PPTPlex Features in Keynote

Hi
I stumbled upon pptplex (http://www.officelabs.com/pptplex) which adds a great feature to powerpoint which allows you to present in a non-linear format - a bit like a mindmap, with slides categorised according to type... I'm reasonably new to Keynote and wondered if some similar feature is available in Keynote?
I know in Keynote you can add slides as sub-slides which sort of keeps things grouped together, but this pptplex seems to go one step further and allows you to use left and right clicks when in presentation-mode to zoom in and out of particular sections and then sides within sections.
Thanks
Matt

Quite right - if only M$ would make it compatible with the Mac version of PPT... For those that are interested I also found www.prezi.com which is a completely different take of a giant canvas to contain the whole presentation - all online too - no software

  • Is there no gaussian blur transparency feature in keynote?

In keynote, you can make a shape transparent, but I also want to add a gaussian blur. I could have sworn this was a feature in keynote, but I can't seem to find it. Please tell me it exists, it's such a sleek effect and it would be a total shame if the Yosemite still hasn't added this feature. Currently on OS X Yosemite 10.10 with the newest version of Keynote (V. 6.5)

This used to be possible in the old version of Keynote. When you selected an image and went to the image properties, you could move the Sharpness drawer from the center to the left, thus creating a gaussian blur. In the current version the drawer is already on the left, so you could only sharpen the image.
It could be a bug, although one which has existed from the moment on they release the new Keynote back in 2013.

Do all animations and features of Keynote save as PowerPoint Presentations and are all of the animations and features then useable on a PC in the .ppt format, will it work properly?
I want to buy a Macbook Pro, but i need to know the scale of compatability between my Microsoft products and my soon to be apple products, proffessional presentations are vital for what i want, therefore compatability if key if i am to purchase a Mac. Thank you.

Not all of the animations and features in Keynote will transition into Powerpoint.  Most of the basic ones do - but not the advanced.  I had this issue when I first switched over to Mac, so to overcome this, I do two things:
I figured out which animations and transitions work in both Keynote and Powerpoint and used them.  It's kind of a pain when I can't use the awesome Keynote animations, however, Keynote is still much easier and intuitive to work in than Powerpoint.
I sometimes export my Keynote presentations to a Quicktime movie (.mov).  Apple makes it very simple to export to this format; which can then be accessed on both a Mac and PC and all of the transitions and effects remain as they are in Keynote.
    I hope that helps.

  • List of useful NEW features in Keynote '13

There's a long thread on features that are missing in the update.  Some changes are quite annoying.  However I'm also noticing a lot of useful new features beyond the top-level things that get reported in news articles.  Here are some.  Please add to the list.
Text boxes can take any shape so text flows in a specific way you want it to, such as around a curved shape — awesome special case of the next feature.
Format > Shapes and Lines > Make Editable allows you to edit bezier points of an object. Note: inconsistent functionality — weirdly, does not work for curves or connection lines, for example.
Vastly simpler and more beautiful way of editing Bezier points: simply hover mouse between two existing points and a new one appears for you to grab onto if you want it.
Edit shapes with unite / intersect / subtract (under Format > Shapes and Lines).  E.g., take a bite out of an object.
Connection lines (under Insert - > lines).  Like magnets in OmniGraffle: the end of the line attaches to another object and moves with it.  But very limited halfhearted implementation: not every object type can be connected to, you can’t designate positions on the object to connect to, nothing else in the interface even tells you whether the line is a connector or not, there’s no way to switch it on an off for a particular object, etc…
Magic Move transitioncan match text boxes with some text changes (inserting words or letters)
Format > Shapes and Lines > Make motion path from shape (haven’t tried this)
Insert comments tagged with your name and optionally attached to certain objects
Fewer floating windows (panel on right instead)
    Negative things worth noting:
The new keynote autosaves, even when this destroys compatibility with older versions of Keynote.  So if you want to try editing an old presentation, and you might want to still use it in the old Keynote, make a copy first.
The new Curve object (click the Shape toolbar button, and it’s in the top right) is very strange and you might want to avoid using it.  It doesn’t seem to be a “first class” object like others.  You cannot add Bezier points, and strangely, you can’t even rotate it!  Instead, add a straight line and then add a Bezier point to it.
Cannot reapply master to selection (can only apply to entire slide)
Bezier nodes have only a point, not the two handles, so they’re less flexible
Old themes can fail to work correctly.  Not only if there are animations in the master, as has been reported elsewhere; one of my themes incorrectly displays paragraphs as bullets, until I manually tell it to reapply the master to the slide.

The viewable area is centered now. So, you can stage objects off-slide to the top or left very easily.
No more fiddling with a button to scale. Now, as with most drawing apps, pinch can zoom in and out quickly
Right-to-left language text (like Arabic and Hebrew) builds actually WORK!
Have an image and want to replace it with an updated version (or one that's customer specific)? You can now replace images in place quickly
    Negative thing worth noting
No longer possible to tweak the file manually to create rounded joins on lines (or rounded butts on dashes for that matter). If you have an old file you manually updated, those still work in the latest version (I've posted a presentation here that uses lines with rounded corners instead of mitered corners to show the difference https://www.icloud.com/iw/#keynote/BAI2xMm7NsSaRKQ1wayBKy6a3BIs7ZO7W1OE/Symbols_ ME_11)

  • Is it possible to get the thumb through feature in keynote (inspector build actions thumb through) to do a loop of photos instead of just going through them once?

Need to know urgently for a seminar as there is discussion and i need continual photos flicking through and want to use Keynote for it as it looks far more professional.
Thanks for your comments and answer!

Hi, i dont know if this is exactly what you want but you can experiment with the different options.
    Inspector
    Build
    Action
    Thumb through
    More Options
Then on the right side, there is the build order. The first build is assigned as Start Build-> On Click
For the second build and on you have to choose: Start Build->Automatically with build 1.
You can choose the delay you want (the interval between each move)
    Hope this helps

  • List of deleted features in Keynote '13

Compiling a master list - please add yours.
Aperture photos no longer appear in Media Library
    Format bar is gone
    Perspective animation is missing
Links to Numbers file no longer work
Presenter Display options are missing : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5470350?tstart=0
Quicktime export no longer skips skipped slides or allows manual advance
Links to other slideshows no longer work

The transitions are still there; they're just not enabled.
Since the removal of the option to restore old transitions in the Keynote menu, they remain inaccessible.
To prove theyr'e still there - select the new Keynote app, right click, then select 'Show package contents'.
Navigate to 'Contents' -> 'Resources'; all the old Transitions are there under 'KNTransition' including my old favourite 'Color Planes' that has now disappeared too.
Someone just need to work out how to reactivate them...
The Presenter Display still works for me if enabled in preferences. The Presenter Preferences have now moved to the Presenter Display (they're the second icon in with the 3 square boxes) - select this icon to show what to show or hide.

  • What Keynote features will not export well to PowerPoint?

I am an expert PC user switching to mac...
We use MS Live Meeting for webinars, and it only accepts (as far as I know) PowerPoint presentations. I would like to produce the presentation in Keynote, and then save as to PowerPoint. However, my experience with Pages importing office 07 has been disappointing to say the least.
So, before I spend a lot of time learning Keynote, I would like to know what features of Keynote WILL NOT export properly to PPT. I don't want to spend a lot of time creating cool effect (magic move?) only to realize it was wasted.
Is there a URL that explains what won't work? Is there a way to gray out features in keynote that will not work in PPT?
    Thanks
    bob

Here are a few issues with exporting:
Generally the transitions will not export well -- any of the effects that are not directly available in PowerPoint will not transfer at all, and even those that are available (such as "dissolve") for the most part look worse in PowerPoint than in Keynote. This includes "content-aware slide transitions" such as Magic Move, Text Effects, and Object Effects transitions.
Smart Builds are not supported at all. Action Builds are not supported at all.
"Normal" Builds In and Out have limited support -- again, any of the animations not directly available in PowerPoint will not transfer.
In terms of graphics, Drop Shadows have limited support -- any shadows will be rendered as a solid colour, without translucency or feathered edges. Text translucency is not supported, although image translucency is. Image Adjustments are respected in export.
(The above is all gleaned from spending 5 minutes playing with Keynote. If you want to determine if some specific effect is available, I'd suggest downloading the trial version and see what happens.)
I have used Keynote quite successfully to create PowerPoint presentations, but for the most part I avoided any animations/transitions, and used it primarily for its templates, graphic abilities, and easier management of slides (e.g., I find it far more straightforward to edit templates in Keynote than in PowerPoint). Also, I always check the finished product very carefully in PowerPoint, as it is not uncommon for text spacing to be somewhat different.

  • Keynote and Microsoft PowerPoint

I recently started using Keynote and I've come to like it a lot. However their are still many things that are different. When writing with Microsoft PowerPoint I usually used the right click synonymous word feature. I have not yet found that feature for Keynote. Does anyone know if it has it?

Thank you Kyn Drake. Hopefully, in the next Keynote they make it more flexible. As is, not having to do the drag and opening dictionary but have it right their were your writing.

  • How do i create organisational chart in keynote?

i can't seem to find a "ready" chart in the chart bar, is there any simple/straightforward way to create an organisational chart in keynote rather than to create in other apps and move it here? thank you

There is not an organisation chart feature in Keynote.
You would add text boxes and shapes connecting them with the line shape.

  • Why won't my .mov or my .mp4 movie play in Keynote 4.0?

Others on the forum seem able to play movies in their keynote projects. I can't.
When the slide I have placed the movie comes up, the movie plays for a second or so and then quits while the next slide comes up. What am I doing wrong? The movie is just over 2 minutes long. Why won't it play?
Any help will be appreciated. I'm new to using Keynote. I've enjoyed making builds with music on mulitiple slides, but dang it, I can't seem to make a simple .mov or a .mp4 movie work. I'm guessing I'm missing something very basic. Please help.

If I am understanding your problem correctly, this is unfortunately a bug (or simply an unsupported feature) in Keynote that has not been corrected since the very beginning. Currently, the only way to have a movie play properly through is to:
    1) make sure the slide containing the movie has no delay in the transition to the next slide, and
    2) you will need to create transparent objects (like a square), each building in a set amount of seconds (60 seconds max allowable per object). For example: For a three minute movie, you will need to create an object, build it in over 60 seconds. Then copy and paste for the second object only this time, set it to start building in AFTER the previous build. Copy and paste again, set to build after the previous build, only this time, you will need to adjust the 60 seconds down to whatever fits. When the last object is done building, the slide will transition regardless of whether or not the movie is done playing.
It is a complete waste of time as trying to determine the duration of the last object to build in is totally trial and error. I am amazed that this simple feature (playing a movie within a slide) is hampered.

  • Exporting Keynote 4.0 to Powerpoint 2007 and 2008

I know that this topic has been discussed previously with respect to Powerpoint 2007 but I'm somewhat frustrated with the export to powerpoint feature in Keynote. Some background:
    1. Using keynote since version 1.0
    2. Never had a significant problems with exporting to Powerpoint 2004 (minor issues aside)
    3. Keynote files exported to .ppt don't open in Powerpoint 2007/2008 (exect very basic files). Exported file can be opened in 2004....
    4. Thought that it was an issue with Powerpoint but after trying various combinations now convinced that it is Keynote.
    Any ideas?

I have the same problem. When I export a Keynote 4.0.1 presentation to Powerpoint, it cannot be played with the new Powerpoint 2008 on that same Mac (Powerpoint crashes), and it cannot be played on a Windows machine with Powerpoint 2007 (puts Powerpoint into a weird state).
I can take that exported Powerpoint to my iMac where I haven't upgraded to Office 2008 and play it on the older Powerpoint 2004. If I bring the exported Powerpoint (from Keynote 4.0.1) into Powerpoint 2004 and then do a SaveAs from Powerpoint 2004, I can play THAT EXPORT with Powerpoint 2008 on my MacBook Pro.
Keynote 4.0.1 needs to be fixed soonest!

  • Five Feature Requests - Do you have more?

Forgive me if this isn't the appropriate place to post feature requests but I couldn't find anywhere else that seemed better.
I love Keynote.... I'm looking forward to the day when I can ditch PP for good. Here are some features that I think would really help Keynote become more powerful.
    1. Export as faithfully as possible to PP. Motion paths, alpha channels, etc. We live in a mixed platform world and I hate seeing my presos butchered on export.
    2. Include a "slide library" like we have in iPhoto and the new iMovie. Opening dozens of presentations to find a particular slide is a pain!
    3. Give us a layer browser (ala PhotoShop) to make arranging object hierarchies easier
    4. Let us apply Quartz image processing to objects/layers ( blur, distort, colorize, etc) and make those effects non-destructive and play in real-time if appropriate (eg, ripples, fading, etc).
    5. Give us some alternative to "SmartArt". Being able to create structured diagrams easily with SmartArt is a HUGE time saver.
    Thanks!
    H

The best way to hide such a discussion such as this is to lead on from another established thread about a related matter. The worse way is to put "feature request" in the title. I listed ten or so features and got the thread pulled in 24hrs.
Against that, I feature requested (*Keynote Menu> Feedback...*) a feature similar to Magic Move (but less ambitious) last year and was pleasantly surprised to see MM in KN'09. Also noted KN'08 had very difficult Build>Move path construction tools that hid control points under other objects and now they stay active. Very subtle but effective improvements there. Not sure if it was listening, synchronicity or randomness but gives hope.
Co-Melbournian, Les Posen presented to the Keynote dev team and his blog has an account of sorts.

  • Export "recorded" Keynote to Quicktime=loss of quality and stuttering..

    Hi folks,
Can anyone give me help? Here is the deal:
    1. I have a nice Keynote with all of my actions and transitions. I want to record it (or whatever) and send it to iMovie where I can manipulate multiple songs (from iTunes) as a soundtrack.
    2. After that, either make a dvd of it, or save it as a quicktime movie to play direct from the mac.
    3. The best quality is desired.
I saw that someone recommended Snapz ProX to record..can that then play nicely with iMovie/soundtrack development?
The "record" feature in Keynote was the only way I could preserve my custom actions and transitions, but the export to Quicktime horribly reduces quality to an unusable level. Drat.
    Thanks!!!!!

On your mac... bring up the keynote and set it to the first slide. Then click file>record. This will begin a play-thru of your keynote. If you have to advance things by click then you will have to trial-and-error on that and see if you like the results. If you have everything automated it will work smoothly. If you have audio make sure you turn your speakers off or way down as it will automatically turn on the mic as it records and it will record you talking and stuff... so shhhhhh!
After it is done, click share>export to itunes. If asked --you want to work with the recorded version you just made--. It should then create a quiktime version of your keynote that is playable on a PC. (that can play QT videos!)
Depending on what you have made there are many ways to do this... If it is a simple slide show you can first try to export as a Power Point which will certainly play on the PC...but is prone to issues depending on your slides.
You can only record your Keynote once at a time... so if you mess up, just click file>clear recording, and do it again.....
Just tinker with it and you will see....

  • Smart build animations in Keynote 6.5

I have Keynote 6.5 and I'm looking for the smart build animations I saw in several Youtube tutorials.  Help!

No such feature in Keynote 6.5, this was an effect available in Keynote 09 for photo images.
Choose from the Builds, Actions and Transitions that are available in the Inspector for image effects.

  • How do I resolve Error -1 in Keynote?

For several months I have been utilizing the Export to QuickTime feature within Keynote (v 5.3) to save presentations along with all audio commentary made. However, in recent weeks this feature no longer works. After processing about 75% of the export the following error message appears: "Your slideshow cannot be exported as a QuickTime movie. There's not enough disk space, or there was a problem with the file. Error -1."
For starters, I have a MBPro 17" with 8 GB of RAM, running the most current OS (10.8.4) and I typically have about 75 GB of free space on my local HD. Therefore, I can't imagine that it is really a "not enough disk space" issue.
Any help in knowing how to resolve this issue so that I can export a very critical presentation would be greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Randy
ps To be on the super-safe side yesterday, I restarted my Mac just prior to the presentation to ensure everything was in pristine condition, and still encountered the message noted above.

I have the same error when exporting a keynote presentation with audio or vidoefiles embedded.
The lock & record workaround did not solve the problem.
So I rejected all the audiofiles, and exported the "mute" presentation.
I imported the m4v into a video edt software and combined it with the audiofiles.
A lousy workaround, but it seems to be the only solution for now.
Hopefully apple will solve this export error
