Powered USB charging issue

I purchased a Dynex powered USB hub. It's a four port hub and works fine for my M-Audio interface, my iPod Touch 5th gen, iPod Classic... basically anything I plug into it. However, when I plug in my iPad2 it connects to iTunes fine and transferring files is okay, but a message pops up beside the battery icon saying "iPad not charging".
If I unplug the powered USB hub from the wall all the other devices continue to work, but now the iPad is completely unrecognized.
I've tried resetting the iPad and unplugging all the other devices.
It's a drag having this hub in an easy to reach location and still having to reach over to my MacBook in the farthest corner of my desk to plug in my iPad.
Any thoughts/suggestions? Is this common? Should I try another hub at the risk of waisting more money?
Thanks for any feedback.
MacBook 2008 latest Lion, iPad2 (late model) latest IOS 6

The power output from the hub is not the required 10W to charge the iPad (it is charging, but very slowly).
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Usb charging issue

my incredible charges fine plugged into a wall charger, but when I plug it into my computer to usb charge it cycles through charging/not charging, and it also seems to be an issue with my car charger, I thought the charger was bad but the issue seems to be happening now with my computer also..
    any clues?
    tia

    solved
I went into the verizon store and they told my my phone was no good and I need to replace it, I had a real hard time believing that to be the case and with nothing to lose I played around with the power cables.
I took a pair of needle nose pliers and lightly squeezed the end of the mini usb cable and the problem is solved.
Very disapointed with the verizon store trying to just sell me a new phone, and not even trying to have me try a new car/usb charger.

  • USB Charging Issue after iOS 7.1.1

I have the iPhone 5 and installed iOS 7.1.1 last week. Since the upgrade, my iPhone won't charge in the USB connector in my vehicle. I have a brand new vehicle this year and everything was working fine prior to the upgrade. I even tried other USB ports in my vehicle and other cords to narrow down my possibilities. Any suggestions?  Thanks.

I have the exact same problem. My iPhone 5S will no longer charge from a Jackery battery pack or my vehicle USB port, using original Apple cables.
I've seen postings here explaining that the charging in 7.1.1 has been made to check the chip in the charging cable, because of people getting electrocuted using off-brand chargers. But it seems that Apple are no checking both the cable and the charger, refusing to charge unless both are Apple branded.
This is in my mind a terrible decision for the user experience, as it means that heavy, loyal and mobile Apple users are a) forced to carry around an Apple charger and b) need to plan their day around the availability of power outlets. My Jackery made sure I could still show my (mobile app based) train ticket and surf the web on the train ride home, even though I had not charged during the day. No more, it seems. Also, forget about using your iPhone on multi-day wilderness treks. No mains power? No iPhone for you.
My reason for buying Apple was to accept restricted choice in return for a superior user experience. This is restricted choice AND a poorer experience. Seriously, guys, you can do better.
My entire family is Apple-based now, but if this does not change our next communications devices won't start with an "i".

  • Droid X - USB charging problems?

Is anyone aware of USB charging issues with the droid X?
i'm an IT consultant, one of my customers recently got a droid X.
the battery died on them when on the road and the phone would not turn itself on.
when connected directly to a USB port on a PC or a generic USB car charger (where it provides a usb port to plug your typical data cable in to), it did not show the graphic that the phone was charging, nor would it power up.
This was a big issue, when on the road they need to be able to plug it in to a usb port in their car or a computer and be able to turn it on and talk while it's charging.
I tested with other phones (samsung galaxy s, blackberry storm) and it was able to charge fine off both this PC and charger so i know it's not the port that's the issue.
When plugging it in to a wall outlet, it showed the graphic that the battery was at 0%, then it would power up.
i let it charge for awhile and after that i was able to transfer it over to a PC and it would stay up and it would be charging.
Why wouldn't it just charge and power up when originally plugged in to a car charger or a computer's USB port?
For other phones on the market i've been able to just plug in to the computers' usb port and it allows you to turn it on and it charges, etc.
It almost seems that the Droid X really requires more power than a usb port provides.
    thanks.

Business people who are on the road all day cannot afford to have their phone not boot until they can use a wall charger if the battery dies, it's as simple as that.
Both Verizon and Motorola should make this issue well known instead of acting like it's not a problem and it doesn't exist.
Verizon support had no answers and referred me to motorola.
Motorola tier 2 support had no ideas and recommended that the phone was defective and we should work with the carrier to get a replacement.
From what i'm reading it is a known problem and they should be very up front when someone calls about it rather than starting the blame game between the carrier and manufacturer.
People are entitled to their opinion on if a phone not being able to boot off of usb power is a good idea or not, no need to get upset.
Personally I think that standardizing everything on usb makes sense so that customers could boot/charge off of any device that has usb or a wall adapter that provides a usb port.  Things are starting to move in that direction with newer cars including USB ports for charging purposes,  etc.

  • U430 powered USB 2.0 port charges devices but does not recognizze

I just got a U430.  I noticed that any devices plugged into the powered USB port on the right side of the computer will charge, but the computer does not recognize them.  I tried disabling/enabling all the USB hubs in the Device Manager, unselected the option to have Windows turn them off to save power, and did the same in the BIOS.  I can't seem to update the drivers as it says they are all the most recent ones.  Any thoughts?  This seems like a recurrent problem with other Lenovo products, and I don't see a real solution in most of the threads.  The OP just stops replying.

  • Will an Apple Iphone 3g charge from a Powered USB Hub while the computer is

    Hello,
Will an Apple Iphone 3g charge from a Powered USB Hub while the computer is sleeping?
I have a Motorola SLVR L7, two BCK-08 Bluetooth Stereo Headsets and two iPower Secondary iPhone batteries that all charge from my Powered USB Hub while my main computer is sleeping.
It would seem that my iPhone 3g will not charge from a Powered USB Hub while the computer attached to it is sleeping?
Is there any way to get an Iphone 3g to charge from a PoWeReD UsB HuB while the computer it is attached to is sleeping?
I'm thinking in terms of greening things ... but this is making me leave a 170 Watt computer running while I sleep ... I don't use the computer much while asleep ...
    Thanks for your time,
    Bobby

    How 'linux' is OS X?
In linux you can get a lot of USB information by typing "+lsusb -v+"
    or through "/proc/bus/usb/devices"
(but they would both list everything connected via USB)
if you knew the vendor and device id you could type as an example
    +(laptop:/proc/bus/usb) # lsusb -v -d 050d:805c+
    +Bus 001 Device 008: ID 050d:805c Belkin Components+
    +Device Descriptor:+
    +idVendor 0x050d Belkin Components+
    +idProduct 0x805c+
    +bcdDevice 0.01+
    +iManufacturer 1 Ralink+
    +iProduct 2 802.11 n WLAN+
    or
    /proc/bus/usb/devices
    +T: Bus=01 Lev=02 Prnt=03 Port=02 Cnt=01 Dev#= 8 Spd=480 MxCh= 0+
    +D: Ver= 2.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1+
    +P: Vendor=050d ProdID=805c Rev= 0.01+
    +S: Manufacturer=Ralink+
    +S: Product=802.11 n WLAN+
    +C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=80 MxPwr= 4mA+
In windows under details it lists the parent ID (port above) so if you found the USB port the iPhone was connected to ... you could find the hardware and vendor id or name of the hub it was plugged in to ...
I'm thinking it might be easier and more positive to start a thread requesting that anyone who has an iPhone that will charge from their computer through a USB Hub while that computer is sleeping ... but I don't know if I can start a thread with a title that long ...

  • Curve 8330 usb/charging port issues.

My 8330 just started to have problems with its usb/charge port. I plugged it in last night before bed like I always do, but when I woke up it hadn't charged a bit and wasn't even recognizing that it had been plugged in. I tried my USB data cable as well, and that didn't register either unless I wiggled the cord around and held it still once it did register. I eventually did get the phone to register that I had plugged it in, but I had to wiggle the cord just so and leave the charger half-way plugged in once I found the sweet spot.
It is a few years old and pre-owned, but this problem literally just cropped up. I haven't dropped it recently, and I only plug it in once a day. It has no problem holding a charge, but getting it to register the cord is a battle. Do I need to just replace it or is there a way to fix this? There are no other problems, just the port acting up. Thanks!

You can try contacting Sprint for repair options for your device.

  • IPad 3 charging issues

I have had my shiny new iPad plugged in overnight with it's included iPad charger  (it was displaying some context for some of that).
I have just woken up and it's only at 39%!!!! Now I know that it's meant to take longer to charge but that is unbelievable!?
As I said I'm using the lead and charger it came with, the only exception is I'm also using a usb extension lead inbetween as the plug is quite far away. I used the same lead with my iPad 2 every night and it charged fine and fast.
It also kept displaying not charging when plugged into my PC (which is definitely high powered ports).
Should I be booking a genius bar appointment do you think!?
    Thanks!

This is a genuine issue and needs to be addressed.
Yesterday, launch day, I received a white AT&T 32GB 4G version, but I found the color distracting and AT&T lied to me and I got no signal at all where I live.  I was actually able to take it to my local store midday and exchange it for a black Verizon model.  The Verizon is screaming fast.
Anyway, they both have the same charging issues so this is a definite problem with all iPads, or the iPad chargers supplied.  I believe Apple will have to send us all replacement chargers.  While using my iPad, even plugged into the 10W charger and with the cellular data radio turned off, doing nothing more than typing on this very forum with all other apps closed, the battery drains at a rate of about 5% every half hour.... WITH THE CHARGER PLUGGED IN!  The charger is active and the lightning bolt battery icon is up there.  The iPad will only charge when the device is fully powered down.  Even if it is in standby the unit will not charge when plugged in.  This is either an OS bug that needs to be fixed or the charger supplied is not nearly adequate.
The iPad charger will charge my iPhone 4S rapidly, even when in use.  It also charged my previous iPad 2 in a decent amount of time.  But this 10W charger certainly does not charge the iPad while on, and the iPad certainly does not get 10 hours of use with or without the charger plugged in,
This is a serious issue and one that needs to be address promptly.  Apple needs to send us all higher wattage chargers, issue an OS fix, or take care of whatever the problem is.
They also obviously didn't think the new iPad development through.  The unit gets quite warm when in use and quite hot when the cellular is on.  Also, the display does not get as bright as the iPhone 4S, and several people at the Apple Store agreed with me on all these issues.
Unless Apple wants to see a lot of returns and unhappy consumers, they need to fix this issue pronto.  In the time it's taken me to type this post the power has gone down another 3%, with the charger plugged in and supposedly charging.  Something is seriously wrong here.

  • Nano 3G charging issue, some things will charge it, some won't

Here is my issue, I hope someone here can help:
My daughter has a 8gb Nano. In the last week, it will not charge consistently.
She has an Altec Lansing speaker set that charged the Nano until this week, now it will not charge her Nano, but it will charge my iPod Classic 160gb, so that tells me the speakers are okay.
I have a different Altec Lansing speaker set that will charge my Classic, but it does not charge her Nano.
The computer USB cable will charge her Nano.
I have a dock plugged into the wall with the remote and connected to a stereo. It will charge both of our iPods.
I have a AC Adapter that will charge mine and not hers.
I have a cig lighter adapter that will charge mine, but not hers.
Lastly, she has an iHome clock/radio, that will charge both hers and mine.
I have restored her iPod, reset it, replaced all the music on it, still it will not charge on her Altec Lansing speakers, yet mine will.
Anyone have any ideas I can try before I assume it is her iPod?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Okay, have been reading some more and found an article that says that the connector on an iPod has firewire charging and USB charging capabilities. I am of the opinion now that something on her iPod went bad and it won't charge with devices that are firewire powered, but still work with USB powered devices. Apparently, lots of devices charge via firewire and Apple told manufacturers three years ago to abandon firewire and switch to USB.
I wonder if there is a setting somewhere to enable firewire charging that I need to turn on for her ipod that somehow got turned off?

  • Battery charge issues

I have troubleshooted for several days with little resolution. My 30gb Ipod will not charge fully.
I am connected to a USB with AC adapter to provide additional power. When the Ipod is connected to either the port or directly with firewire the charging icon appears and the unit begins to charge. It also displays do not disconnect. However, after approximately 1 minute, the icon dissapears and it stops charging. My pc connects and updates fine, it just won't charge.
How can I get it to remain in charge mode until fully charged?

I am connected to a USB with AC adapter to provide
    additional power.
By this, do you mean you are plugged into a powered USB hub? If so, that is likely your problem. Even a powered hub often doesn't put out enough to charge an iPod. I'd suggest springing for an actual AC adapter for the iPod.

  • IPod Touch 4g USB Charging Cable(s!) Not Working. Went through 5 in a year.

I've had my 8 gb iPod Touch 4g since November 12th, 2010. I bought it from Target (so its not covered under warranty anymore) love it and use it for many hours every day, but there is a problem with the USB charging cables.
When I got my iPod, it came with the standard Apple charging cable. That cable worked for a few months (maybe... 3?) and all of a sudden stopped working. When I used my friends cord, it worked perfectly fine. She had the same exact model and cord as I did. I ended up just buying a replacement cord, thinking that this was just a fluke or whatever. No such deal. I purchased a third party cord from amazon, and it worked for a few months again. (Let me note that I also got a car and wall charger with it, those work perfectly fine to this day.) Once again, all of a sudden it broke. And again, I tried a friend's cord and it worked fine.
I ended up buying a third and fourth cords, which was also third party, and after that broke, I was fed up and went to the Genius Bar for an appointment. I explained my problem, and they made an appointment with me. Eventually, they just said to buy another cord, this time Apple brand. I did, and it has been working fine up until tonight, when it just stopped charging.
    When I say that the cords broke, I mean that all of a sudden they would stop charging my iPod, no matter where I plugged it in. (computer, wall, car, etc.) It would/will only charge if I bent it a very certain way, and then I would need to hold it there, which I obviously can't do for hours. (;
I would take this apple cord back now, since I believe there is a warranty (although, I need to double check that when I can get to the papers.) if it weren't for the fact that, from use, the coating/white plastic of the actual cord has split and you can see a few of the wires. I will have to double-check if this is covered, though because of the outside appearance, I doubt that they would take it back. This has not happened with any of the other cords, however.
What should I do? Would restoring help this problem? I have been contemplating the idea for a while, but having to re-download/etc all of my apps, music, etc., is not the most appealing idea to me.. I have reset a few things a while back, though I cannot remember what they are, sadly.
Currently, my iPod is running iOS 5, as I just updated it about a month or so ago. Before that, it was running what the iPod touch 4g originally came with... I believe it was 4.2.1?
I really love my iPod, but am fed up with having to buy cords every few months, as I have gone through four or five in just a year.

I think stevejobsfan has misunderstood your problem.
You specifically state that in one case you can see the inner cord and wires of the lead. So, either - you are mis-handling the cord or a pet is chewing it. So, if you don't have a pet - it's you.
When you remove the cord from the iPod (or from the other end of it) you should handle by the plug, not the cord itself. If you pull the cord you are straining the connection between the cord and the plug and that will eventually cause that connection to break.
If this had happened to just one cord, maybe it's the cord. If it happened to several of the same make from the same source, perhaps it may have been a faulty batch. But for it to happen five times, with cords from different sources and different manufacturers - everything points to the cord being handled too roughly.
Buy another cord - but in future, remove it by gripping the plug and not by pulling on the cord. This applies to any cord or lead, including mains powered devices. If you have any other cords for any other product, I suggest you check them for damage because damaged cords can be a fire risk and create a risk of electric shock. Mains voltage can kill.
Another thought; if you wrap cords - including headphone leads - around anything (such as the charger itself), wrap it loosely. A tight wrap also strains the cord to plug connection.

  • Even genuine iphone 5 usb charging cable does not work for an year?

I have bought an iphone 5 last year. With it, came the  original apple genuine iphone 5 lightning USB cable. It did not last for half year. I had to buy another original apple iphone 5 similar cable and it was gone within 3 months. I dont understand is it cable manufacturing problem? is apply selling fake cables? It is really annoying and I am really angry that such a reputed company cant give/ provide proper long lasting cables.
My experience with these two genuine cables was that after some months of  usage, i used to observe even if its plugged it would not charge, or if you push it hard its charging. Firstly, I never keep my phone charging all time. Then how the hack can the charging cable die? or problem arise. I bought the phone and the charging cables when I was germany. I had to buy a 20 euro local companys USB charging cable after above two stopped working with no signs of damage. I have also tried cleaning the charging jack or socket where cable is inserted. It did not help. This local charging cable started to torn out automatically and it got fully damaged, Now I am in India, I bought another cable of 10 euros and it is just two days, it would not charge again.
I am really furious now whether you use original or local USB cables they dont last for even a week? what the ****?
Do I need to really pay for those portable charger with a big price tag, that my problem will be solved? very very upset. I never have any complaint with the phone, but the charging catastrophies, really ****** me off. I think of going back to other mobile brands like samsung or nokia where there is never a charging issue or battery drainage issue once you charge its goes for days or it  is also expensive buy a nokia or samsung charger if lose it or break it. but for iphones its really bugging situation and not just me many people around the world are having sick problem with iphone brand with charging ISSUES.
APPLE PLEASE SORT THE PROBLEM OR SELL the PORTABLE IPHONE CHARGERS (WIRELESS) CHEAPER so that we dont have to use these silly little lightning cables. or I fear my APPLE I PHONE 5 is not genuine or its FAKE.
    PLEASE HELP>

Look closely at the way you handle the cables. I have never had any cable, Apple or third-party, fail on me.

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2012 USB 3 Issue...

Hello there! Recently I was working on a music recording production and I was using a Usb 2.0 hub on my mac. Everything was working nicely until something suddenly happened. My Hub stopped working and my Mac went shutdown. When I turned on my Mac, It didn't recognize the hub and figured out that my hub was damaged because I tested it on another Mac. But the wierd thing is that my Mac now doesn't recognize any bus powered USB 2.0 device but it recognize 2.0 devices that are plugged in a power source and also recognize Usb 3.0 devices… I would like to know if there's some explanation about this wierd thing. Thanks for your help in advance!

You can try a PRAM reset but this is probably a hardware issue that will have to be resolved at an Apple store genius bar.
