Powerbook freezes when reinstalling

Hi everybody!
I'm desperate, I keep trying to reinstall my PB G4 but it freezes while it's reinstalling. I had never seen taht before, and I've been a mac user for more than 10 years! Does it mean that it's definively dead or do anybody know a secret formula that will make it work again?
Merci so much.
Max

no, i'm not trying to install my mac mini's os, and anyway, it wouldn't freeze, it'd just say it's not possible and not even start to install.
That's not necessarily true.
In any event, which discs are you using to reinstall your PB's system:
- the discs that came with your PB?
- retail discs? Do they contain a version of OS X that predates the OS whch shipped with your PB?
I wonder if it could have something to do with the RAM… do some things stay in the RAM even when you reformat?
It may be a RAM problem, but RAM is cleared on a restart, so that shouldn't be an issue.
Basic installation troubleshooting steps are here:

  • Powerbook freezes when I connect maxtor firewire drive

Ever since I installed tiger and upgraded to v 10.4.6 my G4 powerbook freezes when I connect a Maxtor firewire drive. I also recently installed Final Cut Pro Studio v 5.1. The maxtor drive mounts fine on another PB OS X 10.1.2. A Lacie firewire drive mounts fine on both computers. I can't figure it out. The powerbook with tiger crashes on startup when the maxtor firewire drive is attached or when it's just turned on. Does anyone have any solutions??

Welcome to the Apple discussion forums.
This isn't a guaranteed fix, however, did you update to 10.4.6 via software update or the combo installer? There have been some odd happenings recently when people have updated via the software update function. If you did the upgrade that way, you might try clearing your system and kernal caches (I use OnyX to do that, and other maintenance. It can be found at http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html ). Then download the 140mb combo updater, which can be found at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1046comboforppc.html .

  • Powerbook freezes when it goes to sleep...

I recently took my 17" Powerbook G4 to get a new motherboard because the old one was giving off a false over-heat signal, causing the computer to shut down after a few minutes.
Anyway, I've got it back now, but it's starting to act up...but in a different way. If my computer ever goes to sleep, be it because I left it open for long enough that the screen goes black or if I close the lid without shutting down, it'll freeze up. I can wiggle my mouse to get it out of sleep mode, but then it just freezes and it's really annoying cause then I have to reboot. So now, I can't keep a website up and go away for an hour and then come back to it because it'll freeze. Every time I leave my computer I have to shut it down and then start it back up when I come back. It's a huge hassle and I'd love to know why it's doing this. Is it the new motherboard? Do I have to take it back for more repairs?
    Please help!

My 15" Powerbook G4 just started doing the same thing yesterday - it freezes as soon as I wake it up from sleeping. Sometimes it freezes before it finishes booting up as well.

  • Powerbook freezes when not plugged in

so for the last week i trouble shot a friends power book. ran apple hardware test, repaired disks, updated the OS, etc.
the problem she was having was her powerbook just keeps freezing. If itunes is running, it keeps playing music and she can move the mouse but thats it. no dock, no nothing.
I ran it for a week with itunes, iphoto, idvd, imovie, and safari running.... and it never froze.
The one time i did see it freeze it was unplugged from power and the screen-saver froze.
so i just gave it back to her, she starts it in the car and it freezes. i told her to take it home and plug it in for a day while she is using it and tell me what happens.
any ideas? i don't want to reload the OS... and i've already cleared the temp files, flashed the pram and reinstalled the last OS update...
    thanks.

Hi Dave, Welcome to the Discussions!
First of all, have a look at the energy saver settings in system preferences. Typically the settings are different for running on battery power as opposed to the power adapter.
    Make sure they are realistic.

  • PowerBook freezes when coming out of sleep/screensaver

This problem with my 12" PowerBook started yesterday. I thought it was because I bumped it slightly, but I really don't know.
When I leave my PowerBook with the screen open and try to wake it up again from the screensaver, it freezes. I get the colored, spinning wheel and the computer won't respond to the keyboard or mouse. I had a downloaded screensaver from the Apple website and I just deleted it to see if that was the problem. Now I can't even change my screensaver settings in System Preferences. It just freezes.
    What can I do?
    PowerBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Welcome, Alliekat08
i would first start to reset PRAM. if this doesn't help, i would do as fast as possible a backup of all files you want to keep. next step would be to see if it has to do with a specific screen svaer, or not.
There might also be some settings which lead to this problem; you might try to move the screensaver settings (the System-Prefs) to a file with a different name, it is the file com.apple.systempreferences.plist located in /User/Library/Preferences.
more complicated solutions might be an "Archive and Install" respectively an "ERASE and Install", but these are really drastic approaches. if you are (relatively) new on macintoshs, i would post back, before i would go to do this.
    Hope this helps,
    Thomas

  • Why does Powerbook freeze when attaching files?

    I am working an a friends Powerbook G4 1.5 GHz 15", running Leopard 10.5.8.
Whenever I attempt to attach a file, located in applications, downloads, desktop, and when composing an email (any mail application, Yahoo!, etc), the Powerbook will begin with the spinning beach ball and will hang there. The only way to proceed is to power it off. Force quit doesn't work.
I have run diagnostics with DiskWarrior (succesfully rebuilt the directory), TechTool, and even performed an Archive and Install with the Leopard install DVD.
One possible clue. There was a Kernel Panic when I tried to start from the Disk Warrior DVD. I was only able to use it through Target Disk Mode from my iBook.
I also tried re-seating the  Airport Extreme card and both RAM cards. System profiler looks good. All hardware is recognized and OK.
I may try to disconnect the DVD drive next but wondered if this problem might ring a bell for someone out there.
    Thanks in advance!
    Randy

Thanks for the reply.  I'm sorry, my question wasn't clear. I was actually speakiing of web based email, like Yahoo.
Even though my friend said his hard drive is new, I decided to download a trial version of Smart Utility to his machine and had an Ah-Ha! moment. The drive is failing. I shouldn't ber so fooled when disk Utility and Disk Warrior say that the disk is OK. Directories and mechanics are two different animals.
Thanks for the permissions repair suggestion. I did try that.
    The help is much appreciated!

  • G4 PowerBook freezes when loading CD to iPod

My G4 MPB hangs on occasions and does not respond to force quit. It can only be restarted by holding down the ON button until it shuts down. Mostly the cursor continues to move around the screen but no other response.
I just installed the max RAM and upgraded to 10.4. When attempting to import music from CD to iTunes it hangs up after about 6 songs. I can load the CD by first transfering to hard drive using Finder then importing to iTunes from the drive - no problems.
Same sort of thing downloading software after about 50MB it hangs and will not respond to anything. Wheel spins, nothing else.

One further thought is that perhaps my MPB fan may not be operating correctly. Could the symptoms described be caused by overheating?

  • Powerbook freeze when DVD is inserted

    Hi,
This issue has just started happening. Everytime I put a dvd into my combo drive it makes my mac crash. DVD player starts to open and then it hangs and I have to manually shut the computer down. I tried using frontrow instead but this was no better. I dont think its a mechanical issue because other cd's work fine, i think it is only DVDs.
Has anyone else had this issue or can anyone at least point me in the right direction on how to fix it?! It is frustrating because I really like the DVD aspect of the mac!
    Thanks

I checked here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1313471&tstart=0 and found this fix http://www.hurrikenux.com/Testing/UnofficialLeopardGraphicsUpdateRollback1.2.zip thanks!

  • I have a powerbook G-4 15 inch, It wont boot up and the display only works on the first try. it gets to the apple screen and freezes, when i try to restart theres no display. Help please, whats the issue here?

I left it running over night, it was running perfectly, in the morning the screen was black. i tried to restart it and got no display but i can hear the machine running. so i put away for several months, plug it in, charge the battery, it boots, i have a display, it loads the desktop and freezes. when i try to restart it theres no display. the last time i tried, i started it, i got to the apple screen and nothing. whats the issue here? please help.

Will it boot OK in Safe Mode? See What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392 Takes a while to run, but it usually "fixes" problems.

  • Idvd08 freezes when rendering chapters

I have a brand new MacBook Pro with Leopard installed and IDVD 08. I have made a long movie in IMovie which has a number of chapters. I created the DVD in iDVD 08 a few weeks before Chrstmas, but when I went to burn the DVD, it kept freezing after a while whilst rendering chapter menus.
I understand this is a known issue between iDVD08 and the Leopard operating system. Does anyone know if this issue has now been resolved or, if not, what is the ETA for a fix?
    Many thanks
    Joe McCrea

    Hello All,
I've been struggling all week-end on a project my son called me in for rescue. I've experienced too that total freeze of my brand new MBP (15"). To make things short: The problem is not solved yet, but I've isolated several facts.
First, it's started with a problem my son had with his school project on a PB-G4 and iDVD fron 08'. It choked because we had imported some 30fps elements into a 25fps project. It choked on muxing those heterogenous elements, even tough "properly" imported by iDVD.
Second. I copied his project to my MBP to benefit from the processing speed increase. On that same project, I didn't reached the point to generating the movie and got the freeze when creating the assets.
I spare you all the events in between. But after clearing that 30fps vs 25fps conflict by regenerating all components in 25fps natively, I identified the exact moment of the crash.
That project uses the Revolution theme from Theme 7.0. I've successfully generated an image file using another Theme like the Concrete Theme from www.dvdthemepak.com
The freeze appears when iDVD comes on generating the first "Scene selection" menu screen from the project. It's kind of odd as this project has 8 chapters requiring an additional scene selection menu. I see the 2nd scene selection menu being processed Ok, and the Top menu too. All menus use the same additional content for the one drop zone the Revolution theme has.
That "freezing" is very odd to me. I'm a unix geek. A system never freezes under Unix. At most, one process can go wild and hog all CPU and never relinquish a cycle before being terminated by kernel. In the case of MacOSX, the freeze is only apparent: the window manager process gets hosed. It's very probable that you can ssh to it from another unix system and shut it down being root. In this freeze. The dual cores of the Intel chips gives more chances accessing the shell level before the machine is brought to a stand still. Here: no CPU overheating. Just a plain solid freeze. I've not tracked any kernel event letting me know of a kernel issue. This is plain odd to me. I'm learning new stuff here.
Back to the issue. I was even fearing at one moment it was disliking the accentuated characters we've used in the menu texts. I eliminated this option too be removing all accents from the vowels.
Needless to say that this Project compiled without a glitch on the PowerBook. At least, we were able to finish that assignment.
Now, my MBP is still not fixed. Gotta call AppleCare for that.
Some additional clues: I got this MBP with iLife loaded in. It was missing the Old Themes I like, plus www.dvdthemepak.com themes. iDVD is smart and proposes you to load those Old Themes from the MacOSX Install disk 2 .... but this fails !!!! As I'm a bit smart I gave a try popping in the iLife 08' DVD and it allowed me to install the missing Old Themes. Now something went wrong because iDVD 7 doesn't behave like iDVD 6 and splits the lastest Themes away from the oldest and custom Themes by copying them to the user's Library folder. It keeps under the /Library only the latests themes.
I manually copied from another Mac the www.dvdthemepak.com themes and this was my mistake. iDVD went totally haywire not even recognising its installed themes, displaying a "Broken Theme" image in a hugly kiddy art crayon chalked letters. Anyways: stand still.
I decided to trash both Themes directory (user and system), pop-in the iLife DVD and reinstall iDVD. I was NOT given the choice to re-install iDVD ! So, I trashed iDVD app and tried again installing iDVD through the iLife DVD. Well, not much luck: The installer doesn't let me install iDVD but only the additional old themes. I went on with this option. "Miracle!" iDVD app was installed, with the additional themes ... but NOT the main themes (5, 6 and 7) Arrrrgh ! I'm choking.
So, I copied from another Mac with iLife 08' the 5, 6 and 7 Theme. And it worked.
Well, not that god as now iDVD freezes with the Revolution 7 theme. It may not be at all linked to all the problems I got updating iDVD from the default instal of a new MBP. At least, by reading this, you people are aware that you can only get the Old Themes from an Web install, or the iLife DVD. But NOT from the supplied DVDs.
I would need to try compiling this project with another Theme from the Theme gallery. That would identify that Themes 7 as being part of the problem (as www.dvdthemepak.com are operational).
Also, I'm eager to learn of a SAFE procedure to reinstall iDVD.
Last: I've not been able to do a "repair permissions" yet on this machine as I don't have a Leopard DVD. The Install disks that come with the MBP are not bootable. There is a different procedure that requires a specific set of actions in "to reinstall Leopard" in order to boot on those DVD. I'm scared this new procedure really reinstall Leopard, which will be a catastrophe of biblical proportions to me!
Very last. I still need to dig in the archived system logs to see if iDVD reported something before the freeze.
Hoping this help. I promise I'll post updates here when available.

    And How ?
What Data will be lost - or is all backup with Time Machine like Photos ,......
    Thanks in advance -
If you follow your plan, you will learn a lot and not be nearly so "new" to Mac. Here are my responses to your latest questions/statements:
So i think i will try to make a clean Installation .
In our jargon, a "clean" install means that you will erase your disk and individually reinstall your system and applications, and then restore your data files. This method is very thorough and will give you a pristine system, but it requires considerably more of your time and effort than other methods that may correct your problems.
Easier alternatives are available for your consideration. Before you undertake a system reinstall, read the rest of this post and then study this document and the links in the document that are applicable to your problem and plans:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1388
If you decide to reinstall your system, carefully consider your installation options:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545 (also applies to OS 10.6)
As i am "new" into Mac - what will be the best way .
"Best" can mean different things to different people. For example:
    • The method explained in the User Guide (manual) that came with your Mac is the easiest way.
    • The "Erase and Install" option from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545 is quicker to reinstall, but requires more work for apps and data after the OS is installed.
    • Archive and Install with the "Preserve user and network settings" option eliminates the need for reinstalling apps and reconfiguring network and other user settings by "preserving" these things during the OS reinstall. Unfortunately, it sometimes also preserves the problem that is causing your difficulty.
    • Secure erase before installing OS assures that NOTHING unwanted remains on your disk to cause problems after the reinstall. One pass of writing Zeros is sufficient for your purpose. Note that secure erase will take hours, depending on the size of your disk. The help article below applies to your 10.5&6 as well as the 10.4 it states,:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1011.html
Perhaps easiest of all (as least for Time Machine users) is to use your Mac's Leopard Install DVD and your Time Machine backup to "Restore" your system to a configuration dated BEFORE you did the update that has caused your problems. This method will get you working quickly, but it will not help you use Snow Leopard. If you have not already figured out how to do this "Restore," see:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
The section entitled " Using Disk Utility" will help you use your Time Machine backup to take your entire system back to when Leopard was working. After it works again, either stay with Leopard, or uninstall or update whatever software is causing your Snow Leopard conflict before again updating to Snow Leopard.
My questions - with what System CD i should start to make the clean install ? 10.5 or 10.6 ?
Use Leopard Install CD if you want to backup to Leopard.
Only use Snow Leopard if you want to try a fresh install of SL to see if you can get it working.
    And How ?
Depending on your needs and whether you bought your Mac and SL update locally, and especially if your time is valuable to you, the best way may be to contact your retailer for an appointment so he can either help you or fix your problem for you. If you can use this as a training exercise, you will find it easier to do than to read and write about, and you can ask questions during the process. If you retailer does not consider proper installation of the SL software you bought from him to be part of his service, and if he offers "One to One", you may find it well worth your time and its cost:
      http://www.apple.com/retail/onetoone/
If you have plenty of time, or if you merely like doing things for yourself, follow the instructions for the Disk you are using (or the instructions in the links I cite above if you want to try one of those methods.) Remember, you can try an easy/quick way first in case it works without all the manual effort on your part. If that fails to correct your problem, you are only out your time. You can try the next easiest way, and keep trying increasingly complex methods until you find the one that works for you.
What Data will be lost - or is all backup with Time Machine like Photos ,......
This answer varies depending on which method you use to restore your system or reinstall your OS:
    • NOTHING IS LOST when you Archive & Install
(if you "preserve user and network settings" before installing)
    • EVERYTHING IS LOST when you secure erase.
    • Other methods may keep data but lose application or user configuration settings.
    (1) I use SL on two Macs and it work GREAT on both. I WANT to use SL because I like it MUCH better than Leopard.&ensp:You did not ask this, but here is how I would proceed to get SL working:
♦ Unless you already have it, I would make another, separate, backup of all important data in addition to the one you already have in Time Machine. One backup is not enough for me. In addition to your music, photos, and other data files, consider items like those listed here:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2980
♦ THEN, I would securely erase the startup disk and follow the instructions that came with the SL DVD to install SL.
♦ Immediately after the restart that completes the install, I would use Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions.
♦ Then configure your internet connection, and download and install the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo):
      http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959
♦ Immediately after the restart that completes the Combo Update, repair permissions again.
♦ Once you have reinstalled SL, use  > Software Update... to update any other Apple software as needed. I repair permissions before and after any installer than asks me to enter my Administrator Password.
♦ Now you can test your iMac using http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 to verify that the problem is resolved. If your problem persists at this point, see your Apple Authorized Service Provider for professional help.
♦ You can restore your data files either now or after reinstalling third-party items.
♦ Now, you can reinstall necessary third-party software. Install only one item at a time and test thoroughly before adding another so you can tell if one of them is causing a problem.
    (2) If you would rather retreat to Leopard and not bother trying to fix SL on your Mac, the easiest fix will be to restore your Leopard system from Time Machine. You can then restore any data newer than your last working Leopard system from your backups.

  • Extension Manager CS6 freezes when loading extensions

Extension Manager CS6 freezes when loading extensions
When launching Extension Manager CS6 it starts loading extensions but totally freezes when the last 30 percent of the loading extension bar is still unaccomplished. It is not possible to close the window, not even with the task manager.  I have restart the computer to get rid of it.
My OS is Windows 7, 64 bit. The most recent versions of the entire Adobe CS family are installed, freshly updated, including the Extension Manager CS6.
To trace the cause of the problem I tried to create a log file in the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Extension Manager CS6. I logged in as administrator and wrote in the Command Prompt Window:
    echo > ExManLog.YES
The log file was created but contains nothing but "ECHO is on".
A possible cause of the problem might be that I have two installed active version of Ajatix Advanced CSS Drop Down Menu, which is an add-on to Dreamweaver. The first version is the free one, the second is the full paid version. I would like to deactivate the first one since which might make the Extension Manager happier. But the only way to deactivate it that I know of is to use the Extension Manager. Catch 22.

Dear Carl, thanks for the advice that made me understand how to remove an extension without using the Extension Manager. However, the problem persists, i.e the Extension Manager freezes soon after it is launched, when the last 30 percent of the loading extension bar is still unaccomplished.
Following your instruction I have tried to remove both my versions of the troublesome DW extension (Ajatix Advanced CSS Drop Down Menu). Which in my case meant that I deleted the following files:
    the files com.ajatix.AdvancedCSSMenuLight.mxi, com.ajatix.AdvancedCSSMenuLight.mxi_air and com.ajatix.AdvancedCSSMenuLight.zxp in C:\Users\<My UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Extension Manager CS6\EM Store\Dreamweaver CS6
    and the files ajxcssmenu2.3.0.mxi, ajxcssmenu2.3.0.mxi_air and ajxcssmenu2.3.0.mxp in C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Extension Manager CS6\EM Store\Dreamweaver CS6
In the hope of cleaning out everything from this extension I have also deleted the following files:
    AJXCSSMenu.chm, AJXCSSMenu.dll in C:\Users\UpdatusUser\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS6\en_US\Configuration\JSExtensions
    and AJXCSSMenu.chm, AJXCSSMenu.dll, AJXCSSMenuLight.chm, AJXCSSMenuLight.dll in C:\Users\ipb-master\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS6\en_US\Configuration\JSExtensions
Every time I thus get rid of the Ajitex files the Extension Manager seems happy and loads the only extension I currently have left (Adobe exchange). However when I reinstall the Ajitex extension, the Extension Manager behaves in the same bad manner, freezes after approximately 70 percent of the process of loading extensions. Same thing when I remove this extension and try to install another from Ajitex (Email Spam Blocker). It seems to install all right but afterward the Extension Manager freezes when launched.
Don't know what to do now.

  • ITunes freezes when I open the store

Ever since I downloaded the latest iTunes, it freezes when I try to open the store. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling, but it didn't fix the problem (as I have found in the past usually works when I have a problem with iTunes). I have no idea why it's doing this or what I can do to fix it. I received a lot of iTunes gift cards for Christmas and would loove to be able to actually use them. Any ideas? Thanks.

EDIT: I've re-installed twice now. After re-installing iTunes froze for about 10 minutes before it opened the "Welcome to iTunes" window. It appears to be able to access store pages, just not without freezing for 10min. at a time for every single thing I enter or click (including 10min. per character I type in a text box). Any help would be appreciated.

I have 4 IBM T series laptops, 3 T-40's and ONE T-42...The issue I have is with the T-42 ..2379RFU , it randomly freezes and from studying the problem I find it is for instance when using IE and I select to DL some software ..there is 2 windows that pop up on top of each other immediately...in addition the the original window I use to browse to find the DL...One window says ofcourse ...RUN...SAVE...or Cancel I believe...can't remember what the window under it says but as soon as these windows pop up the computer freezes...and I can't do ANYTHING...CTRL-ALT-DELETE or anything else...all I can do is press the power button to do a hard shutdown of my system...Then do a restart...NOW when using Firefox I can DL...but it STILL freezes when I watch certain videos online...In addition it freezes when trying to use Windows Live Mail...It's like when a certain amount of memory is used it freezes the puter ...and I've watched the performance using the Task Manager when this happens and EVERYTHING freezes and CPU usage goes to 100%...but it also does on my other laptops but they don't freeze up...SOOOOOoo this is what I've done so far...I've ran diagnostics on as much as I know how to...and everything is fine...I've swapped the hardrive with one of the other laptops I have and still the same thing...I've swapped all the memory, swapped the wireless card and still the same thing...I changed the Modem...lol...still the same thing...The T-42 doesn't seem real HOT and the fan works fine, I pushed EVERYTHING and move the puter when it freezes and still nothing...Swapped the keyboard even...thinking about swapping the Navigation pad and buttons with one of the other puters but haven't yet...I've done every update I can possibly find, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Flash, IE, Firefox, Disabled my Anti-Virus and Firewall, uninstalled drivers and re-installed, Disabled the Hardware acceleration...Updated the BIOS and checked for other updates...and STILL the same result...I have NEVER had a problem with ANY of my other T-series latops...and the only thing I can see that is different from the T-40 and the T-42 in terms of general visionary stuff is one has an ATI Mobility RADEON 7500 Monitor and the other has a ATI Mobility RADEON 9000 for a monitor....Most everything else as far as Drivers and updates are the same...And I'm running XP Professional on all of the laptops, so I figure it's a hardware problem...since I swapped out the HD's with the same result...This T-42 works great for an old cheap laptop and I can't afford a NEW one NOW...That's why I have these...I have like $200 in all 4 laptops because they are OLD but work prefectly except for this ONE...1.8 ghz processor, 60 gb HD, I gb memory which is fine for what I need in a laptop I have desktops for everything else I do.....anyone have any ideas?...

    Hey.
Since you seem to have tried mostly everything, apart from exchanging the motherboard, I'd say you have at least one option left, and that's to reinstall Windows from the recovery partition / recovery discs. That might solve the problem, if this is due to a software-error. General updates etc. might not work to fix such problems, but a clean install should.
If that doesn't help, I'd say the problem is somewhere either with the CPU or the motherboard, maybe bad connections or some sort of malfunction that prevents the computer from coming out of the 100% CPU usage.

  • Creative Zen Vision 30Gb Stuck in Recovery Mode, Freezes when trying to deal with Firmware

My Zen Vision is stuck in Recovery Mode. The PC recognizes it but it comes up as 50mb Storage Media. When you touch Reload Firmware or Format All, it freezes and you have to pull the battery out to shut it off. I don't know what to do. Charges fine, never said anything about HARDWARE issues, just can't get it to not freeze when trying to load firmware back onto it.

I did the same thing, my unit was working perfectly.
I just read that these players have a laptop 2.5 hard dri've installed in the unit. If this is true, the next chance I get, I will take my unit apart (40 gig nomad zen xtra) and see if I can reinstall the firmware directly. It's probably what they do at the repair sho
    ps.
