Port mapping in Time Machine

I cannot see where in Time Machine I can set port mapping. There should be a drop down box for set up service. I'm trying to access Echolink.

Time Machine is software to back up your Mac to a hard drive. Won't be anything about port mapping there.
Maybe you meant to ask about a Time Capsule? If yes, Port Mapping is set up using AirPort Utility on your Mac. It is located as follows: Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility.
Hold down the option key on your Mac while you double click on the picture of the Time Capsule
Click the Network tab
IF.....the Time Capsule has been configured to provide DHCP and NAT service for the network, you will see the Port Mapping Setup there.
IF....the Time Capsule has been setup to work with your modem/router in Bridge Mode, the Port Mapping settings are greyed out and cannot be accessed. Port Mapping service must be set up on your modem/router.....not on the Time Capsule.

^^ that's the main problem. Here's the full history.
I bought a new 13" i5 MBP, early 2011 edition. I had an old white Macbook 2.14 ghz core2duo on Snow Leopard. I attempted to port over my time machine backup, but encountered problems in that my User was inaccessible from the new computer after the import finished, and I had to go in and change the root password, etc, and for some reason or another, I couldn't install any programs at all from that administrator's account. By "couldn't" I mean I could install them, but upon installation they would never boot. So, I took it to the apple store and did a clean install from the most up to date Lion OSX. Then, I created a brand new admin account, instead of trying to import the old one, and things seemed great. Then, I just imported my old files from the TM backup, but not any system settings, permissions, or user data. Just my Docs, pics, vids, apps, and itunes stuff.
Here's where things get weird again. I imported this stuff under the name "old", but all of these folders have a red negative sign on them, marking them as restricted. So, from my main admin account, I cannot even peruse these folders. Since I didn't import user data, I can't sign in to the "old" account to change permissions. I already tried to change the permissions from system preferences, but that didn't change anything. And now, for whatever reason, of all the apps that were imported then, MS Office is the only set of apps that does not work. When I click on it, it just says there was a problem and asks if I'd like to send a report to apple. I tried reinstalling it to no avail. I'm an English student, so i really need access to Word. Can anyone help? The Apple store is a major detour for me and would like to fix this issue myself.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

Configure backup map time machine

Maybe a stupid question but is it possible to configure a map where time machine puts the backup file or can it only be placed in the root of the HD?

As WBW says, TM backups are automatically put at the top level of a drive +*or partition.+*
If you want to have other data on the same drive, it's best to partition it so Time Machine has it's own, exclusive space. See #3 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

Can't boot after installation of Time Machine

I am not sure I am posting on the write forum here but I will try anyway.
I have recently set-up TM to back up my system on a 150 Go partition of an external 250 Go HD that I formated for Mac (it used to be a PC format). All worked fine and I performed my first (and all the subsequent) backup.
Please note that this external HD is constantly connected to my new MB via a USB2 port and is set to auto power (so that it turns ON automatically when my MB is on and connected to the HD - which should be constantly if I did not face the problem that I am facing now).
Now that is where it becomes tricky. Ever since I did that, my system does not boot. I mean that I never get to the grey screen when the Apple logo shows. Even stranger, my external HD starts showing signs of activity, as if my MB were trying to boot from it. If I do nothing, I never get to grey logo screen and never reach the login page and, of course, can never use the computer (I must confess I gave up waiting after 10 minutes, but my system usually boots in 30 to 40 seconds).
After 10 minutes, I switched off my external HD and within 5 seconds, boot sequence resumed normally (i.e. grey screen with Apple logo followed by login page).
So now, I must switch off my external HD, switch on my MB and switch on my external HD when I am logged in....it can't be right.
It all looks very strange to me and I have no idea as to what I should do to stop this from happening (I switched 2 weeks ago to Mac).
Any thoughts anyone ?

I'm back. Yes, reformatting/partitioning will remove all data. So move what you need to preserve OFF of the drive. Below is the procedure I use.

For Time Machine to work properly, the hard disk must be formatted “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and its’ Partition Scheme should be either GUID or Apple Partition Map.
Time Machine is incompatible with disks partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR). Unfortunately, this describes nearly every hard drive you can buy because MBR is a Windows partition scheme. (Naturally, this DOES NOT apply to Apples’ Time Capsule.)
For some, Time Machine begins to perform as expected with a new external hard disk. But then the initial full backup or subsequent incremental backups fail. The user only later discovers the hard disk was still partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR).
One article on Time Machine made this observation: “Virtually everybody will have to open Disk Utility and repartition the disk as APM or GUID. It doesn't really matter which one because the Time Machine disk will not be bootable anyway. APM allows a disk to boot a PowerPC, GUID allows the disk to boot an Intel processor but both are easily digestible by Time Machine on either kind of processor.” [http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html]
It’s been recommended by many here that your reserve +at least+ double the size of your primary hard disk, that way Time Machine backups have room to grow as the size of your data grows. Additionally, the more space you give Time Machine the more history it can preserve. The less space you reserve for Time Machine the sooner older backups & deleted items will disappear.
One poster recommended this regarding multiple partitions: “If you do create multiple partitions (half and half would be a good place to start), make sure you use the first partition for Time Machine, and the second for your own stuff (the first one will be on top in the graphical representation shown in Disk Utility; you'll understand when you see the partition tab). This way, you can expand the Time Machine volume at any later time by deleting the second partition. For "Volume Scheme" choose "1 partition". (Choose 2 partitions if you intend on storing other data on the disk besides your Time Machine backups. Ensure that the two partitions have different names.)
Name the disk.
Format should be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
Click "Options".
Select either GUID or Apple Partition Map. (See above for significance)
Click "OK".
Click "Apply". Then click “Partition”.
Once the external hard disk is repartitioned, select it again in Time Machine preferences and use it for your backups. If you chose to create 2 partitions, then select the first partition for Time Machine backups, and the second for additional files/folders.

Time Machine no longer working with External Hard drive

I have an iMac 24 and an Iomega 500Gb drive. TimeMachine was working fine when I first set it up over Firewire. I then bought a MacBook and tried to use a the same drive to run separate Time Machine backups. I aborted it when I ran out of time as I was going away.
The iMac and the MacBook no longer recognise the Iomega drive as valid. I get an error about the drive being read only.
How can I resolve or reset this to get the iMac backups working? I'll probably buy a portable drive for the MacBook backups.

Unfortunately, your going to have to reformat the drive. There is no fix for the "Read Only" issue at this time.

How can one do a full system restore from Time Machine to a Macbook Air

I recently had a major crash on my two internal disc DualG5. The system internal disk failed completely and I used Time Machine to do a full system restore to the second internal disc. It worked PERFECTLY!! I followed the instructions in support

This involved inserting the Leopard DVD into the optical drive and backing up from my external LaCie time machine backup.
I also have a MacBook Air. I use an external USB HD drive as Time Machine backup. The Air only has one USB port. I have an external DVD drive for the Air. Clearly, I will not be able to mount the DVD and External disk at the same time unless I use a small hub. I guess this will work but is there any other work around. Could I do a full reinstall and then connect the external HD?

Alternatively, you could use Remote Disc Sharing (via the DualG5) to do the install and reserve the USB port for the Time Machine disk.

AEBS Ethernet NAS Hard Drive + USB Time Machine Backup

Hello,
I currently have an Airport Extreme Base Station, which I utilize the USB port for Wireless Time Machine Backups. However, I would like to know if it is possible to connect a NAS drive to the AEBS via Ethernet and still use the USB port for wireless backups for multiple Mac laptops simultaneously. The backups must also include whatever is on the NAS drive. Is this functionality possible?

The backups must also include whatever is on the NAS drive. Is this functionality possible?
No. Time Machine does not backup data FROM any network drive.

Time Machine backs up to one profile, and reads from another

I have been running backups with Time Machine, for about 2 months now. Until now, I've never really looked closely at what comes up when I run TM.
Today I've found that when the app is run, I can only jump back to states from the first two days that were backed up - 25th and 26th August, even though I've seen and forced backups throughout these 2 months.
When I look in the "Backups.backupdb" folder, there seem to be two computer profiles for backing up. They are both the name of my computer, with the second one having a number 2 appended to the folder name.
Inside the number 2 folder, I can see all of the backups performed since 26 August. It seems that my Time Machine is backing up to folder 2, but reads from folder 1!
I don't mind deleting the whole TM setup, and starting again. In some ways I prefer it, as I want to partition this drive (but not format it), and place the TM backups on a separate partition. I'm just a little cautious of deleting backups.backupdb folder, or anything inside this.
Does anyone know what's happening, and can I delete the "backups.backupdb" folder, or one of these backup profiles inside without stuffing things up?

You only have one Mac backing up to the Time Machine disk?
If so, then at some point, Time Machine lost track of the first set of backups and began a second set. Do you recall any event a day or two after you began using Time Machine that might explain this? Perhaps a system crash or swapping drives somehow? Something cause Time Machine to abandone the first set and start fresh.
If you are going to repartition the drive, here is some advise regarding how to proceed...

New External Drive how do I set it for Time Machine?

I just bought a new 250g firewire to back up my hard drive - I formatted it and it's ok and all but I want to use it to back up my entire hard drive.
I thought I was supposed to make a Disk Image?? but browsing these forums it seems I was supposed to designate it for Time Machine? I didn't know that. Can I still do that? If so what do I do? and how do I do it?
also what is disk image? I thought that was supposed to be the back up feature -
and if anyone else knows and I'm allowed more questions - I really wanted to install Final Cut Studio Pro on the external drive because apparently it ***** up disk space like a --- -well you know ----- - but it says it has to be on my regular drive - does that mean I have to uninstall some programs? can I set other software to work off the external or am I going to have the same problem?
I'm so ******!! I bought the 120 g drive thinking it was enough to run programs off of and use the other for data storage - apparently not!
I'm about 10 gigs short right now and that doesn't even count leaving something for extra space.
I'm in a time crunch too - ok who isn't I know - but really - I'm on vaca now and was supposed to be working on my projects but instead am babysitting this freakin' computer and am really getting ******!!

No disc image is required. Prepare the drive as follows:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Connect the drive to a Firewire port. Open Time Machine preferences and select the drive as the TM backup drive and turn on TM.
If you use the external drive for backups you should not use it for installing applications or storing other files. It should be used as a dedicated backup drive. If you need additional storage space get another external drive.

Canon LBP 5000 with Time Machine

I have a Canon Color Laser Printer LBP 5000 that with the CAPT Driver ver. 1.7 work well with USB Connections.
I'm not able to configure it when connected with the USB port of a time machine.
How can I do this? I need to puse the printer over WiFi Connection.

Hi jorgos,
You should be able to connect MP800R wired or wirelessly to the Time Capsule. While for scanning, I think most scanner (so far I have not seen anyone success in doing it) cannot scan it through Time Capsule or wireless router.
I had only tested standalone USB scanner with Time Capsule. The TC cannot detect the scanner at all.
I had tried HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 with a Cisco wireless router in both wired and wireless mode. Printing has no problem but scanner will not detect by other PCs.
A work around is to walk over to the scanner, scanned it and send/email from the scanner to your desire PC. This is how those office Xero all-in-one copier work as well.
Hope the work-around is acceptable.

Time machine - EHD files to another EHD

I use a MacAir, due to a small internal HD, I keep all my libraries (iPhoto and iTunes) on an EHD.
I have a second EHD for my Time Machine.
How can I have the EHD-Time machine to backup my Data EHD (libraries)?

Yes you can. Plug in the hard drive where you have your libraries on one USB port and the time machine backup on the other. Go to System Preferences, Time Machine, Options and there you'll see a list of items that are exluded from your time machine backup with your external HD (the one with the libraries) listed in it, remove it from the list and do a time machine backup. Time machine will now backup the contents of the hard drive containing your libraries.
This works on a 2011 macbook air running Lion 10.7.2.

WRT1900AC and Apple Time Machine backups

I just bought this router, am getting a 27" iMac running OSX Mavericks, and wanted to put storage on the router to use for Time Machine backups. I have the latest firmware, but, the PC Magazine review of the router stated that it doesn't work with TIme Machine. Is that still true, or will it work now?

I can confirm the WRT1900AC DOES NOT work with a hard drive connected to it's USB port as a time machine disk. I have a 2Tb drive formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which is required by the Time Capsule utility to function properly, and the disc is visible using the SmartWiFi interface. However, when I enter the Time Machine Preferences on my Mac, and select the "Choose Disk" option, the drive does not appear as a option.
This is a terrible shame, since now I have to connect my old Time Capsule in Bridged Mode just to use the backup option on my wireless network. Other than this and a few minor quirks, the router is a stellar piece of equipment.
Hopefully Linksys will address this with a future firmware or once the open source software has been properly developed and this will be a perfect device.

Time machine does not notify re backups

Its also saving "missed" backups to your hard-drive for later transfer to time machine - so the backup is still occurring - just not to the time machine disk (same for Icloud backups).
As it is baking up the engineers may have decided you do not need a message -- you may want to give feedback to apple (this is not the place - go to apple support - that you till would like the message because .......
If you are using a laptop - consider getting a docking port (if available) for home use - that way you can have all hardware hooked up to the docking port so the time machine drive should load up and backups continue while at home. (docking ports make it easy to hook up printers, drives, full keyboards and an extra monitor to a lap top and keeps the laptop off the desktop so it can get some air).

Backupd crashed on Time Machine backup.

This happens every time I try to do a backup, I can't say for sure when it started but it was working fine for the first day after I set up the drive.

While you may have 'formatted' the drive correctly, you may NOT have 'partitioned' the drive correctly. See the following...

For Time Machine to work properly, the hard disk must be formatted “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and its’ Partition Scheme should be either GUID or Apple Partition Map.
Time Machine is incompatible with disks partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR). Unfortunately, this describes nearly every hard drive you can buy because MBR is a Windows partition scheme. (Naturally, this DOES NOT apply to Apples’ Time Capsule.)
For some, Time Machine begins to perform as expected with a new external hard disk. But then the initial full backup or subsequent incremental backups fail. The user only later discovers the hard disk was still partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR).
One article on Time Machine made this observation: “Virtually everybody will have to open Disk Utility and repartition the disk as APM or GUID. It doesn't really matter which one because the Time Machine disk will not be bootable anyway. APM allows a disk to boot a PowerPC, GUID allows the disk to boot an Intel processor but both are easily digestible by Time Machine on either kind of processor.” [http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html]
It’s been recommended by many here that your reserve +at least+ double the size of your primary hard disk, that way Time Machine backups have room to grow as the size of your data grows. Additionally, the more space you give Time Machine the more history it can preserve. The less space you reserve for Time Machine the sooner older backups & deleted items will disappear.
One poster recommended this regarding multiple partitions: “If you do create multiple partitions (half and half would be a good place to start), make sure you use the first partition for Time Machine, and the second for your own stuff (the first one will be on top in the graphical representation shown in Disk Utility; you'll understand when you see the partition tab). This way, you can expand the Time Machine volume at any later time by deleting the second partition. Disk Utility allows this dynamic re-sizing of volumes, but volumes can only be expanded toward the end of the drive, when a volume that comes after is deleted to create the room.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1712437&tstart=0]
Procedure
Connect the hard disk you wish to use for Time Machine backups.
Launch Disk Utility.
It will appear twice in the pane on the left. (Make sure you recognize that it is different from the 2 icons that represent your Macs' internal drive.) The upper entry represent the device as a whole, including the controller inside. The lower entry represents the hard disk contained within the device.
Click on the upper icon of the external hard disk.
Select the "Partition" tab.
For "Volume Scheme" choose "1 partition". (Choose 2 partitions if you intend on storing other data on the disk besides your Time Machine backups. Ensure that the two partitions have different names.)
Name the disk.
Format should be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
Click "Options".
Select either GUID or Apple Partition Map. (See above for significance)
Click "OK".
Click "Apply". Then click “Partition”.
Once the external hard disk is repartitioned, select it again in Time Machine preferences and use it for your backups. If you chose to create 2 partitions, then select the first partition for Time Machine backups, and the second for additional files/folders.
