Position() method -- any equivalent outside XSLT

Hi, here's my problem:
I'm trying to assign alternate-color backgrounds to a generated table, just as shown in the SampleXMLSQLServlet that comes with JDeveloper 3.
I'm trying to use an equivalent syntax to the
<xsl:for-each select='ROWSET/ROW'>
<tr>
<td class='r{position() mod 2}'>
<xsl:value-of select='ENAME'/>
</td>
</tr>
</xsl:for-each>that's provided in the example, however I want to use it in a client-side stylesheet using the
xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/TR/WD-xsl"namespace. The simple 'r{position() mod 2}' syntax won't work in that case, and I've tried to find a workaround using the index() pattern method, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

In the older version of Microsoft XSL, you'll need to:
<tr>
<xsl:attribute name="class">
<xsl:value-of select="index()">
</xsl:attribute>
</tr>
and then combine this with some use
of <xsl:eval> to do the mod calculation.
