Possible to return List T from a method based on Class T parameter?

Hi all,
I would like to implement a method as below:
private List<T> createList(Class<T> cls) {
}This method would then be possible to call this way:
List<?> myDynamicGenericList = createList(someClass);Where someClass could be BigDecimal.class (should be known at compile time I suppose, cannot use reference to just "Class")
I would then like to be able to get type check when adding elements in myDynamicGenericList:
myDynamicGenericList .add(someBigDecimal); // Ok!
myDynamicGenericList .add(someString); // Compilation error!Is this possible to achieve?
With best regards/
AC

  public static void main(String args[])
    List<BigDecimal> myList = createList(BigDecimal.class);
    myList.add(new BigDecimal("45.00"));
    myList.add(new BigDecimal("82.95"));
    for (BigDecimal bd : myList)
      System.out.println("decimal["+bd.toString()+"]");
  static <T> List<T>  createList(Class<T> someClass)
    List<T> someList = new ArrayList<T>();
    return someList;
  }Or you could do this:
  static <T extends Number> List<T>  createList(Class<T> someClass)
    List<T> someList = new ArrayList<T>();
    return someList;
  }

  • How to return a object from a method in a java program to a C++ call (JNI )

    Sir,
    I am new to java and i have been assigned a task to be done using JNI.
    My question is,
    How can i return an object from a method in a java program to a call for the same method in a C++program using JNI.
    Any help or suggesstions in this regard would be very useful.
    Thanking you,
    Anjan Kumar

    Hello
    I would like to suggest that JNI should be your last choice and not your first choice. JNI is hard to get right. Since the JNI code is executing in the same address space as the JVM, any problems (on either side) will take down the entire process. It dilutes the Write Once Run Anywhere (WORA) value proposition because you need to provide the JNI component for all hardware/OS platforms. If you can keep your legacy code(or whatever you feel you need to do in JNI) in a separate address space and communicate via some inter-process channel, you end up with a system that is more flexible, portable, and scalable.
    Having said all that, head over to the Java Native Interface: Programmer's Guide and Specification web page:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jni/
    Scroll down to the Download the example code in this book in ZIP or tar.gz formats. links and download the example source. Study and run the example sources. The jniexamples/chap5/MyNewString demo creates a java.lang.String object in native code and returns it to the Java Language program.

  • Returning a HashMap K, M from a method of a class typed M

    So, this is what I have. I have a class parameterized for a bean type of a collection it receives, and in a method of the class, I need (would like) to return a HashMap typed as <K, M> as in:
    public class MyClass<M> {
       private Collection<M> beanList;
       public HashMap<K, M> getMap(  /* what do I do here */ );
    }I tried to cheat from looking at the Collections.sort method, knowing it uses the List type in its return type as in:
    public static <T extends Comparable<? super T>> void sort(List<T> list)So, I am trying:
    public HashMap<K, M> getMap(Class<K> keyType)But, it is telling me I need to create class K.
    So... how does the Collections.sort method get away with it and I can't????
    I suppose I could write the method as:
    public HashMap<Object, M> getMap()but became somewhat challenged by my first guess.
    Any ideas... or just go with the HashMap with the untyped key?

    ejp wrote:
    provided K is inferable from the arguments.Or from the assignment context:
    Set<String> empty = Collections.emptySet();
    Otherwise you have to parameterise the class on <K, M>.You may also specifically provide K when you use the method if the context doesn't give the compiler enough information or if you want to override it.
    Example:
    Set<Object> singleton1 = Collections.singleton("Hello"); //error
    Set<Object> singleton2 = Collections.<Object>singleton("Hello"); //fineEdited by: endasil on 14-May-2010 4:13 PM

  • Returning multiple values from a method

    I have to return a string and int array from a method (both are only of size 5 for a total of 10) What would be considered the best manner in which to do this ?
    Dr there's 10 points in it for you or whoever gives me the best idea ;-P

    hey here it is easy that you can return many things
    what ever you want from a single method man....
    you know the main thing what you have to do is.....
    Just create a VECTOR or LIST object, then add all the
    values what ever you want to return like string and
    int array like etc...
    Then make the method return type is VECTOR and after
    getting the Vector you can Iterate that and you can
    get all the values from that method what ever you
    want....
    jus try this,,,,,,,,,,
    Its really work......
    reply me..but it relies purely on trust that the returned collection would contain exactly the right number and type of arguments

  • Possibility of returning derived type from inherited operator

    Hello forum,
    I am wondering the possibility of returning a derived type from an inherited operator. A test case would include two class definitions such as:
    Public Class Base
    Dim _a
    Public ReadOnly Property A As Integer
    Get
    Return _a
    End Get
    End Property
    Public Shared Operator +(ByVal base1 As Base, _
    ByVal base2 As Base) As Base
    Return New Base(base1.A + base2.A)
    End Operator
    Public Sub New(ByVal a As Integer)
    _a = a
    End Sub
    End Class
    Public Class Derived
    Inherits Base
    Public Sub New(ByVal a As Integer)
    MyBase.New(a)
    End Sub
    End Class
    and implementation such as:
    Dim derivedA As Derived = New Derived(1)
    Dim derivedB As Derived = New Derived(1)
    Dim derivedResult As Derived = derivedA + derivedB
    'would like result as derived, not base!
    This test case returns the error that the derivedResult cannot by cast to the base type (as this is how the operator is defined). I am wondering: is there a way to change the operator definition so that the derived type is returned from the operation? There
    could be many derived types and avoiding overloading the method in each type definition could reduce the amount of code.
    Many thanks.

    I'm just Frank, not "Mr. Smith". ;-)
    I suspect that Reed is onto it with generics. He's quite familiar with it and in a question I posted a few years ago - about derived classes - he answered it using generics.
    Let's see what you or he comes up with. :)
    Still lost in code, just at a little higher level.
    Haha, I was like "who is Mr. Smith.... oh yeah, that's Frank's last name".  ;)
    @James3210:  same here... it's just Reed.  Wearing a shirt with a collar is about as formal as I get.  :)
    Anyway, back to the subject at hand, I think the generic method in conjunction with the operator overload is the way to go.  Since you'll have to write the operator on each class anyway, at least you can copy-paste the operator code and then just change
    the type used for "T":
    Public Class FooBase
    Private anInteger As Integer
    Protected Shared Function Add(Of T As {FooBase, New})(source As T, target As T) As FooBase
    Return New T() With {.anInteger = source.anInteger + target.anInteger}
    End Function
    Public Shared Operator +(source As FooBase, target As FooBase) As FooBase
    Return FooBase.Add(Of FooBase)(source, target)
    End Operator
    End Class
    Public Class DerivedFoo
    Inherits FooBase
    Public Overloads Shared Operator +(source As DerivedFoo, target As DerivedFoo) As DerivedFoo
    Return FooBase.Add(Of DerivedFoo)(source, target)
    End Operator
    End Class
    Public Class DerivedFooTwo
    Inherits FooBase
    Public Overloads Shared Operator +(source As DerivedFooTwo, target As DerivedFooTwo) As DerivedFooTwo
    Return FooBase.Add(Of DerivedFooTwo)(source, target)
    End Operator
    End Class
    In this example the shared Add() method is internal to the FooBase objects, but you could make the access modifier public if you wanted to expose the method for direct use.
    -EDIT-
    Sorry, I forgot you wanted to return the object type from the operator, not the internal result.  I've updated the code to return a new object instance.

  • Return multiple values from a method

    For a school project I have to make a parameter-less constructor that can input values from the keyboard and calculate those values. Now that I have the values how do I return them? I need to return 3 values from this parameter-less method.
    I hoope someone can help.

    Qwertyfshag wrote:
    Here is the wording of the assignment. I have copied and pasted it word for word:
    "Declare and use a no-argument (or "parameter-less") constructor to input the data needed, and to do the calculations."
    Any advice???Find a teacher who isn't an idiot. That sentence is vague ("to input the data needed"? Does that mean that it's supposed to query the user (which is terrible) or that it's supposed to encapsulate the data as hardcoded values, or what?) and is a bad design. Constructors shouldn't do this sort of thing.
    Ok I have done that part and now I want to retrieve the values of the calculations. How can I get those values out of that method What do you mean "that method"? Constructors aren't methods, and they don't return values.
    I suppose you could define a class whose constructor queries the user, and which would have a method to return values. That could be pretty simple; the method signature would be like this:
    Set<Integer> getValues();
    This seems like an advanced problem.It's not advanced; it's just garbage.
    I can't post the code in hear because that may constitute cheating. I am allowed to discuss it verbally but I cannot share code, sorry.You can't get a lot of help then. We can't psychically see what you've done so far.
    In conclusion: I have to have two methods. One method is a constructorConstructors aren't methods. If your teacher told you that they are, then he/she doesn't know what he/she is doing.
    that has NO parameters that will get input from the keyboard (done) and do the calculations (done). The other method must print that values to the screen on separate lines (not done). I don't know how to get the values out of the method.If they're two methods in the same class, then the constructor just needs to store the user input into a field of the class, and the other method can read the values in that field.

  • Return a string from a method: a problem in C++ but is it a problem in java

    I have a method which return a String from it as:
    String pattern(short i)
    String s="":
    if (i==1)
    s = "test1";
    else
    s = "test2";
    return s;
    Since s is a local vaariable to pattern(), does the code above
    create problems? I know it is a problem for C++ since the local
    variable memory address will be reused by others and thus the
    returned value may take other values sometime later or not
    readable.

    Actually, this is not a problem in C++ either if you
    just use the string class instead of the old-style
    char* from C.True, I was assuming he/she meant (in C++):
    char mylocalbuf[80];
    // put stuff in mylocalbuf here
    return mylocalbuf;
    which would be very very bad to do indeed.

  • How do I return a value from a column based on info from neighboring columns?

    I have a table of data that looks similar to this:
    Weight
    Name
    School
    Division
    106
    Name1
    School1
    1
    106
    Name2
    School2
    2
    106
    Name3
    School3
    3
    106
    Name4
    School4
    4
    113
    Name5
    School5
    1
    113
    Name6
    School6
    2
    113
    Name7
    School1
    3
    113
    Name8
    School3
    4
    It's a very large table, so there will be multiple matches for Schools, and occasionally a few matches for Names, but there will always be only one match for a given Weight and Division.
    In a separate table, how can I get the name of the person associated with the unique weight and division?
    In my head, the formula goes" "Look in the Weight column to find 106, then look in the Division column to find 4, then return the value from the Name column." But I can't figure out the formula that will do that.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi momogabi,
    This can be easily done with an index column.
    The formula I used in your original table for the index column is:
    =A2&"-"&D2. This was filled down. The column can be hidden.
    You can see the formula in the search table. If I wanted to eliminate the index column in that table the formula would look something like:
    =INDEX('Table 1-1'::B,MATCH(A2&"-"&B2,'Table 1-1'::E,0),1)
    Hope this helps.

  • Returning a ResultSet from a method

    I have wrote a method that opens a database connection, peroforms a sql query and then closes the connection. It then returns the ResultSet.
    My problem is I get this error "ResultSet is closed" when i try to work on the data from the ResultSet.
    any idea?

    A ResultSet object is automatically closed when the Statement object that generated it is closed, re-executed, or used to retrieve the next result from a sequence of multiple results.
    Try to leave the database connection and the statement through which you got the resultset open, but this is not a good way.
    You may want to use CachedRowSet instead of ResultSet.
    A CachedRowSet classa disconnected rowset that caches its data in memory; not suitable for very large data sets, but an ideal way to provide thin Java clients, such as a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or Network Computer (NC), with tabular data.

  • Is it possible to return to CR from PS without converting to a smart object?

    I saw somewhere that the was a menu in Filters to return to CR, but I don't see it in CS6.

    In CS6 and earlier you need to make the image a smart object in Camera Raw.
    Holding the Shift key changes the "Open Image" to "Open Smart Object.
    Once you are in PS you can double click the SO and return to Camera Raw.
    But the smart object needed to be created by Camera Raw for this to work.
    Converting a regular layer to a SO in Photoshop won't work. It will just open the image again in another PS window.

  • Is it possible to throw another Fault from Fault Policy handler Java Class?

    Hi,
    I am using SOA Suite 11g. My requirement is to catch any Fault that occurs in BPEL in the Fault Policy java handler, and then throw back another Fault (Which i want to create from the java class hander) by setting the Fault Part and other Fault details.
    I will be getting the Fault message and code etc for different kinds of faults from a .properties file.
    I tried creating a new BPELFault inside the handleFault method...
    BPELFaultRecoveryContextImpl bpelCtx = (BPELFaultRecoveryContextImpl) ctx;
    QName qName = new QName("http://xmlns.oracle.com/Application1_jws/FMF_Demo/FaultHandlerDemo","GenericFault");
    BPELFault flt = new BPELFault(qName);
    flt.setFaultName(qName);
    flt.setPart("<faultPartName>","Fault Message Text...");
    bpelCtx.setFault(flt);
    The new Fault is thrown back to the BPEL process, but i am not able to get the Fault details within the catch block (for GenericFault) that i have set in the Java Handler.
    Any help regarding this is highly appreciated.
