Powerbook and leopard

Has anyone upgraded to leopard on a powerbook? Mine is a 1.5GHz, 15 inch with 2 gig of RAM and I'm considering making the change. Just curious to know how leopard runs compared to tiger.
Many thanks
Darryn

I just updated my PoweBook G4, from Panther (It's my first update since I got my PowerBook in March of 05). I'm impressed, it runs faster than I thought it would. I originally had only 1G of memory, but if I had a lot of windows open, I was getting tight on memory. I also noticed that if the hard drive was being accessed a lot (Like during initial log in), the system couldn't keep up with the mouse (Which caused some problems). I have just upgraded my PowerBook to 2G of memory, and don't seem to have this problem any more.
From Panther, this is worthwhile upgrade. Everything works, even coverflow and quick look. Dashboard is another cool feature of Leopard. The only real difference in my PowerBook is that boot time is about twice as long, and the battery doesn't seem to last as long (but this could be that my battery is starting to die - I've had it since the Apple battery replacement campaign in Sept. 06).
Otherwise on a MacBook Leopard may run faster, but unless you spent a lot of time on an MacBook, running Leopard on a PowerBook seems fine (After the initial boot up).
FYI, I did have an initial problem with the Firewall and Airport. When the DHCP lease was up, it wouldn't be renewed via Airport when the firewall was active. The result being loss of internet connectivity. Another indication of this problem is that I could never initially connect to the internet everyday - because I've got an Airport network and my PowerBook needed a new DHCP lease. If I connected via an Ethernet cable, then renewing the DHCP lease with the Firewall wasn't an issue. From talking to Apple the solution was to re-install the Leopard, using the Archive option. This did the trick, and I don't have any more problems with the firewall.
Hope this helps.

  • Powerbook and Leopard - Should I or shouldn't I

I have a 1.33 ghz pbook with CS version 1, Fcut Xpress, AE 6.5 - has anyone made the leap to leopard - Leap to leopard ha! ha! funny man huh! - without any problems with CS and other software through the simple upgrading process.
Many thanks and sorry for the bad pun!

    You should.
Leopards speed is equal to tiger for me. The GUI, windows, folder opening have a speedy snap to them. Xbench 48 (no disk test) with tiger. Xbench 50 (no disk test) leopard.
The dvd player alone is worth it. It does a much better job at upscaling. It even looks good on my HDTV now.
As long as you have a decent graphics card (9600 series) to help the cpu do some of the work, you are fine. You can actually hear the gpu doing much more work than in tiger. for me the noise is a light high frequency whine. I heard the gpu in tiger when running opengl screen savers previously and some games.
Contrary to some threads, I am happy to report that my PB did not explode or catch fire after installing leopard. No crazy fan speeds here.

  • AI have an iPad and iPhone but am stuck with Tiger and Leopard. Will I stir be able to get my email on my PowerBook if I after I upgrade to iCloud?  I don't have the cash to upgrade the mac right now.

I have an iPad and iPhone but am stuck with Tiger and Leopard on my old powerbook G4.  Will I still be able to get my email on my PowerBook after I upgrade to iCloud?  I don't have the cash to upgrade the mac right now.  Just wondering what my email options are.  Thank You.

You will be able to get your mail on the PowerBook. The calendars (iCal) will not sync; any events added to iPad and/or iPhone will not sync with the Mac but will sync with each other (that is: the mobile devices which are on iCloud). My  MacBook Pro (Lion) and iPad2 (iOS5) sync fine; I still get my Mail on iBook G4, MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) and iMac (Snow Leopard).

After replacing the hard drive on my G4 Powerbook and reinstalling Tiger I am no longer able to synch between itunes and my ipod (Classic 160gb) it would seem that the software on the ipod is of later date than itunes and I am unable to update itunes to the state prior to the original harddrive's failure for Tiger OSX 10.4.11
Any ideas on the subject would be most helpful
    Thanks in advance

The last security update released for Tiger users was the 2009-005 update. The latest version of QuickTime is 7.6.4. The last version of iTunes that can run on Tiger is 9.2.1, because 10.0 only supports Mac OS X Leopard and later.
So, are you on version 9.2.1?
Was it Tiger or Leopard you had on the drive before?

What video Chat is supported with the PowerBook G4 (leopard) PPC 10.5.8 plz help

iChat works with AOL and ICQ. Note if you get ahold of an original Firewire iSight, those work well with iBook G3s, iBook G4s, iMac G3s, G4s, Powermac G4s and Powerbook G4s to the following limitations
    http://web.archive.org/web/20050301024002/http://www.apple.com/isight/
    ISPq is another
    http://www.ispq.com/
and they may be able to recommend some webcams that were available for those older Macs. This statement about the built-in iSight only applies if you have a second machine other than the Powerbook G4. If your machine has a built-in iSight like the later iMac G5s, and iMac Intel, MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro, all you need is an AOL account to hook up to video chat via iChat software pre bundled with your Mac. Newer Intel Macs may support video chat with Windows machines more easily thanks to their ability to virtualize Windows.   If your friends have MSN, or Netmeeting, that gets a little more hairy with PowerPC Macs, but not necessarily impossible as http://homepage.mac.com/john_kenn/video.html explains.

  • VOIP and Leopard

I've had a PowerBook for the past seven years - the little 12" guy, and loved it because I travel a lot. A few weeks ago it died after many years and miles of trouble free service. I recently purchased a MacBook with Leopard 10.5.2 pre-installed. As a traveller, I use Vonage VOIP through their Softphone application. I've downloaded it to my new MacBook and find that it is slow to launch and unexpected quits in the middle of a phone conversation and always unexpectedly quits when I hang up. Is there a compatibility problem between Vonage Softphone and Leopard? If so, can I still buy a copy of Panther and install it on my new MacBook? The ability to use the Vonage Softphone is more important to me than the latest and greatest version of the operating system. Thanks.

Thanks Thomas. Another chap suggested I contact Vonage and I'll try that but as you have pointed out Vonage is probably behind in updating thier versions. I'd try the Skype gladly but Skype is blocked in the Middle East which is where I'm working at the moment. Etislat doesn't like the competition so they block a lot of intenet based stuff. The other drawback to Skype is that it is only computer to computer and I need to be able to call a landline. My parents aren't into the internet. Cheers

  • DVD's and Leopard on a 1 GHz

I just ordered my first laptop off ebay a 1 GHz TiBook w/ stock hardrive and superdrive and 1 GB RAM and Leopard. So will I be able to play DVD's on this old computer ? I bought it basically for internet to go and wordprocessing but an occasional dvd on it wouldn't hurt.

DVD playback will be fine. It was (and still is) working fine on the original PowerBook G4 Titanium with as little as 400 MHz, so you don't need to be worried at all.

  • PowerBook and Time Machine

I have successfully upgrade Leopard on my PowerBook, and have backed up all my files on a Western Digital FW HD. I plan on upgrading to a MacBook or MBP in the near future, and was just wondering if this backup could be installed on the new computer.
It wouldn't be a problem to install all the software again, except that I no longer have the install discs for Adobe CS2. I don't want to re-purchase it, so can I just rely on the backup to install on a new computer?

I just realized that a Powerbook is a PPC not Intel, which means disregard my earlier post, you don't want to use Migration Assistant to transfer from a PPC to an Intel machine. Here is instructions on how to do that from Kappy and a brody. Keep in mind this is for Tiger not Leopard and there might be updates on this in the future:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (need version 4), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.
Additional links that will be helpful to new Intel-Mac users:
    Intel In Macs

Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
    1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
    4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (* This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ copy any preferences needed for third-party applications
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to another forum user for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

I used this just 3 months ago and everything went smoothly. Like you I could not find my CS disks so I copied over everything from Adobe by hand, carefully searching through all possible places then dragging and dropping to exactly the same folder on the new Mac. This is time consuming and best to go slow so you don't make a mistake. Search manually for files, not by using Spotlight or any other search software. I did this with both home and work Macs and everything worked perfectly, full working apps of the whole CS Suite on both with no problems.

  • Powerbook Spitting Leopard Disk Out After Boot, Clicking Noise also!!

Hi, i put the leopard installation disk into my powerbook and it makes this weird clicking noise but still can find the disc. I click on install and reboot my machine and then a grey screen comes up and the dvd drive starts clicking again and then spits the disc out! How can i fix this??
    Thanks Sam x

Is the Leopard disk a retail install disk like this:
    !http://a248.e.akamai.net/7/248/2041/1500/as-images.apple.com/is/image/AppleInc/ MB576AV1?wid=45&hei=40&fmt=jpeg&qlt=95&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&opusm=0.5,0.5,0,0&iccEmbed=0&layer=comp!
or the grey system disk from a newer Mac. A retail disk should read on any DVD drive; a system disk could be dual-layer and the only PowerBooks with a DL Superdrive were the last ones with Machine ID of PowerBook5,8 and 5,9. Also, a system disk for an Intel Mac will not install OSX at all on an older Mac with a PowerPC processor like the PowerBook.

  • IMac (Late 2006) Stalls with EFI 1.2 and Leopard

A few days ago, I installed both the iMac 1.2 EFI Firmware update and Leopard on my late 2006 20" iMac. Since then, I've seen random momentary stalls throughout the system.
It sometimes happens while scrolling a web page, displaying a sheet, opening a stack, browsing CoverFlow, and so on. I don't know how to intentionally recreate it, it just seems to happen. It often (always?) seems to coincide with some disk activity.
I don't remember this behavior on the same hardware in the past, so either it's something with the firmware update or Leopard. Has anyone seen anything else like this?
    Thanks in advance.

Some people reported various bugs after installing the firmware update. Shutting it off and turning it back was all that was needed to fix the bugs.

  • Endnote X1 and Leopard

Has anyone tried using Endnote X1 and Leopard? I can't open any files ("the document blabla couldn't be opened"), nor can I create a new library ("Failed to create library").
Anyone any ideas if this is fixable?

Fixed the problem. Originally I had no problems keeping the Endnote files wherever I liked, however it now only works with the Endnote files in Users/Library. A bit weird, but I can live with it.

  • Can I run Tiger and Leopard on the same computer

    Hi folks.
I've been meaning to install Leopard for ages but have never got round to it (I bought the retail box when it first came out). I have upgraded my RAM to 2GB and my hard drive to 320GB with no problems.
My upgraded hard drive has been partitioned into 2 equal parts of 160GB. These appear on desktop as Mackintosh HD1 and HD2. HD1 is the disk with all my files, music, OS etc and HD2 is empty
I have 2 bootable clones of my present system - one is on a 160GB external and the other is the original 80GB HD that I replaced.
My question is this - can I install Leopard on to my 160GB external HD, then clone it on to the empty HD2. If I do this would I be able to run both Tiger and Leopard on the same Macbook?
Is there any problems with this plan? Would I be able to transfer between the 2 OS and how do I install Leopard on the external drive. Is it just a case of inserting the Leopard DVD and choose the external drive as the target?
    As usual thanks in advance

    # Split internal, one partition with Tiger, another with Leopard.
Leopard is backwardly compatible with older Macs, just make sure yours fulfills the minimum system requirements, both use the same filesystem format, so each can see the other. You can't run both at the same time, unless you purchase the server version of Leopard and run it virtualized. 99.9% of Firewire external HD's are bootable, some USB's are bootable but have to test first. You can choose which system to boot from by pressing the Option key at boot time, before the chime. Just make sure the external HDD is plugged in and turned on if that's where you want to boot from.
When I migrated my PBG4 from Panther to Tiger, got an external FW HDD, cloned Panther onto it, upgraded using Archive and Install, cleaned up, customized and tested it. When I was satisfied all was ok, cloned the original Panther onto another partition of the external HDD, wiped and tested for failure the internal HDD, then cloned the known good and tested Tiger into it. Only thing that died along the way was my old and ancient Photoshop v2.x, that refused to run on Tiger.

Not quite sure exactly what you want to do, but you cannot do it on a PowerBook. iCloud requires Lion and Lion requires an Intel MacBook or MacBook Pro.

  • 1st generation MacBook, battery and Leopard issues; looking for help please

I have a 1st generation MacBook that started having battery problems immediately after installing Leopard. it was the same issue many others have complained about; battery life shortened and shutting down while on battery power with no warning. I have never had that problem while using Tiger. I experienced this with both 10.5.0 and the stand alone upgrade of 10.5.1 using an erase and install method.
(BTW, as a side note: I'm religious about calibrating my battery every month and use a program called "CoconutBattery" to document the results. Prior to Leopard, the battery measured 97-99% capacity. Three days after Leopard was installed it was time for another check, the result was 74% capacity.)
I had a clone backup of Tiger and immediately restored my MacBook, but the problem followed Tiger. I have Applecare and called support. Both myself and the tech found it rather hard to believe that the battery just suddenly failed coincidentally after the Leopard install. We went through the regular things; SMC reset, firmware checks, diagnostics, repair permissions, etc.
We believe it has to do with the Battery Updater package. I had gone between both versions of 1.2 and 1.3, but the problem remained with both Tiger and Leopard. The tech decided to send me a new battery (it's on the way) and I wish to try installing Leopard again. As long as I have my cloned Tiger image, all I have to lose is my time, but hopefully, not another battery! I would honestly like to get Leopard running on this machine.
But... here's my question. In reading through these discussions in both the Leopard and MacBook forum, there doesn't seem to be any consensus of which BatteryUpdater package to use. The Apple tech honestly told me he didn't know. Also, if the BU package "writes" to the battery (which it states it does), can it be downgraded once v1.3 has been installed? I mean, should I leave the battery out, install Leopard, then manually update BU to v1.2 before installing the battery (if possible)? I do plan on testing the new battery with my Tiger install, just to verify it is working as it was before.
There are a lot of people here claiming to be knowledgeable about Leopard, never had any problems with a variety of machines, etc, etc, so I would appreciate your input. Please don't speculate, but if you're using a version of BU that works with Leopard and your 1st Gen MacBook, I would appreciate you telling me about it. I have tried to document and methodically relate everything I've done so far, but if you need additional information, just let me know.
I noticed Leopard had installed BU v1.3 when I checked it, so it must use that as default, since I noticed Tiger had v1.2.
OR, am I way off base on this? Can anyone think of another reason I may have had this problem? Am I barking up the wrong tree by concentrating on the BatteryUpdater package? Is it possible all these batteries are failing under a Leopard install maybe due to some unknown reason?
Any knowledgeable advice or suggestions are welcome, thanks!

Well, Ding Dang y'all... it appears the battery was the culprit. I received my replacement battery from Apple and followed the same steps and everything seems to be working fine.
It sure was strange that the battery started this problem immediately after Leopard was installed... I don't know what to say about that, unless BatteryUpdater v1.3 started the chain of events.
In case it helps someone else, here's exactly what I did (rebooted through each step):
    - Backed up data; unauthorized computer from iTunes
    - Erase and install from the Leopard disc, while keeping the old battery in
    - Installed Leopard, did software updates except for delta 10.5.1 update
    - Applied combo update of 10.5.1 from separately downloaded file
    - Found BatteryUpdater Bundle (BU) of v1.3, moved to trash, rebooted
    - Ran software updates, BU v1.2 was found and installed
    - Then, swapped out battery to new battery
    - Tested unit, seems to be okay now, no shutdown issues, battery runtime seems normal
Thanks to all that had advice and suggestions. It was enough to get me to try it again. Now, I have two more machines to upgrade, since these are production machines, I'll probably wait awhile. But, having this is a real treat.
    Have a great holiday everyone!
