PowerBook OTInetClient problem

My PowerBook (c1995) Internet Explorer app will not open and this message is what I get....."IE could not be opened because OTInetClient could not be found." Can anyone tell me where that is located, or any way to solve the problem? Thanks

This is a repost from another topic. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1713619#1713619
I am having the same issue. It just started last night as well. Here is what I would suggest trying although it has not worked for me.
Reset -PRAM reboot and hold Control-Option-P-R
Reset NVRAM reboot holding Command-Option-O-F at prompt enter reset-nvram then return, then type reset-all hit return
Rest PMU http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449#faq10
try repairing permissions too of course.
Please let me know if anything works so I can have some hope.

  • PowerBook installation problems...

Anyone have any ideas on this G4 PowerBook installation problem. I haven't seen anything in any other threads about this...
I purchased a Leopard family pack a week and a half ago and the installation went without a hitch on my Intel Mac Mini. I thought I would give it a try on my G4 PowerBook... A week and a half later I am still trying...
Everytime I try the installation I get about a 1/4 of the way through and if I am lucky (?) a yellow triangle pops up and states that some of the system files were unable to copy onto the Macintosh HD (usually the system just freezes though. I have let it sit for 8+ hours and the progress bar does not move). I have read through the installation log and it has pages and pages of the same error "Unable to locate DB Handler 1". I have tried other installation methods thinking that the system did not like the "Upgrade" option. I have tried "archive and install" and "erase and install" and still nothing. I have even tried putting the Mac Mini in "Target Disc Mode" and installing via Firewire (thought maybe I had a finicky DVD drive in the PowerBook) but I get the same error everytime.
I called Apple that day after purchasing Leopard and after hours of being on hold I was told that the Leopard DVD I purchased is defective (kind of odd since the installation went perfect on the Mac Mini). Apple is supposed be sending me a new DVD but I am still waiting (it has been a week and a half and 2 more calls later).
    Anyone have any ideas?

Me and my friend have PowerBooks and we both had this problem too! im almost positive the disc isnt defective because mine has worked great on other computers too. Anyways i found a solution to this problem. Restart your PowerBook holding "T" then it will go into Firewire mode. Connect a firewire cable to the Mac mini and a hard drive should show up on the desktop of the Mac Mini (thats your PowerBook hard drive)
Put the Leopard Install DVD in the Mac mini and proceed to install
When install location screen shows up make sure to choose the PowerBook Note: if you dont usually it will default to the other computer and that will clear your hard drive.
Then start installing after this you shouldnt have any problems.
When the computer starts up it will show up on your Mac Mini display all you have to do is shutdown the Mac Mini and Powerbook and disconnect the cord. thats it! Good Luck

  • Powerbook airport problems

Hi. I have a Powerbook G4 with an Airport Extreme card and for the past year it has been running off a Telefónica ADSL router ( http://static.flickr.com/8/113803794c6d912455m.jpg ) and it has been running Wireless internet fine, until a few days ago, when the network disappeared and a new one appeared - one that doesn't work...
Every now and then, when I'm close to the ADSL router, the Wireless network appears again and the internet is fine. I know a couple of other people have been having similar problems, but does anyone know how to solve it?
    Thanks a lot.
BTW, the Powerbook has a 1.5 Ghz PowerPC G4 processor.
    Thanks again.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Could be conflicting networks your area.
Are your mac network preferences (airport) set to join a specific network (yours) or to connect automatically? If it automatic, I guess the presence of another network could confuse things and cause your mac to try connect to the other network, which may be secured and not allow a connection.
Try accessing the Web Configuration of your router (A quick google came up with this
    IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Login: adslppp@telefonicanetpa Password: adslppp but it is not guaranteed to work with your specific model of router so you may have to do some digging.).
You may be able to customize the SSID of the router, change the channel its using etc. If so you could eliminate a network clash as whatever is the cause of your loss of connection.

  • Powerbook G4 problems.

My girlfriend has a older Powerbook G4 and it recently started doing something strange. I'm more of a PC guy and most Mac products are pretty alien to me (although I use a iphone 4). So as soon as the Mac boots up it has this weird pattern on the screen. She tried a fresh format and it's still looks this way.
Here's a picture of the problem.
    http://twitpic.com/26a5hy
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix?
Thanks for taking the time to read.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
If your girlfriend has the original OS X disks that came with the Powerbook, get them, find the first one, which should say in small print on the label 'AHT Version x.x', insert it, and reboot while holding the alt/option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted, choose the extended test. It will test the hardware and let you know if there's any issues. Or if you have either of the TechTool programs, they can do similar testing.
From your description and picture, and the fact that you get the same blockiness on an external monitor, that sounds like the video circuit is failing. If the hardware test confirms that, then the logic board is toast. Replacement with another logic board would be the only solution if you want to keep it going.

  • Powerbook boot problem

I was using my powerbook and it suddenly froze. So after no responses from the keyboard i switched it off by holding the power button.
When i restarted, all i get is the flashing file icon (i know it cant find the mac HD)
I tried to use disk utility but that cant find the Mac HD aswell.
The thing is my boot disks dont work for some reason. So i cant do system restore.
    What are my options?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I seem to be giving this as the answer a lot (makes it look like that's the only thing I know, ha ha) but it's what I'd do if I came across the same problem.
Connect your bad PowerBook via "Target Disk Mode" to another Mac, and see if that Mac will recognize your PowerBook's hard drive. Even though your PowerBook can't see it, your other Mac might be able to see it since it has a working System Folder while your PowerBook, after the forced shut down, does not.
(By the way, connect your PowerBook to your other Mac via FireWire, and restart holding the "T" key).
If your PowerBook's hard drive mounts, you're now one step away from recovering and repairing.
In Disk Utility on your other Mac, open it up and find the AAPL FireWire disk (or it might show up labeled as whatever your PowerBook hard drive was named) and then try to diagnose and verify/repair from there.
You shouldn't need your restore/system discs for this. At least, for diagnosing.
If your PowerBook can't be recovered, then you will need your system/restore discs to reinstall. (Or any other Mac OS X installation disc that was made on or after--not before--your PowerBook model was made).
**did you mean your restore discs don't work because they itself don't work, or it didn't work when you popped them into your PowerBook?

  • 1.0 12" Powerbook install problems

I have been staring at a dark gray screen and the rainbow wheel for thirty minutes now.
I did an erase/install of 10.3 from the original powerbook disk and then tried to install Leopard and when I restart from the Leopard disc it shows the gray screen with the apple logo, then a warm blue screen and then finally...and ultimately... the dark gray screen with the rainbow.
I booted up in command mode and typed in to check the h.d. I did this twice and then typed in "reboot" so the h.d. is ok but this drive does not want to restart with the Leopard disk. Any suggestions?

The Optical drive is working properly.
I suggest installing Leopard onto an erased HD, There is no reason to install 10.3 first, and it might even cause some problems.
Insert the DVD, hold down the "C" key after the tone and see if it boots into the DVD.
If it does, perform an erase and install.
If it does not boot, you have some kind of hardware problem.

  • Calling all true Powerbook geeks-problem w/hard drive (sort of)

Ok, here's the deal. My old PowerBook G4 (manufactured in 2001) has a PMUnit that had pretty much gone to h in a hand basket so... I removed its hard drive and sold the whole thing to someone for them to play with/fix. I tried to put the hard drive in a case I bought at Radio Shack so I could xfer the stuff that was on that drive and then erase and zero the drive out (with hopes, of course, that I could at least make the little drive into a nice small external extra drive to use for this or that).
I got the data off the drive fine and the drive seems fine BUT... here's the deal - it doesn't quite fit into the standard case for this size drive. The Mad Dog case, for example, at Radioshack which is typically used, I understand, for these size of drives, is just a hair too small... sort of though it would fit save for the little black bolt type things on the side of the hard drive (which prevent the thing from slipping nicely into the case) and the screws for the board in the case which don't really sit flush after you screw them in through the drives screw holes. So - people with more experience than I here: what am I doing wrong? People on Craigslist said this case should fit these drives without a problem and many there say they've done this very thing.
I know someone here has probably done this. It's my drive and I want to be able to still use it even though the PowerBook itself is gone. Help!

AH: I hope you haven't already stripped the unusually soft heads of the screws by trying to use the wrong type or size of screwdriver to remove them. That would leave both you and the PB's next owner with a problem, for which the solution might be here (note the "might"):
    http://www.ifixit.com/PowerBook-Parts/G4-Aluminum-15-Inch-Screw-Set/IF154-022
But N.B. the following note on that page:
"Includes all screws except those from hard drive bracket and display assembly."
    (boldface added)
You might have to call and find out whether the screws not included in the kit are the very ones you need, or whether those are something different.

  • PDA PowerBook Sync Problem

    Hi form Australia,
I have a problem to sync my iPAQ 4150 Pocket PC with my PowerBook G4.
I am using PocketMac and I can not sync my iCal with my PDA at all. Entourage will sync but there is a time difference in the appointments (all over the place). If I add or delete an event in Entourage, on the next sync it would not be updated in my PDA. I have tried everything (and I mean it). Yes, I have tried the time zone change etc. nothing helps or it makes it even more complicated. I am syncing my iCal with Entourage at this moment using "Sync Entourage-iCall" piece of software. One thing I have noticed that after the events has been synced (iCal->Entourage) every appointment in Entourage would say "Event and the Computer Time Zones do Not Match. In Calendar Views, The Event Time Adjusted To Display Correctly".
    My Settings:
    Entourage-Time Zone: Canbera, Melbourne, Sydney
    Computer-Closest City: Sygney-Australia
    iCal-Turn on time zone support
    PDA-GMT+10 Sydney
So, what is the problem? I have tried to email PocketMac support with no response and no luck.
If any of have/had problem like mine please let us know what did you do to fix it.
    Thank you
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi Jo,
           Thanks for the response.
By implementation of AWTEventListener (Not available in Java 1.1.8, just implemented for debug basis), I found out that, if focus is on any hidden component, key events on such component will not work. That is what was happening with our application. I was able to solve this problem after this discovery. But still problem remains in one account which now we have to put in bugs of our application.
On MI home page,  when user clicks on button to execute our application, our application opens up but still focus remains with that button on MI home page due to which key event is not firing for first time as that button now becomes hidden. I tried request focus for our application's first screen's panel when that panel is shown but still it's not working. So still problem persists only on this account. Now we will ship our application with this bug. No other go.
Hope I have not complicated the explanation....:-)
    Regards,
    Gopal

  • Powerbook sleep problem

I own a powerbook G4 al (15") and I also have a sleep problem: my powerbook won't go to sleep when I close the lid or when i selectd Stop from the Apple menu.
Now, this wasn't happening in panther (10.3.9) nor in tiger until 10.4.2. I have installed updates one by one from 10.4 and found out that update 10.4.3 had something to do with my problem (doesn't matter if I use Software Updates or if i use combo updates).
I tried repairing permission, resetting the various nvram, pmu, ... but without success.
Also updated to 10.4.4 but the problem remain.
I installed 10.4.2 on another partition and there everything is working fine.
What is different in os x 10.4.3 and 10.4.4 from 10.4.2 that could cause this?
    Every suggestion is welcome!!!

    Hi.
    Hmmm...
    1. You wrote: "-in my other partition (system 10.4.2) i can run the maintenance script (via terminal, launchd etc), after updating to 10.4.3 an error is reported (file non found etc)"What is the exact text of the message (in English, please ;-)).
    2. You wrote: "(i read somewhere that those maintenance scripts could solve my sleep problem, so i tried them)"That information is incorrect. The maintenance scripts merely prune and rotate a collection of log files. If a rogue process is constantly writing messages to one of the Console logs, that can prevent idle sleep, which is why I asked about Canon and HP peripherals.
    3. OK, so there's no scanner or printer. Are there any peripherals attached? PC Cards (nee PCMCIA cards) installed?
    4. Here's some things to try:4.1 First, As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. This will rule out some common troublemakers.
4.1 Trash all preferences related to Energy Saver:4.1.1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
4.1.2. Open the Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder and trash the following two files therein:
    - com.apple.AutoWake.plist
    - com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
You'll probably be prompted for your Admin password when you trash these files.
    4.1.3. Empty the Trash.
4.1.4. Launch System Preferences and reset the Energy Saver preferences accordingly.4.3. See if a rogue Startup or Login Item may be the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.5. Not sure exactly what model of PowerBook you have, but if it is one of the "Double-Layer SD" models see:
    - "Don't move a PowerBook G4 (Double-Layer SD) for a moment after putting it to sleep"; and
    - "About the PowerBook G4 sleep indicator light status."
    Good luck!

    Hi valier7!
Since this is a technical question about your PowerBook, you might want to try reposting your question in this forum, instead of the forum you're in right now, which is Feedback about Discussions.
If you look at the top of the forum display page of this forum, Feedback about Discussions, it mentions that this forum should only be used for posting comments about the usage of Apple Discussions. Not questions or problems relating to Apple products, which belongs in one of the other forums here on the Discussions.

  • Powerbook installation problem

I have an 800mhz Powerbook G4 with a dead screen that I am trying to install Tiger onto. I am using an Apple studio display, and the computer otherwise works fine while running the currently installed 10.1.3. I am trying to upgrade to Tiger, but when the computer restarts from the install CD, I get a blue screen. It's apparently not a problem with the hard drive, but that the disk is not allowing for the Apple studio display. How do I get it to recognize the external display, when the f7 button is dead? How am I supposed to install Tiger on my computer?

Sorry, the disc is a commercially purchased DVD of Tiger. I think the problem is the same that occured when I first hooked up the studio display - the relevant information was off-screen to the left side until I hit the f7 key and the computer reset for the studio display. Only now, when it's booting from the install DVD, the f7 key is disabled and I can't get it to reset for the studio display. Can someone perhaps walk me through which keys to hit and in what order, so I can do a standard installation (with hard drive erase) of Tiger essentially blind? Help!

  • PowerBook Charging Problem?

I have a PowerBook G3 Wallstreet Edition. I have two batteries and a standard charger. When both batteries are in and the Power Adapter is plugged in, the top corner of the screen shows one battery with a 'lightning bolt' and the other with a 'wall plug.' Everything works fine, however the batteries do not charge. They only charge while the computer is off. This is not a major problem, but I would be nice if they could charge while I am using it.
    Thanks

    mdk11,
If all hardware is sound, only one battery will charge at a time; the same is true while running on battery...only one battery is used at a time.
Since the batteries charge when turned off, have you noticed if they will charge while the 'book is sleeping? If so, you may have a known problem. But before exploring that possibility, will one battery charge while the 'book is running? If not, then possibly you have a weak power adapter or even the wrong power adapter. If the power adapter is undersized or weak, then the power manager will first provide power to run the 'book and the battery will not charge.
The Wallstreet uses a 45 watt adapter; the adapters from the PB1400, 3400, any G3, and clamshell iBook are interchangeable. Some have used the Powerbook (Duo) 36 watt adpater but I do not believe it will charge the Wallstreet's battery when running.
I would first reset the power manager to cover all bases, and you can address the earlier questions I posed.

  • Powerbook 15" problems

    Hi,
I have a 15" powerbook aluminum that will boot intermittently, and I have no idea what could be the problem. Would anybody know if the problem is the logic board or the DC board?

Have you run the Apple hardware test? Insert the original OS X disc that says in small print on the label 'AHT Version x.x'. Insert it, reboot holding the option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, click the arrow to the right, choose the extended test. If you have TechTool Deluxe or Pro they can do similar testing.

  • Powerbook display problems

The display on my Powerbook display is behaving very oddly - almost as if the display isn't refreshing quickly enough. It intermittently leaves tracks when typing, moving windows, or moving the mouse. Running the extended hardware test found no problems.
It seems to have begun since installing Security Update 2007-006, and updating to iTunes 7.3.1. Could it the beginning of a display failure (the laptop is about 4 years old), or just a strange glitch?

  • PowerBook PC problems.

So, my mom's Powerbook PC is having some serious problems. It boots fine, runs OS9 fine, but there are some firewire problems. Nothing works in it, and I smell melted plastic when I plug things in, then it shuts down. We immedietly stopped using it, and got really freaked out. Luckily, it was ok. Sometimes the Ethernet doesn't work too.
We brought it into our local authorized Apple retail/repair store (TekServe), and they said the logic board was failing and we;d need to buy a new copmuter. I'm not sure I beleive this though, because when my mom brought it in concerning that it showed the ? folder icon on bootup, they said that the hard drive was ruptured and she'd have to pay 200 bucks for them to get her a new one. She brings it home, and I say "Pfft, no way!" Then I hold down alt, and select the hard drive and Wham, it boots fine now. So I'm not sure if this is another money-grabbing scheme, or would this be a failing logic board?

I have seen someone incorrectly plug in an external FireWire drive into a PowerBook (basically the connector was inserted the wrong way round) and within seconds, a burning smell was coming from both the FW drive and the PB.
The end result was that the logic boards on the PB and FW drive were fried. Fortunately the hard drives themselves were OK so no data was lost.
Your scenario sounds fairly similar, so I would expect that the logic board is either finished or will soon be.
