Yes.  You can use one of a higher wattage, just not a lower wattage.

What's the power Adapter for Macbook pro 13inch Mid 2012 with core i-7, 2.9ghz, 8Gb ram?
AFAIK it should be a 60wat Megasafe power adapter.
But mine shipped with a 45Watt Megasafe. I got it as a Gift from my friend.
    Thanks in Advance.

This should be my Adapter right?
    Yes.
There is a drawback in addition to taking a longer time to charge up your MBP.  In unusual instances when using your MBP with power adapter attached, and running a very heavy load on the CPU/GPU, the MBP will require additional electrical resources in addition to what the power adapter can provide.  It will then draw upon the battery.  What this means is that using a 45 watt adapter, these conditions are more likely to occur.
Using a 45 watt adapter should not harm your MBP as such.
    Ciao.

  • What product can I buy that will provide portable power to my MacBook Pro and iPhone and iPad when I am flying?

What product can I buy that will supply portable power to my MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad when I am flying?
I recently was on an extended trip and the port for charging at my seat was not working.

    Unfortuntly you can't.
The Apple Airline adapter is only meant to keep a fully charged battery from draining, however with newer computers requiring more power, they tend to drain the battery AND the power at the same time, thus require more power hook up without the computer running to charge the battery.
Since your iPhone and iPad charge off USB, that's going to drain the MacBook Pro battery as well.
To generate enough power to charge all three will require a portable generator which of course can't be used on a plane.
The best you can do is have all three charged up before you board the plane, and use each for as long as you can.

Also, I apparently have to replace my battery. Could the problem have any relevance to a dead battery?

Have you held the power button down for 10+ seconds?  That should turn it off.

  • Won't power up -- 17" MacBook Pro Early 2008 2.5GHz MB166LL/A MacBookPro4,1 Apple Model #A1261

I have a 17" MacBook Pro Early 2008 2.5GHz MB166LL/A MacBookPro4,1 Apple Model #A1261. I bought this used last year, and installed one of OWC's 1TB 2.5" Hybrid HD/SSD drives in it last January. No problems whatsoever until the past 2 weeks, when I started having intermittent black screens (NOT display sleep) -- sometimes the black screen would disappear by itself, sometimes I had to (Power button) shut down, and when I restarted, everything was OK. Until yesterday.
First let me note that, because I usually use the MacBook Pro in the same area in my house, I usually leave it plugged into the MagSafe power cube, and often just close the lid and put it to sleep, instead of going through start-up every time I need to access it. BTW, battery (NuPower) shows 5 solid green dots and does not seem to be a problem
Night before last, I shut down the MB Pro, and closed the lid. Yesterday, I opened up the MB Pro, and hit the power button. All I got was a brief, non-pulsing white light on the display-locking/“sleep light” button, and a sort of graunchy whisper from what sounded to me like the optical drive, NO screen activity whatsoever, and the “sleep light” went out within 3 or 4 seconds. Could hear NO HD spin-up sounds.
Tried everything I knew (not much), including disconnecting the MagSafe charger and removing the battery completely, letting it sit a few minutes, replacing battery and charger, and powering up. Same nothing, just another very brief whisper of activity from the optical drive. Being something of an “I’ll try anything, no matter how dumb it seems” idiot, I put a known, working, burned data CD-R in the optical drive. Removed the charger and battery again, waited, put everything back in. Tried to power up. Still nothing, same brief whisper from the optical drive, but the MB Pro would STILL not start up, the CD-R wouldn’t spin up OR eject, and I heard nothing from the hard drive, even with my ear ON the metal right over the drive.
My next “don’t-really-want-to-do-it” step is to remove the 1TB drive, replace it with the original 250GB drive, see if that works, and, as I have a “Newer Technology” Voyager S3 bare drive (works with both 2.5” and 3.5”) USB dock connected to my main Mac (a mid-2011 iMac, 2.7GHz Core i5, OS X 10.9.3), I’ll try using that to check the hybrid drive.
I’ve been a Mac-only user since 1989, and somehow this doesn’t seem like a drive problem. I’ve tried every OS X keyboard shortcut on the “OS X keyboard shortcuts” page, and the “sleep light” always comes on for a couple seconds, then goes out, the screen never even shows a flicker of life, and the HD NEVER spins up.
Can the forum please clue me in with any tricks I haven’t tried yet?
    Thanks
    Bart Brown

Thanks for the quick response. However, none of the following have worked:
Have you tried SMC and PRAM resets?
As usual, "sleep" light briefly illuminated -- 2-4 seconds -- then went out. No startup, no chime(s), no screen, no keyboard illumination, no HD spin-up.
Also try an Apple Hardware Test.
Same as above. Nada. "Mac NoteBook and Desktop computers shipping with OS X 10.7 or later have a partition on the hard drive or flash storage that contains AHT" -- since I can't get the drive to spin up, I can't access that partition... or anything else.
You may need the #2 installation disk.
Well, there I have TWO problems:
One is that I bought this MBPro on eBay, and received no disks -- it came with OS X 10.9.x installed (and is now at OS X 10.9.3). Is there any way to get “retail” install disks that will work with this MacBook Pro?
Second is that there's a data CD in the optical drive. Because the MBPro won't boot, I can't get the data CD out even if I had the 2nd Install DVD. Any way I can get this data CD out -- hatpin, barbecue skewer, fencing foil, sledgehammer?
I talked with OWC, from whom I bought the hybrid Seagate HDD/SSD 1TB drive last November. We tried a few ideas he had — mostly the same as those suggested by “Oglethorpe” (no relation to “Ogie” Oglethorpe in “Slapshot,” I hope!) — none of which worked, as I’ve already indicated above.
My last-ditch effort-of-desperation is to remove the hybrid Seagate HDD/SSD 1TB drive, and put in the original 250GB drive (never throw away a good drive!), and see if the MBPro returns from the dead. I will also put the hybrid Seagate HDD/SSD 1TB bare drive into my Newer Technologies Voyager S3 bare-drive dock, which takes 2.5” and 3.5” drives, and see if there’s a problem with the hybrid Seagate HDD/SSD 1TB drive. While no longer under warranty with OWC/MacSales, it IS still under a 2-year warranty with Seagate.
    Any other suggestions gladly entertained.
    Thanks again.

  • Power on closed Macbook Pro 9,1?

Will the Apple Wireless Keyboard power on a closed MacBook Pro? If not, are there any aftermarket keyboards that will?

    RE: SATA Bus speed:
Rotating drives available today, whatever their SATA spec, can source data off the spinning platters no faster than about 125MBytes/sec.
SATA 3 is rated at 6G bits/sec, which theoretically is about 750 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 2 is rated at 3G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 375 Mega Bytes/sec
SATA 1 is rated at 1.5G bits/sec, which is theoretically about 187.5 Meg Bytes/sec
None of the SATA Busses is a bottleneck for consumer Rotating drives you can buy today. Trying to speed up the SATA Bus will not provide any real-world performance increases for Rotating Drives.
Even most common SSD drives are not bottlenecked by SATA 2.
    • Do not pay extra for SATA-3 over SATA-2.
    • DO pay extra for a larger Disk Cache, it will make a modest difference.
    • DO pay extra for an SSD over a rotating drive, it will make a difference.

  • Is it possible to fix the cable of the Power Adapter for MacBook Pro?

The cable of my power adaptor for my Macbook pro is broken, but the adatpor itself is fine, so I am wondering if it possible to replace that cable.

    Where's it broken?
If you have enough space between the connector and/or the case.
Here's one of mine that I repaired:
There's only 2 conductors in there. One acts as a shield.
So 3 pieces of shrink tubing. Prepare the conductors so you can proceed as follows.
    Solder the inner conductor together.
Slide one piece of shrink tubing to down to cover that splice completely - shrink.
    Solder the outer shield together.
Cover w/ the second piece of shrink tubing - shrink.
Cover the entire repair w/ shrink tubing - shrink.

  • Where to get an extra power cord for Macbook Pro

I purchased an additional 85w Mag Safe power adapter for my Macbook Pro assuming it would come with both the adapter and the extension cord. However, I only received the adapter with the cable that attaches to the computer. After researching this item it seems that the extension cord is not available, either with or separate from the adapter. This cord was included with the adapter in the new computer box. Does anyone know how/where I can obtain this extension cord to use with my second adapter?

My adaptor fried itself in under six months and apple charged me $105 for the replacement. I was so disappointed that they charged me. Thought everything was warranteed.
    Amy-
I've had my MBPro for almost four months (love it. A few days ago, I thought I noticed the green light dimmer than usual. It continued to dim for 36-48 hours until it finally disappeared. No amber, either. I can use the machine on AC power, but the battery will not charge (it's at 82%, period). I tried everything first: reset SMC, reset PMU, safe mode. No luck.
Called Apple Tech Support yesterday (Sunday), explained the situation, and after very few questions the Rep said they'd ship me a replacement AC adapter & cord via FedEx Overnight (arriving Tuesday). He said a prepaid FedEx shipping label will be included so I can return the failed unit.
NOTE: I do NOT have Extended AppleCare (i.e., my 90-days of free telephone support has expired). But because this is a hardware problem, it is covered under a 1-year warranty on hardware.
Something's not right, Amy. Definitely call Apple Support (800-275-2273 in the US) - report my experience if you wish - and ask them why your case was any different than mine (it wasn't). (I wonder ... Was it an Apple Store that made the original "you have to pay" decision? Maybe someone just didn't understand all the terms of the warranty?)
    Hope this helps.
    Good luck,
    Ken

  • Power up Issue macbook Pro A1175? (please help)

I turn on the power and the chime sounds but the screen stays black and there is no hard drive activity. The indicater light on the front of the computer lights up: the light thats on the button that opens the laptop.
The light on the battery also turns on but there is no HDD lighting up and no activity. This issue started this morning as last night I turned off the Macbook pro to shut it down and it powered off correctly. Before I shut it down the programs that were running on it was Photo shop, Safari, Itunes - Itunes was playing some music but it was on pause for several hours, and Furcadia. I shut them all down closing each application individually and then shut down the book pro. it's a 15 inch mac book pro. S/N W872904NXAH

if there is any alternitives id like to know. my gf really needs this laptop back as she needs it for college.,, Id hate to have to send it in to apple.. it would take weeks ,,, she doesnt have weeks and she needs her data now.
Also is it possible to hook up the hard drive in the laptop to another computer running Leopard? Or is it possible to use Linux Kabuntu to use DDR Rescue the data or extract it?
The hard drive is not responding to anything and someone told my GF that it might be a hard drive related issue.

I am adding a other piece of information that any viewer must see: I have checked out the help areas of the macbook pro and I tried to find step guides in the Resetting the PMU for IBook or MacBook models here is the link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431?viewlocale=en_US
when I try to find my model it is not listed there nore anywere else on step guides to reset the PMU I have already reseted the VRAM and such but still to no avail it has failed to resolve my issue does anyone know how to reset the PMU On a Powerbook Pro A1175? Its a 15 inch that came out 2007 of June 5th. Mid year 07.
I found my specs and here it is :

  • Macbook power adapater with Macbook Pro...??

    Hi guys,
So I just got home for the holidays and realized I forgot my power adapter for my *Macbook Pro*. However, my dad has a Macbook. I know they're not the exact same adapter, but is it a problem if I use his adapter with my laptop?
    Thanks!

If the battery is fully charged it will power it (or if it is not running it will charge it a bit slower than normal) e.g. the 60W will be enough to do one or the other.
Search here for the other 1000 times this has been asked.
Lower wattage = charge or run not both, higher wattage = both and in the case of a MacBook with a Pro adapter, it won't catch on fire (which is a common theme as people confuse power adapters with light bulbs in terms of power consumption).
Searching google will come up with 10,000 more confirmations of this.
