PreparedStatement.setArray() ... again

Hi Joe;
I am aware that weblogic pool driver does not support Oracle Array's
via .setArray. This is because Oracle Array's require
ArrayDescriptor, and when I call this class with a Weblogic Pool
Connection, a ClassCastException is thrown because the Connection
object is not an OracleConnection.
Is there anyway I can use PreparedStatement.setArray() without
getting this ClassCastException? Are there any known workarounds that
prevents me from having to use Oracle Specific classes?
I am using WLS 6.1sp4 on Oracle 9i

I am using WLS 6.1sp4 on Oracle 9iHi. In 6.1sp5 we implement a method on pool connections, getVendorConnection(),
which for those intractible cases where Oracle secretly requires a specific class
(it's secret because the method signatues says it takes a java.sql.Connection),
we provide a way to get a direct reference to the pooled oracle connection.
This is dangerous, because it gives application code a backdoor to the pooled
resource, and we can never again guarantee that future pool users are getting
sole access to the connection. Therefore, by default we will close and replace
any pooled connection after it is exposed in this way. Read the docs on this option,
and I can give advice too on the safe things to do with an exposed connection,
and later, how to retrieve the performance lost to the pool having to replace
exposed connections....

    I want to execute the following query: SELECT * FROM SOMETABLE WHERE IDFIELD IN (?)
    The number of values in the IN list is variable. How can I do this with a prepared statement?
    I am aware of the different alternatives:
    1) Keep a cache of prepared statement for each sized list seen so far.
    2) Keep a cache of prepared statements for different sizes (1, 5, 10, 20) and fill in the left over parameter positions with the copies first value.
    They both have the disadvantage that there could be many prepared statements for each query that get used once, and never used again.
    I have tried this:
    stmt.execute ("CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE LONGINTLIST AS TABLE OF NUMBER(15)");
    ArrayDescriptor desc = ArrayDescriptor.createDescriptor ("LONGINTLIST", conn);
    long idValues [] = {2, 3, 4};
    oracle.sql.ARRAY paramArray = new oracle.sql.ARRAY (desc, conn, idValues);
    PreparedStatement query = conn.prepareStatement ("SELECT * FROM MYTABLE WHERE ID_FIELD IN (?)");
    query.setArray (1, paramArray);
    But Oracle gives a data conversion error.
    I then tried this:
    PreparedStatement query = conn.prepareStatement ("SELECT * FROM MYTABLE WHERE ID_FIELD IN (SELECT * FROM TABLE (?))");
    This works and the rows are returned, but the Oracle optimizer does not like it very much, since it always does a full table scan even though there is a primary key index on ID_FIELD.
    Any ideas?
    I also tried this:
    OraclePreparedStatement oraQuery = (OraclePreparedStatement) query;
    oraQuery.setARRAY (1, paramArray);
    But same behavior.

    Please re-read the original message. As I mentioned,
    I am aware of the two commonly used alternatives.No actually the most used alternative is to build the SQL dynamically each time.
    I know how to get both of them to work, and have used
    both alternatives in the past. The downside to both
    these approaches is that you need to save multiple
    prepared statements for each query. What I am trying
    to find is a way of having only one saved prepared
    statement for a query having a variable number of IN
    clause parameters.You could probably use a stored procedure that takes an 'array' and then do the processing in the stored proc to handle each array element.
    However, your database might not support that stored procs or arrays. Or it might not cache it with arrays. And the overhead of creating the array structure or processing it in the proc might eat any savings that you might gain (even presuming there is any savings) by using a prepared statement in the first place. Of course given that you must be using an automated profiling tool and have a loaded test environment you should be able to easily determine if this method saves time or not.
    Other than that there are no other solutions.

    - setArray
    or
    - "select * from x where id in (?)"
    One solution would be to create the full query in a String and then execute that, but I wanted to use a preparedstatement and a ? parameter.
    Ex.:
    public void runSelect(String param){
    String sql = "select * from x where id in (" + param + ")";
    resultset = statement.executequery(sql);
    What I wanted was something more like:
    public void runSelect(String param){
    String sql = "select * from x where id in (?)";
    prepStatement = conn.prepare(sql);
    prepStatement.setObject(1, param); //setObject or setArray or something
    resultset = statement.executequery();
    }

  • Java.sql.PreparedStatement.setArray( ) not found in J2SE v1.3.1?

    Why do I get the error method setArray(int, Array) not found in interface java.sql.PreparedStatement? As per on-line documentation the method is available since version 1.2.
    In JDeveloper help I have read that...
    "JDeveloper uses J2SE definitions to describe an installed J2SE environment. This environment can be either a JRE (Java Runtime Engine) or an SDK. Note that if you are using a JRE, some features may not be available. Every JDeveloper project uses a J2SE definition to determine what version of the Java API to compile and run with."
    Is my problem because my JDeveloper installation is using a JRE and not an SDK?

    Sounds like a SQL problem. Not an expert in DB2 bu you might want to try INSERT INTO SESSION (col1name, col2name) VALUES (?,?);

  • PreparedStatement in two servlets

    Hello,
    I've got a doubt concerning PreparedStatement with JDBC.
    If I have the same statement in two different servlets, is my SQL compiled just once in the DBMS ?
    So, if I create a new Instance of PreparedStatement that was previously created in another servlet the statement is not created again.
    Is it true?

    The performance impact of PreparedStatement varies widely from DBMS to DBMS (and driver implementation to driver implementation).
    At one end, some systems merely implement PreparedStatement on top of Statement; the SQL is treated identically in the database no matter which statement type you use.
    At the other end are DBMS's such as Oracle, that work really hard to optimize PreparedStatement and have several internal layers.
    In Oracle, the compilation step is called a "parse", and there are 3 possibilities when executing a SQL statement using a PreparedStatement:
    no parse
    soft parse
    hard parse
    A hard or soft parse will occur when the execution connection.PrepareStatement is called. The ideal situation for each SQL statement is "parse once execute many".
    In a hard parse, Oracle looks at the SQL, computes a hashcode from the SQL text and looks for an appropriate execution plan in its caches. A cache miss occurs, Oracle prepares the execution plan, saves it in cache keyed by the hashcode, and binds the execution plan to the PreparedStatement (effectively speaking, at least, I'm not sure how the implementation achieves that). It's then ready for parameter binding and execute().
    In a soft parse, Oracle looks at the SQL, computes a hashcode from the SQL text and looks for an appropriate execution plan in its caches. A cache hit occurs, Oracle finds an existing execution plan and binds it to the PreparedStatement. Again, we're now ready for binding and execute(). In a parse, the vast bulk of the work and locking occurs in preparing an execution plan, so a soft parse is hugely better than a hard parse.
    Parse is avoided totally when new parameters are bound to an existing PreparedStatement and it's then executed. No parse is much better than a soft parse.
    You only get a soft parse in Oracle when the SQL matches EXACTLY; case, punctuation, and white space all matter. Also, retention in the cache depends on the memory available to Oracle, and the load on the system, in terms of number of different SQL statements being used. This is why it's so important to use parameter binding; "SELECT a FROM b WHERE c = 1;" is not an exact match for "SELECT a FROM b WHERE c = 2"; using ""SELECT a FROM b WHERE c = ?" allows the cache hit to occur.
    So coming back to the way you phrased your question: it would be better to use the same PreparedStatement object in both servlets, but because they're tied to a connection, that can be hard to achieve unless you've got a sophisticated database layer between you and the actual database (some of the better connection poolers also do statement caching if configured to do so). A good second best can be creating and using a new instance of PreparedStatement with IDENTICAL sql.

  • SetArray and PreparedStatement

    Is it possible to use setArray with a PreparedStatement (or setARRAY and OraclePreparedStatement, or anything else similar) to enable use of prepared statements in the situation where the query looks something like this:
    SELECT *
    FROM some_table
    WHERE some_field IN ( ? );
    where the number of elements in the set of the IN clause can vary on each execution?

    Can any one tell me how the setArray is used in PreparedStatement where in the Query takes 2 parameters. Now the requirement is that instead of me running the SQL in loop for different values, I just want to set the array using setArray method of PreparedStatement.

    setArray() method is for setting a 'array' value the prepared statement. it is very much similar to setInt(index, intValue) or setString(index,StringValue) methods.
    Array is thehe mapping in the Java programming language for the SQL type ARRAY.

  • PreparedStatement not working with Oracle

    Hi All,
    I am using preparedStatement in my JDBC code to fetch/insert values from oracle9i database.
    I am checking condition like if a given record does not exist then insert it else update it.
    First time it works when there is no row in database, however for subsequent run it's not able to return me the result though that row exist in database and this resulting in DuplicateKeyException becuase it try to create the row in db again.
    The code is working fine for MySQL DB2 and SQLServer but doesn't work in case oracle 9i

    ps.setString(i++, itemid);My first guess, looking at the above snippets, would be that the item_id field is a number and not a string and so you should be calling ps.setInt instead of ps.setString when setting that parameter.
    This is only a guess, however, since you have not posted what the actual error is, which will probably give a hint to what the actual error is.

  • NullPointerException on execution/ creation of a PreparedStatement

    Hi,
    I am facing a very weird problem. There is a jar file that is run from the command prompt connecting to SQL Server on the same machine. This program basically does some processing of records within a SQL transaction.
    Sometimes the program ends with a NullPointerException at a PreparedStatement for example on the both record and the transaction is rollbacked .
    Now if I run the program again for the same data, I may get a nullpointer exception at some other record for example on the 250th record.
    Now if you are beginning to feel that there is something wrong with the code then let me tell you this problem ,
    If I run the same jar file on another machine pointing to the earlier mentioned SQL Server and for the same data it runs perfectly fine.
    That is what is giving the creeps. In both the scenarios only thing changing is the machine on which it is being executed and the java version.
    Any Help on the above problem will be highly appreciated

  • JDBC PreparedStatement with Oracle 8.0.5 on Linux

    As the subject stated, I am using Oracle 8.0.5 on a Linux machine.
    When I am using a PreparedStatement, somehow, the binded variables are reversed in order.
    E.g.
    String sql = "INSERT INTO TABLE1 (X, Y) VALUES (?, ?)";
    PreparedStatement ps = conn.prepareStatement(sql);
    ps.setString(1, "1");
    ps.setString(2, "2");
    ps.executeUpdate();
    When I run the above, the insertion is successful. However, when I select the table, this is what I get.
    X Y
    2 1
    The values are reversed.
    This is the same for update statement too.
    If I do this,
    "UPDATE TABLE1 SET X = ? WHERE Y = ?"
    ps.setString (1, "3");
    ps.setString (2, "1");
    The above will not be successful.
    If I do this,
    ps.setString (2, "3");
    ps.setString (1, "1");
    The above is successful.
    Somehow the order of the binded variable get messed up.
    Does anyone has any idea why?

    The datatype of X and Y are both VARCHAR2(10) in this case.
    Even if they are numbers, they have the same problem. The order get reversed and the data inserted is incorrect.
    E.g. I have column M VARCHAR2(10) and column N NUMBER (2) in TABLE2.

    PreparedStatement ps = conn.prepareStatement(sql);

    The insert operation is still successful. But when you select it becomes,

    This is because the order of the variables get reversed again.
    Forgot to mention that if we have used Statement instead of PreparedStatement, we will not have such problem.
    E.g. Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
    String sql = "INSERT INTO TABLE2 (M, N) VALUES ('one', 1)";
    stmt.executeUpdate(stmt);
    The above will insert fine and when we do a select, the result is correct.

    Though the above works fine, I still prefer to use PreparedStatement because of performance issue. So anyone has any idea what exactly is happening?
    Hmmm, this ones a strange one.
    What type are X and Y in the database? If they are of
    type NUMBER why not try something like.
    ps.setInt(1, 1);
    OR
    ps.setLong(2, 2);
    and see if that makes any difference.

    First error, I had use ? also for column names, which is not accepted as the SQL query has to be precompiled.

  • Using PreparedStatement and the Oracle Error ORA-1000

    I have a question about PreparedStatement objects that is not so simple to explain for me. What I would like to know is: if I use a PreparedStatement following traditional and generic steps:
    1- PreparedStatement pStmt = Connection.prepareStatement(sQuery);
    2- pStmt.setXXX(i,j);
    n - pStmt.setXXX(i,j);
    n+1 - ResultSet rs = pStmt.executeQuery();
    n+2 - while(rs.next()){ ... retrive ResultSet data  ... }
    n+3 - rs.close()
    n+4 - back to point number 2
    and at the end (as you can see in the point numbered n+4), instead of closing the PreparedStatement pStmt using the close() method, I reuse the PreparedStatement pStmt comeing back to the point numebr 2 and setting again all its parameters with new values ... then ... what heppens in the Oracle database ? Has been the cursor (so the mamory area), associated to my PreparedStatement object pStmt, duplicated or is it the same ?
    I know that Java allows you to do this kind of operations with PreparedStatement, and I know that in tha Java Documentation is explained to follow this strategy to optimize the execution time because in this way the same PreparedStatement is precompiled and prepared only once. But if I do a for loop following the steps explained before, after many iterations I have the error "ORA-1000: maximum open cursors exceeded". This error is the reason of my question. Does this error means that it's mandatory to close a PreparedStatement always, otherwise if you reuse it without closing it then the corresponding database cursor will be duplicated ? If it is so, then I think this is a contradiction with official java documentation ...
    I'm using Oracle8i (version 8.1.7) and Oracle JDBC Thin Driver (Windows NT) for use with JDK 1.2.x. Moreover, in my database istance the parameter "maximum open cursor" is equal to 800 ...

    There is no need to close a prepared statement or its resultset for every iteration.
    After the first iteration in a loop, all subsequent executions of it will close the previous resultset. By adding close() method, you are making one extra costly call to the DB for no reason.
    Following is the sample code.I know what you are saying. In fact at the beginning I wrote my code in the same way of your sample (see the code of my first post at the begin of this page).
    But doing so, after thousand iterations of the loop, I had "Oracle Error ORA-1000 : maximun open cursor exeeded" even if in my database istance the parameter "maximum open cursor" is equal to 8000.
    At this moment in my code, for each iteration, I close the PreparedStatement and in this way I don't have anymore the error :-((
    So it seems that only in theory we can reuse a preparedStatement without closing it. In fact if we see the oracle system table "$open_cursor" (as Konrad Pietzka suggest me) we can find that, for each interation,
    at our line code "rs = pstmt.executeQuery();" correspond a new cursor in the database: this means that for each method "pstmt.executeQuery()" the database open a new cursor and do not use the previous one as it should.
    I posted a question two months ago to search if someone had the same problem (it seems that Konrad Pietzka had the same situation) and was able to explain me what is the cause.
    The only reason I found by myself for this problem, is that probably the Oracle JDBC Thin Driver for Windows NT/2000 has some bugs... but I'm not sure ...

    pstmt.setstring(2, "Test");it will be correct.
    when i put the column which type is VARCHAR2 in the first place like:

    Read the API docs and the JDBC Tutorials for the proper way to use a PreparedStatement. It may "work" to add the quotes, but it is definately not the right way to do it. What happens if the city entered contains an apostrophe? Your statement will be broken again. Like I said, use a PreparedStatement and use it right.
