Possible to block document when someone read it?

Hi everyone,
my client want a specific pdf file in the portal km to be blocked once someone read it, and unblocked when the person close the opened file.
I did not found any pertinent infos on this, and I don't think it can be made without creating a custom program/service.
We are using 2004s SP8 with KM in FSDB mode, Windows 2003.
Have anyone had a similar situation?

Hi,
if you are opening a PDF file for reading, it's possible to know when the file is opened, however it's IMpossible to know when the file is closed. To the server that is a request-response call, it doesn't care what the user does with the file. You need to implement something like the local editing feature available in KM. The user must somehow inform the system that it has closed the file, just closing it won't do it.
You could block the file and display a button next to its name so the user could unblock it. A KM filter could check if the file is blocked before allowing more users to read it.
However I'm not quite sure what's the point of blocking a read-only file.

I have a question about blocking document ,do we have to block the document when filling the setup table and when doing initial extracion both ? or just filling the setup table?this confuess me .
in experiance ,how long will it take to fill the setup table if the total records reaches about 5 million .

Hi,
It is recommended to fill the setup table after logging off all the transaction users, preferably during nights (basically you will have to take a down time of the R/3 system). if you have taken a down time then it is not necessary to block documents, since there would be no users posting transactions.
The blocking would be useful if you are trying to fill the setup table during the day time and there is possibility that users could post some documents. However by blocking documents, this would prevent the users from posting / creating documents and this could hamper the normal business (like creating billing documents, orders etc).
if you are doing the filling up at night after taking down time then the approx time could be 1 hour(my guess) again this could depend on the application servers, RAM etc. However if you are trying to do it during the peak hours, i.e when the users are doing transaction(which is not recommended), then it is very difficult to estimate the time.

If you look at your code you will see
cPath: "/F/temp/"+filename+"_" + i +".pdf"
which is the Acrobat version of saying
F:\TEMP\ ... your filename ...
Clearly won't work unless you change it to use your own preferred path.

Hi.
I often need to share sensitive documents where I only want the recipient to receive it. It's human nature to forward files though, and people send off my documents to others. Password protection is not good enough as passwords can be forwarded along with the document.
Is it possible to have a feature where when someone opens a file, I get an email with their IP address and the time of opening?
Or is there some other kind of copy protection, but not as cumbersome as asking for being tied to a CPU and all that DRM jazz?

Of course, even if it IS possible to write a script that will automatically invoke the user's email program, I doubt that you will be able to actually make it SEND the message without the user clicking on the send button in the program
Sending an email without the user knowing is going to be seen as a virus (trojan? whatever the correct term) by the OS and any security software the user has, and will be blocked and reported... and could get you in a LOT of trouble with your Internet provider

You could try to use a motion sensor - in a do-it-yourself store you can buy motion sensors that turn on the lights when a burglar approaches the property. Connect this sensor to the remote control of your camera instead of to a light.
Probably you can buy ready-made motion sensitive remote controls, the photographers here will know. You would need this kind of remote control for wildlife photography.

When saving a PDF from a FrameMaker book, is it possible to set document filenames as bookmarks in the PDF? Currently when I have a Framemaker book that I want to save as a PDF, I choose Save Book As and then choose PDF for the file format. A dialog box comes up in which I can choose the Bookmarks tab and choose which tagged content I want to be made into bookmarks in the PDF file. What if I would rather have the filename of a document rather than the chapter title be a bookmark in the PDF? Is that possible? Where would I choose that option? Thanks!

There are two ways that you could do this. You can either use postscript text frames and enter the correct pdfmark entries to show the file name with the corresponding actions (i.e. where to go in the PDF) or you can use hidden text in FM and the "Filename (Short) " variable in a unique paratag to be picked up by FM's bookmark creation.

The hidden text route would use FM's Color Views to specify a colour as Invisible. This will make the content visually disappear from the screen (and any output), but FM will still be able to read the contents of any text that is coloured with the Invisible colour(s).
1. Pick or create a colour that you want to be invisible. [Magenta is usually a good bet and stands out visually].
2. Set that colour to be invisible in View 1 and visible in View 6. [you can use the shortcut <esc> v 1 and <esc> v 6 to toggle between the views.]
3. Create a paratag to use for the filename and set the font colour to use the invisible colour.
3. In the title of each chapter file, drop an anchored frame that is set to be outside of the text frame [so it won't interfere with any other content].
4. In that AFrame, insert a text frame and use the invisible paratag defined in step 3.
5. Insert the Filename (Short) variable in that text frame.
6. Repeat steps for all files to be included in the bookmarks.
When creating the PDF bookmarks, select only the paratag used for the invisible colour.
Don't forget to toggle the View to be invisible (i.e. <esc> v 1 - this also works at the book level for all files in the book).

Unable to save Word documents when accessing them directly from the site because the document never converts from a read-only even though the User chooses to enable editing

Issue has only popped up recently and cannot reproduce in a Test environment. Unaware of any SharePoint changes, so hoping someone can point me in the correct direction.
Previously Word document did not have to be physically checked out, but rather the editing of the doc also checked out the doc in a document library. This is the way we want it to remain –
no manual check-out process. Now if a doc is edited without being checked-out, there is an issue with the process as the application thinks the doc is read-only (message received when trying to save the doc) even if enable editing is selected. The
following message appears when you try to save the document:
This message can appear if you have been editing a file that was opened as read-only. A file opened as read-only will have (Read-Only) appended to the file name as it appears in the title bar of Word. You can still save the document, but you must
save it by using a different file name. If you use Windows Explorer to change the read-only properties of the file, while the file is open in Word, it will not enable Word to save the file. Word must open a non-read-only version of the file in order to save
it by using its original file name. If you have not made any changes to the file, you can close it, and then use the following steps to make the file writeable. 1. Click the File tab, and then click Open. 2. Browse to the file and right-click it. 3. Click
Properties, and then clear the Read-Only check box. 4. Reopen the file. If you have made changes to a read-only file, you can save it, and then use the following steps to give the modified file the original file name. 1. Click the File tab, and then click
Save As. 2. Enter a different file name, and then click Save. 3. NOTE: Adding "Rev1", or "Mod1" to the original file name may help you to remember it later. 4. Click the File tab, and then click Close. 5. Open Windows Explorer. 6. Browse
to the original read-only file. 7. Rename the read-only file. 8. Browse to the new file. 9. Rename the new file to the name of the original file. Do not delete the read-only file until after you have determined you no longer need it.
Previously, when check-out was optional, a file was checked out automatically when someone opened it for editing, unless it was already checked out. The editing commands notified the User that the file is being/was checked out. The real issue is the
word doc can no longer be saved as the application still believes the doc is read-only.

According to your description, you give the domain admin full control over files on the old file server, but you cannot move the files to the new file server. After pull the files from the old to the new file server, the domain admin can only read the files
on the new file server.
How did you move the files from the old file server to the new file server? Did you setup replication between the two file server or use robocopy?
Please check the files permissions on the new file server to see if the permissions are changed, then share the folder on the new file server to everyone to see the result.

Hi,
Try saving your settings as a Preset by clicking the Preset drop down and then select Save Current Settings as a Preset.
Next try changing the settings by selecting the saved preset.
That allow saving the settings for a specific printer, I assume it may also allow selecting these settings for another printer.

I want all my devices to be on a password related internet but the double nat on my TC makes weird things happen and slow. I try bridge mode but the internet doesn't work.
You building supplied internet is a cheap service that is without proper routable addresses..
Therefore to use more than one IP you MUST have double NAT.. sorry there is no choice..
Slow that is because you are sharing internet with every other person in the building.. get your own broadband service.
Bridge will not work.. it cannot work because the building only has private IP addressing. And they only give you a single address.
You can put a password on the wireless.. go to the airport utility and put in a password.
Other than that I don't understand what password you expect.

I was wondering if it was possible to control the positoning of a new window that pops up when someone clicks one of my site document links on my dreamweaver site. When a link is clicked and the new window pops up, I'd like to control the window size and positioning of the new window. Is this possible without having to use a tooltip or other option?

Some browsers will display pop-up windows in the parent window, some will open them in a new tab or new window. I'm afraid there is nothing you can do about end user settings.
