Preloader to estimate time for a function to finish?

Hello. I'm building an AIR project that uses images stored locally to perform some calculations using their bitmapData. In this app I browse my hard drive via an application menu command I created, select an image (using FileReference) and it loads. When it finishes loading, the calculations take place and the image is added to the stage. The larger the image, the longer this takes.
So far, so good.
I added a preloader to check the FileReference loading time and another for the loadBytes method I use later to be able to use the bitmapData. What surprised me was that both theses processes were very fast, but with larger images they were taking a long time to be added to the stage. Some tracing and commenting later, I discovered the culprit was one of the calculations I was doing, involving pixel counts. So my question is, is there any way to create a preloader for this function?
Thank you.

there is but it's not as easy as normal preloading.
you can break your code into smaller chunks, each of which completes and allows a stage update.  here's a sample from a book being published later this year:
Loop types that execute from start to end before anything updates on stage include do-loops, for-loops and while loops. They cannot be used to animate objects because no matter what code you use to execute the loop and no matter what you do to (try and) slow it down, it will still execute from start to finish before anything changes on stage. They are appropriately used for rapid execution of code.
There is never a situation when you should intentionally slow these loops. However, there are situations when you might want to break these loops into more than one chunk so the stage can update between each chunk.
Chunks
For example, if you have a for-loop that takes 10 seconds to execute, your game will appear to freeze for 10 seconds after this loop starts. Nothing will update on stage and nothing will respond to user input. Either you should warn your user before starting that loop or you should break that loop into several smaller chunks that allow visual updates to the user so they do not think your game is broken.
For example, this for-loop that adds odd numbers (and shows the first m odd numbers sum to m*m) freezes my Flash Player for about 9 seconds.
var i:Number;
var n:Number=3000000000;
var s:Number=0;
var startI:Number=1;
var endI:Number=n
var startTime:int=getTimer();
for (i=startI; i<endI; i+=2) {
       s+=i;
// 9 seconds
trace((getTimer()-startTime)/1000,s,n*n/4,s-n*n/4);
The following technique shows how to break this (and any other for-loop) into chunks that allow the Flash Player to update every second.
var i:Number;
var n:Number=3000000000;
var s:Number=0;
var startTime:int=getTimer();
// This is the number chunks into which the previous for-loop will broken. If the // previous for-loop took about 9 seconds, using 10 chunks means there will be updates // about every 0.9 seconds.
var chunks:int=10;
var startI:Number=1;
var endI:Number=n/chunks;
var t:Timer=new Timer(100,1);
t.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER,f);
f();
function f(e:Event=null):void {
       for (i=startI; i<endI; i+=2) {
              s+=i;
       trace("stage update",startI,endI,s);
       if (endI<n) {
              t.reset();
              t.start();
       } else {
              trace((getTimer()-startTime)/1000,s,n*n/4,s-n*n/4);
       startI+=n/chunks;
       endI+=n/chunks;

  • SAP tool to estimate time for web dynpro development project

    Hi,
    Is there any standard SAP tool available to estimate time for web Dynpro development project?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Deepti

    Hi Deepti
    An implementation of Webdynpro based UI could be estimated by a 'standard' technique like any other U:
    1. Try to count the number of views/screens/popups in your application. The estimation time will be proportional to the quantity.
    2. Try to count the number of external interfaces would be used in the application. For example, quantity of necessary BAPI invocations (RFC), quantity of Web-service invocations or EJB calls. Also quantity of native JDBC queries if any.
    Test = Nviews x Hview + Nint x Hint, where Hview & Hint time in hours for average implementing of one UI view and time for adding of average service invocation.

  • Need to know how to find the last execution time for a function module

    HI all
    I need to know
    1) How to find out the last execution time of the function module ?
      say for eg. I have executed a func. module at 1:39pm. How to retrieve this time  (1:39pm)
    2) I have created 3 billing document in tcode VF01 i.e 3 billing doucment no. would be created in SAP TABLE "VBRP" b/w 12am to 12:30 am.
    How to capture the latest SAP database update b/w time intervals?
    3) Suppose I am downloading TXT file using "GUI_DOWNLOAD" and say in 20th record some error has happened. I can capture the error using the exception.
    Is it possible to run the program once again from 21st records ? All this will be running in background...
    Kindly clarify....
    Points will be rewarded
    Thanks in advance

    1.Use tcode STAT input as Tcode of Fm and execute .
    2. See the billing documents are created in table VBRk header and there will always be Creation date and time.
    VBRk-Erdat "date ., u can check the time field also
    So now if u talk the date and time we can filter then display the records in intervals.
    3. with an error exeption how is my txt download finished .
    once exception is raised there will not be a download .

  • Macbook very slow when estimate time for indexing

    Hello,
    Spotlight is often trying to index my macbook. I always see the message "estimate indexing time".
    I never see Spotlight actual indexing.
    When Spotlight is doing this, my macbook runs extremely slow.
    Spotlight is doing this once a day for at least a half hour.
    It's very annoying.
    Can somebody help me? I can't imagine this is normal.
    Roy

    Bob -
    Was wondering if you can elaborate on your response and perhaps help me? I apologize if I have missed this topic covered elsewhere.
    I am using a N-capable Time Capsule and an older model G-speed airport express. My biggest issue is that my wireless speeds are 1.5 download and 1.9 upload when in fact my cable modem pumps out 15! In reading your posts I see that my network is likely dropped down to G due to my old express, and in fact my computer may be running of a spliced version of that if using WDS settings?
    I think i'll end up calling apple support at some point but was curious if you can go over the facts of using N and G together, and if i can have my macbook pro speak to my N network only and my iphone 3G speak to G airport express only?
    Last piece of info is I use the airport express for my music.... not sure if this means they must be WDS or not? I'm just looking to get my N devices as fast as possible while continuing to use my G express. If you tell me i need to upgrade to a N express I can live with it.... but if i can avoid the $100 and work with what i have...all the better!
    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

  • Quick time for windows didn't finish with download

    I had itunes in my computer but, by error I remove Quick Time from computer in consecuense I remove itunes too, I tried to download itunes 7, but it is downloading in status: "Initializing quick time types" it is stock in this part, never finish the downloading. What do I have to do?

    Get the QuickTime standalone installation. See if you can get that to install properly.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
    Click the button for the one that doesn't have itunes in it.
    If you get QT to install OK, then your iTunes install should go OK, also. iTunes uses the QT codecs to play music & video.

  • Every new function causes (not responding), takes a long long time for each operation, everything else on new I7 laptop is fast.

    I installed firefox 4 and it starts slow but every function I try causes the term (not responding) on top and it can take several minutes for the function to finish executing. My PC is only 6 mos old with I7 processors, run Panda security software, I did all that your Troubleshooting instruction said to try but still not working correctly.

    hello,

    How deep is a hole?
    How long does it take to read an unknown number of blocks containing an unknown number of rows from an unknown disk system with an unknown contention load, pulling it across an network of unknown bandwidth and unknown load ....
    And I'm not saying that if you somehow provide all this that the answer can be known. I'm saying the too much of the information tht would be needed to make such an estimate is unknowable. Much of it will be widely variable from one execution of the query to the next execution of the exact same query. Which leaves you with exactly what to base your estimate on?
    Without even seeing your query, I can tell you with absolute certainty that it will take between 1 nano-second and 100 years to execute.

    I think I saw this question in stack overflow. And I answered it :-)
    I believe that it is because you can only one item in the list and once the item is selected, re-selecting it will not fire the event.
    Try adding more items to the list and select different items.

  • Execution time for Call Library Function Node

    I am experimenting with the Call Library Function Node block in LabVIEW and am curious if it should be running faster than what I'm seeing.  For testing purposes, I have compiled and transfered to my RT target the .out file from the KB article http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/81D1172E3C28A5E4862575CC0076A230 (I'm using the vxworks 6.1 version).  The function in the .out file just multiplies two inputs together, adds a constant, and returns the result.  I have put this inside a 1 kHz timed loop with a commanded period of 1 ms and via the Ticks(ms) block and shift registers I calculate the amount of time per loop execution.  This process is apparently taking 5 ms per cycle and to me that seems slow.  Is that roughly the correct execution time for this kind of setup?  I will attach my test .vi file.
    What I'm using:
    Windows 7
    LabVIEW 2009 SP1
    NI-cRIO 9024 with NI-RIO 3.4.0

    First off, the way you are doing timing isn't necessarily accurate because you don't know when the tick count VI is being called. For example, if it gets called on one iteration after your call library node executes, and the next iteration it gets called before the CLFN it executes, the subtraction doesn't include the call of the CLFN so you aren't seeing the true time it is taking for the dll to be called.
    Where it says "error" on the top left hand corner of your loop. left click and choose previous iteration timing. Also, do you have the ability to choose a 1 Mhz clock? Are you sure it's actually being run on the RT and not on your PC? Running it on the PC would definitely make it difficult to execute at a 1 kHz rate.

  • Estimate execution time for CTAS

    Hi,
    I am searching for long to find a way to estimate the execution time for CTAS commands. I am a DBA. Our users run CTAS commands to load millions of rows. The commands fetch data from 4-5 very big tables each with millions of records and process them using where clause and group by clause and finally create the table. All these things are coded in the CTAS command. These CTAS sometime takes long time like 5 , 8 Hrs. Users frequently ask me to find how long it's going to take. I use both OEM and TOAD. But I couldn't find the time estimated from these tools. I feel that there must be some way, but I don't know the method.
    Can any body please help me in this regard?
    Thanks & Regards
    Ananda Basak

    It depends on a number of factors chief among them how accurate your estimate needs to be but also including things like what version of Oracle you're using, how accurate your database statistics are, etc.
    One option is to look at the TIME column in the plan. For example, if I wanted to do a CTAS to create a copy of the EMP table, the optimizer expects that to take on the order of a second. Of course, the optimizer's estimates are only estimates and are only as accurate as the database statistics that are in place. If the optimizer generates a bad plan, it's likely because the optimizer expects some operation to take much more or much less time than it does in reality in which case the optimizer's runtime estimate is likely to be way off.
    SQL> explain plan for create table emp_copy as select * from emp;
    Explained.
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
      1  select *
      2*   from table( dbms_xplan.display() )

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Depending on the query plan, you may be able to query the GV$SESSION_LONGOPS table to track the progress of any long-running operations in your session. If your query plan involves a lot of full table scans, sorts that take more than a few seconds, hash joins, etc. then it is likely that you'll be able to chart the progress of a query over time by watching GV$SESSION_LONGOPS change. Of course, if your query is going to need to do many long-running operations, you'll need to a human to interpret the data a bit in order to figure out where in the plan Oracle currently is and how far along that means the entire query is.
    SELECT *
      FROM gv$session_longops
    WHERE time_remaining > 0If you're using 11g and you have the performance and tuning pack licensed, you could also potentially use the V$SQL_PLAN_MONITOR view.

  • Slideshow issues with variable time for each picture

    Hi all,
    I've migrated from AS1 to AS3, and boy, a lot has changed...
    Anyhow, to learn and understand AS3, I'm modifying a slideshow I found through thetechlabs. I want it to play SWF as well as JPG. These files are passed through an XML file. I added an element called <delaytime> to the XML file that replaces the standard time a photo is shown in the slideshow.
    I modified the onSlideFadeIn() function as follows:
    function onSlideFadeIn():void {
         slideTimer.removeEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, nextSlide);
         slideTimer = new Timer(xmlSlideshow..file[intCurrentSlide].@time);
         slideTimer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, nextSlide);
         if(bolPlaying && !slideTimer.running)
         slideTimer.start();
    However, when I run it, I get this error message:
    ## [Tweener] Error: [object Sprite] raised an error while executing the 'onComplete'handler.
    TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.
    at slideshow_fla::MainTimeline/onSlideFadeIn()
    at Function/http://adobe.com/AS3/2006/builtin::apply()
    at caurina.transitions::Tweener$/::updateTweenByIndex()
    at caurina.transitions::Tweener$/::updateTweens()
    at caurina.transitions::Tweener$/onEnterFrame()
    It stops at the first picture of my slideshow. When I push the 'next' button it displays the next pic, but I get the same error message again.
    When I comment out this line:
    slideTimer = new Timer(xmlSlideshow..file[intCurrentSlide].@time);
    the slideshow runs OK, but without the delaytime specified in the XML file.
    I'm lost here, what am I missing?
    Any help to get me back on track is highly appreciated!
    Thanks a bunch in advance,
    Dirk

    Thanks, but no luck so far...
    With the debugging publish setting on, I get the following error message:
    TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property  or method of a null object reference.
    at  slideshow_fla::MainTimeline/slideshow_fla::frame1()[slideshow_fla.MainTimeline::frame1:12 3]
    Line 123 says:
    trace(xmlSlideshow..file[intCurrentSlide].@time);
    However, when I comment out the trace() line it gives another error  message:
    ## [Tweener] Error: [object Sprite] raised an  error while executing the 'onComplete'handler.
    TypeError: Error #1010: A  term is undefined and has no properties.
    at  slideshow_fla::MainTimeline/onSlideFadeIn()[slideshow_fla.MainTimeline::frame1:118]
    Where line 118 is:
    slideTimer = new  Timer(Number(xmlSlideshow..file[intCurrentSlide].@time));
    Now, according to my Flash manual I bought, I need to 'instanciate' things.  Did I forget this?
    Just can't get my head around this OOP stuff...
    Thanks a bunch for helping me!

  • What could be the Approximate time for HRMS Implementation?

    Dear Friends,
    Any clue on What could be the Approximate time for HRMS Implementation?
    Modules:  Core HR, Payroll, SSHR & OLM
    Bahrain Legislation
    2 Functional
    1 Technical Resource
    Integration with Third Party system for Financials..
    Anyy approximate time pls..
    Guru

    Hi Guru,
    Difficult to estimate these as each legislation is different.
    I also presume, Bahrain is not a seeded legislation.
    So you will have to write all the tax rules and reports.
    But, as the Tax/NI rules for GCC are fairly simple, should not be difficult.
    Best way to go about it, is to do it in phases.
    Core HR - BG configuration, Person migration, Absences etc.. and finally any reports for HR
    Payroll - elements, balances, formulas and all the logic.. and then all the reports.
    Once HR and payroll are done.. SSHR and OLM should take 1/3(or 1/2) of the time you spent on the HR/Payroll.
    Cheers,
    Vignesh

  • How to get the time for executing an SQL statement?

    hi all...
    How can I get the total execution time for a given SQL statement to a ViewObject which is created dynamically for this SQL so that the end user knows it before hand and try to stop it or go further..?
    Please post any ideas if you have got..!!!
    thanx in advance..
    grüss

    This is not really a question for the JDeveloper forum, but rather for the DB forum.
    Since Oracle9i there is a way to estimate how long a query will take, before executing it.
    Check it out in the Oracle DB documentation or ask on the DB forum.
    There is no built-in functionality for this in JDeveloper, but you should be able to call out to the DB from your Java code to get the estimate.

  • Preloader ran by timer not loadProgress. ?

    I would like to create a preloader type effect for when my Image gallery changes images.  I have a timer that runs my function "changeFrames" that just MovieClip(root).nextFrame(); . Could someone help me out or point me to a good source for creating this preloader type effect based on a timer.  I would like to show a progress bar that when it reaches the top will be when my timer is up and the changeFrame function starts.  I could make a movie clip of a load bar that lasts the same amount of time as my timer but I would have to create many different load bars this way because some of my frames pause longer than others.
    thanks for the help

    just create and display a preloader that uses time instead of bytesLoaded.

  • Using asynchronous timer for data flow control

    Hi all,
      I am using system sleep to control the data flow (some digital lines and analog output). The pseudo code is something like this
    Sleep(150);
    // the following sections are exectuted in parallel
      #pragma omp parallel sections
        #pragma omp section
          DAQmxWriteDigitalLines(...); // output TTL to one digitla line
        #pragma omp section
          DAQmxWriteDigitalLines(...); // output TTL to another digitla line
        #pragma omp section
          Sleep(2); // sleep 2ms
    // the following sections are exectuted in parallel
      #pragma omp parallel sections
        #pragma omp section
          DAQmxWriteDigitalLines(...); // output TTL to one digitla line
        #pragma omp section
          DAQmxWriteAnalogScalarF64(...); // analog output to one channel
        #pragma omp section
          Sleep(1); // delay 1ms
    // the following sections are exectuted in parallel
      #pragma omp parallel sections
        #pragma omp section
          DAQmxWriteDigitalLines(...); // output TTL to one digitla line
        #pragma omp section
          DAQmxWriteAnalogScalarF64(...); // analog output to one channel
    #pragma omp section
          DAQmxWriteAnalogScalarF64(...); // analog output to another channel
        #pragma omp section
          Sleep(11); // delay 11ms
    // ... other stuffs
    I am running windows XP and I know it is not possible to get realtime control but  I want a as precise timing as possible. Above code is not perfect but it works 95% of times. I just read an article about using the asynchronous timer to control the time delay. I try that idea with the following code frame
    int CVICALLBACK ATCallback(int reserved, int timerId, int event, void *callbackData, int eventData1, int eventData2)
    if (event==EVENT_TIMER_TICK)
    int *nextdelay = (int *)callbackData;
    SuspendAsyncTimerCallbacks();
    if (timerId>=0)
    double time;
    if (*nextdelay==0) time=2.0;
    else if (*nextdelay==1) time=1.0;
    else time=12.0;
    SetAsyncTimerAttribute(timerId, ASYNC_ATTR_INTERVAL, time);
    if (*nextdelay==0)
    #pragma omp parallel sections
    #pragma omp section
    DAQmxWriteDigitalLines(...); // output TTL to one digitla line
    #pragma omp section
    DAQmxWriteDigitalLines(...); // output TTL to another digitla line
    *nextdelay++;
    else if (*nextdelay==2)
    #pragma omp parallel sections
    #pragma omp section
    DAQmxWriteDigitalLines(...); // output TTL to one digitla line
    #pragma omp section
    DAQmxWriteAnalogScalarF64(...); // analog output to one channel
    *nextdelay++;
    else if (*nextdelay==3)
    #pragma omp parallel sections
    #pragma omp section
    DAQmxWriteDigitalLines(...); // output TTL to one digitla line
    #pragma omp section
    DAQmxWriteAnalogScalarF64(...); // analog output to one channel
    #pragma omp section
    DAQmxWriteAnalogScalarF64(...); // analog output to another channel
    *nextdelay++;
    ResumeAsyncTimerCallbacks();
    return 0;
    void main(void)
    int n = 0;
    int timeid;
    timeid = NewAsyncTimer(120.0/1000.0, 3, 1, ATCallback, &n);
    But it doesn't work. There is no compilation and runtime error but the timing just not right. I wonder do I have to suspend the timer in the callback function when I reset the delay for next call? If I do so, I am worry if it will apply too much delay (since I suspend and resume the timer in the delay) so it will cause even worse timing. But if I don't suspend the timer before I reset the time, what happen if the code running in the callback function not finished before the next callback arrive. It is quite confusing how to use asynchronous timer in this case. Thanks.

    Yeah, unfortunately the 6711 doesn't have clocked digital I/O.  There are only two counters anyway so even if you could use them to generate your signals you wouldn't have enough (*maybe* something with the 4 AO channels and a counter depending on what your output signals need to look like?  The AO channels can output "digital" as well if you write 0V or 5V only).
    A PCI DAQ card which does support clocked digital I/O and has 2 analog outputs is the 6221 (or if you could use PCIe the 6321 is a more updated version with two extra counters and some additional functionality).
    If there isn't a way to implement clocked outputs afterall, one thing you could do to make your code a little more efficient is to consolidate the writes.  You can put your digital lines into a single task and write them at ocne, and you can put your analog channels into a single task and write them at once as well.
    I'm not sure about the callback issue, you might find some more help in the CVI forum.  I don't think it's going to solve your underlying problem though as ultimately the execution timing of your software calls is at the mercy of your OS.
    Best Regards,
    John Passiak
