Powermac 8500 Problems

I recently tried to reinstall Mac OS 9 on my Powermac 8500 because I had been having Errors in startup. These errors were, Address Error, Bus Error, Apple CD/DVD extension Error, Apple Audio Extension Error or the login box wouldn't appear. I tried to Reinstall using my Retail Mac Os 9.0.4 Cd and kept getting tome errors. I have finally got it to install off a backup of my retail CD (it had tome errors too)(I swapped my cd drive with anoter one from another powermac 8500 after it ate my OS 9 CD) and have upgraded it to 9.1 but am still getting the Address Error occasionally and a Bus error when Disk First Aid checks if it wasn't shut down properly. I have 2 USB cards in my powermac 1 is a DSE USB 1.0 card with an Opti 82C861 Firelink chip and the other one is a Digitus Connect USB 1.1 card with the Opti 82C861 Firelink chip. It was working fine before I put in my Digitus Connect USB card last month. My computer also sometimes freezes sometimes as soon as it gets to the desktop (the seconds on the clock stop flashing)
Could this mean that my Usb card is interfering with my computer or my Scsi cable is damaged or my drives are dying.
My drives are set up like this on the fast Scsi Bus
1.2 Gig hard disk ID 0 terminated
1.2 Gig hard disk ID 1
CD-ROM Drive ID 3 terminated
Pci Cards
Slot B (middle one) Digitus Connect Usb 1.1 card
Slot 3 (bottom one) DSE Usb 1.0 card
I have a Sonnet Cresendo 300Mhz G3 Processor
4 Mb VRAM
8 8MB RAM cards
flat PRAM battery
and the av card.
I live in New Zealand
Thanks for reading this.

Could there have been a problem with the G3 processor cards, which forced the school to retire these 8500s from the fleet - or were they considered technologically obsolete? Is there any discoloration on the gold-plated pins on either or both sides of the processor card? If the card's pins aren't a bright gold color, I'd gently clean them with a soft white eraser. Be sure that all eraser shavings are blown off, prior to reinstalling the card. Another possibility is that the Sonnet card is overheating, causing the system to become unstable. I'd remove the heat sink and inspect the thermal compound, to see if it has dried up. You can clean off any residual compound with alcohol and then apply some new compound. The Arctic Silver product is reportedly better than the older, white type. The DIMMs' memory chips will have markings, indicating manufacturer and part number. If you find a variety of info when comparing the memory, it's a mixed bag. Is this 8500 just a project computer and would you want to invest any money in it, to get it working? Considering the minimal value of an 8500 with a malfunctioning G3 processor card, you might be wise to recycle it, rather than spending anything on hardware upgrades.

  • Powermac 8500 Flat Panel Monitor Options

I have a PowerMac 8500 and my Apple Multiple Scan 15 monitor is making noises, the green power button flashes, the image distorts bowing inward on the left side, or the screen doesn't light up at all.
What Apple branded flat panel monitors can be driven by my computer? The Mac 8500 has a DB 15 connector, I believe.
Would I need an adapter to connect the flat panel display, and which adapter?
I have 2 Apple Flat panel 17"? monitors that came with my G4's I could test, if I had an adapter. Is this a good idea?
    Thanking you in advance.

You don't need to buy an Apple display. Any brand LCD display can be used with a Mac, provided that the computer had adequate graphics support for it, with a suitable hardware interface. If you buy a used display, be sure that it can be returned if there are any problems (like dead pixels). When you consider the initial cost of shipping and possible cost to return a bad display, I'd be reluctant to buy a used one at eBay. Many sold there are high-mileage units pulled from corporate use. If there are any retailers in your area selling used computers, I'd check with them first. At least you'd get to try it out before buying and avoid shipping expenses. Otherwise, the prices of new displays have dropped so much that buying one for your 8500 isn't money wasted, since the display can be used with any newer computer that you might purchase.
Have you ever added VRAM to your 8500? It shipped with (2) factory-installed 1 MB VRAM cards, and is maxed out at 4 MBs with an additional pair of 1 MB VRAM cards. You might want to consider installing a Mac-compatible PCI graphics card having onboard SGRAM or DDR-memory, to provide better performance for a newer display. If you go with an older graphics card, you'd be better off buying a display with the standard 4:3 aspect ratio - like your old Apple display. The optimal resolution setting for a widescreen display (16:9 aspect ratio) may not be supported by older graphics cards. Two old (but still good) graphics cards are the ATI Rage Pro (8 MBs of SGRAM) or the ATI Rage128 (16 MBs of SGRAM). Both of these cards have a VGA port, eliminating the need for an adapter. You could find these for very little at eBay - but they must be Mac-compatible versions. Cards pulled from PCs aren't compatible, unless they can be re-programmed with a Mac ROM. A newer graphics card, like the Radeon 9200, would be capable of supporting any modern display, but costs more than your 8500 is worth. That's when you should consider investing the $$ in a slightly newer, used Mac (like a G4 tower) with AGP graphics.

  • Powermac 8500 USB Card

I have bought a PCI USB card for my Powermac 8500. The Card has a Opti 82C861 Firelink chip. This card works with my USB Mouse, Keyboard and Gamepad and I would like to use USB pendrives with my computer. I have tried with my Digitor 2gig USB pendrive but I don't think it is being detected properly. Would this be possible?
The USB card is the only PCI card I have installed in my mac in the bottom slot.
I reinstalled Mac OS 9.0.4 and upgraded it to 9.1 after I installed my USB card.
The installed drivers are whatever Mac OS 9.0.4 and 9.1 have installed and also the USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1

Because the "USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1" drivers pre-date the OS 9.1 Update, you should not use that installer beyond OS 8.6. OS 9.1 provides broader USB support and its included drivers can be manually installed on systems running OS 8.6 for better recognition of devices. You should find the following drivers in the Extensions folder, with #2 being essential for functionality of USB flash/hard drives:
    (1) USB Support
    (2) USB Mass Storage Support
    (3) USB Device Extension
    (4) USB Software Locator
    (5) HID Library
    (6) SerialShimLib
    (7) ENETShimLib
How many ports are on the card? On older legacy Macs, I generally installed USB 1.1 cards having 2 ports. An external powered hub is useful, if there are many devices to connect - especially a bus-powered hard drive. I'd also recommend installing more memory. OS 9.1 could use a little more than 64 MBs of installed memory.

  • PowerMac 7300 Problems: Browser, Accessing Hotmail, Freezing

We have an ancient PowerMac 7300, with a G3 500Mhz upgrade. I know that some people will tell us to simply get a new(er) computer, but that is not an option right now.
We are having problems accessing many websites, including Hotmail, which we use a lot. We keep getting messages telling us that our web-browsers need to be upgraded. We use mostly Internet Explorer and Netscape.
Are there any other browsers that might run better, and allow us access to more websites with fewer problems? I'm running System 9.1, with 200MB RAM. There are two internal HDs, the main one we use, with System 9.1, is a 40GB, the other HD is a 6GB, with System 8.6.
This old beast still runs great, other than freezing frequently, especially when we try to access the Internet. Thanks for any suggestions.
-- vja4Him *Mac Addict for Christ*

I've also used the final version of Internet Explorer (5.1.7) for pre-OS X Macs, but it was last updated in 2002 - which makes it incompatible with some web sites. Additionally, Microsoft dropped support for it and pulled the download links from their web site. The first thing that you need to do is allocate more memory to it, because the default "Preferred" memory setting is ridiculously low. You should set it to at least 20-25 MBs as a comfortable amount, since you have enough System memory to be generous. With the program not running, click on its icon to highlight it and select "Get Info - Memory" from the File drop-down menu. Adjust the "Preferred" setting to an amount between 20480K and 25600K. This should prevent freezes and permit the program to run more smoothly, but it won't change the fact that it's an old browser with expired security certificates. Netscape Communicator is known to be a bloated alternative to IE. Others Forum regulars have posted their evaluations of the other browsing options available to pre-OS X users, but those programs are also succumbing to age and a lack of ongoing development.

  • Msi 6565 max fisr gnb and ATI 8500 problems..

    hi,
Ive got a big problem, i put my new mobo in with a new processor and when i boot up the system, there is no response on my monitor, i have tried the following.
    different monitor
different video card (current one is radeon 8500 128mb version)
isolating everything but the vid card and the mobo (taking off all HD, floppy, etc.
what else should i try? its becoming very frustrating?  is it possible that i didnt recieved the correct p4? how do i tell if it is infact a northwood? should it say on the box or os there some other way that i should know... one thing that i think im worried about is that my video card might be using 3.3v and the mobo doesnt support 3.3v on the agp....i think ir ead that somewhere...any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Corsair 333 Mhz DDR is an excelent choice but can be a little pricey.  That is what I am using with the same board and it is rock solid.  Any 333 Mhz DDR ram from a major manufacturer will work great on that board.  You can use 266 Mhz DDR as well if you do not overclock anything but the savings in price are usually not enough to matter.  Make sure whatever ram you use is NOT registered (registered and buffered are the same thing).  2 exactly matched modules will give the best performance on that board.  I still think the problem you are having is the video card.

  • Laserwriter 8500 problem

I have a laserwriter 8500 with duplexer and extra paper tray connected via ethernet to a cable router that is connected to an original dual 2 gig cheesegrater. When I try to print, I get the message "printer not responding" The status lights alternate between the green ready light and all 4 status lights lit. This continues without end. When you first turn it on all turn yellow, the top 2 (furthest from you) go out, the ready light turns green and the other three go out, they all turn yellow and the pattern continues from there (4 yellow-1 green-4 yellow-1 green…). The two little lights on the logic board The rear-most stays lit, while the front one comes on once, goes out and then blinks seven times and repeats the sequence. It won't print a startup page but will print a test page either with the green jumper in the serial port or the paperclip in the back trick. The print is clear and clean and done with a fresh toner cart. I removed the RAM and it did not change anything. Using the jumper doesn't change the pattern. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as to replace a unit like this these days would break the bank.
    Thanks, Ted

Thank you Grant! I had forgotten that such problems are mechanical in origin. Your suggestion set me on the right track. For some reason, however, I still find it impossible to get the printer to recognize the paper in the cassette. I HAVE found a work around, though, which is to turn the paper sideways: the printer DOES recognize it. Perhaps one part of the switch is broken. I wonder if anyone knows a source of information about the correct orientation of the white plastic wheels on the side of the tray that seem to be the "bumps." They change as I move the guides backward and forward. At any rate, this has helped a lot and I very much appreciate your help and quick response!!!!!!!

  • P7N Diamond, Bios P07, QX9650, 8GB PC-8500 problem

Read through main fo the topics in this forum, and tried to identify similar problems, but seem not to be successful.
P7N Diamond board, with the nwest beta P07 bios.
    QX9650 quad chip,
and patriot PC2-8500 2GB memory sticks.
    2x EVGA 88800GTS-512 (G92) video cards.
So first I flashed the new bios, with only 2 memory sticks in 0, 2 slot, I get  post with just fail safe settings, and SLI ready memory enable, which the vendor claims these stikcs can do.
I boot, but the CPU bounces around between 6x and 8x.
If I add 2 more memory sticks to come to 8GB total, I crash during boot in Vista 64.
So remove 2 sticks again, and try to play with bios settings to get anything stable, but... nothing.
    Any ideas, help.
    Thanks much.

It's normal for your speeds to fluctuate.  It is speedstep(EIST) in action.  It lowers your cpu speed to save power when it isn't doing anything or a light load.  You can disable it in your BIOS if you want and it should run full speed at all times.
Can you boot into Vista with 1 video card and be stable?
What power supply are you using?  It sounds like you are lacking enough power to run both those cards.  Make and Model number for PSU.
You may also need to manually setup your memory timings.  DDR2 memory has a top limit and it is PC2-6400.  Anything over that limit is overclocking and may need adjusting to get them to run.
Make sure you only have keyboard, mouse, and monitor plugged for testing to help eliminate other issues.
Can you make a signature with all your computer components listed similar to the one I have below.  it will help us help you.  It's sometimes hard to help when you don't have enough information.

  • Powermac 8500 won't start.

Ok, here goes. OS 9.1 installed. Went to use Techtool today to optimize the disk. As always, with my machine, I had to go to the start up disk and choose CD. It will not start from the CD simply by pressing the "C" during start up. Started fine and the program ran fine. Once done however, it said that it was highly recommended that I restart the computer before proceeding as the program had to quit running certain things to optimize the disk. I restarted and now the computer will not start. It doesn't find the System software on the hard drive because the last thing I told it was to start from the CD. Now, however, it doesn't see the CD either. So it just sits there looking for the system software. I need to get the computer started from the CD in order to tell it to start from the System software on the hard drive. How can I do this? I've restarted many times, holding the "C" key but it doesn't see the CD drive. I'm stuck.

Thanks for the info. I tried it all. I replaced the battery as well as used the command that you gave me. Nothing worked. I checked the CD for the ID and the plugs where set in slot 0 and 1. Slot 2 was open and while there was a line running to another pin set there was not a number 3 printed on it. I tried changing it around but nothing helped there either. It cannot find software anywhere so it just sits there. The CD never gets loaded as the disk can be ejected at any time. Seems strange that this all ocurred after Techtool checked everything and it was OK. Once the optimization was finished and I was instructed to restart, it all failed. Any other ideas?

  • P45 platinium and OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 problems w/ 4 x 1 gig but not 2 x 1

I have an MSI P45 Platinum with 2 gigs (2 x 1 gig) running at 5-5-5-15, 1:1.2 1066/800 voltage on auto and it's passing Memtest86 tonight. I will keep iot running all night. This system was stable till I tried adding 2 more gigs for a toal of 4 x 1 gig. It will not POSt with all chips installed. I tried everything and MSI is not a big help. OCZ told me to do 6-6-6-18 at 2.1 - 2.2v and run it at 800 and maybe raise the NB voltage up to 1.4v. None of that worked.
The system just will not POSt with 4 chips installed. I am memtesting the new RAM chips all night.
This really pisses me off. What happend to the days when you just stick the memory in and all auto settings were fine. I am not an over clocker, I just want my PC to work!
    HELP!
    CPU is a Q9550

    kourosh,
    It did not work.
Anyway OCZ told me (via online support portal) that since the memory kits don't work together, I should contact the seller (NewEgg) and try to exchange for matching memory. I repeated my my statement in fact that they do work when mixed... just not all 4 gigs. They replied with the same comment, albeit more detailed. I repeated the fact and asked them to make it clear that they can do nothing more for me. They tod me again that since the memory kits don't work together and they past my Memtests, they are not defective so they can't grant an RMA. I repeated the fact (AGAIN) that they do work together. I am waiting for another reply. I think I am done with this company's memory for future purchases. I just want them to be straight and they can't even do that. I'd have more respect for them and prbably make future purchases if they were just straight forward. After all, Business is Business.

  • CD problems on B&W G3 running classic OS 9.2.2

I have a B&W G3 with Panther and OS 9.2.2 installed, and that has the original Matshita CR-589 CD-ROM drive that came from Apple. I am trying to get some "old school" games running, but have run into some problems. Panther can see the CD, but Classic does not recognize that anything is in the drive.
A quick look at the system using System Profiler indicates that the OS9 Drivers are not installed. Is there a way to get and install these drivers so that my Classic environment will see the CD in the drive? If so, does anyone know where I may find them, and how to install them in the classic environment? Am I correct in stating that I can simply place them in the Extensions folder and make sure they are turned on via the Extension Manager? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   B&W G3, PowerMac 8500, Quadra 700

I decided this by the fact that System Profiler states "OS9 Drivers: No" in the list of attributes returned for the CD-ROM drive.
To me, and maybe just to me, the term "old school", as it relates to games on the mac, refers to games that predate OSX and that run under System 7.0 through System 9.2.2. I would consider games running on OS1, System 3, Finder 5 through System 6.0.8 as being "really old school", but those are my self imposed definitions. For others, it may mean games that date back to the Apple LisaOS, Apple IIe, the Apple I, or it may have no meaning at all.
The particular game is question is a System 9.x compatible game.
Looking at my original post, I can not see where I said that these CDs are different from any other CDs. I stated that "Panther sees the CD, but Classic does not recognize that anything is in the drive." My Classic environment does not see any CD, be it "old school" or "new school".

  • Newbie problems with getting a local CFB server configured

This started out in another post by me as to what I thought was a port 8500 problem. I had watched the getting started with CFB video, and on that he used localhost as a Server Name and as Host Name. He then assigned port 8500 as the WebServer Port.
When I do this it comes up in the Servers windows as Stopped. If I try to start it the error I get is
'Starting localhost' has encountered a problem
Ensure that the server is not already running or any application is not using the webserver port.
So as an experiment I changed the port to 80 because the admin page does work at http://127.0.0.1/CFIDE/administrator/index.cfm
The Server window at the bottom of the CFB screen then shows a Running server.
I create a small "Hello World" index.cfm page and when I hit one of of the browser tabs, Firefox and IE in my case, I get the following error,
    Error while generating preview:
There is no server configured for the project myproject to which the file index.cfm belongs. Configure a server in ColdFusion in ColdFusion server settings before you proceed.
    What am I missing ?
    Thanks,
    Dennis

You need to tell CFB what server CFB should use in order to preview the file.
So you need to associate a server with this Project. To do so, right click on Project -> Properties -> ColdFusion Server Settings.
Here from the dropdown of 'Servers' select the server that you added in CFB.
Once that is done, ensure that your project is in document root of the server which in your case could be the Inetpub\wwwroot.
Once this is done the preview should work.

  • FCP Problem with Firewire output to external monitor and speaker ???Help

i have a g5 powermac. the problem is when using Final cut pro 4hd. when i output my work through firewire to my external monitor and speaker i have a problem with the audio signal. Theres feedback/noise/hiss from the speakers. The firewire connects to DSR-11 vtr deck which feeds my monitor and speakers. it only happens when in FCP is set to A/V firewire output. does not happen if Video output is not set to firewire.
I Diagnosis is that it is not my dsr-11 deck or firewire i've ruled those out. The problem is either FCP software or Hardware problem with my G5
Does anyone have a similar problem. please respone, i will try to answer any respones,
    Thanks

From the firewire that feeds the dsr-11. on the output, i use s-video cable to my monitor (sony pvm-14l) and High Quality rca cables thet feed the audio to the Roland Speakers.
I've changed all wires and still have audio problem. I,ve changed my Dsr-11 deck to my camcorder and still have the problem.
If any of u guys use FCP The problem happens When I select view> external Monitor > and select firewire for Audio/ and video. I have never changed my editing habits, something just went wrong with the signal, I think its a Hardware problem with the firewire connection. I'm Going to have to bring this to a Apple Service Center In my local area one day.

  • Laserwriter 8500 works on OS9 but not OSX

I have a laserwriter 8500 problem. I just bought a new G5 dual and I have the 8500 pluged in through a router. I can print 'only' using microsoft word that is running on classic. whenever i try to print with any other applications that either run on classic or native on OSX I get an out of paper error. The 8500 shows the yellow out of paper light even though the laserwriter has paper. I can go to my G4 that is on the same network and print to the same printer without the 'out of paper' error.
So bottom line is, for some reason running OSX, the ONLY way I can get the 8500 to print and not give the out of paper warning is to be priniting out of only one application, MS Word reunning on classic.
What gives? Obviously it is not the printer, as I can print in one application running classic, and I can print from another (G4) mac on the same network... What is really odd is that the printer shows lights indicating it is out of paper, and it does not change the green (OK) light to yellow until after I request printing on OSX in any application other that MSWord running on classic.
I would really appreciate so help

This printer must have one port of every description! Which of the many methods of cabling are you using to talk to this printer? Are you plugging and unplugging, or is the same cabling set-up used in each case?

  • How can I re-install my old SCSI card (2906)?

I think I should have asked for guidance here first but...
I'm trying to re-install my old SCSI card in my G4 (Dual 1 GHz - 1.5 GB Ram, 10.5.8), it worked fine a few years ago (under previous OS) but I can't seem to get it running now. The Profiler sees the card (Adaptec 2906) but says there is no driver. So I downloaded a driver from the Adaptec site (2930 - they say its the same as the 2906 driver), installed it, connected an old ZIP drive as a test - and yes I set the auto termination. Restarted and got a Kernel panic! - retried and got another panic!
Un-installed the driver, cleaned the cashes and reset permissions with Onyx, so I appear to be back to a stable system.
Anyone have any experience with SCSI cards? I would greatly appreciate any/all suggestions. I do have some experience with computers [Apple II+, SE30, IIFX, 8500 PowerMac, but this old head just can't get this figured out.
    Thanks in advance!

I thought I'd post this as an update and general information for others who might have a similar problem.
I have my old original Scsi card installed (Adaptec 2906), and it does work under 10.4.11 (my alternate/back-up system). I installed just "Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext" in the system/library/extensions folder and as long as I start my scanner before I boot into 10.4 everything seems to work just fine.
It's a bit of a pain to have to switch systems whenever I need to scan something, but I can live with it.
I tried to install the drivers in 10.5.8 but that doesn't work at all. If I install the whole Adaptec2930 package, I get a Kernel panic almost immediately. If I install just the "Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext", the card is not recognized. From what I've read on various sites is that 10.4 is the last OS that supports SCSI cards (or at least this Adaptec card). If someone has better/more information, I would appreciate hearing from them.
I contacted Adaptec tech support, but I have not as yet received a reply
In the end, things have worked out reasonably well. I have the use of my old reliable Agfa Scanner (Vuescan is great!), and my old Powermac 8500 is still functional enough for me to recover all my ancient tape archives.
An interesting little twist: Part of my incentive to re-install the old SCSI card was to recover my tape archives via Retrospect. But I discovered while searching for the drivers that Retrospect no longer supports the Adaptec cards, and hasn't for some time, so I could not have used it on my G4 anyway!
Now I'm saving my pennies for a new 27" iMac
