Prevent Terminal from ALWAYS launching X11

Hi.
I've installed Leopard as an upgrade from Tiger and I have a MacBook 2Ghz - 2GB RAM
I know that Leopard launches X11 when I type xterm or something that needs xwindow.
The problem is that in my machine (unlike my colleague's who installed from scratch) as soon as I click on the terminal icon I get the X11 starting as well.
Moreover, as soon as quit Terminal (completely), X11 stays running. Then if I quit it, besides asking me for confirmation saying there are applications using it, it starts again. Sometimes I need to quit x11 2 times, other times even 4.
What's this? Is there something weird going on?
Why in my colleague's machine it only starts when necessary?
I also noticed that when x11 is running the fan of my macbook starts...and it gets hot...
Thanks a lot for your help.
Marco

Dear Bill,
thank you very much for your help. I think I kind of solved the problem.
The issue is about what bash was importing, I guess.
I'm not sure why I didn't find it out before, but I finally managed to make it work.
Basically, the alias with ssh -X was causing the launch of x11 at terminal startup (same with iTerminal).
Moreover, running fink init.sh was causing the same thing. I don't why that but, as fink does not support Leopard yet, I decided to remove it. I mainly used it for Latex, but I can always download it separately. It's handy sometimes to use Linux stuff like xfig, gimp, etc. but I can definitely wait until they release the version supporting Leopard.
I would also like to say thank you for solving the alias problem. Now, in .bash_profile I run source .bashrc so they are always loaded. Moreover, ssh -Y doesn't run x11 and that's good. It only does it when remotely I decide to run an app that needs x11. Which is very good (anyway, I usually do not use X remotely, unless I need to access webpages accessible only from university).
So thanks a lot again and have a Merry Christmas
Marco

  • Opening a new terminal window always launches X11

I did an update from Tiger to Leopard yesterday and while most things are fine, I have a peculiar problem, that every time I open terminal, it automatically launches X11 (the terminal window shows xset as the running application in the title bar). Annoyingly, the focus switches to X11 when it starts, too. I can quit X11, but opening a new window or tab in terminal will launch it again.
    Sequence of events:
    1. Machine had X11 installed under Tiger.
    2. Ran the Leopard update without installing the dev tools package (so as far as I understand, a new X11 wasn't installed during the process). At this point, the problem was present
    3. Installed dev tools - problem persists.
    4. Ran update to 10.5.2.
    5. Got the x11 2.1.4 package from here (http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz/wiki/X112.1.4) and ran the installer.
But I still have the problem. (In case you're wondering, there's no startup command specified in the Terminal settings, either. It should just start up running bash). Any ideas?

Yes, thanks - sorry I misremembered where the X11 install came from originally. Anyway, what's in my .profile is the command to run fink's /sw/bin/init.sh, which was adding the old X11 directory to my PATH variable. I still don't know why exactly that was making x11 launch every time I opened a terminal window, but I do have it fixed now.
As an aside, you will probably have to uninstall Fink and install the source and build another one. Last I looked there was no binary for Leopard. If you have Tiger version of Xcode Tools, you will also have to remove that, using the supplied script and install the new, Leopard-friendly 3.0.
Also, if you were using Darwin, that too is finito.

  • Prevent terminal from closing

Hi all, I'm new to solaris and i have some problem.. hope you guys can help me out.
Currently i'm doing a script for my project and I want to prevent people from exiting the terminal by clicking the "X" at the top right.
    so in short:
    when I run the script,
user cannot exit out of the terminal
    unless the scipt finish running.
    Thanks alot!

My first thought was to remove the frame with the "X" button, but its is added by the window manager; metacity, so it turned out to be a rather bad idea.
However, when you click 'X' in a terminal window it will send a SIGHUP to the window in question, so all you have to do is to catch SIGHUP signals before you run your script, i.e, to run "/bin/true" when you get a SIGHUP:
    # trap /bin/true HUP
    # ./path/to/some/script
A third method would be to determine the parent shell process from the script itself, and then use the 'nohup' command to force the parent process to ignore SIGHUPs, for example:
    mybox(~):$ cat dont_kill_me.sh
    #!/bin/sh
    shell=`ptree $$ |grep sh |head -1 |awk '{print $1}'`
    nohup -pa ${shell}
    while :; do
    /bin/echo "enter something: \c"
    read something
    echo "got: $something"
    if [ "${something}" = "quit" ]; then
    exit 0
    fi
    done
    mybox(~):$
If you run this script, it will not directly be affected by clicking the 'X'.
However, the nohup will only be effective during the lifetime of the script. So if you start the script and click "X", your script will finish, but once the script is finished the SIGHUP will be sent to the shell..

  • How to prevent iTunes from auto-launching at login

For some reason, after every restart or logout/login, iTunes will auto-launch at login.
I initially thought that iTunes Helper in Login Items may be the culprit. So, I removed it from the list of Login Items. But, iTunes still launches automatically after login.
How can I prevent the auto launch?

Yup. I think this may have to do with .itms files. Apple has allowed web sites to open itunes with an autolaunch command. I think that the .itms files are the ones that auto launch itunes. I think what we are suffering here is a misuse of the itunes autolaunch command. Web developers seem to be able to launch itunes and try to display their products for purchase. It seems like Itunes has been turned into a 'Pop-Up' advertisement. I hope Apple takes notice and fixes it. I have been having this problem since I got this new i5 Imac in January.

  • How To Keep The Controller in DVD Player From Always Launching

Everytime I launch the DVD Player, the controller is always on the desk top, and I have to manually hide it. How can I turn that function off? I looked in DVD Player preferences, and could't find anything. Just want to on/off controller manually.
    Thanks

That is the OS default feature; the best I could find is this key command: press Option-Command-C to show or hide the Controller. At least that would be easier and quicker than going to the Menu.

  • How can I prevent iPhoto from auto-launching when I plug in a card reader?

When I plug in a card reader, iPhoto assumes that it is being summoned and auto-magically launches itself. I don't want this to happen. I don't want iPhoto to ever launch without my permission, which I might grant once a year or so. Yet, every day I have to cope with it launching multiple times as I attempt to transfer photos to my hard drive. It is a minor annoyance, true, but it is an annoyance.
My question, then, is how can I make iPhoto stop doing this? I've searched its settings high-and-low, but to no avail. I've searched the System Preferences high-and-low, but to no avail. There must be something I'm missing.

    Hi John,
the next info is on using Image Capture to download the images. In the preferences though, you can choose to have nothing open when the camera is connected.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
    Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.

  • How can I prevent iPhoto from launching when I insert an SD card

I recently upgraded to a new iMac retina and am having trouble disabling iPhoto from launching when an SD card is inserted.
I have gone to iPhoto setting and disabled iPhoto from launching when a camera is connected.
I have also gone into image capture and selected no application as the hidden option for SD card actions when inserted.
Unfortunately the issue persists... two questions: can I do a terminal level disable to prevent iPhoto from launching or can I remove iPhoto from my computer?

    Have you tried this?
    Open the Image Capture app
    Select your SD Card
Click the little widget in the bottom right corner of the window
Select the program to launch, or "No application"
    it worked for me

  • How to prevent Terminal's character encoding from changing

I have a command-line script that runs continuously, and occasionally echos to STDOUT some binary data that, apparently, changes the way Terminal displays certain characters. Is there any way of preventing this from happening? Say, by locking down Terminal's character-encoding?
    ...Rene

    Rene,
I am not sure if you can prevent this thing from happening but you can set things back to normal by using the reset.
Another possible solution is to write the output of STDOUT to a file so that it will not be displayed on screen.

  • How can I prevent Applications from being copied to external drive?

    Hello,
    Just a quick one...
I run a studio in an education evironment. We've got quite a lot of software installed on our machines (Mac OS X 10.7.4) and there's always the chance that students will copy applications from the Applications folder onto an external drive to take home!
Obviously this is becoming increasingly easy with large USB sticks and Applications which are entirely contained in the Applications folder.
Is there any way that students can still run these applications during class but prevent them from copying the whole applications?
    With thanks in advance,
    Lawrence

You can hide the Applications folder, but it isn't a total solution. Open Terminal and type:
    cd /
    sudo chflags hidden /Applications

  • Data Execution Prevention prevents itunes from opening on my user ID, but not every other user ID.

I completely deleted every Apple file from my computer.  There are 4 user IDs on my computer.  Mine is the Administrator, my husband's ID my son's ID. and a completely new ID I set up to see if I could get iTunes to work.
I reinstalled iTunes 10.5 on my Administrator ID.  The installation went fine, but iTunes will not open in my ID, or my husband's ID.  I get the message that Data Execution Prevention has closed it.  iTunes will open in my son's ID, as well as the new ID I set up for iTunes testing.
I have tried uninstalling (deleting ALL Apples files) and reinstalling on my ID as a Standard user.  Same thing.  iTunes doesn't work on my ID or husband's, but does on the other 2 User IDs.
I have not activated Microsoft Outlook on the 2 IDs where iTunes works.  Outlook is activated on the other 2 User IDs.
Does something about Outlook cause me to get the DEP error?  Is there a way to fox this problem?  I really don't want to have to go to a completely different User ID everyt ime I want to use iTunes.
I am using Windows Vista Home Deluxe, and installing the 64-bit iTunes download on the Apple.com website.
I have used instructions from several documents here on the Apple boards.  The ones I use most are "iTunes for Windows:Doesn't open after upgrading in Windows Vista of Windows 7".  "iTunes for Windows of Windows 7:Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues", and on this one, I followed the instructions for user-specific troubleshooting.  I also followed the instructions in "General installation troubleshooting".
I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes so many times, i can almost do it in my sleep.  Somebody please help.  My iPhone and iPod need updating!!  Thanks!!!

  • Prevent JNLP from being cached in the Java Web Start cache

    Hi,
when i launch a JNLP it's always being cached in the Java Web Start cache. Is there a way to prevent it from being cached? Some attribute/property inside it?
    Thanks!

Set the http headers in the response from the server when the client downloads the jnlp file.
    eg Cache-control no-cache
Expires (use same date as "date" header)
Note that over SSL on Internet Explorer 8 this will not work. All other configurations should be ok.

  • Right-click "Search Google" always launches Safari

I don't know if it was an app I installed or if it is a Leopard feature, but if I right click on text from just about any app, I can "Search Google". For example, in Textedit, Word, an email.
It always launches the search in Safari however even though FF is my default browser.
Is there a way to change it so search results come up in FF?

One can assume Apple "hearts" google
I am reasonable sure there is a terminal hack to change it. I prefer dogpatch myself.

  • Supress/Prevent messages from FM call

    Hi all,
In my program, I have a function module call,
during an error inside the FM, an Information message pops up.
I'd like to stop this from happening.
The FM is not RFC-enabled so I can't use 'IN BACKGROUND TASK'.
Also, Im not allowed to change the FM
nor am I allowed to create a copy of the FM (...then change the message).
How can I prevent messages from showing or popping up?
Can I use a variation of MESSAGES INTO or something else.
Is there a way to hardcode setting to run in background?
Or atleast any ways to suppress/prevent messages from the FM.
    Thanks all!

when calling the FM adopt your call with following exception:
    error_message = any free number, e.G. 9.
    That will have following effect:
If the error_message addition is specified after EXCEPTIONS, all MESSAGE statements that are executed during the processing of the function module and do not have the RAISING addition are affected as follows:
Messages of the type S, I, or W are not sent but are noted in the log background processing.
Messages of the type E and A trigger the exception error_message and set sy-subrc to n_error. The message class, message type, message number, and the contents of possible placeholders for the MESSAGE statement are in the fields sy-msgid, sy-msgno, sy-msgty, and sy-msgv1, ... , sy-msgv4. With messages of the type A, the ROLLBACK WORK statement is also explicitly executed.
Messages of the type X are not influenced. As always, they cause program termination with a short dump

    Hey there 79usma79!
I have a couple of articles for you that can help you troubleshoot the issues you are seeing with iTunes on Windows XP. The first is a general troubleshooting article, which can be found right here:
iTunes for Windows XP: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1421
This article can help you find out if there are any conflicts between your copy of Windows XP and iTunes, and can tell you what to do if there are. Before going down the troubleshooting route though, you should take a look at this article, which can help you back up your entire iTunes library to an external hard drive, so if this issue is recurring, you will be able to restore from that backup and will not have to worry about losing your playlists or music again:
iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!
