Preventing iPhoto Library being a bundle

A question to the advanced power users:
Does anybody know how to prevent the iPhoto Library turning from a folder into a bundle each time after iPhoto has been used?
In other words: I want to keep the iPhoto Library as a plain folder.
As of now, after each use of iPhoto I have to turn off the bundle bit on iPhoto Library manually.
There's an old thread which provides a possible solution on Tiger: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1079557 . I didn't try yet to apply it on Mountain Lion though.
Oddly, turning off the bundle bit on the Photo Booth Library sticks – it remains a folder after the usage of Photo Booth.
iPhoto 9.2.3 (intentionally!) on OS X 10.8.4

Larry & Terence, thanks for taking your time to post here.
But:
No offense, but none of your answers was actually helpful in any way.
I was asking a clear – albeit unusual – question.
I'm not a programmer, but I am an adult, advanced power user with over 20 years of Mac experience, including Mac support. I know what I'm doing and I don't have a single reason having to justify why I want to be doing it the way I do.
So, if you don't have any constructive answer to my very question above apart from preaching of what I'm "supposed" or "not supposed" to do, please don't bother to reply.
Thanks for your understanding.
Anyway.
In the meantime I've checked out the aforementioned hint from https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1079557 .
With a couple of tweaks it actually works on Mountain Lion:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
          <key>Label</key>
          <string>com.apple.iphoto.removebundle</string>
          <key>ProgramArguments</key>
          <array>
                    <string>/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/usr/bin/SetFile</string>
                    <string>-a</string>
                    <string>b</string>
                    <string>/Users/YOUR_USER_NAME/Pictures/iPhoto Library</string>
          </array>
          <key>StartInterval</key>
          <integer>60</integer>
</dict>
</plist>
(The path to SetFile is different on Mountain Lion, because the Developer Tools are now bundled in the Xcode.app.)
Save e.g. as "com.apple.iphoto.removebundle.plist" into ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
You may need to log out and log in again in order to make it work.
It's nothing but a workaround, but it will do for the time being.
P.S. Kids, don't try this at home on your dad's beloved Mac…

  • Iphoto library being recognised as aperture library

Updated iPhoto to 9.6. after this library was able to be opened for a while and recently stopped opening.  Returned iPhoto to 9.5.1 which now has allowed me to open a blank library which was created perviously but I cannot still open my primary library.  Message comes up - see below -
I do not have Aperture on my computer and never have. Have tried opening the First Aid on the library but as it is not opening in iPhoto it will not open the first aid.

I have reverted iPhoto to 9.6. Or is it easier to have both on previous versions.
when you downgrade the MacOS X version as well, you will have to downgrade everything - all applications and all documents. A lot of work, that will lead you into a dead end for future updates. It is much more economic, to try to find out, why iPhoto 9.6 did not work.

  • Is the iPhoto Library Safe?

I currently have my iPhoto library and separate copies of the photos. As this is doubling up on everything, I was wondering how safe the iPhoto library actually is? Is total corruption possible and then if I didn't have separate files elsewhere all would be lost? What are your thoughts?

    You're welcome!
yes, the iPhoto Library is a bundled package, disguised as a single file. And iPhoto is maintaining the databases inside, that describe how the edited versions, originals, thumbnails are related.  Be very careful, when you access the files inside. Just look, don't modify.
Terence Devlin has written some very useful user tips, that describe the iPhoto Library:  See the links below:

  • Faster transfers of iPhoto library

So I bought an SSD for my MBP and am in the process of transferring everything to my new NAS from my existing hard drive.  Unfortunately, I found that my iPhoto library is about 225Gb large and after initiating the copy from the MBP to the NAS, it says it's gonna take 6 days...actually, make that 7 (it keeps going up).  I can't wait a week to move everything over...does anyone have a better idea to get this done quickly?
It might also help to note that I do have a Time Capsule with backups of everything, including my iPhoto library.  If there's a way to install the new drive, restore everything except the media files, then move it all to the NAS straight from the Time Capsule, that would be fantastic.  If that's not possible, I'd be happy with any way to speed up this process.  Thanks!

The iPhoto Library is a package that contains a large number of tiny files (reference files for faces, locations, albums, thumbnails, etc).  The Finder needs to sort out all this before it starts copying, and it overestimates the time required.   In my experience not much seems to happen during the first 10-15 minutes of the copy process except the estimated time keeps rising to a scary level; but once it actually starts copying things speed up.  It's still not as fast as a "normal" copy, I think the reason has something to do with the iPhoto Library being a package and the internal structure of the library.  The same slowness exists wtih iCal files, by the way.
There are some workarounds on the internet that people have used but they involve digging into the iPhoto LIbrary package and manually copying portions to a new folder on the destination drive, then renaming and some other stuff.  When you do that you risk corrupting the Library.  I wouldn't advise doing it.
Does the NAS have a USB, FW or eSATA port that you could use to attach it directly to your Mac for the copy process?  Copying via a direct connection will usually be faster than via your network, especially if you have FW800 or eSATA.   In my experience copying disk-to-disk via a gigabit network is about as fast as FW800 if you are only copying a few files and they aren't too big.  But as the number and size of the files rises, FW800 does a lot better.

  • IPhoto Library bundle structure

As you well know, in iPhoto 08, the iPhoto library turned into a Bundle.. that means at it looks like a huge file when in fact it's simply a folder with stuff inside.
Well.. I went onto creating a backup for my photos .. I used 2 double layer DVD's.
Today I opened the library bundle and saw a folder " iPod photo cache ". In my system this folder alone is 4gb in size!! And they're simple optimised copies of the pictures I already have in my library.
That's 4gb in a 14gb library.. it's quite a lot actually. And since the library is a folder; i can't really tell Backup to ignore the iPod Photo cache folder because It won't let me get into the bundle.
So what's the deal here? iPod photo caches should be where it belongs, in the Library Cache folder!!
Also, Apple should include an option to delete all the originals (when you modify a picture, iPhoto keeps the original so you have 2 copies for the same photo)... in 99% of the cases you won't need the original anymore. I should be able to decide when to purge those files .. or the library will keep getting bigger and bigger and full of "crap"

    Jose
The iPod photo cache is not the same as other cache files. If you have comments about where you would prefer it stored, tell the developers. They're not here. This is a User to User forum.

Version Control, the ability to revert to your original, is a core concept in iPhoto and hard wired into the application. In this iPhoto is adhering to the best principles of Digital Asset Management. It's just about the only consumer level photo organiser that has this feature.
Bluntly, if you don't want this feature then don't use iPhoto. Pretty much any image viewer with a few folders will do what you want. Plus there are other Photo organisers available. Search on MacUpdate. However, as above, let the developers know how you feel. They haven't changed things in six versions, but you never know...

  • Missing iPhoto library - replaced by MacFort with sparse bundle image

    Hello to everyone!
I am new to the community and to Apple in General! Got my new Macbook Air abouth a month ago and one the first thing I did was to transfer all my pictures to iPhoto (about 18k or 55Gb). I sorted them in Events, Albums, etc - all cool. Then, I decided to password protect my iPhoto library using MacFort. I guess thhis was a big mistake from my part as I didn't really understand how this software really worked...
Anyway, here's what I did step by step and what was the rather unpleasant outcome:
    1) Installed MacFort; found my iPhoto Library there and started encrypting it straight away
    2) Once the encrypting was finished, iPhoto started to request a password everytime it was launched - so far so good
    3) After the trial of MacFort expired I decided to uninstall the App. Stupid as I am, I did it with CleanApp and not using the uninstall option through MacFort
    4) When decided to launch iPhoto it couldnt find any libraries as if none really existed before .. :X
    5) I then restored MacFort as it was still in my Trash and tried to load the encrypted file.. Unfortunately the App doesn't find any files and I cannot decrypt the vault I had previously created for iPhoto...
    - even worse: it doesn't find iPhoto nor its library when scanning for files to encrypt
    - the only thing that MacFort recognises is the a vault which I can lock or unlock:
    6) I then did some searches and found out that all my pictures (about 50gb) are considered as 'Other' storage (i.e. the sparse bundle disk image) and I have nothing considered as photos in Iphoto
    7) Right then I found out that I approached the entire encrypting process in a very wrong way. I did not create a copy of my iPhoto library and then encrypt it but insted I worked directly on my original iPhoto library file.
Now I have a single file called Valentin.sparsebundle that contains my entire iPhoto library. I thought I had lost everything when mis-uninstalling MacFort but I can still access my photos when selecting the sparse bundle file when iPhoto asks to 'Choose Library'
So my question now is: Is there a way I can change this Sparse Image and return my original iPhoto library in order then to unistall MacFort and delete any encrypted disk images? In other words, put back everything the way it was before installing MacFort?
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give you as much detail as possible. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Many thanks,
    Valentin

Not sure how I can do this.
So I can see the image file is located in Users->MacFort (again no storage allocated to Iphoto...) :
    The file itself:
I can open my entire library and as you can see all of my pictures/events/albums are visible under Media in the open file command:
However in the Pictures folder there is barely anything:
I think the second file (45bytes) is only an alias(shortcut) to the sparsebundle image.
So in fact I can access my iPhoto library but it doesn't really exist :/

  • Corrupted iPhoto Library prevents Spotlight searches.

    Hello everyone,
After upgrading to iPhoto 6 from version 5 I found that Spotlight now fails to show iPhoto results. I've tried all the usual tricks, assiging dummy keywords and reindexing Spotlight, each attempt to get things working again has failed.
After creating a new iPhoto Library I found that Spotlight would work correctly. This has led me to believe that my original library has somehow been corrupted.
Does anyone know a way to create a new library from the old without the need to rewrite all the titles and comments or perhaps have an idea how to repair the faulty one? - I have tried the rebuild options.
I have also tried using a backup I created before installing iLife 06 but this also fails.
    Any help is appreciated.
    PowerMac G5 1.6Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   4 gig RAM & NVidia 6800 Ultra

To Lori and Toad, Thanks for your quick replies. I guess I'll give an example to help clear up what is happening. Something might be just corrupted or a bug in iPhoto but here goes.
I am a dentist, I have hundreds of photos in Albums in iPhoto. Each album has a name. Within each album are folder more specific to the patient.
    e.g.
    Album: Marlene
Folders: Pre-op smile views, Post-surgical views, Post-op Smile Views (of course all these photos were taken on different days, time, blah blah.
Photos: all have Titles such as Smile Left side, Smile right side, etc.
Keywords: photos are keyworded such as "Cosmetic case" "Implant Case"
Now if I want to quickly find Marlene's photos, I'd like to use Spotlilght. But when I type in "Marlene" I get a list of Folders that say "Marlene" that all look the same. I have to find the path: 1. iphoto original 2. iphoto data 3. iphoto modified 4. other folders named Marlene. (this is a pain of course).
What I expect to see (and used to see in previous iPhoto) was a list of Images related to Marlene. I see no list of Images at all.
But now let's say I pick #3 iPhoto modified folder in Spotlight. I double-click on it and up pops iPhoto but not Marlenes photos, what shows up is iPhoto window opened to my entire library as if I'm happy to scroll down through my photos to find Marlenes.
However, since the photos are titled, if I type in the actual title of Marlene's photo, then I DO get a list of Images in Spotlight. But my problem is that with hundreds of photos titled "Smile Left" "Pre-surgical view" etc., I have to hunt through all of these photos to try to find Marlenes. This simply does not work. The point of spotlight is that I should be able to type "Marlene" and up comes her images in iPhoto and I can pick the one I want.
I tried typing in the Comments in Spotlight related to Marlene and I've tried typing in the Keywords in Spotlight and I get "no results found".
Longwinded and hopefully not confusing, but this is just exactly what I have just finished going through and it is the same for all of my patient's photos in iPhoto.
My feelings are that something in the iPhoto Library new structure is messing things up.
If I place Marlene's photos organized in a regular Finder folder, then Spotlight finds it right away, no problem, but of course opens them up in Preview which is not the purpose for having them in iPhoto. So I feel comfortable with using Spotlight, but it is just not working with iPhoto at all.
    Thanks for listening,
    Charlie

  • How to prevent jumbled "Events" when copying iPhoto Library

iMac 24" 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    OsX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
    iPhoto 11 (9.2.3)
When I copied my iPhoto 11 Library to a backup drive (original drive took a lightning strike and is limping through it's last hours of life) the copy opens with events that don't display key photos, even after redesignating the key photo. Any ideas?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I recently created a new iPhoto library, why does it now show 2 iPhoto libraries the same and 1 being my new one when I hold option and open iPhoto at the same time?

I recently created a new iphoto library. It seems now that when I hold down the option key and open iphoto  I now have 2 iphoto libraries (both the same library) as well as my new library which is now my default as I intended but why would I now have 2 listed the same in this box? When I go to finder>pictures there is only the 2!! I hope I am making sense!

Try the following to see if you can get rid of the ghost:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Failure to recognize iPhoto library and failure to import same images

Okay so this one is strange. For some time now every time I open iPhoto is has had to rebuild itself. I took this as a bug and let it do it each time.
Now with Photos being on my machine I saw this as an opportunity to see if it fixed the issue with the new app. I opened Photos and asked it to select the MASSIVE iPhoto library I use. It said it can not open that one and failed after several times trying it.
I then took the step of exporting over 10k images and videos into a folder on one of my drives and then reviewing everything within the files to ensure no bad data or 0k files or anything. All looks good. I can however over and open each random file I tested and it looks okay. So the integrity of the images and videos seem okay to me.
I then also reset the permissions on ALL the files to 777 and the folder to ensure that the system could do anything it wants with them.
From here I tried to import them into Photos and instead of the 10,219 I am supposed to see it only imported a little over 3k and then said that the rest were not readable due to bad (or missing) meta data. I downloaded a meta data editor and tried to batch edit something like the date updated or date created to see if re-setting it with batch may update the meta data to a more modern format and allow for importing. That also did not work.
So here I am with no way to get all my content into Photos and not help I can find anywhere online to work around this.
I am almost tempted to run and PS script to open, process and save each file to get it to reset the information for each image. This seems like an extreme step but I am at a loss as to what to do other than have the system see them as totally new files.
This is also NOT ideal as I will loose any meta data I did have like date creation and I will have 10k files that all think they were made today. Manually sorting everything again into albums is also not very exciting to me but without being able to direct open or import the iPhoto library I am not clear what else I can do.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for posting this because it explains a lot to me as a troubleshooter trying to help other people. No one should be using the guest network feature for their own devices. By default, most routers prevent devices on the guest network from accessing devices on the main network for security reasons. Some routers let you disable that security feature but it's a bad idea if you are letting other people use your guest network.
Furthermore, everyone should have WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) disabled in their router if their router supports the "external registrar" authentication method. That's the method where you enter an 8-digit code which is printed on the bottom (or side) of the router into a device you want to add to your network. You can read more about this here:
    http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/723755
To the best of my knowledge, Apple routers are not vulnerable to this exploit because they do not support "external registrar".
The major brand with the worst exposure to this problem is Linksys because WPS currently cannot be disabled in their consumer routers (at the time I'm writing this). The situation should begin to improve in March 2012 as Linksys starts to roll out firmware upgrades for certain models. Here's a link to the Linksys firmware release schedule:
