-authorize my old laptop for both iTunes and Adobe products. Are there other common programs that require this? Filemaker? Microsoft?

You don't need to 'de-authorize" Filemaker or Microsoft, but you should remove them from the computer.

Simple Bridge script will not read metadata and triggers Adobe Stock Photos

I have been trying to learn to write scripts for bridge but can't get past the most basic tasks. When I run the script on an open window in bridge it throws an "Uncaught exception metadata" error. The most bizarre thing is it sometimes causes an Adobe Stock Photo script to launch in the extendscript toolkit and throw and the "Uncaught exception metadata" error in that script. My script is as follows:

Another bit of info.... As I looked at this further, it seems to be occuring only on those photos where I previously ran camera raw from CS3. I've upgraded to CS5 but have not rerun camera raw since. I understand the camera raw engine in CS3 was different. Could this be involved? Could Lightroom be changing the metadata because the engine is updating the information and I have to save TO file to get this to synch?
update about this camera raw engine possibilty..... it would not appear to be the answer. I have some files that synch even tho lightroom develop says they are using the 2003 process version. I have some files that are on the new version that won't synch.
