Powerbook Pismo Hangs on Startup HELP!

I have a G3 pismo that hangs on startup, no matter what I've tried!
I have tried to reset the pmu. zap the pram, change out the hard drive with another one with OS 10.3.9, boot from an external hard drive with OS 10.3.9, and external cd drive with an OSX Panther install disk.
I get the "You need to restart your computer" message in the background, and what looks like a kernal panic message in the front.
The kernal is version 7.0.0.
At the bottom of the page it says "We are hanging here..."
Has anybody been through this? Am I missing something?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Powerbook G4 Hangs at Startup

My Powerbook hangs on the grey apple window during start up indefinately. I have tried single mode start up and when I tried to Repair the disc it ended on the message that said 'Incorrect block count for file mach (It should be 1 instead of 0). Nothing else responded after this so I had to shut it down. When I tried repairing the permissions it hung on the repair indefinitely. I then tried the Verbose mode andit eventually seems to loop one message continuosly. The message is 'IOTABlockStorageDriver : : sCompleteZeroBlockTransfer-WARNING,completing a zero block transfer. The hard drive is accessible though through target disk mode and when I 'Option Boot' I can see the drive with its original mode.
What does this mean and how can I solve this problem? The computer is running on OS X 4.11 and I had just updated Third party sware called birthday book over the internet.

You must repair the HD, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft...

  • WebLogic 10.3.2.0 hanging at startup after "The server log file is opened."

    Hi,
A WebLogic 10.3.2.0 server is hanging at startup. There are no error messages. The last command in the startup window is:
"The server log file <log file dest> is opened. All server side log events will be written to this file."
I think the next line should be:
"Security initializing using security realm realm."
Any ideas on what could be the issue? For instance what resources should be accessed at that point of time? There is sufficient space left on the (virtual machine) disk. The VM configured with 8GB memory. Could it be performance related still?
Following is written to the log file:

  • Firefox 31 hangs on startup with no error messages

Simply put, Firefox hangs right on startup. I see it loading the two generic tabs and then the wheel spins and then it says 'Not Responding' on the top of the window. I have to force close it each and every time, and I've also tried the following solutions in no particular order to alleviate the issue:
    1) Ran SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes last night for any possible infections. Reported back with nothing.
    2) Booted my laptop up in Safe Mode (with networking) and still couldn't get it to operate.
    3) Performed several clean uninstalls and re-installations which also included clearing out the profiles altogether and then trying to open it again, nothing.
    4) Booted up Firefox by holding down the shift key and resetted it to its default settings and then tried firing it up again. Nothing.
    5) Attempted booting up FF in Safe Mode with the shift key, nothing.
    6) Created a new profile and tried booting FF, nothing.
    7) Read this article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs#Hyper-Threading about Hyper-Threading and followed the instructions which got it to operate, but I can't access the toolbar or the option menus. When I click on options Firefox closes with no error messages. I have a feeling this isn't the issue at hand but I figure I'd try it and at least I can get it to fully load and not hang.
    8) Deleted all Firefox extensions and Plug-ins, nothing.
    9) Enabled Firefox through firewall and antivirus settings, nothing.
    10) Updated my BIOS firmware as suggested in #7, nothing.
I've done almost 10 different things and I still can't figure out why Firefox keeps hanging on startup. I've looked into Youtube videos for tutorials and others posted about the Java crashing that was happening in an earlier version of FF. Since its not crashing, I'm unable to look into the crash logs and pinpoint a crash number or anything because it just freezes and when I click to close it I get a message saying: 'Close program' or 'Wait for it to respond.'
I'm running a 64 bit Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion g6-1c44wm Notebook PC
Microprocessor 2.10 GHz Intel Pentium Processor B950
    Microprocessor Cache 2MB L3 Cache
    Memory 4GB DDR3 SDRAM (1 DIMM)
Memory Max Maximum supported = 8GB
    Video Graphics Intel HD Graphics
    Video Memory Up to 1696MB
    Hard Drive 500GB 5400RPM)
I'm trying to be specific as possible! Please help! I'm at the end of my rope here!

Try to completely uninstall firefox, that means to '''delete''' the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory#Windows Installation directory] located for your 64bit in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\ , also, '''delete''' the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox and '''if exist''', '''delete''' the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.
then download and install again a new full installer from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
disable firewall and antivirus and antispyware for a little bit, and run firefox. any luck ?
    thank you

  • 10.7.4 Hanging at Startup

I don't often find the need for these forums, but I've got a tough one this time. Here's my issue:
I was recently using my late 2008 MBP (6 Gig RAM, 500 Gig HD) without issue as I have done for the last several years. The other night, I was running my DJ software (Traktor) which worked fine all night. I ended the night and shut the lid on my MBP, the next day, Traktor was still shutting down (as it does on occasion). I gave it a few minutes, but it seemed to have crashed so I force quit the program. Things seemed to be running slow so I restarted. When I did, my system hung on startup at the gray Apple screen with the spinning wheel. After many days and many, many troubleshooting routines, I'm STILL unable to make this go away permanently. Here's what I've tried:
(I've always been able to boot in Safe Boot mode, so that's how I've been doing maintenence)
Initially, I thought this was probably related to my DJ software so I uninstalled it (including manually uninstalling all extensions and preferences).
That didn't work so I started cleaning out my system (I haven't done a fresh install of OSX since like 2005, so it was probably time anyways). Still, no luck.
I reinstalled 10.7.4. Success, but only for the initial startup. A subsequent reboot and I'm back at the stalled startup.
Try removing more stuff from the system to no avail.
Wipe hard drive completely, reinstall OS X. WORKS!
So, I start migrating things back over from my backup (I used CCC instead of TM because I wasn't sure of the integrity of my TM backup). Things seem to be going OK.
Reinstall Messages beta and restart. NOOOOOO. Back hanging at same place.
I figure it has something to do with Messages, so I Uninstall the Messages beta. Still hanging at startup.
    Getting really frustrated now.
Time to try a blast from the past: Applejack. Yes, I know, it's not officially supported under 10.7, but low and behold, cleaning caches gets me back in business--but only for one reboot. Then I'm back at a stalled startup until I clean the caches again (and it's the system cache, not the user cache).
I tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM and then immediately cleaning the system caches. That again gives me one good restart then back to the hanging startup. And, that's where I'm at now.
I'm absolutely stuck. I literally have not experienced this kind of issue in at least five years, so I could really use a hand on this one. The last log entry that I'm getting on the stalled startup is this:
    6/28/12 11:25:39.364 PM ntpd: proto: precision = 1.000 usec
Then it just hangs forever. The spinning progress wheel just freezes. I left it sitting overnight at that screen, so I'm 100% sure that it's not going anywhere.
I have a couple of theories on what the issues could be, but at this point, I'm totally open to suggestions. From what I can tell (from watching the logs over the course of several (seems like) hundred startups), it seems like this is about the point in the startup where iCloud is trying to check my user credentials. That said, I could be totally off base with that. Also, although the preceeding log entry seems to come after this on occasion, I'm NOT seeing this entry on any of the startups that hang:
6/28/12 11:25:38.000 PM kernel: NVDANV50HAL loaded and registered.
Seems to me that this could be an issue too since that's obviously associated with the graphics hardware.
So, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Something you haven't mentioned is whether you have tried booting
from your clone and having the same issues.  Did you try that?
If it boots and works fine from the clone, then there could be
a corrupted file trying to be accessed at boot (possible bad sector)
on the internal drive or it could be that the drive is starting to
    give out.

  • Using a third-party card and gateway with PowerBook Pismo

    Hi,
My birthday present this year was an Apple PowerBook Pismo - the G3 400 model (full spec. below). It runs the latest version of Mac OSX (10.4.6 as below). Before I got the Pismo, I bought a Linksys WPC54G wireless card for my original laptop, a ThinkPad T23. This works fine with my Linksys WAG354G gateway, but I'm wondering if I can do the same with the Pismo, since original AirPort cards are still hovering at £70-£90.
My Linksys card is the revision-3 ie 'v3' version. It seems to be detected by my Pismo - running the AirPort setup wizard means it is detected and the access point is found. My network is protected with WPA (I think it's version 2) encryption, and AirPort asks me for the network password during setup. However, the next screen is blank - the screen that asks about base stations. Clicking 'Scan Again' does nothing, and I cannot continue. This was all with the original verison of Mac OS 10.4, by the way. I updated the Pismo last night, so I'll have a go with it. Since it is detected by AirPort, would I be correct in thinking the card has the Broadcom chip that is AirPort-compatible? It shows up in Apple System Profiler as 'Third-Party Wireless Adaptor,' if that helps.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Rob Johnson

    You're quite welcome zwarbo.
Should you need it, the procedure (as I remember it, my Pismo's out of action at the moment) is as follows:
Insert the card into the 'Book and allow Mac OS to find it. Once the 'PC Card' symbol appears beside the clock, click on the symbol and read the drop-down menu. If it says something like 'Unknown brand - Network Controller,' the Pismo has found your card. Next, open 'System Profiler' (Hard Drive -> Applications -> Utilities). Point to 'Network.' If your card is working as expected, it should display 'AirPort Extreme.' If not, you may have a card using another brand of chip, since only cards using BroadCom chips are supported natively by Mac OS. It's hit-and-miss what chip you get in your card - there doesn't seem to be a general trend. My card has the FCC ID 'Q87-WPC54GV3' and the IC ID '3839A-WPC54GV3,' if this helps.
If it does show up as AirPort Extreme, here is the full procedure for setting up the card for your network:
    - Open 'System Preferences'
    - Head to 'Network'
    - There should be an option, possibly in the drop-down box, to select 'AirPort.'
    - You will then have the option of switching AirPort on.
    - Select 'Only Join Preferred Networks'and either search for your access point, or manually input your router's details (the default IP address for the WAG354G is 192.168.1.1).
    - Now, when you insert your card, AirPort should automatically switch on and connect to your network. Naturally, if you want to use your Pismo on the move, you'll have to uncheck the above and try another way. Enabling the 'Show AirPort Status' is useful, while you're there.
Take this as a rough guide. My Pismo has a battery problem, so I'm having it sorted. As such, I can't actually use it, so when the 'Book is back in action, I'll double-check the procedure (I don't posess another Mac other than an ancient iMac G3, long before wireless). The Mac should remember your WEP or WPA key, unlike the Linksys Windows utility, which is tempermental at best.
    Hope this helps,
    Rob Johnson

  • Indesign CS5.5 hangs on startup

    Hi,
My Indesign CS5.5 (I'm running Macosx 10.6.7) hangs on startup and gets this crash log: http://pastebin.com/xDXmdrt4
I've tried removing the recovery folder, the settings prefs and the FontExplorer plugin... nothing helps.
    Anyone?
    /Erlandsen

Mikkel, if the problem goes away with a new account, it is almost certainly a problem with your ~/Library folder, and reinstalling InDesign does not touch that, so it is no surprise the reinstall did not help.
If you truly removed all the folders I specified, then I'm quite surprised it didn't fix it. Sometimes it is a permissions problem -- you
might check the permissions on those folders with Get Info in the Finder, and maaaaaaaybe try running Disk Utility's Repair Permissions (usually a waste of time).
If not, well, try moving *everything* out of  your Library/ folder, and then putting it back bit-by-bit (well, half-by-half). This may be a somewhat unpleasant and potentially destructive process.

  • Itunes is hanging at startup how do I fix?

Itunes is hanging at startup message cannot find ~ amazon url

    Hi,
Try a Reset of the Phone...
    Turn the Phone Off...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
The Apple logo will Appear and then Disappear...
    Usually takes about 10 - 15 Seconds...
    Turn the Phone On...
If that does not help... See the Information in this Link:

  • Wl server hangs at startup

    Hi:
I'm using WLServer 8.1sp2. It's been working fine up until a couple of hours ago
when it started to hang during startup. Not sure if it was caused by an improper
    shutdown, but I have rebooted.
Basically, I'm not getting any info at all out of log files or the system.out.
It gets to one point, freezes and nothing else happens. Is there some sort of
verbose option I can set to perhaps get some debugging information. Basically
the server output stops at the line shown below:
    [java] <Jan 16, 2004 3:54:52 PM MST> <Notice> <WebLogicServer> <BEA-000327> <Starting
WebLogic Admin Server "mcdataserver1" for domain "mcdata">
    thanks for any help. Jon

If nothing has changed on the server in terms of config.xml changes then it sounds
to me like resources. Are running a single instance or many within your server/domain?
When a JVM starts up, it has certain heap sizes and port resources to grope. Perhaps
there is not enough memory for the heap?

  • Firefox hangs upon startup

When I try to start firefox it does nothing. Via CLI it does the same - nothing. It just sits there and appears to be hung up. No pid, nada.
Deleted ~/.mozilla and tried to run firefox -profilemanager. Same thing, just hangs.
Tried to run firefox -v just to see if it return the version -no joy. Hangs.
no locks present and did a killall firefox before each attempt.
Uninstalled via yum and reinstalled via yum. Same.
Is there a log file I can view to try to determine whats hanging upon startup?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
    <b> To Enable SafeMode </b>
*You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
*''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")

  • Powerbook Suddenly Hanging

My problem started a couple weeks ago when my powerbook would hang when (usually) closing applications or a few minutes after startup. I had a hard drive crash and the apple hardware test basically told me it was fried. After a couple days I happened to try again and could boot but would hang soon after. I also tried with the install cd (original) and was able to erase/repair the hard drive, minus the volumebit. I couldn't install os x again however. I bought a lacie external firewire drive, intending to at least get the computer working again through the end of the semester, but I'm unable to even get past the installer intro screen. It allows me to select the language, then reads all the packages, and hangs there. I can't open any menus, press continue (though it ungreys), but I can drag the window around. Or if I open disk utlity, it hangs when reading disks (so I couldn't format the new drive). I've tried a couple install cds that I know for sure work, but they all hang at the exact same places. I also tried installing mac os x from a friend's computer, but as it's an intel duo core it wants the drive partitioned as GUID and (I'm assuming) would just install a binary version of os that wouldn't run on my powerbook. Poor comp has never had a single problem until this suddenly came on.
I'm guessing there's some other hardware component that's having issues, but I have no idea what it is. I was running 10.5.6 with 1.25gb of ram. Processor was 1.0ghz I believe.

I recently got a hold of a Powerbook G4 12" with the same problem. I tried all the same stuff. I tried to do a hardware test but it hangs before any drive or disk is recognized, even any external drive connected via firewire. I have been able to get Diskwarrior to see external drives and was able to boot from the Install disk, but the Install disk hangs before I can reinstall the OS. I'm working on it but I'm afraid it may be an issue with the logic board. Have you tried replacing the hard drive? That's going to be my next step. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Hello Comunity!
my address book is hanging on startup and the windows turns white.
No way to use them or normally quit the application.
Got a brand new iMac and i just imported all my contacts from my old iBook.

I searched for solutions in other topics and find some similar issues (see [1]). But no one of them helps me.
See [2] for the error's reported on the console.
Any suggestion is - really - welcome.

You show your Address Book version as 4.2.1 - is it in fact 4.1.2?
Try dragging the folder AddressBook from Library/Application Support in your home folder to the desktop. Does Address Book start?
    AK
Yes, you are right. version 4.1.2 (700).
And Yes! Moving the directory to the desktop work fine.
He started showing me only 2 contact (default apple contact and me) but after 2-3 seconds he loaded all my 300 contacts again. Thanks!
    But, What now?
have noticed that he has created the directory again, whith less files in 'Metadata' and without the file 'MailRecents-v4.abcdmr'.
Can i delete the directory on my desktop?

  • 10.4.1  hangs after startup - 64-bit Win7

I tried reinstalling iTunes as my CDs were not showing up in iTunes.  The system is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.  Now iTunes hangs at startup . . . all I see is the beginning of a translucent window.  I've uninstalled, reboot, reinstalled many times.

Bump. Also an update: I found out that iTunes doesn't hang all the time when I tell it to close, only when I have the visualizer going, not in full screen mode. Hope that might help anything.
    Thanks,
    Carter
