Prevent two people working on same file in file sharing?

Any way to do this? I need to figure out a way to lock people out of manipulating any one file when it's in use via file sharing.
Thank you,
katie

Multi-user access depends on application support to check the file before opening or writing it.
In other words, the OS already supports what you ask, but it's up to the application to perform the relevant checks - when the first app opens the file it needs to set a flag to say it has exclusive access to it, and when the second app opens the file it has to read that flag and know not to save any changes.

  • Multiple people working on same instance

Can two people work on same instance at the same time. If one user makes the change and resfreshes the page, he sees the changes made by other user?

    Hi,
Are you sure you want to go the Split-N (now called "Multiple" in Oracle BPM 10g) route? From your earlier thread, here's what I think you're trying to do:
Just to clarify again - (1) One guy has a task assigned to him
    - (2) He assigns same task ( creates duplicate copy ) and assigns to some else in different role.
    - (3) Now both should edit the task , meaning if one changes the tasks , other person should see it as well.>
I'll typically use a Split-N when I have a dynamic number of copies I want to create that is determined at runtime. Examples include:
    a) you form an adhoc committee of people in a role and you want them to approve disapprove a proposal and you determine who's on the committee and the number of people on the committee at runtime.
    b) you have a request for quote from a variety of different suppliers and if it's a large order you send out x number of requests to suppliers and if it's a small order you send out y number of requests to suppliers
    c) you have a batch of things (e.g. healthcare claims) represented by one work item instance and you want to have workers treat the individual claims as single work items inside the same process (a single work item might have 100 claims that would spawn 100 work items).
If you're still thinking you need to use a Split-N activity, this thread explains how to use it: Re: multiple-join: get value of each participant
I could be wrong, but I think you might be better served if you use a Split activity and not a Split-N.
For your use case it sounds like you'd have two transitions coming out of the Split activity.
To meet your first criteria ("One guy has a task assigned to him"), one transition would go to an Automatic activity where the original person is assigned the copy of the original instance (use "next.participant" feature to assign it to him). Following this Automatic activity, it would flow to an Interactive activity where only the original participant could edit the work item instance.
To meet your second criteria ("He assigns same task ... and assigns to some else in different role"), you need to add a second transition that would go to an Automatic activity where the second person is assigned the copy of the original instance. Following this Automatic activity, it would flow to an Interactive activity where only the second person could edit the work item instance.
Both Interactive activities would have a transition to the Split's Join activity.
To meet your third criteria ("Now both should edit the task , meaning if one changes the tasks , other person should see it as well"), right mouse click the Split activity -> click "Properties" -> click "Advanced" on the left side -> uncheck the checkbox beside the text "Generate independent Copies". Now if one edits their copy, the other will see the change reflected.
The only concern I have with this approach is a bug I encountered last week when I turned off generate copies in a Split using Oracle BPM 10g. In 10g, I noticed that the instance remained locked occasionally after one of the participants "touched" the instance. Once locked, I could not invoke the copy again. It did not happen every time, but often enough where I decided to work around the new 10g bug by leaving the property set to generate copies and writing to an outside database table once one of the people edit it and reading from the same outside database table before someone edits it.
    Hope this helps,
    Dan

Have the project, events and media on one drive which is common to both macs.
You can download FCP X to both macs using the same Apple ID that it was purchased with.

  • Photoshop CS4- Does anyone know how to tell if two people are using same file?

Photoshop CS4- Does anyone know how to tell if two people are using same file?

    Hi,
Thanks for your response. I'm not the solution in the link.
The problem that I am having at work it that several people in our department want to be able to update a file, but we want to be sure that no one else is currently editing that file. If someone has the file open, it's helpful to know the user's name so we can talk about when the next person can edit the file. This works in Excel files that we use, and I would love to find out how to do it in Photoshop and Illustrator.
    Thanks for the help!

  • TS3899 Can two people have the same email address and password on their phone?

Can two people have the same email address and password on their phone?

I guess so.    But the email content will mirror on both phones.
If you are talking about your Apple ID and iCloud email, yes, it is possible, but again the phones will mirror.   You should not have the same Apple ID and iCloud both.
    Why?
If you explain the reason for the question we may have a solution that works for you.

  • Can two people share the same Apple ID on two different iPhones and maintain different passwords?  Yes, there is more to the story.

I have an iMac, and iPhone.  I've had my Apple ID for a few years.
My wife got an iPhone 4S a few months back and the salesperson at Verizon set her Apple ID the same as mine, but gave her a different password.  I don't know if this was ok, but that is what happened.
So, yesterday, we both upgraded to IOS6 and I had no problem logging in to my iPhone with my Apple ID.  When my wife went to log in, she was told that she was entering the wrong password. We entered the password over and over again and still was wrong.
The question is... can two people share the same Apple ID on two different iPhones and maintain different passwords?  (I have the feeling her iPhone is thinking that since it's my Apple ID, it wants my password.)
If not, can I still set up a new Apple ID for her even through she's had the iPhone for a few months?
    Thanks.

    Hi
You shold follow your feelings, its probably right most of the time.
You can have 5 different devices hucked upp to one Apple ID. What I have done is that my wife and I have one Apple ID, when I bye a new app on my phone, She gets it to. Thats nice.
You can allways set upp a new Apple ID for your wife.

  • HT2736 Can I gift a song to two people at the same time so I only have to go through the process once?

As the subject says can I gift a song to two people at the same time so I only have to go through the process once? For example can I enter two seperate email addresses in the "To" line seperated by a semicolon like I can in Outlook?
    Thanks for the help

Is there any way I can be on both of these networks at the same time or is there some other way I can configure this?
Yes, you can reconfigure the Time Capsule (TC) to "Join a wireless network." In this case the wireless network would be the one created by the other wireless Internet router. In this configuration, the TC can still share its internal (and external) hard drive and a printer attached to the USB port. However, note that this would disable the TC as a router and an Ethernet switch so basically it will perform as a wireless client.

  • Book file & Dropbox: Multiple people working on same book file

I am trying to use the book file and have run into multiple issues. We have saved the book file and all relevant InDesign files on dropbox. There are two of us who work on the book file at the same time. We have the book file open together but work on different files from the book, never working on the same file at the same time.
A few of the issues we have run into are as follows:
    1. The book file does not show the InDesign files the other person added, when opening on a different computer.
    2. When saving the book file, from the panel, it will tell us someone else saved the file and if we want to overwrite their file.
    3. When working on of the files from the book and I try to save the file (ctrl+s) I get error messages telling me the network connection was modified by another process. InDesign then has en error message it needs to shut down and start back up to recover documents. After it starts back up it can't recover document due to error(11).
Has anyone used the bookfile with a cloud service, while multiple people work on different files for the book? For example, we want one person to work on the files 1-5 and another on 6-10 for the book file at the same time.

Only one person can work on a book file at the same time.
You cannot work this way on the files.
Person A adds a file to the book
    Saves
Person B adds a file to the book
    Saves
Persons B version overwrites Person A file.
Consider giving 1 person the duty of updating the Book File.
Only 1 person can work on a file at the same time - consider splitting files you're working on into folders
    Folder>Person A
    Folder>Person B
Add files that person should be working on.
Person in charge of updating the book file will update from both folders.
The way you're working will not work.

  • Multiple people working on same iWeb domain.

I am trying to rebuild my site after upgrading to iWeb'08 and would love to be able to have multiple people work on different areas of the site to speed up the process. How do I sync them back without loosing links. Can I ever have them exist in one file again. I believe that I can manually publish to folder then put them all in same folder.
If there is any advice you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.

    Advice?
    Don't try it.
You would need multiple versions of the Domain.sites folder created by iWeb and there is no way to merge them into just one file.

  • Two people gave the same bad advice and it's costing me $300+

So I have phone on my plan that was stolen and I want to have it removed from the plan. I call Verizon and am told that if I get a tablet, it can replace the phone and I won't be charged the early termination fee. Sounds good, right? So I get the ipad and it's added to my plan. I call last week to have the replacement done and the rep says everything is cool. The deletion/switch has been done. Well, I go online to check to make sure and the phone is still on there. I call Verizon Wireless and am first told sure it can be done and then after being on hold for a while, am told it can't happen because I bought the ipad on the Edge program and that it was going to cost me $300 to remove the line that wasn't being used. When I mentioned that two people had told me it could be done (with no mention of Edge) the rep had nothing to say - - no sorry for the misunderstanding - - nothing. So I'm stuck with an ipad I don't necessarily need and the fee that I was told by two people I wouldn't be charged.
****** doesn't begin to describe how I'm feeling.

It's not that I have a problem with the ipad. That is fine. The problem for me is that I was told that I could replace an iphone 4 with the ipad and not be charged the service fee (keep in mind from two verizon reps). Now it looks like I will be $300 for a phone that costs me 99 cents because I was given misinformation. And what really ****** me off is that the rep I talked to this morning first told me that someone was making the change and then came back and said it couldn't be done. He never apologized for the miscommunication or anything. I did ask that the line be taken off and the $300 added to my bill. I'm going to check again tomorrow and if it's not been done I will move every bit of my business to another carrier who has agreed to pay any early termination and transfer charges. More than anything, I am really disappointed with the customer service. In addition to cell service, I have home phone, cable and internet with Verizon and this has really made me rethink continuing my busines with you.

  • Two people working on the same IWeb-page and still keep our own work saved.

Hi! I work together with a girlfriend buliding webpages in IWeb. Is it possible for us to exchange work when both of us is edithing the same webpage - and both of us have other pages one our own that we rader not share/update/change/edit/overwrite/delete,...?

Yes. Are you referring to pages in the same site or separate sites?
For separate sites the shared site would need to be it in its own domain.site2 file. Then follow the directions in this MacWorld online article: Managing an iWeb site from multiple Macs
The important caveat to this is that both of you cannot work on the site at the same time and plenty of time must pass between one of you finishing their work and the other starting up. It's just the nature of the beast. Otherwise you would have to pass the domain.sites2 file/package back and forth between your two Macs.
If your two Macs are connected together on the same LAN you could place the domain file on an external HD attached to one of the Macs so both would have access to the same file. Again, both of you could not work on the site at the same time.
The other sites would then be in a separate domain file.
If you're referring to pages in the same site it can be done by having the jointly managed pages in one site and your pages in a separate site and her pages in a separate site.
Then in the joint site add blank pages representing your pages and her pages. In each blank page put the following code in an HTML snippet:
    <script type="text/javascript">
parent.window.location = "URL TO PAGE ON SITE YOU WANT TO REDIRECT TO"; </script>
Thanks to Cyclosaurus for this code
On each of your sites you would add blank pages representing the joint page and each other pages with the same redirect code.
Now you can edit and change your pages at any time, publish as she can also with her pages. For the joint pages you will have to use one of the methods I described above for separate site.
See this demo page for more about the Redirect method: Redirect.

  • Lightroom Faces: Two People with the Same Name

I downloaded Lightroom CC last night and came up with the following question:
I have an uncle and a cousin with the same name...can Lightroom create two different "people" or will I need to name them each differently? I'm guessing it's the latter but figured I'd pose the question in case there is an alternate solution.

    johnrellis schreef:
You might have a keyword for each family grouping, e.g. "John Ellis Family" and "Steve Ellis Family", and then place the keywords for the members of each under those parents.  E.g. under "John Ellis Family" you'd have "John Ellis", "Mary Ellis", "Jane Ellis", etc.   And under "Steve Ellis Family", you might have "Steve Ellis", "Kathryn Ellis", and "John Ellis" (a different John Ellis).
It's a good idea to work with hierarchies. But for the face option to work, you will have to have two unique names.
I just did a quick test.
I have some images of twins in my catalogue, Tom and Boris.
Under them, I created a "name" Twin. Because of the hierarchy, I can apply Boris>Twin to one image, Tom>Twin to another and both of them to a third photo.
So I drag a name box around them and type "Twin". The drop down (auto fill) lets me choose between two identical looking entries called "twin". No way of knowing which one to pick. And maybe you've noticed that the auto fill drop down list starts with entries you used recently. So no good remembering that the top "Twin" will always be "Boris" for example.
The count of used keywords only goes up for one of them if I happen to use the same entry twice.
The only way for this to work (as far as I can tell now) is to drag the appropriate "Twin" from the keywordlist onto the right face in the People view (O).
I work with hierarchies, but I make sure I have unique names.
Also, I don't use spaces in the names, but rather JohnEllis, SteveEllis, etc. That way, if I have a very long list with Ellis members and also a lot of people called John or Steve, it's much easier to narrow the search for a particular person (like in smart collections).
Opening the properties for the keyword, I make sure that "include on export" is NOT on, so you won't see that strange looking name Number123JohnEllis in your exported image.
I have "export containing keywords" and "export synonyms" (and now with LR CC of course "Person") checked. As a synonym, you can put "John, Ellis, John Ellis, Steve Ellis family" and all of these will export.
    Hope this makes sense.
Like John suggests, if you already create the Ellis Family>Steve Ellis Family>John Ellis>John>Numer123JohnEllis then you don't have to enter the synonyms, as long as you have "export containing keywords" on all of them checked, as well as "include on export" (except for the Number123JohnEllis keyword which shouldn't have "include on export" checked).
Working with hierarchies can really help you in your keywording. But it will take some time to set it up.

  • How can two people edit the same InDesign CC document?

I am looking for a desktop publishing application that I can use to create programs for a high school choir and am experimenting with InDesign CC.  I'll do most of the work creating the progam, but the choir teacher at the last moment will have changes for me or will do them herself.  Either way she will be producing the final copy for printing.
In an ideal world we would be able to edit the same file at the same time, me from my office and her from her classroom, not on a shared network, much like Google Docs.
Does InDesign CC have this capability?  What steps would I use to approach this problem using InDesign CC?

You can look into InCopy for text changes and put the InDesign file in a
    dropbox folder.
