Portal with 5000 users

I have been asked by a client to investigate how Portal can handle many users.
The number in question is approx 5000 with monthly access peaks where most of them want access simultaneously.
What kind of problems should we anticipate? Will Apache be able to handle this? Must Portal be designed in any specific way?
I know the question is wage but any experiences from high loads are welcome.

Take a look at the scalability white papers for 3.0.9 available on http://portalcenter.oracle.com.
They have detailed calculations for sizing Portal, and also give you my.oracle.com as an example of
a high volume Portal site.
Also, don't forget to read up on distributed Portal architecture.

Hi Israel,
It is possible to have same user logged in through differnt terminals or browser windows. However if there are say 10 roles assigned to that user, all 10 will be visible in all the windows. However you may open and work on different roles.. in the different windows.
Note that the real time collaboration features shall not be available if the same user logs in multiple times.

How to force a new password in portal with LDAP user? external users

With an external portal (used by agents that do not work for you or reside in your office), company policy is for password to be changed every qtr.
If the users are creating as LDAP users how to force them to change their password when required?
Is this a custom application that needs to be written so when they log into the portal if the qtr has expired the portal ask them to enter a new password that becomes valid for the next qtr.
Versus internally deleting and emailing all the users a new password?

We are getting one problem when we are creating user in LDAP and login with that user in Portal that time we are getting Password change screen , but when we create a user in LDAP and change the password of that user in LDAP then when the user tries to Login to portal that time we are not able to see the password change screen.
But again if we change the password of that user through Portal we are able to see change password screen.
can you help on this how we can force the user to change password when we are changing password in LDAP or in SAP System.

Toplink\JPA vs JDBC - Toplink died for my app with 5000 users

Hi All Just a quick question about performance when comparing toplink jpa ans jdbc.
I have an app I just develpoed using toplink for all data acces that will have approx 5000 users and initial testing with 200 things look good. However after launch and going live for 5000 people the app blew up. Lot's of memory heap errors, and TopLink exceptions...
To make things work I have replaced all the toplink with traditional JDBC, this works but I am currious as to why toplink blew up? I notice when JDev creates the Toplink code that it never does any checking for open connections and never explicitly closes connections. Is this something that I have to do?
I should not that I was not using datacontrols directly, I created a datacontrol but then ised the FacesContext to create a list of results in the backing bean??
Anyway, I know that's not a great description but I thought I would throw this question out there and see what people had to say?

It is hard to say where a memory issue occurred. Normally usage of a memory profiler such as JRockit JRA, or JProfiler is useful in debugging such issues.
There were a couple related memory issues in previous releases, so ensure you have the latest release or patch release.
Using an isolated (shared=false) or weak cache may also help.
In general you should be able to scale to 5000 users without any issues.

Logging into portal with r3 user id and password.

I need to login to a portal using R3 user ID and password.
It would be really helpful if anyone could provide me with the steps involved in it.

Yes it is ABAP System Tab and not ABAP Server Tab.
Before going to the ABAP System Tab, Select ABAP System from the dropdown(in Data Source Tab) and then you should be able to enter ECC Server Details.
I hope you created SAPJSF as suggested in the help link and attaced the required ABAP roles to the user.
Also Ensure to test with Test Connection button to be succesful.
If error persists,Please post the errror details

How to view a BI query with anonymous user in the portal

Cause when i try to view a query the portal always ask for authentification. And i don't want to sign with a user cause my portal is for everybody and if the user logged in it shows the roles that previously were assigned.

do you have sso configured between portal and BW server, if yes the authentication pop up should not come.
if you dont want to do sso between portal and bw server and still want to logon to BW query with anonymous user,
in you bw server go to transaction sicf and navigate to DEFAULT_HOST->SAP->BW->BEX and double click on bex node in the resulting window, log on details section provide a default userid/password

Portal with reverse proxy

I have been trying to implement my portal with a reverse proxy as described in the whitepaper Oracle9iASPortal Configuration Options dated Dec 2000. It hasn't gone well. I did get it to work on a plain portal with no users or customizations but now when I try to set it up with a portal with minor configuration changes, it no longer works thru the reverse proxy. Has anyone had success using Oracle9iASPortal v 1.0.2.1 with a reverse proxy?

How to login with different User in Portal

Hi Experts,
My requirment is quite different here, I want to login with different user in single login.
My senario is like this for your understading...
First I have loged in with one user and go to the one customized screens where I have list of all the portal users in a drop down.
Here I am selecting one User from the list and Click on Submit button...then new window should open with this(selected) user login...
Can anybody suggest me that what I suppose to do this to achieve this.
what are parameters new user expects for login?
what 'll be my approach for this?

it works only when, do this on fresh browser .. if someone has already Logged in and then try to open with different user name then it won't work.
if I'll change URL with other user in the same browser like this..
http://server:50000/irj/portal?j_user=demouser&j_password=Pa$$word
then shows only previous page.
But my requirement is to open different user page from the already logon user.

Unable to created users through UME on portal with AS ABAP as its data source.
I have assigned SAP_BC_JSF_COMMUNICATION to the user SAPJSF but this only helps in editing the already existing users but not in creating new users on portal.
I have checked that that the role SAP_BC_JSF_COMMUNICATION is properly generated and has * in all authorizations. I have even assigned SAP_ALL and SAP_NEW to SAPJSF and another ID.
DO we need to make any config changes to make the database writable from portal. Please advise.

If your system is a AS ABAP + +JAVA System,, you have to do the following
1. Login to Client 001 using SAP GUI
2. Create a user id
3. Login to portal and you will be able to see the user.
4.Assign him the portal rights
If you want the portal to use seperate Database for USers, there is a setting in Visual admin, that you can change for the same, but i dont remember that

did you finally manage to get what you requested here above ? Indeed, I am also struggling to set up the same (public website with individual content sharing with external authentified user).
For external user, I am quite sure that we need to go through MS ID creation (I have created some test users using https://login.live.com).
Our public website is done and (almost) working. I have then created a sub-site for the same, this one to manage permission based on authentified user
But I am stuck when trying to assign a document library with relavant permission.
Would be great to share our feedback and I have searched a lto on the web and did not find any satisfying answer to this design (If there is any... here is my doubt...)

It means what it sais, your J2EE_ADMIN user doesn't have enough authorization.
Chech if the appropriate authorization is assigned in your abap stack which belongs to the java stack you logon to:
Role SAP_J2EE_ADMIN should be assigned to user J2EE_ADMIN.

I am completely new to the MDM. So please give me some idea , what is the meanin for following points.
1) Using the Portal with Role Based security as entry point for capacity and Routing Maintaince(These two are some modules).
2) Additionally , Portal should have capability to enter in to the MDM for future master data maintence. Feeds of data will need to be come from SAP 4.6c

It requires the entire land scape like EP server and MDM server both should be configured in SLD.
Your requirement is maintaing and updating the MDM data with Enterprise portal.We have some Business Packages to install in Portal inorder to access the functionality of MDM.
Portal gives you a secure role based functionality of MDM through Single sign on (login into the portal access any application) to their end users.

Change configuration of a user with another user

Hi gurus,
I would like to know if it is possible to change the configuration of users with an admin user.
For example. I don't have the pass of user A. Meanwhile, I nedd to change the layout of an appraisal document, a specif portal configuration for that user. Is it possible to change that configuration with my user.
I asking this becausa I'm doing maintenance of SAP portals and some users don't give access to their accounts for privacy reasons. Do you have any ideia if it is possible?
My specific case is HCM. I need to change add an entry to a layout of an user but I can not access to his account. It may look nonsense, but sometimes it happens.

It is possible to change the configuration of users with an admin user.,as such only if you have administrator rights.If u wan tto change the appraisal document with the specified user if suppose you are saying that user a is not there ,admin user can be used for editing the particular document ,where in all the information can be there with administrator .

Anonymous access with named users

Hi!
I am trying to set up anonymous access with named users on EP6 SP9. I am using Database only as UME Data storage. I have applied the note #728106, since most of the content is html-pages on the KM.
I defined the UME settings ume.login.guest_user.uniqueids=anon01,anon02
ume.login.anonymous_user.mode=1
Restarted the server and attached user account into roles (which contain only anonymous content).
I then accessed the page /irj/portal/anonymous (or the longer version /irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.portal.navigation.portallauncher.anonymous) and everything was fine. However I wasn't able to get the portal working with /irj/portal/anonymous?j_user=anon02. I always received Portal runtime error. From the logs I saw that the portal tried to access as user anon01.
When I changed the UME settings into
ume.login.guest_user.uniqueids=anon02,anon01
I was able to get the anon02 user account working, but not /irj/portal/anonymous?j_user=anon01. From the logs I saw that the portal tried to access as user anon02.
Both user account are using the same rule, portal desktop and framework page. I can see the correct (and different) TLN for each user only in the content are I see this error.
Any ideas?

I need to switch between two named anonymous users.
It works fine using http://<server>:<port>/irj/portal?j_user=<first_Guest_user>&j_password=<pwd_of_first_Guest_user>&login_submit=true
Then to switch to the other user I must do a log-off or close the browser and input the other url http://<server>:<port>/irj/portal?j_user=<second_Guest_user>&j_password=<pwd_of_second_Guest_user>&login_submit=true
I developed a servlet to switch the users using IAuthentication (method forceLogoffUser) and then redirect to the respective url. But when I call forceLogoffUser method I get a login screen and the script stop executing. Passing 'returnURL' parameter did not work.
Parameters:
req - HttpServletRequest
resp - HttpServletResponse
returnURL - url to use to logon again.
Is there a way to switch automaticaly between the two named anonymous users?
