Poor performance on Discoverer after upgrade to 11g database

Hello,
We have two customers who have experienced a sharp decline in the time it takes to run their queries when they have upgraded to an 11g database.
One was a full Disco upgrade from 4 to 10 plus the database upgrade.
The other was purely a database upgrade - Discoverer version was already 10g.
They were both on 9i database.
They are both Oracle Apps - and the reports are based on a mixture of everything from standard tables to custom tables - there is no pattern (or one that we have seen) in the poorly performing reports.
I have not seen much on metalink regarding this - has anyone else come across why this would be?
It does seem to be only Discoverer - standard reports and the app are performing as expected.
Any advice welcome,
Thanks
Rachael

Hi Rachael
There are additional database privileges needed for running in 10g and 11g databases that weren't needed in 9i. Here's the typical privileges that I use:
accept username prompt'Enter Username: '
accept pword prompt'Enter Password: '
create user &username identified by &pword;
grant connect, resource to &username;
grant analyze any to &username;
grant create procedure, create sequence to &username;
grant create session, create table, create view to &username;
grant execute any procedure to &username;
grant global query rewrite to &username;
grant create any materialized view to &username;
grant drop any materialized view to &username;
grant alter any materialized view to &username;
grant select any table, unlimited tablespace to &username;
grant execute on sys.dbms_job to &username;
grant select on sys.v_$parameter to &username;
I appreciate that all of the above are not needed for all users and some are only needed if the user is going to be scheduling.
However, I do know that sys.v_$parameter was not needed in 9i. Can you check whether you have this assigned?
I know this might sound silly too, but you need to refresh your database statistics in order for Discoverer to work well. You might also want to try turning off the query predictor if it is still enabled.
Best wishes
Michael

  • Problem in de-queuing xml messages after upgrade to 11g database

    We just upgraded from database 10g to 11g. After upgrade we are facing a problem in processing xml messages smaller than 4000 bytes. Messages larger than 4K bytes are handled correctly.
    We have Tibco IM/BW adaptors accessing Oracle AQ through JDBC Thin from other platforms than the DB is on.
    These clients connect to the database with an application user (XXIO) which belongs to the APPS schema.
    The client makes an enqueue to the queue-table XXIO_I00_I_JMS_Q_TABLE and in USER_DATA-part of the message the client specifies some header-information for the message with the actual data.
    The enqueue is made with JDBC Thin 11.1.0.7 and with the aqapi.jar/jmscommon.jar-files from the rdbms 11.1.0.7-installation, so the API towards the database is of the correct version.
    When the enqueue is done, the message has correctly been put into the table XXIO_I00_RT_I_JMS_Q_TABLE.
    Now to the problem,
    For example, we have a message that just has been put into the table, and it has a text_len of 3887.
    The text-part of the message is put in text_lob, not in text_vc.
    The problem now is that when the propagation starts
    (execute DBMS_AQADM.ENABLE_PROPAGATION_SCHEDULE(queue_name => 'XXIO.XXIO_I00_RT_I_JMS_Q'),
    the code for dequeue and move of the message, assumes that the text is in text_vc when text_len <= 4000 bytes.
    Since that's not the case, the message propably gets errored out, and is put in the errorqueue.
    The length of the messages that are put into text_lob vary from 2000 and up, so text_vc seems to be used only
    for messages below 2000 bytes now. This problem occurred when we upgraded the DB and client API to 11.1.0.7.
    Any pointer will be helpful.
    Thanks

  • Apple maps has received a poor performance rating just after introduction of the iPhone 5. I am running google maps app on the phone. Siri cannot seem to get me to a specific address. Where does the problem lie? Thanks.

    Apple maps has received a poor performance rating just after introduction of the iPhone 5. I am running Google Maps app on the phone. SIRI cannot seem to get me to a specific address. Where does the problem lie? Also can anyone tell me the hierarchy of use between the Apple Maps, SIRI, and Google maps when the app is on the phone? How do you choose one over the other as the default map usage? Or better still how do you suppress SIRI from using the Apple maps app when requesting a "go to"?
    I have placed an address location into the CONTACTS list and when I ask SIRI to "take me there" it found a TOTALLY different location in the metro area with the same street name. I have included the address, the quadrant, (NE) and the ZIP code into the CONTACTS list. As it turns out, no amount of canceling the trip or relocating the address in the CONTACTS list line would prevent SIRI from taking me to this bogus location. FINALLY I typed in Northeast for NE in the CONTACTS list (NE being the accepted method of defining the USPS location quadrant) , canceled the current map route and it finally found the correct address. This problem would normally not demand such a response from me to have it fixed but the address is one of a hospital in the center of town and this hospital HAS a branch location in a similar part of town (NOT the original address SIRI was trying to take me to). This screw up could be dangerous if not catastrophic to someone who was looking for a hospital location fast and did not know of these two similar locations. After all the whole POINT of directions is not just whimsical pasttime or convenience. In a pinch people need to rely on this function. OR, are my expectations set too high?
    How does the iPhone select between one app or the other (Apple Maps or Gppgle Maps) as it relates to SIRI finding and showing a map route?
    Why does SIRI return an address that is NOT the correct address nor is the returned location in the requested ZIP code?
    Is there a known bug in the CONTACTS list that demands the USPS quadrant ID be spelled out, as opposed to abreviated, to permit SIRI to do its routing?
    Thanks for any clarification on these matters.

    siri will only use apple maps, this cannot be changed. you could try google voice in the google app.

  • HSODBC not working after upgrade to 11G

    Hi,
    I am having trouble with dblinks that worked under 10G but no longer work after upgrading to 11G. For this installation I am running Oracle on Windows 32 bit
    and am using a Sybase ODBC driver to connect to a Sybase database.
    I did catch the fact that hsodbc has been replaced by dg4odbc and have changed my listener configuration accordingly. However, when I try to use the dblinks I am receiving ORA-28500 errors "Incorrect syntax near 'FROM'"
    Any idea on what the problem might be or how to troubleshoot?
    Thanks!

    This kind of problem is commonly related to the QUOTED IDENTIFIER option within the ODBC driver
    - Open ODBC Admin and step throug the config; you'll find an option:
    EnableQuotedIdentifiers make sure this option is checked.
    -Also make sure you have set in your init<dg4odbc>.ora file the parameter: HS_FDS_SUPPORT_STATISTICS=FALSE

  • Is it possible to perform network data encryption between Oracle 11g databases without the advance security option?

    Is it possible to perform network data encryption between Oracle 11g databases without the advance security option?
    We are not licensed for the Oracle Advanced Security Option and I have been tasked to use Oracle Network Data Encryption in order to encryption network traffic between Oracle instances that reside on remote servers. From what I have read and my prior understanding this is not possible without ASO. Can someone confirm or disprove my research, thanks.

    Hi, Srini Chavali-Oracle
    As for http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/options/advanced-security/advanced-security-ds-12c-1898873.pdf?ssSourceSiteId… ASO is mentioned as TDE and Redacting Sensitive Data to Display. Network encryption is excluded.
    As for Network Encryption - Oracle FAQ (of course this is not Oracle official) "Since June 2013, Net Encryption is now licensed with Oracle Enterprise Edition and doesn't require Oracle Advanced Security Option." Could you clarify this? Thanks.

  • Admin Applet could not start after upgrade to 11g

    I recently performed an in-place upgrade of UCM 10g to 11g following the UCM Upgrade documentation.
    After the upgrade, the Admin Applet could not run using the browser.
    I have tried on both IE8 and FireFox.
    Let's use Repository Manager as an example.
    I click on the icon in the Admin Applet page in the browser, an error message pop-up:
    apUnableToStartApplication(RepoMan) apFailedToInitialize syFileUtilsFileNotFound((null))
    I tried to trace the error using the Server Output with the option "applet", but have no luck.
    Using the option "applet", the Server Output is blank.
    In the Java Console, I have the following error message:

    Could someone help, please?

    Highly odd.

    That bit of code logic looks for only either a 403 or a 404 response code (403 being "forbidden" and 404 being "page not found"). The system is explicitly getting a 404 error passed to it, but the download test you just did shows that the file exists, and can be downloaded.
    I have to wonder if the jar is messed up. My file size is 3.16 MB (3,318,627 bytes) for 11g. Yours close to that?
    Also, try dumping your Java temp cache on your local machine. This is not the same as your temporary internet files. You have to go into the Java console control in Windows Control Panel to do it.

  • Invalid data from serveral fact logical table sources after upgrade to 11g

    Hi,
    We have a situation after upgrade from 10g to 11g. Answers' querys works fine in 10g environment, but in 11g, generated SQL is not correct.
    Our example is something like that: we have orders fact table, customers and time dimensions. Customer have an hierarchy like: Customer Total -> Customer Country -> Customer Region -> Customer Detail (each level in one different physical table).
    Order's logical table source has two table sources. One sets to Customer Country level, second one Customer Region level, both with different WHERE clauses in Content tab inside LTS configuration. Both at same level of Time dimension.
    The issue is that, at dimension level, SQL is getting correct table to resolve Customer data (Customer Region level), but then, is getting the WHERE clause sets in LTS set to Customer Country level, so we are getting error data. Priority is the same to both LTS at fact table, sets to 0 (default).
    How to know the way Oracle BI Server takes one LTS instead of another one? It's supposed to take the LTS defined at the same granularity level... but is not correct this case.
    Thanks.

    Can you try one of these options:
    Try to set the priority group of lowest granular dimension to 1
    or disable the LTS that is getting the where clause and check if it works fine and then enable again.

  • Group by query not working after upgrade to 11g

    Hi again,
    This once is weired.
    I had a report base on a seeded view with following query in Install Base.
    SELECT
    DESCRIPTION item_description,
    OWNER_PARTY_ID,
    sum(quantity)
    FROM CSI_INSTANCE_SEARCH_V
    WHERE 1=1
    AND serial_number is not null
    AND OWNER_PARTY_SOURCE_TABLE = 'HZ_PARTIES'
    AND NOT (INSTANCE_STATUS_ID = 1)
    AND NVL (ACTIVE_END_DATE, SYSDATE + 1) > SYSDATE
    group by OWNER_PARTY_ID
    This report was working fine in 10g and stopped pulling records after upgrade.
    We are on 11.5.10.2 and 11g.
    Does the upgrade changes EBZ views?
    I had to rewrite it using base tables and it worked again with the group by clause.
    I have verified there are no invalid objects.

    Hussein,
    This turned out to be a bug in 11.2.0.1
    As per Oracle SR

  • Best way to avoid requirement for network ACL after upgrade to 11g

    Hi All,
    After upgrade from 10g to 11g, I found Network ACLs required to make code using SYS.UTL_SMTP to work. Otherwise there is an error: ORA-24247: network access denied by access control list (ACL).
    Do you know an elegant way to get rid of ACLs? I mean to open the network for all user's code, like it was on 10g, instead of checking what is actually needing it and doing specific ACLs for users. Database parameter disabling ACL restrictions seems natural option here, but it looks like Oracle not introduced such.
    Kind Regards,
    Artzaw

    I don't know of a way to disable ACLs, no.  I'd imagine that there probably is a hidden parameter that Oracle Support could direct you to.  I'm hard-pressed to imagine why you'd really want to disable that functionality, though.
    You can create an ACL that allows access to an arbitrary host on an arbitrary port (host => '*.*.*.*' and with NULL lower_port and upper_port values).

  • Problem with statement after upgrading to 11g

    Hello,
    We recently upgraded to 11g from 9i and one of our statements we routinely use no longer works. The statement is:
    delete from ALLEMPLOYEES x where exists( (select * from ALLEMPLOYEES where email_id=x.email_id) minus (select * from X_ALLEMPLOYEES where email_id=x.email_id));
    This statement deletes no rows from the ALLEMPLOYEES table. When we run this statement as a check:
    (select * from ALLEMPLOYEES) MINUS (select * from X_ALLEMPLOYEES);
    We find many rows produced. Why would the delete fail now? We have colleagues still using 9i and use this same delete statement and it works for them with no trouble.

    Do you have proper indexes?

  • Bad performance on CF9 after upgrade from CF8

    Hello and happy new year for everybody
    I'm stuck with a problem after upgrade from CF8 entreprise to CF9 entreprise.
    We are using IIS6 on WIN2003R2 (SP2).
    There are a lot of  "503 Server Error" with no content. (about 0.05% of request). This can be occured on big or small CFM, graphic ressources, etc...

    There is no line about a memory issue!
    These errors happening on random request not ALL!! (arround 0.05%), and there is no real link between load and this... Our applications handle a lot of POST download, but like I've described before, error can occured on classic cfm page and static ressource...
    What I mean with upgrade CF8 to CF9, is with our 10 other servers running on CF8, I've never see that 503 issue outside a real jrun problem (like a memory crash, restart, etc...)
    @Carl:
    Server is running on WIN2003R2SP2 32 bits OS (dual Xeon E5506, 4Go RAM). Here is the jvm.config arguments:
    # Arguments to VM
    java.args=-server  -Xms1024m -Xmx1024m -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -XX:PermSize=256m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m -XX:+UseParallelGC -Dcoldfusion.rootDir={application.home}/../ -Dcoldfusion.libPath={application.home}/../lib -Dcoldfusion.classPath={application.home}/../lib/updates,{application.home}/../lib,{appli cation.home}/../gateway/lib/,{application.home}/../wwwroot/WEB-INF/flex/jars,{application. home}/../wwwroot/WEB-INF/cfform/jars
    Do you know if it should be possible to try old JRun connector used by CF8 ?

  • ARM approval error after upgrading to SP14: Database error while using the secure store.

    Dear GRC experts,
    After upgrading GRC 10 to SP14, assigning manual passwords during the approval of a request, the approval process is failing.
    Here is the scenario; your advice will be appreciated.
    Task: Manually assign passwords to multiple systems contained in the request
    Where: On the access request, go to “User System Details” tab
    Issue: After approving/submitting the request, the error “Database error while using the secure store” is generated
    Logs: Nothing on transactions SLG1 or ST22; however ST11 shows the error attached below:
    This is the failed approval of the request:
    Other scenarios executed as a workaround, and passed the password assignment this time:
    The approval will work if only one password is assigned to any of the given systems. The rest of the systems get an auto-generated
    password.
    ARM also accepts multiple passwords when the requestor assigns passwords on the “User System Details” prior submitting a
    request. The GRC admin can approve once reached for system approval.
    AS FYI, “Confirm Password” is only required when creating the request but not on any other stage.
    System information:
      -Netweaver 7
      -GRCFND_A SP14
      -GRCPINW SP13

    SAP just delivered a note to fix this issue. The number is 2022294.
