Poor (or no) signal on Orange UK

OK, I've had my 3GS for 2 days now and am seriously thinking of sending it back unless I can find a solution to my signal strength problem.
In my house, I am getting 0 or 1 bar signal in about 10% of the building. Most of the time I just get 'no service'.
Sometimes I get 2 bars, and if I stand in the one spot, the signal gradually disappears going form 2 to 1 to 0 to 'no service' then after a while, it might come back.
I also have a 'nornal' GSM Orange Samsung (my son's phone) and get between 2 and 5 bars throughout the house.
Could I have a faulty phone?
Is this a common problem?
Would an external aerial/repeater solve this?
Thanks.

Welcome Orange customers to the age old problem of reception issues with the iPhone. We have had the same problem on O2 and, it seems on AT&T in the USA. I'm on my second iPhone, recently upgrading from the 2nd Generation model to the 3Gs, hoping the new model would be better as far as signal is concerned- it isn't. I was about to switch to Orange, but I see the problem is there too- poor signal, drop outs, the odd cut off. It seems to be an Apple issue.
I still have the old iPhone for now, so I'm taking both off to a nearby Apple store to have them tested. This might show an issue with the particular phones I have (a coincidence if it is), but it might show a larger, more concerning issue.
If one must have an iPhone, then there would seem to be a need to install a signal booster at your home/work in order to get the thing to work properly. Not really what this is all about though, is it?

Yes, though it is less ideal than what I suggested earlier. You would need to place your AirPort Express in a location approximately midway between your AirPort Extreme Base Station and the TV. Then, using AirPort Utility, configure it to "extend a wireless network".
It may help. Bear in mind the signal thus "extended" by the Express can only be as good as the signal it can receive from the Extreme. That is the reason for selecting its appoximate midway location.
    Read about it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145
Scroll down to "Wirelessly Extended Network (802.11n)" for a picture.
This solution requires an all-Apple wireless network. No third party stuff.
You mentioned using Ethernet. That would be a better idea. Scroll down to "Roaming Network (Ethernet-connected Wi-Fi base stations)" for a picture. In your case, the longer the Ethernet cable - hence the closer you can move the Express to the TV - the better

  • Iphone 5s poor reception of signal

I am facing a lot of issue with connectivity of my iphone 5s.. I still use my 4s and when both phones are placed side by side.. the 4s has complete dots(signals) where as the 5s does show only 1 or 2 dots.. I have taken 5s to apple service center and got it replaced..so I have my new 5s now.. but again its the same problem.. very poor signals and dropped calls..i am using the most updated version of software 8.1 and also I am not using any case.
I have taken a new sim from my service provider just to rule out any issue with sim.. but still its same.. my battery is just draining and when checked the "battery usage" phone -low signal shows like 20%..
I am thinking to move back to android... as all other users in my home does not have any connectivity issues and its from the same service provider...
Any suggestions help is greatly appreciated.

  • \poor Wi Fi signal - Thick Walls

I live in an old house with very thick walls. Consequently the wi fi signal is very poor from room to room. For my PC I have a Belkin product which sends the wi fi signal through our electric wiring system. Is there something similar that I could connect my ipad to.

How does wifi use the wires? I think you need to better describe your setup. Wifi means "wireless" so if you have something that is using your electrical system wires I think it is a wired ethernet system using your wires, not wifi.
So if you have a wifi device connected to a wired ethernet over your electrical system and you computer connects to the device using wifi, your ipad should be able to connect using wifi to the same device.
It would help if you told us the model of the device. "...a Belkin product..." is not enough information for us to know how your network is setup.

  • Poor cell phone signal

Is there a cell phone booster for an area with a poor signal.  An external dish, antenna?

Thanks Lawrence.  We use CommonTime mSuite to integrate our Lotus Notes with iPhone's Calendar, Contacts and email using the Exchange iPhone connector, and I am one of the administrators for mSuite.  I have deleted and re-added the Exchange account on my 5s running IOS 8 multiple times, and have done the same on an iPad Gen 3 and an iPad Mini.  All with the same results.  (The results are that email comes down, but calendar and contacts do not, and email will reload every so often.)  I've deleted the account on the mNotes server a couple of times as well, to no avail.  I have an old iPhone 4 still running IOS 7.1.2, and setting the exchange account up on it, immediately everything came down successfully from Lotus Notes onto the old iPhone.  This is definitely an IOS 8/CommonTime issue, and CommonTime has acknowledged that there is a problem, though they have as yet no fix.  The one good thing to come of this is I now know what was killing my battery. After 7 hours of use last night (regular use on Facebook and Feedly) my battery had only gone down to 83%. Other of our 46 users who have upgraded to IOS 8 have the same problem as I.

  • Poor or NO SignaL?

    HEllo All~
I live in what I call a "geographical oddity" meaning that most cell phone carriers have very weak signals here. Which for the most part makes it unable for me to make a call from the house. But with At&T I do get the occasional 2-3 bars especially when I have it in this one spot on my house.
Anyhow~ I had a motorola Slvr L7 before and now that I've got the Iphone I dont get any signal at all! Not even in the spot where I normally used to get a couple bars. I remember it was always enough to text out and in...but now nothing!
I just went to the store, and normally I get FULL bars there and I got NONE. And this is a spot where I was always able to call.
Is anyone else having this problem? I am just curious to see if this phone gets a weaker signal strength??
    Thanks all~
    Annie

    Hello Annie.
If your iPhone had full reception at this store in the past but doesn't now, it sounds like something may be wrong with your iPhone's SIM card or the iPhone itself.
I suggest calling AT&T first to determine if they are having any cell tower or network problems in your area and if not, give AppleCare a call - (800) 694-7466 - obviously not with your iPhone.

  • Poor or no signal after iOS 5 upgrade

I just upgraded to the new OS 5 and now I either have no signal and get "could not activate cellular signal" or it takes forever to download a small text email.  I cannot make phone calls from the place I sit every day.  The phone worked perfectly for the last year.  Right up until this moment when I did the upgrade.  I've rebooted several times and I've gone over all my settings to make sure it's ok.  Please help.  Thank you.

About 2 days ago the handset speaker just started working and has done so ever since, so not sure if its just a glitch that Apple will sort out in a further update!

  • Poor BB wireless signal reception - I want to move...

I want to move the HH3(infinity) router et al to another place in the house as connection to other wireless enabled kit is dropping out or weak in some parts of the house. Our previous hub only needed the telephone connection with a splitter in place whereas now we need a dsl connection only. I treid fitting a splitter but the BB signal dropped out.
Will I need a dsl connection elsewhere in the house to move the HH3 hub now? Or alternatively, can anyone recommend a broadband signal booster?

  • E2500 - Poor range/Weak signal

I never comment on products I buy on Amazon, but this product is not worth a dollar or a minute of your time. While it is extremely easy to set up, it provides the worst service of any router I've ever had in that it ONLY provides signal within 10 feet of the router...and a very spotty signal at that. I have a 50 mbps speed plan and it only provides 3-10 mbps speed when it works, not counting the times that it mysteriously fails and I have to reset it. I have installed all the firmware updates on this product and had 2 lengthy conversations with customer support and the best they could do for me was to offer a newer router, but the same model. Do not buy this router or another cisco product if you can help it. Surely their brand is NOT synonymous with quality, and I feel bad that their customer support team has to respond to all the issues incurred by using these shoddy products.

Once you did the firmware update on the router.. You need to reset the router for 30 sec and then reconfigure the router again..

  • Poor to Nill Signal in Home

My basic phone is practically useless inside my home. What options are there besides going outside to make and answer phone calls?

Purchase a network extender and connect it to your broadband Internet connection.

  • Carrier signal is poor in iOS7

After installing iOS7, my iP5 has a very poor/variable carrier signal strength. iP5 is on EE in the UK. Has anyone else got this problem?

    Hi John,
This has been really frustrating for many of us Apple lovers.  Almost everyone in my family owns two or more Apple products, until this mess.
My daughter was due for a new phone and then IOS 7 made hers useless, to the point where she is able to make calls on a rare occasion because it constantly goes into searching mode.  So as of yesterday she went to the other side and bought an android phone and loves it.  My son now because of his IOS 7 issues, is asking for an Android and my wife is unable to use her IPad half the time due to searching while on cell or dropping Wi Fi every 30 seconds, is now asking for a Windows Tablet.
Their point, and a valid one, is if I have a device that I purchased to do a specific task, such as make and receive calls and it won't do that, it is useless and why pay for it.
Apple is losing long time customers because they have taken once valuable tools and toys and created high priced paper weights of them.  I use my IPad for business and must say that with it being unreliable now, I am also looking at the windows tablet so that I can do my job.
Apple, please address this soon or at a minimum, acknowledge the issue

  • TS1398 Very weak WIFI on my new iPad MD511LL. Tried Apple suggestion, but they didn't work. Signal is variable from zero to two - never shows three 'bars' even on stronger wifi system. Could this unit be defective?

Just bought it last week. Have synced it with my main computer. It gets WIFI most of the time, but the signal never goes above two bars (curves) even when I'm in a strong WIFI area. Rest of the time it varies between zero bars (no service) to two bars - slow, slow, slow.
Already did the recommended shutdown and the WIFI on and off suggestions made by Apple. Already compared to other equipment, which receive a solid, strong three bars at all the same locations. Since this is the WIFI only model, quite alarmed at the problem. I need the WIFI to be able to pick up the signals better.
Could this be an antenna problem?? Behaves this way even when not in any case.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • BT Vision box signal strength indicator

Just received the latest black BT Vision box replacing an older version. Old version worked really well, good picture. New one using same leads and aerial point pixellates at times horribly. The signal quality indicator usually indicates 100% and is green in colour. The signal strength indicator varies: sometimes is shows over 70dBuV and is red, other times it is around 64dBuV and is orange and occasionally it is around 56dBuV an is green. What should it be? It pixellates even when the indicator is green. I had a big new roof aerial fitted a few years ago  and there is a booster/distributor box in the roof - currently running just two tv's off it, although rarely at the same time.
Why does the new box not work when the old one did? What do I need to do to cure this? Is the signal too strong or too weak?! Any ideas out there?
    Thanks, Graham

Thanks for the feedback. I have tried splitting the aerial with a passive splitter - perhaps marginally better but difficult to say. Even tried splitting again to the point where the signal was showing weak. The strength indicator seems to have a colour coding, starting off red with a weak signal, going orange, then green, then as the signal is stronger it goes orange again and back to red when too strong. I have hit the green optimum region and gone either side of it. Pixellation is always there. Reading all the posts on here about this, I am coming to the conclusion that I am not going to be able to fix this.
I may ask BT to reinstate the old box, it worked perfectly - I only asked for a replacement so that I can have BT Sports and the option of Sky sports. I will just have to stream BT sport to my laptop if I want it. I am a little disappointed about this though.
