Possible to tell 32bit mode compiler to use 64 bit pointers?

Hey everyone,
Is there a way to tell the compiler that a pointer will be 64 bits when compiling in 32 bit mode, like with a pragma of somesort? On Alpha, OpenVMS, there is a way to do it, just wondering if this existed on forte/unix.

When you run a 32-bit process, I believe the operating
system limits you to a 32-bit address space (I might be wrong
here, but that's what I think). So it wouldn't do you
any good to create a 64-bit pointer in a 32-bit program because
there wouldn't be anything with a large address to point to.
Why not just compile in 64-bit mode?

There are no 64-bit pointers in 32-bit Solaris, and the process address space is limited to 32 bits.
The supported hardware (SPARC, x86, Opteron) does not provide 64-bit pointers in 32-bit mode. (That is, you cannot dereference a 64-bit value in 32-bit mode.)
Sun compilers therefore do not provide a way to create a 64-bit pointer in 32-bit mode.

  • Using PListBuddy to open Safari in 32bit mode

    Hi everyone,
We've just done an upgrade to Safari 5.1 here and some webapps at the company do not function with Safari in 64bit mode. I know I can use PListBuddy to edit the com.apple.launchservices.plist to set Safari to open in 32bit mode for each user, but I'm having trouble with the command. So far I have this: /usr/libexec/PListBuddy -c "LSArchitecturesForX86_64 i386" ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.launchservices.plist, but it gives me the error "Print: Entry, "ArchitecturesForX86_64", Does Not Exist"
It looks like there is another key in the file "com.apple.Safari" that I can't seem to reference with PListBuddy.
    Any help is much appreciated
    TIA,
    Andrew

Maybe we're not talking about the same thing here:
I need to edit this key in com.apple.launchservices.plist:
    <key>LSArchitecturesForX86_64</key>
              <dict>
                        <key>com.apple.Safari</key>
                        <array>
                                  <data>
                                  AAAAAACSAAMAAQAAxe6HnQAASCsAAAAAAE8RzwBR9QUAAMY7hBkA
                                  AAAACSD//gAAAAAAAAAA/////wABAAQATxHPAA4AFgAKAFMAYQBm
                                  AGEAcgBpAC4AYQBwAHAADwAMAAUATQBhAGMASABEABIAF0FwcGxp
                                  Y2F0aW9ucy9TYWZhcmkuYXBwAAATAAEvAP//AAA=
                                  </data>
                                  <string>X86_64</string>
                        </array>
              </dict>
I need that bolded <string> to read <string>i386</string>. I need to do this for every user account on every mac in the company. I cannot use a GUI tool to do this, otherwise I wouldn't even have posted and just used PLE in the first place. Well I could, but I doubt they'd pay for all that OT
I'm having trouble using PListBuddy and defaults to do this. Added difficulty comes in since it seems this key does not even appear in the plist until Safari is manually set to 32bit mode.... So I need to first check for the existence of this key, and if not present, add it with the i386 string.
I am avoiding overwriting the entire user plist with an edited plist for the i386 specification because I've looked into these files on several user accounts and they have different entries from eachother. I do not want to overwrite these entries, just add/edit this particular key.

  • I use the Strava website frequently but it requires me to restart in 32bit mode when transferring ride info from my Garmin 305. Any way around this?

As I stated in the question... I use Strava.com website quite a bit, but when transferring ride info from my Garmin 305 it requires me to restart Firefox in 32bit mode. Is there any way around this? It can be frustrating to be working in one window and have to restart the whole browser when uploading ride data.

  • How to tell N6.5 DHCP to use a W2k8 for PXE?

    Hello,
could anyone give me a hint, how to tell my netware DHCP to use a Windows Server 2008 R2 running Acronis with PXE Server?
    Actual Situation:
Netware 6.5 Sp8 Server with ZENWORKS in Cluster mode
    Netware DHCP Server
    ZEN7 SP1 Imaging
--> works fine so far, and no problem in other subnets, IP-helper are configured in the switches
    New Situation:
Netware 6.5 Sp8 Server with ZENWORKS in Cluster mode
    Netware DHCP Server
Windows Server 2008 R2 running Acronis Snap Deploy with PXE-Server - in future may be a clean Windows Deployment service without Acronis
--> that would be nice :)
    I found serveral ini-files (dts.ini, pdhcp.ini, tftp.ini) where I configured the new IP-Address of the W2k8 PXE Server.
    Now:
The Client gets its correct IP-Address from Netware DHCP
but after that the following messages:
    Auto-select:
    ZENworks Boot
Boot Server IP: --.--.--.-- (the correct one configured in the ini-files!)
    TFTP.
    PXE-T02:
PXE-E3C: TFTP Error - Access Violation
    PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
    Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot.

This option should only be set if both DHCP and PXE services are on the same server (as is probably the case in your situation as I'm guessing both DHCP as also PXE get loaded in the same cluster resource script).
For subnets serviced outside of the subnet your DHCP server is running in, you will need to configure multiple ip helpers: one that points to the DHCP server and one points to the PXE server so those requests on other subnets get serviced correctly.
To get things running it's probably easier to try to get this to work on the subnet your DHCP and PXE server are running in (so you are not also having to deal with the ip helper setup just yet). If that works, then expand you configuration to different subnets & ip helpers.
    Hope that helps,
    Willem
As a ps and for clarification, don't load the PDHCP on any of the NetWare servers... just have the PXE PDHCP service running on the Windows server.
The PDHCP/PXE service for ZenWorks won't understand/work with the Arconis one and visa versa.

  • How do you get 10.6 Server to permanently reboot and startup in 32bit mode?

    Hey all,
I need to get my newly installed snow leopard server on a Mac Pro Quad Core running v10.6.2 of Server to permanently boot into 32 bit mode instead of the default 64bit mode that it always boots in.
I need permanent 32bit mode in order to give me a solution to proper driver support for PCI Express eSata Cards with "Port Multiplier" support that do not currently have 64bit drivers for OS X 10.6 Server yet?
I have forcefully booted into 32Bit mode with the 3 and 2 keys held down upon startup, and my eSata cards all of sudden work, and properly support my external 5 bay raid array (Backup drive) which uses port multiplier technology. These same controller cards do not load the driver (because there is no compatible driver at the moment) in default 64 bit mode that OS X Server boots into.
So if I am in forced 32bit mode for the server because I held down the 3 and 2 keys all is fine, but the moment I restart the server, it all goes back to default 64bit mode and non operation of the eSata Cards
Can anyone please help me with a known solution for permanent 32bit mode that actually remembers to stay put in 32bit mode at all times??
    Cheers
    FattyBlue (Nick)

    Hi Y0$h1,
Thank you so much.. that software link worked a treat! It now permanently boots into 32bit mode, and mounts all my eSATA based Drives that are connected.
    Thanks again

  • Lost Mode and Play Sound are "Pending."  However, iCloud indicates that it connected and backed up to iCloud at a date that is 1 week after it went missing.  How is this possible without locking (Lost Mode Pending an internet connection)

    Hi,
My wife lost her iPhone two weeks ago while on vacation in London (cell service inoperative in foreign country).  Using Find My iPhone app on my device, I activated Lost Mode and Play Sound.  However, both are listed as "Pending," since it those actions require the phone to connect to the internet (wifi only due to no cellular data coverage.).
We recently returned home and purchased a new iPhone.
However, when looking to restore the apps/settings from her old phone using a previous iCloud backup, iCloud indicates that the old phone connected to iCloud and backed up the original phone at a date that is 1 week after it went missing.  How is this possible without locking (Lost Mode Pending an internet connection)?
If the phone was activated and connected to the internet via a wifi signal, shouldn't it immedately lock, show up on the map, Play Sound, and send me an email that the phone has been found?
I also read somewhere that if running iOS 7, the iCloud website interface enables you to track previous locations, for instance if the phone moves from wifi hotspot to hotspot.  Is that true?  If so, how do I do that?
Thank you for your time, and have a great day!
    Sincerely,
    - Matt

just giving this a wee bump as time is of the essence here and i need advice/ answers quick!
apologies if i've broke any rules!

  • Possible to overwrite a pdf when in use or open a pdf without holding/locking the file for update

Possible to overwrite a pdf when in use OR alternative open a pdf without holding/locking the file
We frequently generate pdf files from our 3D program and would like to know if it's possible to either open a pdf file in a way that it doesn't get locked or hold up so the pdf can be updated even when opened or in use.
Most programs e.g. ultra edit & notepad will let go the file when you opened and hence the file can be updated or over written even when in use.
If any guru can help, would be highly appreciated

    Hi Abbas,
It's not possible to overwrite a pdf when it is already in use by a different program or user. The file then opens up in Read Only mode.
You can make a copy of the file and then apply those changes later in the original file. That's the only possible solution.

  • Is it possible to run Tiger in Snow Leopard using Parallels?

    Hey All,
Anyone know if it is possible to run Tiger in Snow Leopard using Parallels?
I am using SPSS 16 and it is not compatible with snow leopard. A temporary fix right now if I partitioned my hard drive and installed Leopard on some extra space to run SPSS. This is kind of annoying because I only need Leopard to use SPSS. I would rather emulate it so I can listen to iTunes and check my email in SL.
What about Panther? I think I even have a copy of Panther to install in Parallels?
I read somewhere that the EULA restricts OS X from being emulated, which seems odd for Mac users who need to test or use old software. I understand though about emulating OS X on windows machine though. I guess they need to blow off the whole foot than just cut off one toe.
    Thanks for the thoughts!

From what I can tell, doing this would be, at best, of dubious legality.
Even so, the popular opinion seems to be that it would take some degree of hacking to pull off a virtual machine running OS X. I think that unless you are willing and able to undertake such a task, your best bet is to stick with a partition running an old version or wait for SPSS to be updated for Snow Leopard.
Although...... I have Parallels 4 (current version is 5) and it has an option, when setting up a new Virtual Machine, to install Mac OS X server (see image linked below). Perhaps if you could get a copy of the server edition of the OS you would have more success?

  • Is it possible to reverse a planning document posted using KP98?

Is it possible to reverse a planning document posted using KP98?
The planning data in plan 0 has been overwritten with actuals for P1-12 in error does anyone know how to reverse this posting?
    Thanks for any help!

    hi,
I have tried this and worked with my system.
Try to execute KP98 transaction with reference actual period which has no posting(future period-01/2011) and in "reser/overwite" mode.
Initially try with single cost center/cost element value.
    This will fix your issue.

there is no direct t-code to reverse posted plan data exclusively for cost centers.SAP has this function to delete all plan data in integrated module so go with above response.

Nope - you need the 32bit Java to go with the 32bit Firefox if you want Java to run

  • Is anyone else having issues with Lion on Ivybridge MBP in 32bit mode

    HI,
I'm having big issues using Lion in 32bit mode with my new MBP.  It will boot ok but then after a seemingly random period of time it will lock.  It seems to happen randomly.  I thought originally it was an issue with using the FW port and spent some time with an Apple Care engineer and we couldn't fix it.  I then re-installed Lion onto an external HD and used this without installing any extra software and it was seeming still happening.
There is nothing that I can see that triggers it, I'll just be using it normally and then suddenly it will just lock.  The first sign that somethings not right is errors with the display, parts of windows being left behind when I move them or sections of the menu bar at the top dissappearing.
Does anyone else have this issue as I've tried with Apple and the senior engineer couldn't figure it out and they've said that they haven't had any other reported issues.
    System:
    MBP - 13.3"
    Ivybridge 2.9GHz i7
    8 GB 1600 Mhz RAM
    OS 10.7.4
