PowerBook 3400c

I just got a PowerBook 3400c from a friend of mine. It works great but wont connect to the internet via my cable in the rear of the laptop to my cable modem.
running OS 8.1 and has alot of junk on it.
My question is can the harddrive be formated and a newer OS installed?
Is it even worth it?
Thanks for any suggestions, I have never had a mac before and dont know if this old laptop is worth messing with.

Hi Dave,
Install a suitable web browser (there are not many to choose from; iCab could be one alternative), an email program and perhaps an FTP client.
If you only have access to a Windows PC with an Internet connection at this point, you could transfer any downloaded files as they are (do not decode or decompress anything on the PC) to the PowerBook via CD-R or PC-formatted floppies. Once on the Mac, use StuffIt Expander for the decoding/decompression (drag .bin, .hqx or .sit files onto the StuffIt Expander program icon).
If you do not have StuffIt Expander for Macintosh, try this: Use a PC to download the MACDISK.EXE file here. Prepare an empty PC-formatted 1.44 MB diskette via FORMAT A: in DOS or the full formatting option under Windows. Launch the MACDISK.EXE program on the PC. Follow the on-screen directions. The result will be a Mac-formatted disk with a ready-to-use StuffIt Expander 4.0.1 installer.
I could not find exact instructions for System 7.6.1 at the Road Runner site, but with a bit of help from Windows tutorials (here) and the Windows TCP/IP information in the SB5100 series user guide (here), I would suggest the following to begin with: Open the TCP/IP control panel. Make sure that a connection via Ethernet has been chosen. Configure to use a DHCP server. Leave any remaining fields empty. Close the control panel (the upper left box). Choose to save the settings.

  • How do I transfer files from a PowerBook 3400c to a MacBook Pro

The subject header says it all.
I've got an old Mac PowerBook 3400c (OS 8.6) and a MacBook Pro (OS 10.4.8) and I'll like to transfer files from the 3400c to the Pro. How do I do this?
    Thanks.

    lol, I had a 1400 a few years back.
Honestly, your best bet is to email them to an account you can access with your Macbook ...if you don't have a lot of course. Other option would be to save to floppy's and find a 'USB powered' floppy drive to get them to your book - textedit should be able to open any word files you have saved (not the formatting though).
I found this from this Apple site...
Mac OS X 10.4 and later don't support Personal File Sharing (or other AFP) over Appletalk, though by initiating the connection from the opposite direction you could still achieve an IP connection from a Mac OS 8 computer to a sharing Mac OS X computer.
    Looks a little complicated though.
    Good Luck!

  • Problems installing bigger hdd in Powerbook 3400C

I have a Powerbook 3400C. I want to install Linux on it to try to gain some functionality from it.Yellowdog seems to be my best bet, but there's isn't enough room on the installed 1.3 gig hard drive for the needed OS 9 and Yellowdog installations.
I have an 8gig drive I pulled out of my Wallstreet powerbook.
I swapped the drives, and while I could install the Mac OS..8, 8.5, and 9 on the 8gig, I could not boot from the drive...it would give me error 10 errors, with or without extensions turned on (when booting from the drive).
(I was able to install a bare bones, no extensions version of 8.5 and boot with that, but i had no other functionalities, and I couldn't do the same with 9.)
Putting the 1.3 gig drive back in, I had no problems.
According to [www.insanely-great.com] the drive should qualify (I assume it's an EIDE, not ATA6 since the Wallstreet lists EIDE and i could install to the drive from the CD.--A web search on the drive confirms it's EIDE/ATA3)
    Anyone done this..have thoughts..advice...prayers?

    Todd,
The Wallstreet HD should work fine. Since you were able to boot the 3400 with a minimum install of 8.5, that demonstrates the soundness of the hardware.
    Two suggestions:
    - Are you installing from retail MacOS System CDs or using some other method of placing the OSes on the HD?
    - Boot to your MacOS System CD > use the Drive Setup on the CD > check the 'zero all data' under Initialization Options to thoroughly wipe the HD. When this is completed, run Drive Setup's Test Disk to make sure you have no bad blocks that have not been spared or reallocated. If the test is negative, run 'zero all data' and Test Disk again. Once the HD is pronounced healthy, you can initialize/partition the HD as you see fit.

I do not know if the above will solve the problem, but if the HD is healthy and you are installing an OS from retail CDs (OS 9.1 is latest version the 3400 supports), it should work fine.
There is a limitation when using an HD larger than 4GB in the 3400, but I doubt it will affect you:

  • Powerbook 3400c-ram or computer issue?

hi everyone, a while back i bought a powerbook 3400c for cheap on craigslist. great machine but when i looked at the info i saw it had only 16 megs of ram. i checked ebay to upgrade and i almost fainted at the prices for 'vintage' ram. so found a 64mg ram card (ended up being the wrong kind-doh) and opened up the mac. lo and behold there was a 128 mg card already installed-but the powerbook doesn't recognize it. i tried removing and reseating it- no go. i know the obvious solution would be to get another ram card and test that but given the ram prices and the fact that i don't know if it's a computer or ram card issue, is there something i could try to test/solve/workaround before i shell out the big bucks? thanks in advance

Something to try. Remove the RAM module and using a rubber eraser, gently erase the RAM electrical contacts. There may be a corrosive film on the contacts that is preventing electrical contact.
Don't know what OS is on the PB, but you could try using DIMM First Aid (runs on OS 9 & below).

  • PowerBook 3400c Boot Problem

Christmas of '04 i got a powerbook 3400c it worked great until a while back.
the problem is when you turn it on you see the pointer and sometimes but very rarley you see the floppy disk with the blinking question mark.
please help me with this problem because i need this laptop to work so that I don't have to let my younger annoying brother use(but really destroy) my iBook.

    apr34,
"problem is when you turn it on you see the pointer and sometimes but very rarley you see the floppy disk with the blinking question mark"
The last laptop I was asked to fix would not show the startup folder with the question mark. Turns out they had the screen brightness turned up so high that they could not see the startup screen. Adjust your brightness control and see if the screen shows what is happening.
If you see the question mark, that means that the computer cannot find a startup disk. If you do not have a startup floppy or CD, you will need to buy one or make one. What do you have to work with?

  • PowerBook 3400c CD Drive Problems

hello there, just recently i bought a PowerBook 3400 (240 mhz) with no os and the 12x CD ROM. I then swaped the hard drive for one with a copy of Mac OS 8.5.1, from my PB 5300. The problem is when the CD drive is inserted the computer hangs at the happy mac. The only time it will boot is if the floppy drive from the 5300 is inserted or nothing at all. I have tried zapping the PRAM and nvram and nothing is allowing me to use the CD drive. Do I have to make a fresh install?
    thanks for helping in advance

You may need the Apple CD driver extension that might not be on the 5300 HDD. Also There were some file access extensions that are needed for some disks. You need an Mac installation disk or find another similar vintage PB and copy them from the extensions folder to a floppy and use it.
FYI since these older PBs use SCSI  connections you can't hot swap expansion bay devices. You have to shut down and replace item then restart.

  • Powerbook 3400 display problem.

Everything was fine yesterday. But today, the 3400 had a new problem. The display has raised up (half an inch) and I can no longer see the top menu bar. The bottom half inch is black.
So far, I have tried the following:
Checked the appearance control panel to make sure a picture is not covering anything.
    Checked display settings.
    Enabled 9.1 base extension set.
Trashed any preference files that were modified between yesterday and today.
Zapped the pram and rebuilt the desktop.
Ran First aid from start up CD.
None of that helped, so I performed a clean install back to OS 9.04. and the problem still remained. Next, I opened the unit up and removed the keyboard. Then, removed the brightness and speaker grill and reseated the ribbon connections and pressed down firmly. All to no avail,
so I initialized the drive and again did a clean install, but that did not work either.
This forum has saved the 3400 in the past, and hopefully it can save it again. As always, any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • OS 8 won't install On New Hard Drive

I bought a new 4GB hard drive from Betamacs.com for my 3400c Powerbook. When the full install version OS 8 disc was booted, I found that I could not install the OS 8. The following statement came up in the install window:
A valid destination volume can't be found. To continue process, mount a valid volume for software installation"
Can anyone tell me what to do next? Any help is appreciated!
Powerbook 3400c   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier   144 MB RAM

If the new hard disk shows up in the Finder, click on it and choose Erase Disk from the Special menu. If you are booted from an 8.1 or newer CD and are going to install 8.1 or newer, you should choose Mac OS Extended as the format. Otherwise, format it as a Mac disk. If you get a message that the disk is locked, open the Drive Setup application in the CD's Utilities folder and use the Functions menu to unlock the disk.

  • Installation on a B&W G3 with Stock 16 Meg Video

This is one of those cases where when you boot off of the installation DVD you get the wonderful greyscale colors. I'm just wondering if there is any fix to this. I do know that if you install 10.3 and then install the 10.3.9 update, the driver is installed and you get your colors back, but before I invest the time into it, I want to make sure I'm not wasting my time.
    Thanks in advance.

    Obsolete question.

  • What about the Mac OS 9.2 from Mac OS X

Do you think I can install Mac OS 9.2 directly from the second Mac OSX CD on a PowerBook 3400c with 2gb HD and 80MB of RAM?
I'm asking because my friend got rid of his Mac and gave me his Mac OS X CD's and since, I know I can't install X on my machine, maybe the 9.2 would do...
Or would that require Mac OS 9 helper?

Hi, Prosis. I suspect the CDs given to you will be of no value at all with your PB 3400. No retail (universal) OS X installer disc set includes an installer for OS 9. The only Mac OS X installer CD sets that include installers for OS 9.x are model-specific installers, and none of them is specific to a PB 3400. I think it very unlikely that you will be able to start your computer up from any CD in such a set. Even if you're able to do so, I doubt very much that an OS 9 installer designed for some other Mac model will install a functional OS 9.0.x or 9.1 — let alone OS 9.2.2, which is unsupported on your computer.
OS 9 Helper is only useful for applying the OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 downloadable updaters to an already-installed OS 9.1. It does not make possible any other method of installing any version of OS 9 from any source disc.
There is no way to install a bootable OS 9.2.2 directly from any CD on any Mac, except from an installer CD that is specific to that Mac model and was originally shipped with it.

  • Should I repair an Ibook logic board

I can have a 12 inch ibook 1.2ghz if I pay to repair it. It was just 14 months old, had been treated with great respect, when the logic board failed. Needless to say its owner had not purchased any extended warranty. Its owner purchased a new macbook and put the ibook in a drawer because he decided it was not worth the repair. I would use this ibook to replace my old Powerbook 3400c that died finally. I see on the forums that logic board failure is a problem with ibooks and that many people replace one only to have it fail. My question is whether it is worth replacing this ibook logic board? Is there a generic problem with the reliability of these logic boards, so that subsequent failure is a hit or miss thing? Or does their failure result from other factors so that an ibook that has one logic board fail may have an underlying cause that will lead to subsequent failures? Is this computer worth saving?

I see on the forums that logic board failure is a problem with ibooks and that many people replace one only to have it fail.Although there have been some failures the absolute majority of iBook G4 users have not had any type of logic board failure.
Is there a generic problem with the reliability of these logic boards...
    No
    Is this computer worth saving?
You will need to look at the cost of replacing the logic board versus buying a new/refurbished iBook G4 or new MacBook.

  • Kanga- Did I pay too much?

Hi. I just bought a Powerbook 3500 with a 250MHz processor, a 7Gig Hard drive, a 20X cd drive, an AC adapter, a bookendz docking station, and 64MB of ram for $26.00 + $20.00 shipping. Did I pay to much for this machine?
Also, I have a few questions.
the battery is dead, where can i get a new one for cheap?
does it have an ethernet port, or just 56k?
and what kind of ram does it use? i cant settle for 64MB.

You did not pay too much, you got too much. At least 100 too much. You specified 3500. Do you mean you got a PowerBook 3400? The specs for that model are here:
112393- Macintosh PowerBook 3400c/180: Technical Specifications
The 10BaseT Ethernet port is listed as optional on the /180 model, standard on the rest.
You can't get a new battery for cheap. Any battery made by Apple is now quite old. You may be able to get a serviceable used battery for cheap. You will have to shop hard for aftermarket RAM and batteries.
RAM is available here (battery, too):
