Power Query Update 2.16.3785.242 (64-bit) has Corrupted Excel

The most recent update to Power Query has rendered Excel useless.  Any use of the Ctrl key (copying, pasting, etc.) will cause Excel to crash and restart.
A co-worker had the same problem yesterday and we were perplexed in its origin, though it became clear the update was the source after updating this morning.
We need a fix ASAP!

Hi W. If you can still repro the crashes, can you please do the following to get a crash dump and then send it to us? (You can use the Send a Frown functionality on the working version of PQ.)
Edit the registry, open the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting and change the DWORD value ForceQueue to 1
Open %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue in Windows Explorer to monitor it
Reproduce the crash – at this point something should appear briefly in the ReportQueue folder
Thanks,
Ehren

  • Refresh Pivot Bug in Power Query version 2.16.3822.242

I have an Excel file with Power Query and several Pivot Tables built from the Power Query data. The Pivots are built from the table loaded to a worksheet, and there is a timeline date slicer connected to all those various Pivot Tables.
In build 2.16.3822.242, refreshing the Pivot Table (either by right-click/Refresh, or programmatically via macro) causes the date timeline slicer to disappear (literally be deleted from the sheet).  The Pivot Refresh succeeds fine.
This does not occur when using Power Query Version: 2.16.3785.242. So for the time being, my only workaround is to avoid installing the newer build.
Any ideas what's causing it?  I told my coworker (the primary user of the file) that she could still use the file and go filter every pivot's date range separately, rather than the slicer, but that is laborious and for now she is just going to remote-desktop
into a computer that doesn't have build 3822 installed yet.

Hey Ed, I apologize for un-proposing your answer so quick, I was on my Windows Phone but the forum loading spinner wouldn't leave the text entry field, so I couldn't input a reply until I got home.
I actually found a solution just today. This may not be the 'only' solution, but it worked well.  When I had previously thought I had a solution, it only 'worked' because my subsequent refresh after making the table change didn't add any new rows of
data (all the rows it would have returned that day were already there).  Today I made the change and then refreshed, and the new rows were formatted as the Power Query intended them to be.
The settings I used were to set the table to "do not preserve formatting" and to "overwrite existing cells for new data, clear unused cells". Now my inserted Power Query table is plain white (no banded lines or colors), but I don't care
because it's on a hidden sheet that no one will ever see.
Here's the table settings that seemed to work well for me.
And to be honest (although I haven't extensively tested), I think this was only a problem if the table was created using an old version of Power Query, then refreshed with the new version.  Anyway, now I can easily refresh my Query and then the Pivot
    from it without trouble.
And since I suck at brevity:  I also think it'd be beneficial for me to re-create these workbooks and have the Power Query only add the data to the data model, and source the Pivot directly from that, rather than indirectly source the pivot from a populated
table. Basically save a step, and then the Pivot will refresh together with the connection, rather than having to be refreshed separately after the query is done.
In any case, I'm loving this tool and I'm practically a Power Query evangelist to every other department, because it empowers the knowledge worker to investigate data without waiting weeks for a DBA to have time to write a query and send results.  Plus
we power this awesome real-time performance dashboard showing live KPIs of 15 metrics, and ditched our Domo.com account, saving upwards of 100k per year, just by using Power Query. Using nothing but plain Excel and Power Query, it publishes the graphics to
our intranet and TVs around the builds live all day. It's amazing.

  • Power Query Update breaks connection to PostgreSQL database

After the update to Power Query 2.11.3625.144, we can't connect our PostgreSQL database anymore.
    Error message is:
DataSource.NotFound: PostgreSQL: Unable to find a database provider with invariant name 'Npgsql'.
This error may have been the result of provider-specific client software being required but missing on this computer.  To download client software for this provider, visit the following site and choose at minimum 'Npgsql version 2.0.12': http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=282716
Readding the Npgsql driver doesn't solve the issue. Has the version requirement changed with the Power Query update? Or is PostgreSQL connectivity completely broken?

    Hmm,
If I add the line, I get the following error message in Power Query:
'Npgsql' returned the error: 'Unrecognized element. (C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Config\machine.config line 169)'.
This error may have been the result of provider-specific client software being required but missing on this computer.  To download client software for this provider, visit the following site and choose at minimum 'Npgsql version 2.0.12': http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=282716
The code in the machine config looks like this:
      <system.data>
            <DbProviderFactories />
            <add description=".Net Framework Data Provider for Postgresql Server" type="Npgsql.NpgsqlFactory, Npgsql, Version=2.0.12.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=5d8b90d52f46fda7" name="Npgsql Data Provider" invariant="Npgsql" support="FF"/>
        </system.data>
The node seems to be empty by default. Can it be that the surrounding stuff has to be differently written in that case?

As you've noticed, there is a mistake in this blog post and the link was accidentally left out. You can still see the link on that page by looking in the right column for "Download Power Query for Excel." Alternatively you can search Bing for: download
power query. Or you can just click right here:

  • Can't install the June (2014) Power Query Update

Hi, I can't seem to install the June update.  The MSI file does not run.  I'm using the Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus product and update 15.0.4631.1002 32-bit.  All office programs are closed.  Any ideas?
    Thanks Graham

Do you have the same problem with the July release that was just announced?

  • Power Query SCCM Installation

I have been trying to create a SCCM application which will install Power Query after installing MSOffice Pro Plus 2013. On a machine which has the Office, I can manually install Power Query, however, silent and administrative installs do not work.
Has anyone successfully install Power Query through System Center as a system application (no user interaction)?  If so, what am I missing.
    Steps taking so far:
Downloaded latest Power Query Software: "PowerQuery_2.13.3688.242 (32-bit) [en-US].msi"
Created a new application from the MSI.
    Created a deployment.
Tested deployment on Windows 8.1 Machine. Failed to install.
Tested deployment on Windows 7 Machine. Failed to install.
Tried on both Windows 7 and 8.1 Machines to install by command line (admin command prompt) with /a or /I with /qn and will not install.
In event viewer return code is installation success or error status: 0.
Verified com add-in is not present.
Tried on Windows 7 and 8.1 machines installing with no flags and installs successfully.

    Hi,
I've tried to install PQ through SCCM it failed. I'm using command: msiexec /i "PowerQuery_2.16.3785.242
    (64-bit) [en-us].msi" /q ACCEPT_EULA=1
This command works when I run cmd as Administrator on local machine (non-domain joined). But when cmd runs as a regular user (this user is local admin) it fails. SCCM tries to run it as local admin.
SCCM gives following error: 0x643 (1603).
Google says that it is related with elevation. Note: Run as Administrator feature blocked on client machines through GPO.
    Could someone help me?

  • How do I Send in a value to the SQL Query Expression's variable created using Declare in Power Query

I have gone through the other posts where in a parameter is sent to query created by power query but my ask is a bit different.
I am using a sql query to retrieve data using Power query which has 2 variables declared in the DECLARE section in the query.
    Ex:
    declare @Name varchar(1000)
    SET @Name= 'Alpha'
    declare @location nvarchar(1000)
    SET @location= 'Bravo'
    Select * from Infotable where Name = @Name and location = @location.
Now in the following query I would want to send in the values for  the declared variables using a table in my worksheet. I have followed the stuff present in the following post
    http://blog.oraylis.de/2013/05/using-dynamic-parameter-values-in-power-query-queries/
but when using the value name (let Name_parameter = Excel.Currentworkbook(), Name_Value = Name_Parameter [0][value]) in the Advance Editor as mentioned in the above post I am being thrown an error stating  Name_Value column doesn't exist.
I am having a tough time figuring out what the problem could be..

  • Treat one power query table as source for another

    Hi,
I have a Power Query Table named as Final Table - this table has inturn been loaded to the Data Model.  I would like to use this Table (Final Table) as a source for creating another Power Query Table (I want to perform further actions on the
Final Table to create yet another Table).  So I just want to know what I should specify in the Source (the first line after the Let statement) in the Advanced Editor.
I do not see any option in the Power Query Ribbon to create an existing Power Query Table as a source.
    Thank you.
Regards, Ashish Mathur Microsoft Excel MVP www.ashishmathur.com

You can just use the query name in your new expression. Since it has a space, write #"Final Table" whenever you refer to it.
(Note that you probably don't need to load this table to the Data Model, but only the one which includes all your transformations. To unload the first table, open Workbook Queries pane select Final Table and after right click, select "Load To".
In the Load To dialog uncheck the Load to Data Model option).
    Example:
    let
    source=#"Final Table"
    in source

  • Power Query website with multiple pages

    Hi There,
Is there a way to use Power Query to extract data from a website that has multiple pages when the URL does not seem to have a page number parameter?
See the bottom table (Past events) in this site:
    http://www.sqlsaturday.com/events.aspx
There are multiple pages, but the link to each page is just something like: javascript:__doPostBack('ctl00$ContentPlaceHolder1$GridView2','Page$2')
Thanks in advance for your help

I have in the past delved down in to the AJAX URL syntax for refreshes done that way. It is often actually easier to consume such response formats in Power Query.

  • Hide the update power query notification

I've recently installed Power Query for Excel 2013 Pro Plus. (not click-to-run)
Power Query has been updated already and now this message is appearing on all the user's computers.
Any ideas as to how I can hide this message using the registry and/or group policy?

There is no way to hide the notification, though I believe the most recent version will annoy you less often than previous ones. When you go to the "About" prompt on the Power Query tab, what version number does it show?

  • Using Power Query to Update Project Custom Fields

Is Power Query in Excel 2013 able to do Bi-directional updates for updating Enterprise Custom Project fields in PWA 2013?

So to update data you would need to either use one of the following APIs:
    PSI
    CSOM
    JSOM
    JSOM REST
Always try and use one of the client side API's if possible (PSI is a server side API). I'm not sure you will be able to do this via Excel though, I would look at a custom app , web part etc.

    Thanks!

it was included in the Power Query version released in September 2014. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft Power Query for Excel DisableUpdateNotification dword 1 will disable the update notification.

    Hi Yoshihiro,
Can you share an example of the things you are doing in Power Pivot? There are some operations that prevent the query from being refreshed in Power Query; this is not ideal so we are currently working on fixing it.
    Thanks for your feedback.
