Premiere - Interpret Premult Alpha

Hi there quick question. I noticed that Premiere interprets Straight alpha channels properly, but Premults have the dreaded halo around it. When I right click the master file and click 'interpret footage' I don't have the option (like in AE) to interpret it as Straight or Premult. It seems like I can only disable or invert it. Is there a way to properly interpret Premult alphas in Premiere? The only fix I have found is doing a 'send to AE' in the sequence and then interpreting in there, once it links back it's totally fine, but this is probably not the best answer.
I am running CC 2014, and just to clarify Premiere reads transparency for both, it's only a matter of interpreting them correctly
Any help appreciated thanks!

Hi,
Thanks for responding and getting back to me guys
@ Fuzzy...Trust me... I didn't think it would work...it didn't make sense to me either but I misunderstood Gerry...he doesn't know that I am operating exclusively on a PC using only PC based software...I don't have a MAC.
@ Kevin...as you have garnered by now I can't use APPLE MOTION because I am on a PC.  I used Sorenson Squeeze to convert the file to an Animation File.   For hours I tried importing and manipulating it in Premiere AND in After Effects with No luck whatsoever.  I tried everything I could think of.
It is a virtual set and I was given 2 files:
Per instructions from a video tutorial on YouTube titled:  "Adobe Premiere Tutorial Set  Alpha Matte" I successfully excuted the instructions but the ALPHA STILL DIDN'T WORK:
File #1)  The alpha.mov file is on VIDEO LAYER 3: > I placed a Channel> Set Matte> set to "Use For Matte" > Luminance on the VIDEO LAYER 3 alpha.mov file > Take Matte From Layer> VIDEO LAYER 2
File #2)  The fullHD.mov file is on VIDEO LAYER 2
Should I send you the file to take look at Kevin?
Thanks again

  • Premiere Interpreting Same Filetype Differently

    I'm working on a MACPRO 2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon with 16GB of RAM. I am working over a network via 10Gbe fiber connected to a main Storage Array and am working on CS6. I am creating cutdowns of weekly hourlong podcasts and then exporting them for the web. A description of my current workflow (simplified for purposes of troubleshooting)is:
    1. Ingest MP4 footage
    2. Create a sequence which requires nesting mulitple hour long clips
    3. Export that edited sequence as an mp4 compressed further for youtube.
    Prior to today the final encode has been taking 1.5hours. Today the encode is taking 5 hours. I have been checking to see what's different and the only thing that I have come up with is that one of the files of today's footage is getting imported as a quicktime movie while the last time around the footage was getting imported as an mpeg movie. When you select the properties of last week's and this week's file in premiere, this is in fact the case. Plus, the quicktime one is actually a "quicktime reference." There seems to be no way to get Premiere to import it a different way. What I don't understand is that both files are approximately the same size (give or take a few minutes) and when you pull up the info on the files in VLC or Quicktime both formats and settings are IDENTICAL. So the two questions I have are:
    1. Could the fact that premiere thinks one file is a quicktime be the reason why today's encode was 5 times longer?
    2. What could possibly be different about these two files that appear identical in format and wrapper?
    Thanks in advance for any insight.
    -Josh

    Josh,
    Welcome to the forum.
    This is but a wild guess on my part, but unless I mixed things up, it's the QT Reference, that is taking the longer to process. That guess is that PrPro is needing to "fill in the blanks," on the Reference File. Why one, nearly identical file would show MPEG, and the other QT Reference, is a mystery to me.
    Also, I'm a PC-guy, but do work with a lot of MOV files from outside contractors (mainly 3D animators), but I specify MOV Animation, and those work just fine.
    I hope that others will have something useful for you, beyond my guesses.
    Good luck,

  • Premiere Not Interpreting Alpha Transparency ProRes 4444

    Hello,
    I've imported a graphic, ProRes 4444 with an alpha channel but Premiere 6.0.2 is not reading the transparency.  When I lay it on top of another clip the transparent part shows as black rather than being transparent and showing the layer underneath.  It seems like the same error is happening in After Effects.
    Final Cut 7 reads the transparency fine.  I read that the same problem was happening on earlier versions of Premiere and After Effects.
    I'm working with a Mac Pro, NVIDIA Quadro 4000, Lion.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

  • Premiere Pro CS6 won't recognize alpha channel in .tiff file from photoshop

    Hey Everyone,
        I'm new to Premiere Pro, but I have used Final Cut Pro 6-7. Anyway, I created a 3D text design in Photoshop to use on top of another photo in a video in Premiere. In Photoshop, the alpha channel appears fine. In Premiere Pro it is not recognized. Instead, a white background appears where the alpha channel should be. When I layered the 3D text on top of a photo (in Premiere Pro), the white still appears around the 3D text design. After I imported the file, I did click on the .tiff file and clicked on modify---->interpret footage----->alpha channel (where I deselected ignore alpha channel). Premiere Pro still does not recognize the alpha channel. Should I convert the Photoshop file to another format or is there something I'm not doing? I'm spending more time trying to figure this out than I am on putting this short video/photo slide show together. I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer.

    Thanks Ann!!! Seriously, you just saved me hours of aggravation. I didn't know I had to select that in Photoshop. I was under the impression that Adobe product files were seamless.

  • Alpha channel not be interpreted in FCP 7

    Dropping in a .motn file into FCP 7's timeline - the alpha channel is not being recognized. If you render out a file and bring into FCP 7, then the alpha is recognized. Anyone else experience this?

    You may need to right/ctrl-click on the .motn file in FCP and tell it to interpret the Alpha channel... (or it might be clicking on it and going under the Clip menu and setting the alpha channel)...

  • Premiere CS4 Does Not Correctly Export Quicktime

    Hello,
    When CS4 initially came out, all of the Quicktime exports were messed up. Now after several patches it still seems that it is not completely correct. I have rendered out of a 3d app sequential images with a white background and an alpha channel. When I import these into Premiere, when the alpha channel is disabled for the clip, it correctly shows a white background in the monitor. But when I export this clip to Quicktime Animation and turn on 32 bit depth, it creates the clip with an alpha channel, but when the alpha channel is disabled on the clip, it renders the background still as black, but with no alpha. It should render it as white. Quicktime Animation clips created this way with other Quicktime exporting software does not do this, and so I believe this is a bug. Where can this be logged?
    thx

    It's not a problem with Quicktime, but rather Premiere CS4 because other apps can create the same thing correctly, using the Quicktime Animation codec.
    thx

  • Help with N8 and Adobe Premiere?

    Hi, I am using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 v4.1.0.
    I recently got a Nokia N8 and am now trying to edit the video recordings, but am having some problems.
    The phone records at 25fps 1280x720 using H.264 MPEG-4 codec, with sound in Stereo 130kbps 48 kHz.
    When I create a project and load the .mp4 file into it, the first problem I see is that it reads it as 500fps and the video is only a second or 2 long.
    I  then interpret the footage to the correct 25fps, and the video then works fine. However,  the sound seems to not be there.
    I've noticed that due to Premiere interpreting it as 500fps, it thus only plays the first second or two of the sound when left as 500fps and plays all the video in that second or two, and thus when changing to the correct 25fps, it is therefore only the two seconds playing over the entire minute of video.
    I also  tried changing the file into other formats. The only other one that  kind of worked was .mov. It allowed the sound to work perfectly, the  video loaded at correct frames, however, when playing the video on  premiere, it then showed black screen for most of the clip.
    Have  tried to find out about this online and installed a couple different  codec packs and media players, but nothing helped with this problem in  Adobe Premiere. However, the clip played fine in the media players, such  as RealPlayer.
    If anyone has any advice on this, it would be  appreciated. I would prefer to fix this issue correctly rather than have to manually interpret or transcode the footage each time I want to edit it.
    Btw, I also posted this question on a forum with Nokia N8 Users, and others also tried it out and had same or similar issues. They also tried on CS5 and it still didn't work.
    *UPDATE* I just tested again to change the file from .mp4 to .mov by simply renaming it, and this time it loaded perfectly into Premiere. However, I have to do this on my XP computer, as my Windows 7 doesn't change the format of file by simply renaming it. Hence, I would still like help with getting it to recognise the .mp4 correctly though in the first place, rather than having to rename my files each time on the XP computer.

    Moshpit84 did you utilize the uninstallers located in Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers to remove your installation of Premiere Pro?  Also what version of the Adobe Application Manager are you currently using?

  • Problem with Alpha Channel

    The top level track on my project contains an alpha channel. However, being the top level track the tracks below it are invisible.
    I have read the "Compositing, alpha channels, and adjusting clip opacity" page. It tells me that I "can choose how to interpret the alpha channel in a file in the Interpret Footage dialog box. Choose Invert Alpha Channel to swap areas of opacity with areas of transparency, or choose Ignore Alpha Channel to not use the alpha channel information at all."
    However, when I do this (ie. inverse the alpha channel in the asset) I get the following before and after results:
    Summary of goal: I want to adjust the transparency of the top track so that the lower tracks appear.
    Help.

    If you want to adjust the transparency of a clip, you modify its Opacity property.
    Changing the alpha channel properties in the Interpret Footage settings is for when the alpha channel of an asset is not being interpreted/used correctly by the application.

  • Alpha channel in Exporters

    Hello,
    I'm having difficulties with alpha channel in an exporter. Symptoms - no alpha channel is given to my exporter by Premiere Pro when using source with alpha channel. I created a sample test video that has rows of (red pixel, green pixel, blue pixel, alpha pixel). So, while examining bits in the memory, I always see 0xff for alpha component (i.e, red pixel looks like 0xff 0x00 0x00 0xff, green pixel looks like 0x00 0xff 0x00 0xff, blue pixel looks like 0x00 0x00 0xff 0xff, and alpha pixel looks like 0x00 0x00 0x00 0xff), which looks to me like no alpha channel given in the frame. I request frames in BGRA_4444_8u pixel format. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but shouldn't that color format give me alpha component if source has alpha? I thought "ok, may be sequence or project settings have setting that i'm not enabling to preserve alpha", but as I found out, Premiere Pro preserves alpha unless explicitly told not to preserve by user. SDK Exporter sample project description mentions support for uncompressed 8 bit RGB with or without alpha. Does that mean that Premiere Pro should give frames with alpha channel if source had it? I looked at how sample exporter requests frames from Premiere Pro and only color format-specific info is custom 'sdk' color format, unless I overlooked something.
    Thank you,
    Petro

    Hi Petro,
    I looked into the SDK samples, and there was a few adjustments I had to make to get the alpha channel to round trip successfully, when exported out using the SDK Exporter, and reimported using the SDK File Importer.
    First, I had to make sure info in the file header was set correctly.  In WriteSDK_FileHeader(), I set the bit depth according to the codec setting retrieved using:
    mySettings->exportParamSuite->GetParamValue(exID, 0, ADBEVideoCodec, &codecSubType);
    For "SDK file format", 32 means there's alpha, and 24 means no alpha.  For the two video "codecs" supported, I set it like this:
    switch(codecSubType.value.intValue)
        case SDK_8_BIT_RGB:
            mySettings->SDKFileRec.depth = 32;
            break;
        case SDK_10_BIT_YUV:
            mySettings->SDKFileRec.depth = 24;
            break;
    The other change I had to make was in RenderAndWriteVideoFrame().  One of the parameters for RenderVideoFrame(), SequenceRender_ParamsRec, includes a member called inCompositeOnBlack. Again, I set this according to the codec:
    switch(codecSubType.value.intValue)
        case SDK_8_BIT_RGB:
            renderParms.inCompositeOnBlack = kPrFalse;
            break;
        case SDK_10_BIT_YUV:
            renderParms.inCompositeOnBlack = kPrTrue;
            break;
    This inCompositeOnBlack may be the problem you're running into.  You should set it to false if you want the alpha preserved.
    Regards,
    Zac

  • Premiere to Flash workflow ?  (Maybe AEFX to Flash)

    Hopefully someone has some experience with Premiere to Flash workflows and can help me here. (Apart from encoding some flvs...I have none!)
    I am shooting a number of people separately on a chroma bg so that in the end result they will appear composited alongside each other on a web page. (on a white bg).
    They respond to mouse clicks with some action and dialogue.
    Obviously I need to key the scenes in Premiere or AEFX (unless Flash can do a key?).
    What do I supply to the Web page Author?
    (I belive I should supply them with best source material)
    - I can NOT produce an avi/mov from Premiere with an alpha channel
    - I CAN produce an avi /mov from AEFX with an alpha channel (slow process for 100+ clips)
    - what / how to do this? eg can flash files have transparency.

    O.K
    It is possible to encode an alpha channel into an flv from Premiere and it works perfectly (but is limited by the quality of the Keyers in Premiere.)
    Will be fine for the web page project I am doing and will be a lot quicker. (Batch Encoding - woooohooooo!)
    BTW: There is an Encode alpha button in the flv export settings.
    (I would like to thank me for all my help)

  • Premiere Cs3 Importing mp4 at incorrect framerates, how do I fix this?

    I'm using Open Broadcast Software to record mp4 videos. I'm using Premiere Cs3 to edit those videos.
    I had made a few changes to the settings in OBS to make streaming to twitch better, but after reverting my settings to record rather than stream I'm running into a problem. When I import mp4 videos I made after this point, Premiere interprets the footage as if it was shot at 1,000 fps instead of the 60fps I shot it at. I know I can reinterpret the footage at 60 fps but this causes problems, like dropping the audio and looping/distorting random frames.
    I wasn't having this problem before. I'm a bit of a novice, and this is all way over my head.

  • Can't export alpha channel on a lower 3rd

    I was able to sucessfuly change the font color of my live type.
    I am intermediate to graphics and I was using the Digital Duice Editor's Took kit #10 - #239 lower third to use as a lower third while adding text in motion. I thought the alpha channel was built in. When I export in motion to .mov I get the lower third, my animated text, but a black background (no alpha to lay over the video) Slap me if this has been asked before, but I have tried a lot of things and still have the black background exported. Do I need to add the alpha overlay that comes with the lower third #239 in motion to make this a mask?
    The Digital juice lower third works well in FCP and allows me to super impose it over video. Do I have to set up motion to have an alpha background before I impor the lower third?

    I am intermediate to graphics and I was using the Digital Duice Editor's Took kit #10 - #239 lower third to use as a lower third while adding text in motion.< </div>
    You are rendering out of Juicer 3? You have done in the past, going to FCP, and the alpha is intact? Then it must be your settings out of Juicer or you have not interpreted the alpha prperly in Motion. It might be straght or premultiplied, depending on your settings in Juicer.
    Exporting out of Motion with alpha is easy if you know how to select the proper codec. It must be Animation (ther are other alpha-aware codecs but Animation is idiotproof).
    Without watching over your shoulder, it's difficutl to tell whaich of the many beignner's mistakes you could be making. Once you figure it out, though, you wil lnever make them again.

  • Trying to animate a clip's motion in Premiere 6

    Hi Premiere experts,
    I am a brand new Premier user with an old v6 on a Windows 7 machine.
    I am trying to animate a clip's motion along a motion path... and now I figured out how to import a graphic clip in to the project window, put it in the timeline and then drag that clip to the "Effect Controls" palette, and I'm now in the "Motion settings dialog box".
    But I want my graphic clip to have a transparent background so hopefully I'll be able to put it on top of another image so it will appear to be moving on that background image... I made my base graphic file a GIF with a transparent background so hopefully that would work for this purpose, but I can see when I select a background color in the "Motion settings dialog box", that my graphic clip does not take on the background color.
    So I'm trying to figure out how to make my graphic so it'll have a transparent background and then put a different background image behind it.
    Thanks for any help,
    numetro

    Hi Bill and other experts,
    Below are the paragraphs in the Premiere 6 instructions that apply to my questions... I found this information about rendering the background of an image clip graphic as transparent so it will take on the color or image that is behind it, but then the information in these paragraphs does not tell me these things:
    1- Where is the Alpha Channel key? - Can't find this in the instructions.
    2- Where is the Transparency Settings dialog box? - Can't find this in the instructions.
    3- Where is the Export Settings dialog box? - Can't find this in the instructions.
    I've saved my PSD graphic file with a "straight" alpha channel that defines the area of the image that should be treated as transparency, but the questions above are the stopping points to getting these methods (described below in paragraphs copied from the instructions) to work.
    Also at the bottom here there is a paragraph about previewing in the monitor window... one method works but the main method of just hitting enter is still giving me an error message.
    Using the Alpha Channel Key
    Images represented on video are composed of three grayscale images called channels--one red, one green, and one blue. Such images are called RGB images. An alpha channel is a fourth channel in an RGB image that defines what parts of the  image are transparent or semitransparent. Many programs, such as Adobe  Illustrator and Photoshop, use alpha channels so that you can specify  transparent regions in an image. An alpha channel is either straightpremultiplied,  depending on the program that created the image. When an image contains  a straight alpha channel, the transparency information is stored only  in the alpha channel. When an image contains a premultiplied alpha  channel, the background color that is intended to be transparent is also  blended into the edges of an image. Use the Alpha Channel key on clips  that contain a straight alpha channel, such as images created in Adobe  Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe After Effects.
    When you use the Alpha Channel key with a clip to which you have applied or plan to apply motion, select  the Use Clip's Alpha option in the Motion Settings dialog box. If this  setting is not selected, the clip's bounding box will appear when the  clip moves. See Specifying alpha channel and color options.
    (Where is the Alpha Channel key? - Can't find this in the instructions)
    Specifying alpha channel and color option
    You can include a fill color and specify how Premiere treats the alpha channel of the clip.
    In the Motion Settings dialog box, choose any of the following options:
    Reset - Removes the distortion, delay, rotation, and zoom settings for a selected keyframe.
    Fill Color - Specifies  a background color that fills the frame behind the moving clip. To  select a background color, click the desired color on the thumbnail in  the Fill Color box (the pointer turns into the eyedropper tool when it  is on the thumbnail), or click the color swatch above the thumbnail to  access the color picker and choose a color. This color appears in  previews and the rendered video program only if the clip is placed in  the Video 1 track.
    Alpha: Use Clip's - Superimposes  a clip using its existing alpha channel. This is the normal setting for  titles or graphics created in another application that supports alpha  channels, such as Adobe Photoshop. This option affects only those clips  that have been assigned an alpha channel key type in the Transparency  Settings dialog box. For information on alpha channels, see Using the Alpha Channel key.
    (Where is the Transparency Settings dialog box? - Can't find this in the instructions)
    Alpha: Create New - Creates  a transparent fill for clips that do not have an existing alpha  channel. With this option selected, an alpha channel is created for the  areas in the clip that have been assigned a key type in the Transparency  Settings dialog box. See Using the Alpha Channel key.
    Note: - Choosing  the Create New option for an image containing an alpha channel  overwrites the original alpha channel when the image is superimposed.
    Choosing Export Settings
    As part of the process of exporting,  check the options in the Export Settings dialog box. The initial export  settings are the same as the settings you specified in the Project  Settings dialog box when you first started the project. Export settings  don't update as you work on your project, however, so it's a good idea  to make sure that all export settings are still the ones you want.  Although the Export Settings dialog box is similar to the Project  Settings dialog box, important differences exist. For example, the  Special Processing panel is included so that you can apply certain  changes to all clips in the Timeline at export time, such as resizing,  cropping, and noise reduction.
    (Where is the Export Settings dialog box? - Can't find this in the instructions)
    Note: Some capture-card software and plug-in software provide their own dialog  boxes with specific options. If the options you see are different that  those described in Premiere's online Help refer to the documentation for  your capture card or plug-in.
    To preview motion in the Monitor window:
    1 -  Click OK to save and close the motion settings.
    2  - Do one of the following:
    Build a preview file:  move the yellow work area bar so it covers the clip with the motion  settings and press Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac OS).
    THIS DOES NOT WORK - I GET AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT SAYS: "An error occured while making the movie. Error writing file (disk full?)." ... BUT MY DISK/HARD DRIVE IS NOT FULL - IT STILL HAS 40 GIGS OPEN ON IT.
    Render-scrub  the area you want to preview: hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac  OS); when the cursor becomes a downward pointing arrow, scrub in the Timeline window's time ruler.
    THIS WORKS WHEN SCRUBBING THE AREA TO PREVIEW IN THE TIMELINE.
    Thanks for any help with these questions,
    numetro

  • Premiere Elements Misinterprets Clip Size on Import

    I set up my Premiere project for DV/NTSC 16:9 48 then import clips that have those properties. Premiere interprets the clips as 540x480. The clips display correctly in the free MS program MoveMaker. Why are they displaying incorrectly in Premiere?

    Flash Curious
    I do not have Premiere Elements 13 installed at the present time, so I did the testing with Premiere Elements 12/12.1 on Windows 7 64 bit.
    I could not confirm the appearance of 540 x 480 reading anywhere for the MOD03B.MOD file.
    The file before it saw Premiere Elements
    Media Info Properties Readout
    720 x 480 16:9
    29.97 interlaced frames per second
    Field Order = Upper Field First
    Premiere Elements Project Assets/Properties from Thumbnail
    720 x 480
    29.97 interlaced frames per second
    Field Order = Upper Field First
    But, the Pixel Aspect Ratio = 0.9001 which is characteristic of 4:3 and not 16:9.
    All of this is consistent with the old story of the mod widescreen behavior in Premiere Elements.
    And, the remedy was/is
    1. Open Premiere Elements to the Expert workspace and set the project preset manually to
    NTSC DV Widescreen.
    2. Then import your .mod widescreen (in some cases, you may have to rename the file extension from .mod to .mpg and then do the import).
    Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets.
    3. In Project Assets, right click the thumbnail for the file, select Interpret Footage. In the Interpret Footage dialog, go to Pixel Aspect Ratio section, and dot the Conform to: which you then set to D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2121).
    I did not have to rename the file extension from .mod to .mpg for this to work for me with your file.
    When you tried this, did you manually set the project preset or did you let the project do it for you automatically? If you have not already, please
    do this with the project preset set by you not the project. To do that, before import of the file into the project.. Expert workspace
    File Menu/New/Project and Change Settings
    In Change Settings, set for NTSC DV Widescreen and click OK to leave Change Settings.
    You will next see the new project dialog. Make sure that you have a check mark next to Force Selected Project Setting on This Project and then OK out of there.
    Then import your .mod widescreen file into the project with Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets.....and so on.
    This should work for you. If it does, we can discuss the pros and cons of the NTSC DV Widescreen project preset versus NTSC Hard Disk Flash Memory Camcorder Widescreen one (relates to your Field Order if your destination is DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc).
    This is what I am getting for Properties when I right click the Project Assets thumbnail for your .mod file
    This is what your .mod file looks like after I did the Pixel Aspect Ratio/Conform to: change in Interpret Footage
    As I said, this was all done with Premiere Elements 12/12.1. I will see if I can get Premiere Elements 13 installed
    to try this with it. The 12/12.1 and 13 results should be the same.
    Please consider.
    Thank you.

  • Replacing footage with an alpha channel

    greetings gurus... I'm working in FCP 5.1 with DVCPRO HD footage 720p @23.98fps. I have an edited sequence of green screen footage that I am happy with. I then keyed out the green from the original source footage and exported that footage with an alpha channel (the background keyed out in AE7). My goal is to open my FCP project and replace the original source footage with the new keyed out footage so that my edit remains in tact but now with a keyed out background. I'm using the reconnect media function in FCP and of course the footage is replaced, but without the alpha channel.
    When I import the keyed out footage directly the alpha channel is present; it just isn't present via the reconnect media method.
    Any suggestions on how to pull this off?

    it may be that for whatever reason FCP is not interpreting the alpha channel correctly when you use the reconnect option. for example, the reconnect option may assume that clip properties are unchanged. this may be esspecially true within the timeline, where instance properties are preserved.
    you may be able to manually overcome this by adjusting the alpha channel information in the clip properties window
