PNG Transparency Lost on PDF Print

I have been googling and experimenting like a maniac for the last five hours and I am close to giving up. Please help me.
What I want to do: I want to be able to open a PDF form I created in LiveCycle Designer with Adobe Reader and print it without all the PNG's losing their transparency. I conducted an experiment to pinpoint the problem:
I started with these pictures.
background.jpg - a run-of-the-mill colour image
logo.png - a PNG-24 image with transparency saved using "Save for Web" in PS
Using MS Word, I create a blank document, insert background.jpg and then logo.png on top of it. The background is visible through the transparent portions of the PNG.
Using LC Designer, I create a blank document, insert background.jpg and then logo.png on top of it. The background is visible through the transparent portions of the PNG.
I save the MS Word document as a PDF, using default settings (not that I can identify any settings that ought to affect the issue at hand), as word-doc.pdf
I save the LC Designer document as a PDF, using default settings (not that I can identify any settings that ought to affect the issue at hand), as lc-doc.pdf
I open word-doc.pdf in Adobe Reader XI and am satisfied to see that the transparency works as intended.
I open lc-doc.pdf in Adobe Reader XI and am satisfied to see that the transparency works as intended.
Since the ultimate outcome of my project is a form where the user should be able to save their changes by printing to PDF, I do the following.
I save a copy of word-doc.pdf  by printing to Adobe PDF, and name the new file word-printed.pdf
I save a copy of LC-doc.pdf  by printing to Adobe PDF, and name the new file LC-printed.pdf
I open word-printed.pdf in Adobe Reader XI and am satisfied to see that the transparency works as intended.
I open lc-printed.pdf in Adobe Reader XI and am HORRIFIED to see that the transparency DOES NOT WORK as intended.
I try the same thing with printing to a physical printer instead of to a PDF file - same results.
I try the same thing using all different PDF version (1.X) - same results.
I try the same thing using a GIF instead of a PNG - same results.
...and so on.
PLEASE HELP!!!

You have a bigger problem than you realise. That Adobe PDF driver comes with Acrobat. Not with Windows, and not with Adobe Reader. That's why you have it. Your end users with Adobe Reader will not have it unless they also buy Acrobat (which is of course Adobe's preferred outcome and the reason for all limitations in Reader).
In terms of graphics issues, it's probably because you are using a LiveCycle Designer (XFA) form. These are not really PDF and don't use PDF quality graphics. They are just a thin PDF wrapper round a simple XML forms architecture. If you want graphics quality, use an acroform.
In terms of flattening, the popular way seems to be JavaScript, but there may be significant limitations on use in Reader. (The JavaScript API document gives information in Reader compatibility for each method).

  • Png transparency lost from PS to AI

When I use the slice tool in PS cs4 and save as a png the transparency is lost when dragging it into AI. The results were the same when I used either linked or unlinked.
When I use the "save as" in PS as a png the transparency is preserved.
Transparency is preserved in both cases. I drag the png into PS and the background is transparent, so the file is good.
The results were the same for png-8 and png-24.
Is there a setting in AI that toggles the transparency?

Sorry for the confusion. I am not dragging from ps to ai. I save the images as separate pngs, then drag the individual files to into AI.
The real issue stems from the slice tool in PS not giving me a transparency that is recognized by AI when I drag the previously saved .png file into AI.
Doing a "save as" in PS to a separate .png does preserve transparency (but I get a large region, not the specific slice) when dragged into AI. But then I have to do an extra step of cropping with Miscrosoft office picture manager. The slice tool solves the extra step, but introduces the transparency problem.

  • PNG transparency lost using event.target.loader.content.bitmapData

I load a png 24 (tripple checked alpha is ok)
    override public function loadData():void
         var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(url);
         var loader = new Loader();
         loader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, imageloadedSuccess);
         loader.load(request);
    public function imageloadedSuccess(e:Event):void
         showPNG(e.target.loader.content.bitmapData);
in Air 1.5 png (e.target.loader.content.bitmapData) has no transparency
same code using Flash 10 export transparency is there.
both of course loading same png file.
    Is this a known issue?
    I haven't tried yet using 2.0
is there a workarround to load external png and keep the transparency?
    thx by advance
    Fabrice

for each loader created, create a movieclip and add your loader to the movieclip.  assign all the properties you want to retrieve later to the movieclip and assign your event listeners to the movieclip.

  • Imported PNG Transparency Lost

I created an image in Photoshop that included a gradient layer fading from transparency to a foreground color (in this case, black). I saved this image as a PNG file and imported the file onto my Flash stage. The gradient appears on the image as expected when viewing the stage in the Flash editor, however, when I test the movie, the gradient no longer appears. Any thoughts on what may be causing this? Thanks in advance.

My bad... I forgot to resize my flash screen to the dimensions of the PNG image I was using for a background. When I would test the movie, the image of course, was cropped to the actual size of the screen, thereby leaving out the gradient at the  bottom of the image. I feel foolish now. Thanks for your offer to help, doghouseJim.

  • Adobe PDF Printer

    Hi,
I have recently deployed a network wide update of Acrobat 8.2.3.
This deploy consisted of an entire un-install (of 8.2.1 or older) and re-install of a customized 8.2.3
Since then users have reported having Adobe PDF printer gone missing. I have visited the desktops and in fact many of the machines lost the PDF printer.
Things I have done to fix this:
    - add the framedyn.dll to c:\windows\system32 and then run a repair
Any ideas on what might have caused this?
Would there be a way to fix the printing issue via a package instead of doing this manually?
    Thanks,
    Mike

But did you repair Acrobat?  The Adobe PDF printer is a function of Acrobat, not Adobe Reader.  Uninstalling/reinstalling Acrobat does essentially the same thing as a repair, but takes a bit longer.

  • Why have I lost PDF printing capability through the File Print menu?  When will it be fixed?

Why have I lost PDF printing capability through the File>Print menu?  When will it be fixed?

What app are you using to view PDF files? Preview can be a poor choice for some PDF files - I recommend using Adobe Reader - http://get.adobe.com/reader/ - perhaps it will solve your printing problem.

  • Email printed to PDF, PDF appears accurate in Acrobat XI Pro, when PDF printed to paper text missing

    HELP!!!
I have text disappear from Outlook emails printed to PDF when I print the PDF files from Acrobat XI Pro to a printer.
Here is a sample png from the PDF file printed out of Outlook - all the text is showing.
However when I print the PDF from Acrobat to a printer, the document comes out of the printer with text missing as shown:
The Acrobat print window shows all of the text that should be there as does Acrobat's view of the document.
Also, if I save the file to an image, all of the text is there.
I have tried different emails as well as different printers and the paper printed copies of the PDF emails are always missing text.
Additionally I have tried coverting the PDF file to a PDF/A file and printing that and the same problems occur.
Please send some tips as to how I can fix this!

    Hello Atul -
i am having similar printing issues with Acrobat 10.1.4.
in my case both PDFs made by me (from InDesign files) and other PDFs made elsewhere and sent to me are missing text when printed to paper -though they look fine both on-screen and in the preview pane, as Katy noted above.
these PDFs print fine when i open and print from an older version of Acrobat (9.5.2).
they will also print fine from 10.1.4 if i send them to another printer in the office, (a Dell Color Laser 3110cn), the printer i have a problem with is a Kyocera Mita KM-5053 - which leads me to believe that this is some kind of communication error between Adobe Acrobat Pro 10.1.4 and this printer, or perhaps a driver issue. ?
I don't believe it's merely a preferences/print settings problem as i've gone pretty carefully through all the dialog boxes that seem relevant and have had no luck in solving the problem. Also, the text that's missing seems arbitraty - meaning, it's not merely hyperlinks or certain layers or text in specific type faces that won't print -it's content in the same text box, where other text does print, and it's blacks and colors and various point sizes - in short there are no easily discernable unifying circumstances among the text that does not print.
obvioulsy an easy work around is to just print to the other printer or use the older version of Acrobat, but my concern is more that other people may be experiencing the same issues with PDFs i send them. so if it is a problem in the way i'm generating PDFs (although, as i said, text is also missing from PDFs i have received from other people and printed) i'd like to fix it quickly, so that people trying to print my PDFs don't end up with critical content missing.
i'm on a 2008 MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5, and using the Acrobat (X Pro v 10.1.4) that came with the CS6 Design & Web Premium package - although i'm looking at it online now and it's listed as Acrobat XI Pro..
any input you have would be much appreciated.
    thank you,
    bethany

  • PDF Size jumps when printing to Adobe PDF printer redirected vs. locally installed

I have a Server 2008 R2 setup to run Sage Peachtree as a RemoteApp.  RemoteApp is configured to pass local drives and printers through to the server for end user ease.  When you print an invoice (or any file from Peachtree) to the Adobe Acrobat
X "Adobe PDF" printer that has been redirected, a single page pdf will save at about 1.1mb.  If I print the exact same invoice to a local install of Adobe Acrobat X "Adobe PDF" printer on the Server 2008 R2 install, it will save to
about 8kb (which is the expected size for a single page pdf of lines and txt).
If you then try and print the 1.1mb pdf file to a normal HP printer PS (postscript) driver, it will expand in the print spooler several magnitudes to about 10-15mb, giving the impression that it sees the pdf data as an image instead of txt.
My guess is that the data being sent over the remote desktop connection to the redirected "Adobe PDF" printer is coming out of the pipe in a form that Adobe can only interpret as a graphic and thus compresses it as though it was one.
Anyone have any ideas on how to the local printer and the redirected printers to receive the same type of data and thus create pdf files of similiar size?

I suspected as much.  I was hopeful it was something like a setting that needed to be changed or a reg hack that needed a bit changed from 0 to 1 to make the printing work as expected.  I only installed the local printer to see if the RDP session
tunnel was in fact causing the print size to balloon so I will continue to instruct users to use that instead of the local redirected printer.  I am disappointed but not surprised.
    Edit:
Additionally I have tested the functionality of setting the GPO settings for Easy Print to use the redirected printer's drivers instead of the ones used by easy print, by setting “Computer
Configuration -> Administrative templates -Windows Components -> Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host -> Printer Redirection”.
    to “Disabled” but
with no luck.  In fact the printer received the proper Adobe PDF driver, but the job went out into print spool hell and was lost to the ether.  I have concluded that this approach will not bear any fruit.

  • PDF Printer Page Size Limitation

I have been creating documents in Microsoft Publisher 2007 & have been trying to convert them to PDF via the Acrobat PDF Maker. When I am dealing with 11x17 & Poster size (36"x48"), the PDFMaker gets into the Converting Process (60%) then displays the following option:
PDF Page Size in Adobe PDF printer is small causing pages to be split.
Press OK to convert without preserving transparency, bookmarks & links.
Press Cancel to choose a bigger sheet (at least 17.00 by 11.00 inches)
I hit cancel & have changed every Page Size option I can find including:
the Change Conversion Settings, in the Adobe PDF tab in Publisher
Conversion Settings: (Created custom setting with default page size)
Printers & Faxes in Control Panel
    Adobe PDF Printer
    Printing Preferences
Changed default settings & page size
I even changed the output paper 11x17
Yet, it never fails to try to convert everything into letter size. It seems as though it won't do anything over Letter size.
I have Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard & running Windows XP.
    PLEASE HELP!

WOW! I was amazed to see that within minutes of posting my initial thread, I tried something that works.
Apparently, the only way is will actually convert is if you select the regular Print option in the File tab. Then, change the Printer to Adobe PDF & the Paper Size to 11x17. It also worked for 36"x48" becuase I created a custom size named "Poster", so I changed the paper size to Poster & it worked!
I hope this helps someone. I searched for an existing forum on this issue off & on for MONTHS before creating this thread. If anyone has any suggestions why the Adobe PDF tab /PDF Maker wouldn't work, I'd like to know.

  • Adobe PDF printer  - Use VBA??

I am using Microsoft Access 2003 and have Acrobat 7 (Adobe PDF) and Acrobat 5 (Adobe PDF Writer) installed on my machine.   I can print to the Adobe PDF printer by using this code:
    Set Application.Printer = Application.Printers("Adobe PDF")
    DoCmd.OpenReport strReport, acViewNormal, , , acHidden
I am trying to figure out if there is a way to use an Acrobat object to set the path and document name without user intervention (which the code above requires as a dialog pops up requesting that information).
So, I am pretty good at figuring out how to use the various properties and methods of objects but I am just not sure WHICH objects I should be dealing with and I got lost in trying to read the SDK.
Can anyone provide at least a push in the right direction?
    Bob
P.S. If I posted this to the wrong forum or category, please do not just tell me that I did, but let me know where it should go.  I posted this originally to the wrong place and was told so, but I had to use a private message to the employee (who told me I had posted to the wrong place and locked the thread) in order to find out that THIS might be the proper location.

"Adobe no longer supports Acrobat 7 (let alone Acrobat 5!!!)"
Yeah, I know - I work for a large bank (contractor) and they move VERY SLOWLY with upgrades.

  • PDF printing with UTF8 characterset

    Hi,
    Stats:
    E-BIZ version :- 11.5.10.2
    DB:- 10.2.0.3
    Report BUilder :- 6i
    Character Set :- UTF8.
I have some doubt while viewing/printing pdf reports from Oralce Application. Can you please suggest if it is possible to print pdf's from oracle apps with UTF8 characterset and without having 3rd party software to convert pdf report to postscript and a printer that can understand postscript. We do have PASTA and IX configured in our enviornment.Reports created are in BI/XML publisher.
Actually we have one 3rd party tool for printing and wanted to get rid of it due to financial constraints. Can you please suggest if it is possible to print pdf's from oracle apps without having 3rd party tool. I have read lot of document and completely lost. Oracle some where says it is possible and at other place says 'If you are on UTF8 chacterset then you need to have XML/BI publisher with PASTA and 3rd party software' but in my enviornment we have some pdf reports that are bypassing 3rd party software for printing. I am just lost.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks,
    JD

    Hi,
This line confuses me, do i require 3rd party software to print from oracle apps if my characterset is UTF8(althoug i am using XML publisher), I believe yes -- See (Note: 422508.1 - About Oracle XML Publisher Release 5.6.3), Step 8 Enable PDF Printing in Oracle Applications. (System Administrator)
    Workaround section says
    6. From Oracle Applications via the Adobe Acrobat Reader, a PDF output file can be viewed and
printed.>>>> NO i not want to use it.This is a workaround to print PDF directly from the application. If you do not want to use this approach, use the other one mentioned above.
7.Although, it may be possible to create a custom print driver or print program using the Adobe
Acrobat Distiller, viable instructions on how to perform such a custom setup is very scarce, see
    Note 262657.1--intended for Latin 1 character set environments.>>>> I am on UTF8
I would not recommend this approach as this may (or may not) work.
    8. Use Pasta, an Oracle post printing program, to change a copy of the report output file to the
desired or printable output format.>>>>>> I have PASTA but does that mean i can print all my pdf reports using it. Don't i need 3rd party tool now.See (Note: 239196.1 - PASTA 3.0 Release Information).
    9. Lastly, use another format like Postscript, that is fully supported for viewing and printing>>>>> How to use it? Can anyone please explain.Change the output of the concurrent program to Postscript (Concurrent > Program > Define), and you can view the output using Ghost Viewer.

  • 3D PDF files in portfolio prints to Adobe PDF printer without content

3D PDF files in portfolio prints to Adobe PDF printer without content, but if printed from single 3D PDF file everything is fine. I need batch printing (this is the reason I use portfolio) of large amount of 3DPDF files because of the need to have proper preview of these files in browsers. • PDF Printing using BI Publisher

    Hello,
I'm using APEX 4.2 and trying to export some classic reports to PDF. I followed these directions to install BI Publisher:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/apex/application-express/configure-printing-093060.html
Entered these values in the Apex Aministration Report Settings section:

Print Server Host Address: http://TOSHIBAUSER-PC:9704/xmlpserver (also tried with localhost and failed)
    Print Server Port: 9704
    Print Server Script: /xmlpserver/convert
Back in my Classic Report, I configured these settings in the Print Attributes tab:
Response Header: Report Settings (also tried with Print Server and failed)
    Print URL: f?p=&APP_ID.:7:&SESSION.:FLOW_XMLP_OUTPUT_R7671716059006280
    I'm getting this error:

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I have never configured PDF printing this way and am pretty lost.
