PreparedStatement and Statement

Hi Joe,
We are using the Driver provided by Weblogic (jdriver) and not the one from
Informix.Do you suggest any settings for this
thanks

Nirmala,
Which version of Weblogic do you use?

• What's the difference between "PreparedStatement" and "Statement"?

What's the difference between "PreparedStatement" and "Statement"?
Which is better??????

Read the docs for the two classes. The differences are apparent there.
Which one is better depends on your needs. I think that constructing and executing a PreparedStatement can be a bit less performant than just a Statement, if you're only executing the query one time. But I don't think that difference will normally be noticable in the context of a given application.
Additionally, if you have to pass any dates or strings to the query, you'll want PreparedStatement's parameters, rather than trying to format and escape things in the query string.

• PreparedStatement & regular Statement - different results for same select

I was wondering if someone could either
i) try this out for me to confirm my results or
ii) let me know what I am doing wrong
I'm one of the developers on a product and am currently investigating localization for the Thai language...just checking to see that Java and Swing have no problems with it. The only bewildering thing which has happened is noticing that some values which are fetched from the database display in Thai perfectly and other values display as a garble. Sometimes the exact same column is displayed correctly in one part of the program but is not OK in another part. I think I've figured out what it going on and suspect a bug in Oracle's JDBC:
Some selects were configured as PreparedStatements and those return the Thai properly. The more common case however was for programmers to use a simple Statement object for their select and it is in those that the multi-byte strings don't get returned properly.
The following code shows the problem that I am experiencing. I am basically executing the exact same select in 2 different ways and they are both giving different results as long as the column being queried contains a Thai character. If someone could grab and check it out and let me know if they see the same thing, I'd appreciate it. Just change the column/table name and the username/password/databaseIP to get it to run.

Hi Peter,
Are you using NCHAR column for Thai , or is your database character set set for Thai.
If you are using a NCHAR column for holding Thai data, then you have to use the
OraclePreparedStatement.setFormOfUse(...) before executing the select.
Regards
Elango. Hi Elangovan,
Thank you for answering.
The datatype on the column is VARCHAR2.
I did my initial tests without doing anything special to make sure the database is localized for Thai, and I was happy to find that almost everything still worked fine - I was able to save and retrieve Thai strings to the database almost perfectly.
The only problem I discovered was the difference between Statement and PreparedStatement selects on a column containing Thai. Colleagues of mine have said they see the same thing when testing on a Oracle database which has been configured specifically for the Thai customer.
I read somewhere that the current JDBC drivers are using an older version of the Unicode standard than the most current version of the Java SDK and that it was causing some problems with Korean. I'm wondering if maybe it's the same problem with Thai.

• Using PreparedStatement and the Oracle Error ORA-1000

Hi,
I have a question about PreparedStatement objects that is not so simple to explain for me. What I would like to know is: if I use a PreparedStatement following traditional and generic steps:
1- PreparedStatement pStmt = Connection.prepareStatement(sQuery);
2- pStmt.setXXX(i,j);
n - pStmt.setXXX(i,j);
n+1 - ResultSet rs = pStmt.executeQuery();
n+2 - while(rs.next()){ ... retrive ResultSet data  ... }
n+3 - rs.close()
n+4 - back to point number 2
and at the end (as you can see in the point numbered n+4), instead of closing the PreparedStatement pStmt using the close() method, I reuse the PreparedStatement pStmt comeing back to the point numebr 2 and setting again all its parameters with new values ... then ... what heppens in the Oracle database ? Has been the cursor (so the mamory area), associated to my PreparedStatement object pStmt, duplicated or is it the same ?
I know that Java allows you to do this kind of operations with PreparedStatement, and I know that in tha Java Documentation is explained to follow this strategy to optimize the execution time because in this way the same PreparedStatement is precompiled and prepared only once. But if I do a for loop following the steps explained before, after many iterations I have the error "ORA-1000: maximum open cursors exceeded". This error is the reason of my question. Does this error means that it's mandatory to close a PreparedStatement always, otherwise if you reuse it without closing it then the corresponding database cursor will be duplicated ? If it is so, then I think this is a contradiction with official java documentation ...
I'm using Oracle8i (version 8.1.7) and Oracle JDBC Thin Driver (Windows NT) for use with JDK 1.2.x. Moreover, in my database istance the parameter "maximum open cursor" is equal to 800 ...
Thank you very much for suggestions :-)

There is no need to close a prepared statement or its resultset for every iteration.
After the first iteration in a loop, all subsequent executions of it will close the previous resultset. By adding close() method, you are making one extra costly call to the DB for no reason.
Following is the sample code.I know what you are saying. In fact at the beginning I wrote my code in the same way of your sample (see the code of my first post at the begin of this page).
But doing so, after thousand iterations of the loop, I had "Oracle Error ORA-1000 : maximun open cursor exeeded" even if in my database istance the parameter "maximum open cursor" is equal to 8000.
At this moment in my code, for each iteration, I close the PreparedStatement and in this way I don't have anymore the error :-((
So it seems that only in theory we can reuse a preparedStatement without closing it. In fact if we see the oracle system table "$open_cursor" (as Konrad Pietzka suggest me) we can find that, for each interation,
at our line code "rs = pstmt.executeQuery();" correspond a new cursor in the database: this means that for each method "pstmt.executeQuery()" the database open a new cursor and do not use the previous one as it should.
I posted a question two months ago to search if someone had the same problem (it seems that Konrad Pietzka had the same situation) and was able to explain me what is the cause.
The only reason I found by myself for this problem, is that probably the Oracle JDBC Thin Driver for Windows NT/2000 has some bugs... but I'm not sure ...
Thank you very much for you time !!
bye :-))

• PreparedStatement and "in" clause

I am trying to pass an "in" clause to a SQL statement as a bind variable, but keep getting an "invalid number" runtime error:
The "where" clause of the SQL statement is:
String wherestmnt = "where sh.header_id in ? ";
I am using a PreparedStatement and am setting the bind variable as follows:
pstmt.setString(1,"(34552)")
If I change the "in" clause to "=" and do a set as pstmt.setString(1,"34552") it works fine.
Any advice?
null

There is also another error. If you need to use the in clause the values must be within paranthesis,
So if your query were like,
select * from emp where empno in (?)
then the bind would work. You can have as many ? as you want separated by commas and you can bind that many values..!

• PreparedStatement and bind variable

We are experiencing some werid performance break downs where database server looks healthy and our java applications are down to their knees.
I was wondering if someone could help me clarify the comparison between PreparedStatement and bind variable. When I execute a PreparedStatement in java through the JDBC thin driver, would the database consider it a dynamic SQL or is it a SQL using bind variable? If this same statement is executed 100000 times, is it parsed 100000 times? We are using JDK131. How does it work?
Is there any memory leak in PreparedStatement implementation in JDBC thin driver? Is there any known symptom to this problem? What is the recommended solution?
Thank you very much!

If PreparedStatement is parsed and cached, why is there setting to set implicit statement caching and explicit statement caching? Our DBA insists that it is parsed every single time. How would I find out for sure?
The SQLs have not been changed. This sudden performance degradation started when a new client went live and we experienced higher than usual volumn. We are connecting using JDBC thin client from weblogic server to Oracle 8.1.7. It's been happening everyday since the client went live and the only way to get the performance back is to shutdown and restart the database server.
I tried to search JDBC related issues. The only complain that I've found so far is that there may be some potential memory leak for a PreparedStatement. However, I have not found anything from Oracle's website that concurs to that.
What is my best bet?

• Database Procedure Calling by Using PreparedStatement and CallableStatement

Hi
We can execute Database Stored Procedure by using PreparedStatement and CallableStatement as well.Then what is the significance of having CallableStatement.
Please let me know the difference between these two Statement objects particularly in Stored Procedures Execution.
Thanks in advance
Basha007

A callable statement excecutes a stored procedure that's stored and run on the database server.
A prepared statement doesn't require a database stored procedure. It's parsed and cached by the JDBC driver, and allows you to specify parameters and bind values to them at runtime. Those are usually used in loop constructs where you want to repeatedly execute the same SQL with different values.
Not all RDBMS support stored procedures (e.g., MySQL), but every driver I've used allows PreparedStatements. - MOD

• To Joe Schell - jschell... - PreparedStatement and executeBatch()

Hi,
Thanks for the reply to the PreparedStatement and executeBatch() query. Is there any workaround for it other than using the Statement object?
thanks,
Nish

Could be.
But since I have no idea about what you are talking about, I can't really comment.
I respond to between 10-30 threads a day and read more than that. Consequently I need a context to understand questions.
If I have previously (recently) responded to a previous thread then if you post a response to it I will generally see it in less than a day. If is an older thread you might want to start a new thread. But if you do then add a link or put enough content so I can follow it.

• PreparedStatement vs Statement - When executing only once

Are there any performance implications in using PreparedStatement vs
Statement when you are executing the SQL only once? I am talking about all
kinds of SQL (Select, Update, Insert and Delete). If PrepatedStatement is
used, I would expect some overhead in setting values for different columns
separately and precompliling. Is that overhead significant enough to
degrade performance? If we execute statement only once, I do not expect to
any gain on performance.
I would appreciate any comments.
Sarat

It also depends on the database/driver combination,several database can be
configured to maintain a prepared statement cache at the DB level (I have
never done it myself, but I know people who has done this. Lately I use
mostly Oracle, for which I should not be configured an expert :)).
Also the weblogic's prepared statement cache only caches first so many
statements. If you have used them all up at the startup you are out of luck.
I know you already knew that, but may be helpful to the original poster.

• Suggestion regarding running preparedstatement and batchupdate

I have to insert many rows in database therefore i use preparedstatement and for loop.I want to know if i add all the query in batch and then execute will it give better performance .Will sql statement is still in compiled form when execute in batch .Let if i add another sql statement which is different from previous sql statement in batch what the effect it has on performance.

• I am connected to a time capsule both wirelessly and through ethernet...and state of the time capsule is solid green...the internet however doesn't work...The internet works fine when directly connected to my macbook pro but it won't work through the tc

I have deleted time machine preferences...restarted the modem a bunch of times, restored time capsule to it's original settings...after I first set it up in Airport Ulitity its shows a page quickly that states there is a internet problem, but the page quickly goes away before I can read what it says exaclty and states the internet connection problem is resolved...
However it's not resolved, I'm also having trouble doing a back up to my time capsule...I recently purchased a new macbook and retrieved/restore what was on the time capsule to the new computer...that worked fine...wireless worked fine...however when I tried to back up the new macbook...it would faii stating that there isn't enough room on the TC to do a back up...
I didn't end up keeping the new macbook, I was just using it/trying it out while my current macbook pro was being repaired (logic board)
Ever since I got my current macbook back from repair...my backups have failed due to their not being enough space to perform the back up...in the past the back ups would happen and old back ups would be replaced...
I think this has to do with my current computer having a new name after the repair..."Adam's macbook pro 2" vs "Adam's macbook pro"
The internet was working fine wirelessly through the TC a day ago, but it wasn't allowing my other laptop that was connected via ethernet access to the internet...I had a self assigned IP address error then...I don't have that problem now, but it's not transmitting internet at all...even though it's in a solid green state.
I have no problem completely wiping out my TC including the previous back ups on it...just don't know how to go about it...I have restored it to factory settings a bunch of times and created the network from scratch...just hasn't fixed the issue
Is there more prefences files I should delete

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

• Implicit vs explicit close of resultsets and statements?

Hi friends.I am a newbie Java Developer..Okay Here goes
I have just made a LAN based Java application using Swing,JDBC with backend as MS-Access..The backend is on a shared network drive..
The application is distributed as jar files on the LAN PCs..
Everywhere I have connected to the database I have just closed the connection explicitly like this
con.close();
I do not close the associated resultset and statement explicitly
The specification says associated statements and resultsets close when you close
the connection,even if you don't explicitly close them
Also I am not using connection pool..its simple basic connection using DriverManager
Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
String url = "jdbcdbcSN name";
String user = "";
String pw = "";
con = DriverManager.getConnection(url, user, pw);
Statement stmt = con.createStatement();
String select = "" ;
ResultSet rows = stmt.executeQuery(select);
On the net everyone says to explicitly close everything..but I did not know that
earlier..
If specification says everything closes on
closing connection why do ppl insist on closing everything explicitly..?
Or is this driver dependent..don't the drivers go through the specification..
My driver is the Sun JDBC ODBC bridge.....
I found this method DriverManager.setLogwriter()
It prints out a trace of all JDBC operations..
So I ran a sample program with this method included...
I redirected output to a log file..
In that program I just explicitly close the connection without closing the
statements and resultsets explicitly...
After running the program and seeing the log I saw that the statements
and resultsets are closed implicitly If I just close the connection explicitly..
I am putting the log file and the code..
Have a look at the end of the log file..
Code
import java.sql.;
import java.io.;
class gc4test

• Closing resultset and statements

Hi!
I just got told that I do not need to close my resultsets and statements in the code, it it enough that the connection are closed. Is this correct?
Eg:
public method myMethod() {
ResultSet rs = null;
Statement sqlStmt = null;
try {
query = "SELECT something";
rs = sqlStmt.executeQuery(query);
if (rs.next())
do something...
// close rs
if (rs != null) {
rs.close();
rs = null;
sqlStmt.close();
sqlStmt = null;
} // end try
catch (errors)...
finally {
if (con != null) { <-- Is this line enough to close everything and release connections?
try {
con.close();
catch (exception)...
} // end finally

No, you have to explicitly close the resultset, statement, and connection in order to release resources allocated to each of them. Closing the connection will only relase the connection, not the resultset, and statement.
you could do all of it in the finally as follows:
finally {
try {
if (rs != null) {
rs.close();
if (stmt != null) {
stmt.close();
if (conn != null) {
conn.close();
} catch (Exception e) {}
also there is no need to set rs = null, stmt = null after the close()

If I go back to Settings and then go into iCloud again it's not set up and appears as I stated at the beginning of this paragraph.
Nothing works and the sync does not occur. Contacts are empty and Calendar has no entries.

• Retrieve city and state from zip code that is entered by user

I am trying to use AJAX to retrieve city and state from a table based on a zip code that is entered by the user. Two are text fields (zip code and city) and one is a SELECT field (state).
1. I defined an application item called TEMPORARY_APPLICATION_ITEM.
2. I defined an application process called SET_CITY_STATE as follows:
a. Process point: on demand
b. type: anonymous block
c. process text:

DECLARE
v_city VARCHAR2 (100);
v_state VARCHAR2 (2);
CURSOR cur_c
IS
SELECT city, state
FROM ZIP
WHERE zip = v ('TEMPORARY_APPLICATION_ITEM');
BEGIN
FOR c IN cur_c
LOOP
v_city := c.city;
v_state := c.state;
END LOOP;
apex_util.set_session_state('P2_CO_CITY',v_city);
apex_util.set_session_state('P2_CO_STATE',v_state);
EXCEPTION
WHEN OTHERS
THEN
apex_util.set_session_state('P2_CITY','Unknown city');
apex_util.set_session_state('P2_STATE',null);
END;

3. Javascript is defined in the region header:

4. In the HTML Form Element Attributes of the P2_CO_ZIP text item: onchange="pull_city_state(this.value)";
The city and state are not being populated. I checked the select statement and it is retreiving the city and state in SQL WORKSHOP > SQL COMMANDS.
I would like to use it for the mailing address as well, so I would need to make the application process / javascript a bit more generic to be used in two places.
I placed the application on apex.oracle.com:
Workspace: RGWORK
Application: Online Certification Application (28022)
Can someone assists, please.
Thank you,
Robert

Hi Robert,
Try using XML instead of session state -
Change the application on demand process with the following script -
>
DECLARE
v_city VARCHAR2 (100);
v_state VARCHAR2 (2);
CURSOR cur_c
IS
SELECT city, state
FROM ZIP
WHERE zip = v ('TEMPORARY_APPLICATION_ITEM');
BEGIN
FOR c IN cur_c
LOOP
v_city := c.city;
v_state := c.state;
END LOOP;
OWA_UTIL.mime_header ('text/xml', FALSE);
HTP.p ('Cache-Control: no-cache');
HTP.p ('Pragma: no-cache');
OWA_UTIL.http_header_close;
HTP.prn ('
');
HTP.prn ('<desc>this xml genericly sets multiple items</desc>');
HTP.prn ('
' || v_city || '
');
HTP.prn ('
' || v_state || '
');
HTP.prn ('
');
EXCEPTION
WHEN OTHERS
THEN
OWA_UTIL.mime_header ('text/xml', FALSE);
HTP.p ('Cache-Control: no-cache');
HTP.p ('Pragma: no-cache');
OWA_UTIL.http_header_close;
HTP.prn ('
');
HTP.prn ('<desc>this xml genericly sets multiple items</desc>');
HTP.prn ('
' || 'Unknown city' || '
');
HTP.prn ('
' || '' || '
');
HTP.prn ('
');
END;
>
in your javascript make sure you typing the application process name correctly as it is case sensitive.
Hope this helps,
