Powerbook on the beach

Hello People,
I need some advice about my titanium G4 powerbook. I have been offered a great opportunity to be the resident DJ at a very big beachfront bar, where I will mix tunes as well as lay live sax over the top. I am using beatport sync, a DJ application which plays the tunes from your HD. I have several concerns!
1. I realise that salty moist air and the elements in general can be destructive to the computer so I would like to minimize the damage, I thought of creating a kind of case which could house the mac and use an external monitor, but I am not sure if this is a good idea (heat etc?). One good thing is that there is a good breeze and I'll be playing in a covered DJ booth (overlooking the sea!) so it's not like leaving the mac in direct sunlight. Any ideas about this? It will be about 2-3 weeks every day for 6 hour sets.
2. I tried using my G4 on the beach but found screen visibility very poor due to sunlight, even when in shade. Could buying a different type of external monitor help this? Is there a device which can improve the visibility? I don't want to strain my eyes too much as they are long sets.
3. This is a long shot, but just in case anyone has any experience... anybody know if there is a way I could utilise my Novation Remote Zero midi controller in this setup with beatport sync? Would be fantastic and take away some screen staring.
Thanks ever so much
Ben, Brazil

Hi, Ben.
1) An open-air beachfront is a terrible place for a Powerbook or any other computer, as you've correctly suggested. Any small enclosure you improvise to protect it from the salt- and moisture-laden breeze will impair its ability to cool itself. Its fans will constantly inhale highly corrosive air whenever it's warm, as it is always likely to be when working hard on a sunny Brazilian beach, even if you keep it shaded. And if you don't keep it shaded, it will quickly overheat even with both fans screaming.
So my advice is to regard the computer as a consumable commodity whose cost is part of the cost of doing the business you're in. Expect it to have a shortened lifespan; budget to replace it at shorter intervals than you would in a less hostile environment; and keep its hard drive backed up frequently to an external drive that's stored in a more friendly place, so you can transition quickly to a new machine as needed.
I hate to say it, but your situation is one in which I might be inclined to sacrifice a cheap Windoze laptop every year or two rather than jeopardize a useful Mac.
2) Construct a stiff, lightweight corrugated cardboard hood for the Powerbook's display (or for whatever external display you decide to use, if any) that allows you to see the whole screen at whatever proves to be a usable working distance. You're likely to have a lot of trouble seeing any display when the backdrop behind it as seen from your viewing position is very bright, and if you can position the computer or display against a darker background it will help considerably.
3) I have no idea.

  • I'm having trouble accessing a Library. I keep getting the beach ball every time I try to open it.

Hi all. Very, VERY new to FCP. I've used many of your suggestions on here to help me through a lot, so thank you!
This is just one issue that I can't seem to figure out.
I was working on a project yesterday without any problems.
Today when I went to work on it, Final Cut would start up, but it would display the beach ball forever once the start up routine was finished. The project would never load.
A note, I have all current App updates installed.
(I figured maybe this particular project didn't get updated for some reason, so I tried manually updating my projects and events, but when I went to select them in my 2nd drive, they were grey and I couldn't select them.)
Another note, other projects work perfectly fine when I go to open them. It's just when I go to open this particular one, Final Cut will not work. Endless beach ball.
I tried a suggestion that one user had, and that was to open two separate windows in Finder, and move the uncooperative library package contents into a new library. That didn't work either, and now I am unable to move the library package contents back to their original library. There is a yellow "!" triangle next to the library in Final Cut, so I'm wondering if this means that the file is corrupt.
Hopefully I've given enough information on here to shed some light on my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it was working on 10/1, why not open up the most recent backup library with a timestamp of that day. Unless you specified otherwise, your backup folder is in Movies in your home folder. You can double-click one to open it in FCP.
The update command actually wants a mounted drive selected.
I suggest not going into the library bundles and moving or modifying folders/files except as a last resort. It sounds like both libraries are corrupted.

  • When I open safari, I get a blank page and the beach ball.

When I open safari, I get a blank page and the beach ball. If I try to go to a website, it will load up to a certain point sometimes—the .com of www.facebook.com for instance—but other times, nothing at all.
I've fixed this once before by deleting some files in the library folder—extensions & preferences I believe—and choosing not to have plug-ins selected, then restarting the whole computer—rather than just safari. It will work fine for a day, or maybe 3 at the most, before I have to repeat the process all over again. I'm sure it's because I usually put plug-ins back on once I get it to work, because you can't really use the internet without using plug-ins. But I'm using Chrome right now, as I do when I'm too lazy or too in a rush to try the whole process of getting safari to work again, and I don't have a single issue with it.
My question is really, what plug-in could cause this to happen repeatedly? It's not like I'm going to websites that may have malware on them. I spend most of my day going to some of the most visited websites on the internet.
Is there a known bug out there, because Java has been overrunning concurrently with this happening. It's CPU % runs around 100. I quit the process, but it doesn't change anything. So, other than the fan turning on, I have not had any popup telling me that safari has crashed, that I'm not connected to the internet, or that something went horribly, horribly wrong. I'm pretty sure Safari things it's running fine, but it's not.
    Thanks in advance.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Everytime I start up my Mac mini I'll be able to use it only for a little while then the beach ball appears and it won't let me do anything I have to keep forcing it to turn off by holding the power button can someone help me?

I have no external devices connected to my Mac mini but still everytime I use it after about half hour to an hour in whatever I'm using wether it's the Internet or iPhoto or iTunes the beach ball appears and I cannot get it to stop I always have to press and hold the power button and force it to switch off I then do a safe reboot and it starts up again fine but same thing again after a certain amount of time it will freeze. I have also had on some occasions a bright white screen with a folder and a flashing question mark appear but it's not because of any external devices as they have all been removed please can someone help me as I have no idea why this keeps happening to my computer and I'm worried that there's something seriously wrong it's only about 6 months old and I have no experience in dealing with computers ??

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

  • How can I re-install OS X on a PowerBook when the DVD drive is dead?

I'm trying to reload my operating system on a PowerBook with the disk drive dead.
I've tried starting the the laptop as a target disk and plugging it into my Mac Pro and using the disk drive from the Mac Pro. It loads everything on the PowerBook fine. I can restart the Mac Pro using the PowerBook as the startup drive and it looks good, but when I try and restart the laptop by itself, it can't see the start up drive. Any other suggestions?

I'm not sure Apple still has replacement system disc sets for older Macs like a PowerBook available -- various consumer protection laws generally require that manufacturers maintain replacement part stocks for a "reasonable" amount of time but eventually those stocks will run out. Plus, a lot of PowerBooks can barely run Tiger, much less Leopard, making a $129 retail disc a potentially poor investment for a 5 or more year old one.
If the system discs are not available from Apple, if it was my PB I would look for used discs sets, keeping in mind whatever rights I still had for any OS version I still owned. EBay is a possible source for such things but a local Apple user group is probably a better one….

  • Every time I click print in Pages I get the beach ball and my mac freezes.

I just updated to the newest version of pages and every time I click print in pages I get the beach ball and my mac freezes. Any suggestions on fixing this? I've tried shutting down and restarting several times...nothing seems to be working and I'm loosing/wasting time trying to fix this...

    Hey there nmiller0528,
It sounds like you are unable to print from Pages at all from your computer. I want to recommend troublehsooting the Mac OS for print issues with this article named:
Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3147
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Help I can't get rid of the beach ball in system preferences!

    Hi,
I have an iMac OS X 10.8.3.  Every time I go to system preferences to change my screen saver I immediatley get the beach ball and the enire thing freezes up.  I can't do ANYTHING within system referneces and I can only get out by 'force quit'. We've tried everything we can think of. This is a new glitch because we used to be able to change our photos in screen saver all the time.  It is super frustrating and  it slows down everything.  Does anybody know what could possibly be happening and if there is a way around this?
    Thanks

Quit System Preferences if it's running. In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
    Caches/com.apple.systempreferences

  • Selecting apps and the Beach Ball

Select an application to start it up from the desktop or the Applications fiolder, and the spinning beach ball appears. Nothing else occurs (no app lanched). If I then select " anything" from the Dock ( an application, a folder, etc), the beach ball vanishes, and then selecting an application will launch it.

I'm having the same problem, when I open apps, beach ball, I go to a different app no beach ball but then when I try to do something on said app, beach ball!

  • Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down.

  • The beach ball will not go away.  It is acting as the cursor in all open programs.  I know summer starts this week but this is ridiculous!

    thanks Denise

This just happened here twice to. Was working in Photoshop CC on my Cintiq HD24 Touch when the cursor turned into a static beach ball. First time i ended up rebooting (really annoiying). Second time i opened Chrome to google this bug. Somewhere in the process of searching information my cursor changed back to an arrow???
Using Mavericks on a rMBP mid 2012, Photoshop CC and a Wacom Cintiq HD24 Touch. Did not experience this before working on the Cintiq.
    Just letting you know.

  • Second hard drive and the Beach Ball

Hello again, time to use the ever helpful Apple boards.
I've been having a strange and disturbing problem, disturbing because it always ends in a hard reboot.
I have two internal hard drives, one for running software, (called HD) the other for storing files. (Called FILES...Mostly Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator files).
Sometimes, when waking from sleep, I click on FILES and get an everlasting Beach Ball. I try to relaunch the finder and it won't relaunch, so a power switch reboot is the only way to get it going again.
What I've done: Disk Utility and Disk Warrior repairs. Apple Hardware Test shows all OK. SMART info still shows disk is good. I Checked connections. PRAM reset, permissions, com.apple.finder.plist deleted, still it happens. A reboot and everything is OK again, it's just that it's a hard reboot. It does not happen every time, but once or twice a week. I backup regularly so no data has been lost.
Is this a problem with the finder or could it be the drive? Logic board?
I think I am going to buy another drive and put it in there and see if it still happens. Unitl then, does anybody have an idea what this could be?

Are both hard drives using the built-in SATA bus? Or have you added a Parallel ATA to PCI card to enable the use of Parallel ATA hard drives.
Yes, they are both on the SATA.
I have come up with an interesting trick/workaround. If I have an item in the trash from FILES and I try to empty it before detecting the "freeze" (before I click on FILES and get Beach Ball) I get an error message saying the trash can't be emptied.
Stupid me, I didn't write down the error code because I didn't know that it had anything to do with this problem when it happened. But now I keep an item in the trash from FILES all the time, and I empty trash when waking from sleep. One of these times I'll get that error code again and post it in this thread.
More importantly, until I figure out what this is, I can use this to tell me that the "freeze" is occuring without triggering the Beach Ball, and thus avoiding the hard reboot.
