From SMTP
we are getting these ...

and these...
status=deferred (temporary failure.   • Mail.app with a self-signed certificate in postfix/dovecot

I thought I'd post this tidbit about getting Mail.app to work correctly with a self-signed certificate in a postfix/dovecot Linux installation; in my case under Debian Lenny. After setting this up, my Mail.app refused to connect to the outgoing server to deliver mail. In the postfix logs, I would see "SSL_accept error from ...: -1". The problem ended up being that postfix uses the default "snakeoil" self-signed certificate, while dovecot creates its own. If the IMAP and SMTP hosts are the same as they were in my case, when you accept the dovecot certificate upon the first IMAP connection, the SMTP connection with a different certificate will fail. This is because after the accept there is now a known certificate for that host, and the new certificate presented by postfix will not match. To fix this, either use different hosts for IMAP and SMTP, or use the same (perhaps the "snakeoil") certificate in both the postfix and dovecot configuration.

Exactly the same problem, except I'm using FF v6 for Windows, not FF v4 as for the lead post. This is for a self-cert which IS trusted, although the error message says it isn't.

  • Ubuntu, postfix, dovecot, spammassassin, memcached, clamav, good enough?

Hello all, I am getting off the ground trying to do small time email hosting and have my first customer. I have setup Postfixadmin/postfix, dovecot, spamassassin, memcached, clamav, and etc as listed below. I use mostly webmin to manage the server and the postfixadmin page. Is there any recommendations anyone can make of applications I can run, or anything to make sure my email server is good enough for hosting customer email? I ran some mxtoolbox tests, and as far as I can tell it seems ok as seen below as well. Does anyone have some best practices, or tips, or anything? I am not too familiar with SPF, and even though I didn't really do much with it I don't think, it seems to show ok. I got an SSL cert and have it setup on the server as well.I see there are some settings I can change in postfixadmin to allow / use mail quote settings...

  • Mail: Linux + Postfix + Dovecot + SASLAuthd

Our corporate Fedora 10 (Linux) server is set up running Postfix and Dovecot, with SASLAuthd authentication and a self-signed certificate. There is only IMAPS service, no POP3 or IMAP.
Typically, a client (i.e. Thunderbird, Outlook, etc.) will be set up like so:
    Email Address: [email protected]
    User Name: user1
    Server: incoming.example.com
    IMAPS Port: 993
    Using SSL: YES
We have a new high-level (VP) employee with a 3G iPhone. No matter what we try, we cannot get his iPhone to successfully connect to the IMAPS service. We're not concerned with the outgoing mail, as he normally uses AT&T's cwmx.com for that.
The error we receive on the iPhone is:
Could not collect mail: Cannot connect to server incoming.example.com
The error we receive in our /var/log/maillog is:
dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (no auth attempts): rip=32.173.26.227, lip=MAI.LSE.RVE.RIP, TLS
What do I need to do to the iPhone to get it to send an auth request and collect his mail? He is adamant about using this device for mail.
    Thank you in advance.
    James

I could accept the possibility of a certificate problem if there had been any issues with the certificate at any point prior to this, but this has been an active server running this setup for over 4 years, and the only user to ever have a problem connecting is our single iPhone user.
To update, I have modified the accepted authentication mechanisms to include these:
    Digest-MD5
    Cram-MD5
    Plaintext (the original)
Changing the settings on the iPhone to what it calls "HTTP MD5 Digest" or MD5 Challenge-Response" produces the same result, highlighted here:
    (no auth attempts)
This seems to indicate, at least from the server's perspective and coming as I do from a non-Mac position, that the iPhone did not even try any authentication mechanism. At least that is what it usually means. I have extended logging enabled while we troubleshoot this, but I am getting nothing but that one error.
If I may be so foolish as to offer an analogy, it's kind of like this:
    A person approaches a house.
    They knock on the door.
From inside, they hear, "Who is it?"
    They say nothing.
Again, through the closed door they hear: "Who is it?"
    They still say nothing.
Obviously the door never opens, and the person inside loses interest and stops asking who it is, due to the lack of response from the person outside.
So that's my analogy. I just want this iPhone to TRY to authenticate.

  • [postfix/dovecot] setup a mailserver

    Hi.
I followed this little tutorial (quite old, but seems to be still ok) : http://www.howtoforge.com/arch-linux-ma … nd-dovecot
I did all of it, all my daemons start well, but I don't know what to do; I've to say I didn't understand well when and how I created the accounts, I don't even know if I did it…
Thanks for any help or precision, I'm a bit lost here… :-)

Building a mail server could be a delicate task. So, go step by step.
Decide first, if you want to use VIRTUAL or UNIX users.
Make your SMTP installation work. Test it. Then test it again.
If it works, decide, if you need an IMAP/POP server too. Install it, make it work. Test it. Test it again.
I've had some adventures with postfix/courier-imap/cyrus-sasl lately. If you do not work slowly, nothing will work. Really.
And do not be afraid to read other distro's wiki pages too. It could be helpful.

  • OS X Lion postfix smtpd problems

For the life of me I couldn't get smtpd running correctly on my iMac (brand new SL iMac upgraded to Lion).
Looking at the syslog, I kept getting:
postfix/smtpd[1001]: fatal: open /etc/postfix/submit.cred: No such file or directory
    postfix/master[971]: warning: process /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd pid 1001 exit status 1
postfix/master[971]: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd: bad command startup -- throttling
Upon checking, that /etc/postfix/submit.cred file was missing. Created a blank one. Syslog then showed:
postfix/smtpd[1041]: fatal: unsafe ownership or permissions on /etc/postfix/submit.cred: uid/gid/mode are 0/0/644 should be 0/0/0600
    postfix/master[1035]: warning: process /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd pid 1041 exit status 1
postfix/master[1035]: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/smtpd: bad command startup -- throttling
Did the chmod 0600 on it.
    FINALLY smtpd started accepting connections!
    Syslog still showed a warning:
postfix/smtpd[1420]: warning: no valid hostport|username|password entries in /etc/postfix/submit.cred
So I just commented it out of /etc/postfix/main.cf:
    # (APPLE) Credentials for using URLAUTH with IMAP servers.
    #imap_submit_cred_file = /etc/postfix/submit.cred
    And now all looks good.
Seems this is a new (broken?) option Apple have added to postfix.
Hope this helps someone else avoid the frustration I've been having!!  :-)

Hi, the submit.cred file is NOT a new (broken) Apple option. It has been introduced, instead, with the new versions of PostFix, so you could find it also on Linux or BSD installatios running the latest version of it.
It has been introduced to match the MTA with the RFC4468 (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4468) which describes an extension of the IMAP protocol.
In order to fix the problem your console is displaying, you should:
Create a submit.cred file in /etc/postfix directory (sudo touch /etc/postfix/submit.cred will do).
Create a header for that file: sudo echo "submitcred version 1" >> /etc/postfix/submit.cred
Add as many lines as the number of users you want to enable to submit mail, in the form hostname|user|passwd sudo echo''hostname|username|password" >> /etc/postfix/submit.cred
Give the file the appropriate permissions: sudo chmod 600 /etc/postfix/submit.cred
Once you've done this you could restart postfix and everything sould run smoothly. You should also fine-tune your postfix configuration in order to prevent it to deliver spam or provide security breaches.
    Enjoy.

  • Php & postfix mail problem [solved]

Was having a battle with php mail() and it not wanting to send with postfix.
Struggle ensued, and just as I though I was beaten, a dancing sandwich showed me the light!
this was in my php.ini file..
    sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail
for postfix, this is what you need
    sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i
And there was much rejoicing in the land.

Aug 11 11:52:25 hanna postfix/smtpd[13463]: fatal: incorrect version of Berkeley DB: compiled against 4.3.29, run-time linked against 4.4.20
Within that line the error is. It was due to the fact that some librarys and such had been updated whilst the postfix-mysql hadn't been recompiled to meet these new dependencys or whatever you want to call them. Simple as that, I just got the pkgbuild file for postfix-mysql and remade the package and voila, it works like a charm!

  • Mailman / Postfix aliases problem?

    Hello, all!
I've got mailman running, finally, after many hours of fighting with it. It is now to the point where it will accept new subscribers through the listinfo page, send them their confirmation, and accept a confirmation action by the user on the html page to do so. The list currently only has 2 members - the moderator and one test email account. The server is hosting many virtual domains. The list in question is in one; it is currently the only virt-domain that is using a mailman list.
    However...
Attempts to send from the moderator to the list result in the following:
    <[email protected]>: host
    /var/imap/socket/lmtp[/var/imap/socket/lmtp] said: 550-Mailbox unknown.
Either there is no mailbox associated with this 550-name or you do not have
authorization to see it. 550 5.1.1 User unknown (in reply to RCPT TO
    command)
OK, so it seems to me that Postfix is not correctly figuring out that the listname is not a hosted mailbox, but is indeed a list name, and thus never bothers to send it off to mailman. I'm guessing this means I'm missing 1 little thing or other in postfix's main.cf but I can't figure out what. Help?
    here is my main.cf:

Correct. My domain in question is ryla9810.org which has one alias that forwards to my gmail account (phil@), and I need one mail list with a dozen members (team@). The forward works, but the maillist is causing me grief

  • Postfix Imap problem

I am using Postfix 2.5.5 running on a Mac Pro (Snow Leopard) as a mail server for my very small home network. I use Apple Mail on both the Mac Pro and on an old Powerbook (Leopard) to access my mailbox via Imap. This used to work just fine but in recent months, probably after some upgrade, mail that I have already read (or deleted or replied to) with one computer is not properly marked when I call up the mail queue on the other machine. For example, if I have just read 5 messages on the Powerbook they will show up later as unread on the Mac Pro, and vice versa. I'd be grateful for any advice on fixing this.
    Thanks very much.

  • Postfix Expressions Problem

    I wrote a program for my AP Comp Sci A class that takes a postfix expression (e.g. 32+) and converts it into an infix expression (e.g. 3+2) and then solves it.                          stk.push(stk.pop()*stk.pop());
             return stk.pop();
       }

You don't check for the number of elements in your stack, you just check whether it's empty and, if not, pop 2 elements (though it might be only 1) off it.
Your program looks rather C-ish; equality checking on Strings is done via equals(), compareTo() is, uhm, unconventional. Though you don't need to check Strings at all while you have chars1.
The Integer conversion part could be done this way:
stk.push(new Integer(chars1 - '0'));Edit: apart from these comments, your program works for me with the input "32+".

  • [solved] Postfix smtp filtered to the outside world

    Hi,
I set up postfix+dovecot successfully except postfix smtp. I can't connect to smtp from a remote network. nmap shows:
    25/tcp filtered smtp
When I connect to VPN on the same VPS running postfix, everything works. What could be behind this other than iptables? (I don't have any rules relevant to this set)

  • Php & Postfix

I'm trying to configure my /usr/local/php.ini to allow the mail() command from php to use Postfix as SMTP relay.
All the explanations I found around don't help, maybe I didn't look at the right place.
    Any ideas? or solutions?
    Thierry

    Excellent !!!
the fact was. Everything was ok without any modification of the php.ini file (whaterver the location or type of php configuration), but it is impossible to send a message to an account sitting on the same machine.
I guess this: if you machine ip is 192.168.1.5, this machien host DNS, Apache, Postfix and some user accounts. If you want to send a message to john.smth which is a local user, you would have to mail him from php:
    mail("[email protected]","php message","hello World \n\n");
This doesn't work!! I guess it's a postfix configuration problem and DNS interaction, don't you?
If you just send [email protected] averything is ok.
    Thanks

  • Postfix virus filtering (SOLVED)

I've set up a postfix/dovecot email server, and what I really want to make is virsu scanning for postfix.
I've tried the clamsmtp package from AUR, it did not work.
    I'm open to any ideas
It is solved since a week, I will make a WIKI page - if somebody can point me out how to make it

  • Secure postfix gateway

Im doing this entirely for the masochistic pleasure/learningexercise
I have a cheap small VPS that I want to act as an SMTP relay to forward emails to my own server on a dynamic ip connection (the VPS has a static address). I want it to act as a gateway - so IMAP is on my server, which then forwards to the gateway, which then sends emalis out to the world from my domain name.
    But Ive hit a snag..
I want to secure both servers, so they dont become spam bots and I get black-listed... I was thinking SASL and SSL on both servers, but I cant get my mind around it.
    * The gateway only has postfix. It forwards mail to the host, and the host forwards (outbound) mail to it. Can/should I use SASL here or just SSL?
    * The host has postfix+dovecot. Obviously Ill need SASL for IMAP, and SSL.
    * Presumably Ill need one SSL certificate per server?
Any advice is very much welcome!

The instructions on that web page aren't applicable to your case. Don't follow them.

  • Portable Home Directories in 10.8 Server?

I have a Mac mini Server running 10.6.8. Now that 10.8 is out, Apple will probably stop supporting 10.6 (as is their policy) and that means either slowly eroding security or moving to 10.8. I have been looking at the documentation and it seems underneath it all is still by an large the same basic unix-stuff like postfix, dovecot, a dns system, etc. Giving the lack of support for GUI-managing the more complex setups, I'll probably be doing it command-line (stuff like multiple virtual mail domains, multiple web domains, etc.). Not fun (and a business opportunity for some enterprising software engineer).
But what I haven't been able to see in the documentation or anywhere else is Portable Home Directories. In my current setup, I have a 10.6.8 Server and 10.7 clients. On these clients is a single local administrator acocunt and the rest are 'managed mobile accounts'. These are local acocunts. They work when away form the network on which the server is, but when in range of the server, the server may push settings and stuff. And on login/logout and when connected to the LAN and during work, the home directory of the user is constantly synchronized with a copy of the user's home directory on the server. This means my users can take any computer and get their own account and a synchronized copy of their home directory. They can also take a laptop off line for a while and when they return to my LAN (either physically or by VPN), any changes will be synced. This is a sweet setup and it works with 10.7 clients and 10.6.8 server.
But what I haven't been able to find if this will still work with 10.8 Server. I have looked at teh 10.8 Server documentation and haven't found anything about it. Will it still work somehow and if not, is there a good alternative?

    Gerben Wierda wrote:
Or: you create the users anew in the network directory, you replace their home directories with the content of what is on the MacBook (TDM is your friend) and do the chmod. Easier still.
That way, I suggest the migration in that way; because, you can test everything out before the data gets moved over. There's nothing like something going wrong in the setup/migration, and you have to do it all over again.
Kirk, you can always put the Home directories/folder on an external. But if you do, you'll probably want to run this command in Terminal:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount AutomountDisksWithoutUserLogin -bool YES
That sets the system-wide setting to mount external HDs on startup. The default behavior  in OS X, probably around 10.3 onward (but Apple may have flip-flopped on this), is to mount externals on user GUI-login, not on startup like internal HDs. The default behavior is a huge problem with network users, whose home directories reside on the external, since the external on GUI login often mounts "too late" and new "phantom" home directories are created (along with warning messages that the home directory can't be found) and you sometimes get duplicate mount points. In short, the default behavior creates a bit of mess. To spare you some frustration, run that command, which will mount the externals on startup, so the home folders are always available.
It's also handy if you plan on creating other shares on the external; it prevents some flaky behavior.
Gerben's "general description" can be applied to Lion and Mountain Lion, although with Mountain Lion you have fewer tools, and you'll often be working in Server.app rather than some of the older tools like Server Admin.
    Again, basically you need to:
    (1) Setup file sharing, where you designate a directory/folder as a share to hold the network home directories. On the default install, Apple makes /Users a share, and you could (similar to what Gerben did) use that to hold not only local accounts' but also the network accounts' home directories. In that setup all users' home directories reside in the same place. All you have to do then is check the box "Make available for home directories over" and leave "AFP". See below; note the very last checkbox; that needs to be checked:
I preferred to keep the local and network users separate, so I actually use a different share for the network users, and not /Users. If you go that route, pay attention to the permissions, it's somewhat easy to get them wrong. I think I cheated and used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the /Users directory to another HD, then just renamed the directory. FYI you're actually not seeing this in these screen shots, since I'm using a "fresh install" virtual machine to make the screen shots.
Also if you don't need it, I'd probably uncheck "Share with Windows clients (SMB).
    2. You need to setup Open Directory, so you can manage Network Users. Since you want portable home directories, then you might consider using Profile Manager (introduced in Lion Server), which is Apple's latest tool for that. You can also download separate Workgroup Manager as well. Not sure which is better, or exactly why there are both. I think the documention indicated for older pre-Lion OSes, Workgroup Manager is still around.
2a - If you go straight to Profile Manager, and set it up, it will first make you setup Open Directory, then the rest of the setup for Profile Manager itself.
2b - Or you can always "two-step", first setup Open Directory, then later if you want "Profile Manager".
    3. Once you have OD (step 2), and the share setup for network home directories (step), you use Server.app to create the network users, and assign their home directory to the share not local. Note the entry "Home Folder"; use the pull-down menu to select your share. See below.
If you forget to set the Home Folder, you can always "edit" the user and change the Home Folder to the share, and not Local Only.
    4. To get portable Home directories, I'm pretty sure you're going to have to setup and activate Profile Manager or use Workgroup Manager. Sorry not much details I can provide there, I've only played with it a bit, and was planning on upgrading my MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion before giving it a go again.
