Preference for diagnosing Performance issues
What do DBA's like using more? StatsPack or ADDM/AWR?
Depends on what you're looking for as well. Tracing may be of more interest than a higher level report such as what awrrpt provides. Do you like using a hammer or a mallet better? Doesn't that depend on what you're hitting? Same idea.

Tool for diagnosing performance issues in oracle database
Is there any tool to diagnose performance issues in queries and stored procedures in oracle similar to sql profiler for sql server
Thanksyou can use oem oracle enterprise manager to diagnose and monitor database .

AIR for iOS performance issue on iPhone4
Hi,
I have a little script that changes the scale of the ball based on sample data I'm getting from the microphone.
It is working perfectly on MacBookPro, but when I compile it into ipa and test on my iPhone4, I'm getting very slow rendering. The ball changes scale slower and doesn't hit every beat as it does when I test in on MacBook. I have tested it on iPad3 as well and it acts the same ;(
The question is - how can I improve performance, or maybe it just can't be done with AIR for iOS?
So my FlashCC setup is 640x960px, 30fps.
On stage I have just an instance of the "ball" - a movie clip with 100x100px vector circle with solid fill.
For bitmap mode I used Cache as bitmap.
//Script:
import flash.media.Microphone; import flash.events.SampleDataEvent;
import flash.utils.ByteArray;
var mic:Microphone = Microphone.getMicrophone();
mic.rate = 8;
mic.gain = 100;
var diff_norm = 0;
mic.addEventListener(SampleDataEvent.SAMPLE_DATA, SampleData);
this.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, loop);
function SampleData(eventObject:SampleDataEvent):void{
var byteData:ByteArray = eventObject.data;
while (byteData.bytesAvailable > 0)
var diff:Number = byteData.readFloat() * 20;
diff_norm = (Math.floor(Math.abs(diff)))
function loop(e:Event):void{
ball.scaleX = ball.scaleY = diff_norm;
Thanks in advance.
RT.Weird, but I just tested with Matrix and ir acts the same or even slower. At least I had a hope for a minute
So I'm still seeking for the answer to this problem. -

How to restart base station from airport utility? I used to be able to do it remotely
I currently use a Mac Pro 10.8.4 and have a time machine for wireless 6.3 (630.34). Sometimes I cannot connect to the internet and use network preferences to diagnose the issue. This results in being told to restart the wireless. The airport utility includes the drop down option of restarting but is not clickable so I can't choose it.
With my prior macbook and same time capsule, etc if i had problems connecting to the internet I would run network diagnostics to help out. This included clicking on the airport utility ---> base station --> restart. This worked most of the time.
Bottom line, is there something I am missing in not being able to restart the wi-fi remotely? ]
Thanks in advanceYou are likely forgetting a step.
Open AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon
Click Edit in the small window that appears
Now click the Base Station menu.....top of the screen....not the Base Station "tab" in the center of the screen
Click Restart -
Hi,
Has anyone had any issues with performance when updating the planning buffer using the Exit FM? What are the things to prepare for about performance issues in production system? Please recommend.
Thanks
RTHi Rob
In the case of performances problems you should check the statistics in BPS_STAT0 for possible long database selection on data
About this topic you can try to implement the SAP note 729362

Performance issue with pl/sql code
Hi Oracle Gurus,
I am in need of your recommendations for a performance issue that I am facing in production envrionment. There is a pl/sql procedure which executes with different elapsed time at different executions. Elapsed Times are 30minutes , 40 minutes, 65 minutes , 3 minutes ,3 seconds.
Expected elapsed time is maximum of 3 minutes. ( But some times it took 3 seconds too...! )
Output on all different executions are same that is deletion and insertion of 12K records into a table.
Here is the auto trace details of two different scenarios.
Slow execution - 33.65 minutes
Stat Name Statement Per Execution % Snap
Elapsed Time (ms) 1,712,343 1,712,342.6 41.4

-------------------------------------------------------------For security reasons, I cannot share the actual code. Its a report generating code that deletes and load the data into table using insert into select statement.
Delete from table ;
cursor X to get the master data ( 98 records )
For each X loop
insert into tableA select * from tables where a= X.a and b= X.b and c=X.c ..... ;
-- 12 K records inserted on average
insert into tableB select * from tables where a= X.a and b= X.b and c=X.c ..... ;
-- 12 K records inserted on average
end loop ;1. The select query is complex with bind variables ( explain plan varies for each values )
2. I have checked the tablespace of the tables involved, it is 82% used. DBA confirmed that it is not the reason.
3. Disk reads are high during long execution.
4. At long running times, I can see a db sequential read wait event on a index object. This index is on the table where data is inserted.
All I need to find is why this code is taking 3 seconds and 60 minutes on the same day and on the consecutive executions ?
Is there any other approach to find the root cause of this behaviour and to fix it ? Kindly adivse.
Thanks in advance your help.
Regards,
Hari

This would improve readability greatly and will help us to help you

select * from dual;{<b></b>code}
Based upon your description I can imagine two things.
a) The execution plan for the select query does change frequently.
A typical reason can be not up to date statistics.
b) Some locking / wait conflict. For example upon a UK index.
Are there any other operations going on while it is slow? If anybody inserts a value, then your session will wait, if the same (PK/UK) value also is to be inserted.
Those wait events can be recognized using standard tools like oracle sql developer or enterprise manager while the query is slow.
Also go through the links that are in the FAQ. They tell you how to get better information for makeing a tuning request.

SQL Performance issue: Using user defined function with group by
Hi Everyone,
im new here and I really could need some help on a weird performance issue. I hope this is the right topic for SQL performance issues.
Well ok, i create a function for converting a date from timezone GMT to a specified timzeone.
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION I3S_REP_1.fnc_user_rep_date_to_local (date_in IN date, tz_name_in IN VARCHAR2) RETURN date
IS
tz_name VARCHAR2(100);
date_out date;
BEGIN
SELECT
to_date(to_char(cast(from_tz(cast( date_in AS TIMESTAMP),'GMT')AT
TIME ZONE (tz_name_in) AS DATE),'dd-mm-yyyy hh24:mi:ss'),'dd-mm-yyyy hh24:mi:ss')
INTO date_out
FROM dual;
RETURN date_out;
END fnc_user_rep_date_to_local;The following statement is just an example, the real statement is much more complex. So I select some date values from a table and aggregate a little.
select
stp_end_stamp,
count(*) noi
from step
where
stp_end_stamp
BETWEEN
to_date('23-05-2009 00:00:00','dd-mm-yyyy hh24:mi:ss')
AND
to_date('23-07-2009 00:00:00','dd-mm-yyyy hh24:mi:ss')
group by
stp_end_stampThis statement selects ~70000 rows and needs ~ 70ms
If i use the function it selects the same number of rows ;-) and takes ~ 4 sec ...
select
fnc_user_rep_date_to_local(stp_end_stamp,'Europe/Berlin'),
count(*) noi
from step
where
stp_end_stamp
BETWEEN
to_date('23-05-2009 00:00:00','dd-mm-yyyy hh24:mi:ss')
AND
to_date('23-07-2009 00:00:00','dd-mm-yyyy hh24:mi:ss')
group by
fnc_user_rep_date_to_local(stp_end_stamp,'Europe/Berlin')I understand that the DB has to execute the function for each row.
But if I execute the following statement, it takes only ~90ms ...
select
fnc_user_rep_date_to_gmt(stp_end_stamp,'Europe/Berlin','ny21654'),
noi
from
select
stp_end_stamp,
count(*) noi
from step
where
stp_end_stamp
BETWEEN
to_date('23-05-2009 00:00:00','dd-mm-yyyy hh24:mi:ss')
AND
to_date('23-07-2009 00:00:00','dd-mm-yyyy hh24:mi:ss')
group by
stp_end_stamp
)The execution plan for all three statements is EXACTLY the same!!!
Usually i would say, that I use the third statement and the world is in order. BUT I'm working on a BI project with a tool called Business Objects and it generates SQL, so my hands are bound and I can't make this tool to generate the SQL as a subselect.
My questions are:
Why is the second statement sooo much slower than the third?
and
Howcan I force the optimizer to do whatever he is doing to make the third statement so fast?
I would really appreciate some help on this really weird issue.
Thanks in advance,
AndiHi,
The execution plan for all three statements is EXACTLY the same!!!Not exactly. Plans are the same - true. They uses slightly different approach to call function. See:
drop table t cascade constraints purge;
create table t as select mod(rownum,10) id, cast('x' as char(500)) pad from dual connect by level <= 10000;
exec dbms_stats.gather_table_stats(user, 't');
create or replace function test_fnc(p_int number) return number is
begin
return trunc(p_int);
end;
explain plan for select id from t group by id;
select * from table(dbms_xplan.display(null,null,'advanced'));
explain plan for select test_fnc(id) from t group by test_fnc(id);
select * from table(dbms_xplan.display(null,null,'advanced'));
explain plan for select test_fnc(id) from (select id from t group by id);

Performance Issue - Index is not used when a zero padded string is queried
Hi All,
I have a table T1 which has many columns. One such column say C1 is a varchar2(20). T1 has 10 million rows and there is an index called I1 on C1. Stats are current for both tables and indexes. These are the scenarios:
Scenario 1
select * from T1 where C1 = '0013206263' --Uses index I1
187 ms
Scenario 2
select * from T1 where C1 = '8177341863' --Uses index I1
203 ms
*Scenario 3*
*select * from T1 where C1 = '0000000945' --Uses Fulll Table Scan --Very Slow*
*45 seconds*
When I force the sql to use the index through a hint, it is working fine:
Scenario 4
select /*+ INDEX (t1 i1) */ * from T1 where C1 = '0013206263' --Uses index I1
123 ms
Scenario 5
select /*+ INDEX (t1 i1) */ * from T1 where C1 = '8177341863' --Uses index I1
201 ms
*Scenario 6*
*select /*+ INDEX (t1 i1) */ * from T1 where C1 = '0000000945' --Uses index I1*
*172ms*Is there any reason for this performance issue? Why does the optimizer goes for FTS in Scenario 3?

It's possible you do have a histogram, even though you didn't plan on creating it, if you're running 10g.
In the absence of a histogram and with 7M distinct keys in 10M rows, Oracle should have predicted 2 rows for both queries, not 244,000 and 532.
If you do have a histogram, you probably need to get rid of it.

Hi Gurus,
I m woking on performance tuning at the moment and wants some tips
regarding the Query performance tuning,if anyone can helpme in that

the thing is that i have got an idea about the system and now the
issues r with DB space, Abap Dumps, problem in free space in table
space, no number range buffering,cubes r using too many aggrigates,
large IC,Large ODS, and many others.
So my questionis that is anyone can tell me that how to resolve the
issues with the Large master data tables,and large ODS,and one more
importnat issue is KPI´s exceding there refrence valuses so any idea
how to deal with them.

AmitHi Amit
For Query performance issue u can go for :-
Aggregates : They will help u a lot to make ur query faster becuase query doesnt hits ur cube it hits the aggregates which has very less number of records in comp to ur cube
secondly i wud suggest u is use CKF in place of formulaes if any in the query
other thing is avoid upto the extent possible the use fo nav attr . if u want to use them use it upto the minimal level reason i am saying so is during the query exec whn ever there is nav attr it provides unncessary join to ur MD and thus dec query perfo
be specifc to rows and columns if u r not sure of a kf or a char then better put it in a free char.
use filters if possible
if u follow these m sure ur query perfo will inc

Oracle Advance Compression Deletion Performance issue in 11g R1
Hi,
We have implemented OAC in our datawarehouse environment to enable table and index compression. We tested in our Test machine and we gained almost 600GB due to advance compression without any issues and all the informatica loads are running fine. And hence we implemented the same in our production but unfortunately two sessions which are involving deletion of data are taking more time (3 times of actual timing) for completion which affects our production environment.
The tables creating issue are all non partitioned tables.
I need to know whether Oracle Advance Compression will decrease delete performance? and is there any way to disable advance compression on those particular tables?
Our environment details:
DB earlier version: 11.1.0.6
DB current version : Oracle 11.1.0.7
Applied PSU: 11.1.0.7.6
Operating system: Solaris 5.9
Syntax used for compression:
ALTER TABLE TABLE_NAME MOVE COMPRESS FOR ALL OPERATIONS;
Thanks in Advance.Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
The note is for update performance issue and also I have applied necessary patches for improving update performance.
The update sessions are all working fine. only the deletion sessions are creating problem.
Could someone help me out to clear this problem.
Thanks,

Performance issue session or bean?
hi,
i have a doubt regarding performance issue.
actually in my application, five jsp' s need to communicate each other. They share around 15 String Objects.
1. So right now i am using Session object to store
these 15 String objects.
2. Also my application can declare a class to
store all these 15 String objects as attributes and
then use <jsp:usebean> tag for communication
with session scope.
So now we have two methods for sharing information
in jsp application as stated above.
Can anyone help me which is the best method to follow as given above and why. Which does increase or decrease the web server load.
Thanks in advance.
Have a nice day.
Bye
SureshI'd go for wrapping up the data in a single object...not for any performance issues, just because it's far tidier.
As for performance, I doubt there is much difference although by wrapping up the data in one object you only have to call the session object once to get a handle on all 15 strings. -
RCA for Oracle RAC Performance Issue
Hi DBAs,
I have setup a 2 node Oracle RAC 10.2.0.3 on Linux 4.5 (64 bit) with 16 GB memory and 4 dual core CPUs each. The database is serving a web application but unfortunately the system is at its knees. The performance is terrible. The storage is a EMC SAN but ASM is not implemented with a fear to further degrade the performance or not to complicate the system further.
I am seeking the expert advises from some GURUs from this forums to formulate the action plan to do the root cause analysis to the system and database. Please advise me what tools I can use to gather the information about the Root Cause. AWR Report is not very helpful. The system stats with top, vmstat, iostat only show the high resource usage but difficult to find the reason. OEM has configured and very frequently report all kind of high wait events.
How I can use effectively find Network bottle necks (netstat command which need to be really helpful to understand).
How I can see the system I/O (iostats) which can provide me some useful information. I don't understand what sould be the baseline or optimal values to compare the I/O activities.
I am seeking help and advised to diagnose the issue. I also want to represent this issue as a case study.
Thanks
-Samar-First of all, RAC is mainly suited for OLTP applications.
Secondly, if your application is unscalable (it doesn't use bind variables and no SQL statements have been tuned and/or it has been ported from Sukkelserver 200<whatever>) running it against RAC will make things worse.
Thirdly: RAC uses a chatty Interconnect. If you didn't configure the Interconnect properly,and/or are using slow Network cards (1 Gb is mandatory), and/or you are not using a 9k MTU on your 1 Gb NIC, this again will make things worse.
You can't install RAC 'out of the box'. It won't perform! PERIOD.
Fourthly: you might suffer from your 'application' connecting and disconnecting for every individual SQL statement and/or commit every individual INSERT or UPDATE.
You need to address this.
Using ADDM and/or AWR is compulsory for analysing the problem, and/or having read Cary Millsaps book on Optimizing Oracle performance is compulsory.
You won't come anywhere without AWR and OS statistics will not provide any clue.
Because, paraphrasing William Jefferson Clinton, former president of the US of A:
It's the application, stupid.
99 out of 100 cases. Trust me. All developers I know currently are 100 percent clueless.
That said, if you can't be bothered to post the top 5 AWR events, and you aren't up to using AWR reports, maybe you should hire a consultant who can.

Performance Issue for BI system
Hello,
We are facing performance issues for BI System. Its a preproductive system and its performance is degrading badly everyday. I was checking system came to know program buffer hit ratio is increaasing everyday due to high Swaps. So asked to change the parameter abap/buffersize which was 300Mb to 500Mb. But still no major improvement is found in the system.
There is 16GB Ram available and Server is HP-UX and with Netweaver2004s with Oracle 10.2.0.4.0 installed in it.
The Main problem is while running a report or creating a query is taking way too long time.
Kindly help me.Hello SIva,
Thanks for your reply but i have checked ST02 and ST03 and also SM50 and its normal
we are having 9 dialog processes, 3 Background , 2 Update and 1 spool.
No one is using the system currently but in ST02 i can see the swaps are in red.
