Polaroid slide scanner SprintScan 35 Plus  problem

I recently purchased a Polaroid SprintScan 35+ slide scanner on eBay for my SCSI PM9600. All appears to be properly hooked up (scsi ID, termination, cables tight, software installed & working, scanner seen by Mac), yet it won't scan.
When either "preview scan" or "scan" buttons in the Polaroid software are clicked, the slide holder carriage moves just a bit down, a bit back up, makes a slight noise, moves a bit down, and then back up to resting position, and the following error message appears in an error window: "The scanner is not responding. Please check that it is powered on and properly connected. Error -17508"
Given that the scanner carriage moves down about 1/2 inch, but not all the way to complete the scan, clearly there is a response from the scanner.
Also, the scanner lamp does not light up at any point, although I don't know WHEN it is actually supposed to light up in the cycle of a scan. However, even if the lamp is burned out, I don't see why that should prevent the carriage from physically moving through a scan cycle.
The green and yellow indicator lights are both on and NOT blinking in preparation to scanning, which is what Polaroid says should be the case. The yellow light goes out while the abortive cycle occurs, and then comes back on continuously - no blinking to indicate anything is wrong.
I've tried both SCSI ports, two different SCSI cables, termination switch on as well as a terminator on the second port itself.
Anybody have any ideas of what's wrong or suggestions to try? Thanks.

I have the same scanner model that I have used to scan 100s of slides.
The first clue is the illumination light. On my unit it is illuminated as soon as the power is turned On. The lamp is a Philips TL4W/33X5F. There are two lamps. The primary is installed in the sockets. There is a spare lamp attached to the inside of the front cover. To remove the cover, pull up-out from the bottom.
On my unit, the carriage that holds the slide, moves downward over 1 inch during the scan process. It could be that when no illumination/data is detected, the SW aborts.
I believe you are connected properly. My SCSI cable is connected to the connector closest to the On/Off Switch; the Terminator switch is set to On; and the SCSI ID is set to 9. Since you are getting some scanner activity, this confirms that you are probably connected properly. Also, your green & yellow lights are functioning properly.
I would check the light failure. Hopefully, it's a burned out light & not a lamp circuit problem.
Did you download the unit's PDF User Manual? If not I can email it to you.
 Cheers, Tom

  • SCSI slide scanner

I have a Polaroid SprintScan slide scanner that was a wonderful tool for me before I switched to digital cameras.  Now I want to use the scanner to catalog old slides but I can't figure how to get this scsi device to work on current technology. I have seen ads for adapters that cost around $300 plus which seems excessive and I'm not even sure they'll do what I need, i.e. plug into a USB port.
I also have a PowerMac 8600/300 which has OS9 on it but no software for the SprintScan nor can I find it at Polaroid.
New scanners of this quality are thousands of dollars.
Anyone know of an easy way to hook up to my iMac USB port? Or do you perhaps have software for the SprintScan?
    Thanks
    Bill

Just about all old OS9-era SCSI peripherals I own (scanners, disks) can be connected to any of my Macs (even the latest OS X Macs) using this adapter:
    http://www.ratocsystems.com/english/products/FR1SX.html
I guess they're ramping down production, because I'm shocked to see it's over twice the price I paid a few years ago...
The great thing is, it doesn't need drivers. The Mac thinks whatever SCSI device is connected is simply a regular FireWire device. I can run scanners through VueScan software, which is always up to date. There is no need to worry about finding old manfacturers' software. It really just works. Putting a SCSI card in your Mac is a far flakier solution in comparison.
They also have a SCSI-USB adapter, but I have not tried it.

    Besides, it says it's discontinued.

  • Need film/slide scanner for PM 7600

I want a film/slide scanner to digitally capture the images from my zillions of slides and negatives. Cost, as usual, is a problem. I was thinking that rather than buying a low end 1800 DPI piece of crap to team with the G5, maybe I could get a good one (used/reconditioned) with SCSI and team it with one of my PM 7600s. Can anyone suggest a source for this, besides eBay?
    TIA
    Kathi

    Thanks everybody!
Jeff--yes, lucky me, I got my Christmas wish of a PowerMac G5. Just as the PPC chip was breathing its last, with the dual-core rendition (2.0 GHz). Turned out that my particular chip was bad, and it took more than a month of struggling with all kinds of crazy behavior to drill down to that. I was sure glad I had my 7600s during that time. And I still enjoy the original one, though its twin isn't getting much use now. I swapped the processors so that the one with the extra RAM and added storage now also has the faster (233 mHz) processor. I scored an old 17" AppleVision CRT from the office to run with the G5 so the 7600 could have its MultiSync 70 back, and I also got a very nice 15" or so Sony display from work that runs with the twin. Which means that at long last I put my two 13" Apple RGB displays out with the trash a few weeks ago. And I upgraded both 7600s to OS 9.1, which is as far as they'll go, I guess, without processor upgrades. That was really my main reason for wanting the G5--the OS X functionality, more than pure performance issues. There are too many things that don't work in Classic nowadays. Of course the G5 is much faster, but not so much faster that I want to scream every time I use the 7600. The three machines are happily networked via router.
I always forget about all the stuff that offices dump even though I've been a more-than-occasional beneficiary of the process. Thanks for reminding me. I'll have to ask our IT guy if he knows of any outlets around here. Scouring thrift shops is too big a mission for my overworked/lazy self at this point
Grant--thanks for the specs. I haven't looked at the current UMAX flatbed products because I already have a UMAX 1220S. I figured a slide attachment for it might turn up on eBay one day but I don't have the patience for that. It doesn't look as though any of their current slide/film holders would work with the 1220S, and even if they did still have something for my model, the resolution would be kind of low for 35mm anyway.
Jim--thanks for the warning!! I'm sorry you had such a hassle with that Nikon scanner.
Tom, your Polaroid scanner sounds great. I can't find any current Polaroid film scanners on their Web site, they only list Nikon and Microtek (all quite pricey). Maybe I can find a used one like yours. Or maybe I really don't need more than 1800 DPI and I should just buy the UMAX PowerLook 180... Probably will never do much printing with my old images, more likely just digital display, but I'm not positive about that, and I'd like to be able to throw out all those slides without sweating when the conversions are done.

  • PhotoShop Elements 10 doesn't recognize my slide scanner

I have a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual III for my 35mm slides.  The drivers are updated for Windows 7.  But PhotoShop Elements 10 does not see it let alone recognize it's existence.  My Paint Shop Pro Photo app. sees it and works with it.....as does my old, old Paint Shop Photo Album program.   But not my brand new PhotoShop Elements 10.  It sees and works with my HP All-in-one scanner/printer but not with the slide scanner.  What is the problem here?  Any suggestions?

Yes.  I had downloaded this info. back when I purchased my Win 7  64 bit desktop PC last year and used the updated driver because, of course, Minolta was no longer doing that.  I found these comments regarding the legacy TWAIN driver that is buried in PhotoShop Elements 10 but is not useable unless copied to another folder in the program files.  I performed this action and much to my pleasure.....it worked.  My PSE 10 now works perfectly with my Minolta slide scanner.  I discovered this after I submitted my question to the forum earlier this evening.  AND I really appreciate the answer which validates my actions.  I'm up and rolling again.  Thanks again.

  • Finally upgrading from 10.5 to 10.6; what should I do about drivers for photo printer and Nikon slide scanner?

Finally upgrading to 10.6 from 10.5.8. What do I need to do about drivers for my epson photo printer and nikon slide scanner? May be going all the way to 10.8.

I suggest you determine if compatible drivers are available either in the OS X drivers package or directly from the manufacturer. The following has a link for application compatibility. You can check this, too:
OS X- Printer and scanner software available for download
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The price is $29.00 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Are my applications compatible?

  • Slide scanner recommendations

To any who have experience with a slide scanner:
My father has years worth of slides from traveling and has selected out a few hundred that he would like to transfer to digital and keep on his Mac.
I am pretty well versed in Photoshop and Illustrator while learning to use Aperture but have no experience in scanning 35 mm slides to digital format.
Since I respect this community, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on a good photo or slide scanner that won't break the bank but will still provide excellent results (let's say less than $500, but preferably less than $300).
Or am I just sitting on a cloud and there really isn't anything on a high quality level that fits in that budget?
Note - I tend to be somewhat picky in my hardware (evidenced by my switching to a Mac platform and Apple hardware), thus I turn to you all.
Thanks for any input (or even ideas other than scanning at home).
I have a few errands to run, but will check back later for any responses.
    TIA -

I have scanned several thousand slides using a Nikon Coolscan V ED - sadly, I believe out of production. My first effort was with a Minolta ScanDual IV - nice machine with a slick four slide carrier, but the absence of infrared cleaning was a show stopper. Some thoughts:
-- Dedicated slide/film scanners produce much better results than flat bed adapters.
-- Vuescan is very nice software, much better and faster than NikonScan.
-- I have found no need for Photoshop; Aperture is more than enough, with, perhaps, the exception of really cracked emulsion skies, where layers may be needed to clean up.
-- Infrared cleaning is almost essential for older slides; often being better than actual physical cleaning.
-- It is amazing what you can clean up, but still, GIGO. If it is a poorly exposed, out of focus, thirty year old slide processed by a low cost lab, then digital scanning isn't going to help much.
-- I scan to TIFF (100+MB) because I don't want to scan again and because I want as much data to work with as possible. Newer, less damaged slides may be fine scanned to JPEG.
    My website has many examples.
    Best wishes!

  • IPhone 6 (plus) Problem Display Edges Chipping (breaking away) or broken from factory (underside) No warranty coverage by Apple!

ACHTUNG! iPhone 6 (plus) Problem: Chipped (broken) edges of display glass. Owner Beware! Apple denied warranty coverage.
    Can this be true?
Recently I found a little trace on the edge of my iPhone 6. Very small, at the bottom edge of the display glass.
You could hardly make it out, but visible enough to catch the eye.
Since my iPhone 6 has never dropped or bumped in any way, I addressed this issue to AppleCare support, and sent them the device.
The upshot: Diagnostics of the technician’s: broken glass! Warranty coverage: DENIED!
This damage comes from improper usage or is an accidental damage.
The AppleCare adviser also confirmed that this device also is not qualified for any further warranty claim, because of the broken display.  (See Appels warranty conditions).
Apple returned my phone unrepaired. The sim tray was missing, and a note in the return package said, that warranty repair was denied and that I can buy a new device at apple store.
For me it is OBVIOUSLY a PRODUCTION ERROR by the manufacturer, and has to be fixed for free within the warranty.
I made pictures of this problem so you can see what I mean.
I can only recommend to anyone urgently, to carry a 10x loupe (preferably illuminated) to the store, if you are going to buy an iphone 6 or 6 plus.
Otherwise, if you catch a device with chipped edges on the glass you are out of warranty.
Please notice that the complete bottom edge has marks of broken and chipped glass!
I think the whole construction with the round edges is the problem. The glass is simply too thin at the edges.
It could be more iPhones suffering the same problem.
Btw: The glass surface on top is perfectly intact. The broken pieces are on the bottom!
You can feel nothing if you do not take the display apart.
However, I set up a mail with my lawyer and am waiting how Apple will respond.
They are of course also invited to discuss on community portals worldwide about this.
Please let me know what you think and if someone had success with the same problem.

Hi. I have the same problem. Unpacked a new iPhone6 and the phone had a small chip under the glass on the edge. Local store says that this is not covered as it would have been incorrect use. Pretty strange as it came out of the box like this and the metal edge of the phone is perfect (which shows that it was not dropped), just the glass is chipped (looks as if the chip is inside of the glass). To me it looks like a production issue as the glass is curved and gets thinner towards the edges. Would be interested if more people have the same issue in order to put a claim forward to Apple.....

  • 35mm Slide Scanner Suggestions

Greetings All - I am looking for 35mm slide scanner recommendations in order to scan in ~1400 slides that have been in our family for many years that won't 'break the bank'. I'd rather have a piece of hardware that is dedicated for this task as opposed to a new scanner but all recommendations are helpful. When it is all complete I'll probably eBAY or otherwise dispose of the scanner in a similar manner.
    Thanks in advance.

Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED with Slide Feeder SF-210.
    http://nikon.ca/en/Product.aspx?m=16314
Not sure what you mean by "break the bank"... There are services out there that will scan your slides in bulk volume. Scanning 1400 slides is not an easy job since it is tedious. You can only fill this slide feeder with 50 slides at once, come back a few hours later, drop in another stack.

  • Nikon Coolscan  5000 slide scanner - not supported since 10.5.5

Shortly after buying my Mac Pro and installing 10.5.5 my Nikon Coolscan 5000 slide and film scanner won't scan and save files. Apple have said it's a Nikon problem and Nikon have no plan to produce an update. I was just told to buy SilverFast instead which may work, but will cost £400 first to buy.
Any other work arounds with Photoshop Elements or another program? I have a slide feeder which will take up to 50 slides at a time. Any software suggestions which will allow this. My PC is much slower than my Mac, so would save me hours of time doing it on my Mac
    Many thanks

    HI,
You posted in the Leopard forum but you installed 10.5.5 and your profile indicates you are running 10.6.2 That's a might confusing....
In any case, try reinstalling the drivers (sofware) that came with your scanner then repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Image Capture and Preview have trouble finding scanner. Photoshop no problem.

Image Capture and Preview have trouble finding the scanner wirelessly unless it is on when the Mac starts up. Photoshop finds the scanner no problem. Any suggestions for Image Capture or Preview?
The scanner is Canon MP620. Mac is MBP, running 10.8.2
I have done all the uninstall, reinstall, update drivers, etc. Please don't bother suggesting that stuff.
    Thanks.

As for the scanner - so is this new one wireless? When I hooked up my Epson All-in-One, I had to install it via USB first before I could install the wireless (per their instructions).  With Snow Leopard, I simply installed the driver and it covered and recognized both the print and scan function - not so in Lion; I had to go through hoops with the scanner part and it finally showed up as a separate unit. I thought that is silly, but - as long as it works.....  I'm trying to think of possibilities since I'm about out of ideas, so you might want to consider that (if it applies). The other troubleshooting suggestions usually include redoing the "add" function after a reboot.
As for Image Capture, I am out of ideas. FWIW, I never use it - in my workflow, there is no need for it. Not sure if this would have an impact, but make sure that you choose Image Capture in the CDs&DVDs Preference Pane (mine is set to ignore or ask purposely):
If that does not work, I'd suggest reinstalling the OS over the top of what you have.

  • Zen V Plus - Problem with installing MediaExplorer, MediaSource e

Hi, this's my first thread on this forum and I hope the last. 2 days ago i bought mp3 player called Creative Zen V Plus 2 GB. It's refurbished and that's why i have no guide book. Anyway I think there won't be an answer for my problem there. It's more important that I have original CD with all software - even if it is not running unfortunately (probably due to my computer).
Well, I would like to transfer songs to my Zen but the only way I can do it, is to open Zen's folder in MyComputer and copy files there. Then I can listen them using player without any problem. The problem is that I can't use any of Creative programmes like MediaExplorer, MediaSource, so I can't even make playlists or converting video files. I just can't install them on to my computer. When I try to install any of software few errors appear:
"Installation is unable to continue because of one or more unresolved issues.
    Please contact suppot services.
[I] - Registry value StartMSu under Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce cannot be created.
[I] - Registry value CMSRegOu under Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce cannot be created.
Creative MediaSource 5 installation is unable to continue because of one ore more unresolved issues.
Registry value SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce , CTAutoUpdate cannot be created."
After this, the installation window closes and the computer asks me to connect my device. When I try, an error appears and the application closes.
I don't know what to do to install those programmes successfully. They would give me benefits and many possibilities to use my player in a better way.
I hope that some will help me.
PS. I've tried to install programmes from the original CD and from creative.com. Same results, so I think the problem is with my computer. Do anybody know what's going wrong Device Manager sees my player so it's connected for sure. Btw sorry for my english. I'm polish and I'm still learning
    Thanks for posts, anyway.

In WMP the Now Playing or the Library window on the right drag what you want to that & side the small tab in that window (now playing) click on the tab to Save as playlist (give it a name) on the library side(if using that pane)same thing except it will say untitled give it a name. In the sync tab you can do the same or on the left side at the top it says playlist you can click on the playlist name (if you've named them) & connect device to sync.Message Edited by coachop94 on 0-25-2008 2:3 PM

  • BT NetProtect Plus Problems

Just wondering if anyone has had problems with bt netprotect plus and found any solutions. I was a customer of McAfee for some years, I upgraded to BT Broadband Option 2 with bt netprotect plus provided by McAfee included, my original McAfee software was about to expire and I had followed the link to bt netprotect plus which appeared to download and install, during installation messages appeared telling me old files were being removed and updated, however, on the day my old McAfee expired a message appeared requesting payment to extend subscription, I contacted McAfee to inform them I was now with bt netprotect plus, I sign in under a different password to bt netprotect, however, it always defaults to my old account which is now expired with no software available, I contacted bt customer help, I was transferred to bt technical help who remotely took over 2 desktop computers in my home both have Window 7, the technician informed me bt netprotect plus was incompatible with windows 7, I did question so why are you installing software onto my computer which is incompatible, following the remote installation of bt netprotect plus, I tried to restart both computers to find I was unable to boot up both, the internal fans are running fast and loud, the DVD RW & DVD ROM drive light up, then that's it, the hardrive indicator light remain on, there is no signal to the pc monitor or any other devices (keyboard or mouse) I contacted bt for help, well they can't help me as I have nothing on my screen, I ask for help again today, it can't be the software, we're really sorry but can't offer any help, it is frustrating to have so much conflicting advice, customer service were helpful and understanding and gave me a number to contact bt technical help with the advice of asking for a supervisor, however, they are unable to offer any explanation as to why following remote access to my computers, and changing the system settings, I now have 2 computers that are now useless, the parting advice was to go to computer shop to have them repaired at my expense, the only computer working is my laptop, which was the first pc I was able to download bt netprotect plus to and is working okay, but I'm fearful that it will die to and I'll be left in the dark. I would be grateful if any other bt customers have had similar problems and found any solutions, I can't afford to right off hundreds of pounds worth of equipment, I wished I had never changed to option 2 and kept things as they were, I have never had any problems with BT, McAfee or my desktops prior to this incident.  Thanks

    Hi Stuart,
Thanks for the e-mail. I am really sorry for the problems that you have had, quite a frustrating issue I fully appreciate.
I can see that there is an open complaint on your account in which a team is actively dealing with this case. As far as I can see the last note on the complaint is that you have agreed to bring the PC in question to a Vendor to have it checked. Is that correct?
I really don't think that this issue could have been caused by the action of the advisor who took remote access control of your PC. The actions the advisor took where all at software level but the problems that you describe indicate that the power was off on the PC and monitor when you returned. I am not aware of any changes anyone could make via your operating system that would cause you to lose power to the PC components.
As I say there is a team already dealing with this issue so there is not much we can do in the mean time as too many departments dealing with this could prove very confusing. I would however be very interested to learn of the outcome of this case.. If there is anything else that I can help you with please drop me a reply.
    REPLY
Thank you for your reply, both desktop PC's had power, but were unable to boot up with no signals to peripheral devices (monitor, keyboard, mouse) if the problem was purely software, I can't understand why BT technical help did not ask the customer to download from McAfee site software removal tool before attempting to install BT NetProtect Plus, especially if the customer had been a previous customer of McAfee, maybe wise after the event, on the day the technician took control of my desktops, it was evident that system files were being accessed and deleted and following this both computers failed to restart as unable to boot up. I asked a local computer technician to look at both PC's and one is now up and running again with BT NetProtect Plus installed and working, the other desktop continues to fail to boot up, however, the technician accessed the hardrive to allow me to rescue files.
I have again spoke with BT technical help, I could accept if only one PC failed to boot, but both following intervention from BT technical help remote access is more than just coincidence, but I now understand, BT accepts no responsibility nor offers any solution, compensation for the loss of hundreds of pounds worth of equipment, a warning should be issued to customers that intervention made by BT technical help remote access may result in loss of functioning PC. The only advice available from BT is to continue presenting the non functioning destop to to a PC vendor for repair at my cost, like I said in previous e-mails I would rather replace the desktop as continual repair costs would exceed the cost of a replacement desktop and would resolve the problem at my cost and prevent any further frustration dealing with BT, happy to close the complaint now as unresolved.

  • Discoverer Plus - Problem with Page Orientation when printing pdf's

    Hi,
When printing pdf's in Disco Plus I have a problem:
My workbooks are a mixture of landscape and portrait pages.
I am printing the entire workbook and then using cutepdf to produce a pdf.
If I print to paper I get the correct landscape/portrait settings.
If I print to pdf then landscape pages appear vertically when I view on screen so that the text is running from bottom to top of the page.
So it is picking up th portrait/landscape settings from the individual worksheets but cutepdf has not realised that the pages are landscape so they appear on the screen vertically.
This was not a problem on discoverer desktop so I am confident that this is not a problem with cutepdf.
    Any thoughts?
    Justin

    Thanks 2257648922,
    Version details are as follows:

  • I HAVE MANY OLD SLIDES FROM MY FAMILY,WHAT IS A GOOD 35MM SLIDE  SCANNER  THAT CAN BE USE WITH MY MACBOOK PRO?

    Hi,
Can anyone recommend a scanner or other device for old family slides that must converted in a digital format  and saved in a DVD and external hard drive?
    Thanks
    Wandafromqc

Don't even think about scanning thousands of slides yourself. If you have 5000 family slides, it's overwhelmingly likely that just 500 of them will give a highly effective representation of the whole collection, and will include not only all of the best ones but many of the second-best ones too. Scanning them all, or even half of them, will consume your entire summer and would probably give you and your sibs a lot more pictures than any of you really wants to keep.
It used to be true that scanning slides halfway decently required an expensive dedicated film scanner -- consumer flatbed scanners just weren't up to the task. That's no longer true. I have an under-$200 Epson Perfection V500 Photo flatbed scanner that outperforms the $2000+ Nikon film scanner I've had for 9 years in slide and negative scanning, and the software that came with it enables me to scan several (6 if I remember right) slides at once and automatically saves them as separate image files. That makes it much faster to use than the film scanner, and of course I can also use it for scanning flat reflective material, such as the more than 1000 old photographic prints and post cards I've digitized for my local historical society. The film scanner couldn't have done any of that.
