Preview monitor playback 'sticks' with certain types of footage.
Hi there, I wonder if anyone could help me with this problem.
I am going through a Apple certified FCP training book with a DVD of footage for video editing. I a have copied the footage onto my hard drive as recomended. However, some clips will not play back with any motion through my preview T.V, it just sticks and parks wherever your playhead was before the footage began or once stopped. You can watch it back fine in the canvas on FCP obviosly, but the preview monitor is sticking and not playing along with it?
The training footage is set correctly because it configures your FCP to match the settings that the author was using.
My settings seem fine for standard DV editing as I loaded up some of my old Mini DV quicktime footage and it runs in FCP and through my T.V monitor in real time with the canvas/timeline. However I have DVCAM video footage to edit soon and when I also try to play it this also sticks on the preview T.V and doesn't follow the canvas until you stop playing and then it lands on the frame that i am parked on.
I imagine its my settings more than anything, I dont see how playing around with standard mini DV footage in the canvas is fine with the preview T.V and and not the DVCAM footage?
I am going out the mac via firewire into a Datavideo AD converter which in turn is going to the preview T.V via S-Video, with the audio phono into an amp. Like I say, works a treat with standard DV footage.
Thanks for your time and hope you can help me!

#8 External Monitor Viewing.
Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

Playback stuttering with certain types of animations
We are experiencing heavy stuttering or jerking attempting to play back certain types of animations. The problem persists with several codecs, regardless of pixel size or compression, both in the Quicktime player and within applications that rely upon quicktime for playback, such as Adobe After Effects 7. We have tested rendering out directly into quicktime format with different compressions, and rendering out many types of image sequences. The problem has occurred on both a G5 Dual 2 gig with 3.5 gb of ram (running quicktime 7.1.6), and an octocore with 4 gb of ram (running quicktime 7.1.3). Both machines are running OSX 10.4.9 system software. Another employee here made a DVD of this animation, compressing using apple products and using DVD Studio pro, and the jerkiness translated onto the DVD.
The jerkiness is completely random, always occurring in a different place, and not tied in any specific way to the motion. When viewed frame by frame the animation is completely smooth. The animation involves panning across a flat, large bitmapped image, so no frame rate or interlacing issues are involved. There is a lot of contrasting detail in the image, so a lot of information is being conveyed pixel to pixel. The stuttering has that look as if the hard drive is too slow, but as the problem persists even with 480x270 highly compressed quicktimes (i.e. sorenson) under 5 mb, hard drive speed should not be an issue.
Other quicktimes, that don't involve panning, seem to play fine.
There is no audio tied to these files.
The problem also persisted in Maya's FCheck application, which makes me unsure if it's quicktime, but for all I know FCheck also utilizes quicktime resources to work.
The video cards involved are the GE Force FX 5200 (G5) and the Quadro Effects 4500 (Octocore).
This problem is severe for us as we are unable to see what our designs actually look like, and we are at wits end trying to solve it. Not to mention how clients feel looking at jerky previews and their comfort level with that. Delivery is approaching an no solution is in site. Any help would be appreciated. You jest that someone would share with us the file in question. Shame and 100 noodle lashes for asking. I will get out the ouija board and 8-ball and try to make my own assumptions lacking any evidence at all.

DynamicStreamingResource and Error: Playback failed with certain media
I'm running into an issue with a DynamicStreamingResource wherein, with certain media, I receive a Playback failed error after about 20 seconds of playback. The error does not appear with these assets, which play back perfectly:
_dynamicStreamingResource = new DynamicStreamingResource("rtmp://cp67126.edgefcs.net/ondemand");
_dynamicStreamingResource.streamItems = Vector.<DynamicStreamingItem>(
[ new DynamicStreamingItem("mp4:mediapm/ovp/content/demo/video/elephants_dream/elephants_dream_ 768x428_24.0fps_408kbps.mp4", 408, 768, 428)
, new DynamicStreamingItem("mp4:mediapm/ovp/content/demo/video/elephants_dream/elephants_dream_ 768x428_24.0fps_608kbps.mp4", 608, 768, 428)
, new DynamicStreamingItem("mp4:mediapm/ovp/content/demo/video/elephants_dream/elephants_dream_ 1024x522_24.0fps_908kbps.mp4", 908, 1024, 522)
, new DynamicStreamingItem("mp4:mediapm/ovp/content/demo/video/elephants_dream/elephants_dream_ 1024x522_24.0fps_1308kbps.mp4", 1308, 1024, 522)
, new DynamicStreamingItem("mp4:mediapm/ovp/content/demo/video/elephants_dream/elephants_dream_ 1280x720_24.0fps_1708kbps.mp4", 1708, 1280, 720)
However this set of assets do not work:
_dynamicStreamingResource = new DynamicStreamingResource("rtmp://flashstream.adobe.com/ondemand");
_dynamicStreamingResource.streamItems = Vector.<DynamicStreamingItem>(
[ new DynamicStreamingItem("mp4:flash/m/mv1/acom/connectnow/flvs/acom014_854x480.flv", 408, 854, 480)
, new DynamicStreamingItem("mp4:flash/m/mv2/acom/connectnow/flvs/acom014_854x480.flv", 608, 854, 480)
, new DynamicStreamingItem("mp4:flash/m/mv3/acom/connectnow/flvs/acom014_854x480.flv", 908, 854, 480)
I've confirmed that each asset individually plays as desired, which they do.
Additionally, I have noticed that the buffer grows at an awkward rate - it jumps to about 10 seconds, stutters back and forth between 15 and 20, then stalls, and eventually jumps to 40 seconds, at which point the playhead, around 20 seconds, stalls and I receive the Playback failed error. This happens 100% of the time.
Any thoughts as to why the second set is problematic?
Thanks!I'm getting "NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound" when I try to play your first stream so I'm not able to investigate this. Here are some things to look at:
The bitrate you give to DynamicStreamingItem is very important. It must be accurate with regard to the encode. The switching rules use this value to throttle the connection between client and server to keep the buffer from growing too large. Make sure your encodes are CBR and not VBR (variable bitrate). Make sure all encodes have the same keyframe interval. Make sure you set your buffer to 8 seconds initially to get this working. You can adjust if you wish.
Also, turn logging on and start digging through the logs. Determine which stream playback is failing on. The next thing I would try is put the bitrate in the stream name and put them in the same location on the server rather than different paths for each bitrate.
Thanks,

This has been a little tricky to isolate, but I think I've nailed it. I have a number of PDFs that were OCR'd in Acrobat Pro XI. When I double-clicked them in the Finder, I found that Preview would crash almost immediately -- and certainly after I started scrolling down from the first page. However, friends to whom I sent the sample PDFs did not observe the crashes. I myself did not observe the crashes when I created a new user account and tried opening the PDFs from there, so I suspected some sort of corruption. However, after deleting the following files (following an earlier posting from you, Linc!):
Containers/com.apple.Preview
Group Containers/com.apple.Preview
Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist
Saved Application State/com.apple.Preview.savedState
and logging out and back in, I found that I could again view the PDFs without crashing Preview. But something was different: the thumbnails weren't displayed! So when I chose View > Thumbnails with the PDF open, Preview crashed again. Indeed, that was the condition sine qua non for the crash to occur (and the user has to start scrolling from the beginning of the file, i.e. the first thumbnails)
I should also add: if I try to have a Quick Look view of the pdf, it crashes the QL UI server, every time. -
Unable set session attribute with certain types.
Hello I was surprise that when I execute HttpSession.setAttribute("somekey", new HashMap()), "somekey" will not be stored in the Session. I can replace HashMap with HashSet and it's okay.
Out of curiosity, I create a Java class like below :
public class abc implements Serializable {
public String def = "def";
And I have the same issue with HashMap and it will not get stored in the Session attribute. Does anyone know what kind of valid object and what makes the object storable into the Session's attribute? Any inputs are appreciated. Thanks.
yienActually never mind. It have something to do with BEA's Portal Ad services. I will post this into the appropriate forum.

I purchased a per device CAL and was wondering about this because we have more than 5 devices. If one device is signed on and is using a licence then signs off does that licence become available for a new device then? Or am I stuck with the same 5 devices
even if they are not still signed on.When an RDS device CAL is issued it remains assigned to the device it was issues to until it expires. It cannot be used by another device until it expires.
An RDS per device cal is set to expire in a random inteval between 52 and 89 days. Once this interval expires, the device Cal is returned to the pool. You can revoke RDS CALs manually (up to 20% of your total) with Remote Desktop Licensing Manager. -
Video playback in preview monitors appears as a jagged mess
Video playback in the preview monitors appears as a jagged mess. The audio plays perfectly. I am using Premiere Pro CS4 4.2.1, only DV NTSC. I have checked all my settings, have found nothing that will fix this. What could be causing this problem?
More computer information might help... http://forums.adobe.com/message/4200840
Especially the exact brand/model of your graphics adapter (ATI or nVidia or ???) and the exact device driver number
IF you have an nVidia card...
Right click in any open area of the Windows desktop
Select NVIDIA Control Panel from the popup window
Select SYSTEM INFORMATION at the lower left corner
Driver version should be the 1st line in Details

Use iPad as Preview Monitor with DSLR (nikon)...possible?
Hi all
I have the idea to purchase the iPad but a still have a question...is it possible to us it as preview monitor for my dslr (nikon d300) using a cable input?
thx a lot
cheersThe closest thing I've seen to this is this app:
http://www.ononesoftware.com/products/dslr-camera-remote/
It supports only some models of camera, and requires the the camera be tethered to a laptop, to which you then connect wirelessly from the iPad. I don't know if that would be useful to you, but it might be worth a look.
And while not a preview app, ShutterSnitch might be useful in your workflow.
As wireless camera systems become more common and functional, we may eventually see remote-control apps that can connect directly to the camera, not requiring an intervening laptop. This is already partially possible for photographers with a Leaf or a Mamiya digital back.

Audio preview playback comes with dropouts
When I preview my blu-ray project in Encore CS4 (4.0.1.48) the audio playback comes with dropouts every 5 to 10 seconds. Otherwise the playback is fine. The sound on the finished blu-ray disc / folder is fine as well - it's just a problem of the Encore preview function. It also doesn't matter if it's a mp3 (menu) or a wav (H.264 with PCM) file. I never had this problems in earlier projects with CS3. Any ideas?
PhilCould the onboard Realtek HD Audio be to weak?
If you have the latest drivers, this should not be an issue. I push my laptop with Realtek HD chip on some pretty intense Audio, mostly DD 5.1 SS, and have never had an issue. Same for my workstation with a full 5.1 Creative Live card. Never an issue. If you have not updated your audio driver in the last month, or two, you might want to do that. Even simple OS updates can kill audio drivers (and video drivers), and that's why they are released so very often.
I do have to say that I have never had a crash in Encore, and only one real error message in over 4 years, but I'm still using EnDVD 2.0, so maybe that does make a difference.
Other than the I/O, I cannot come up with a reason for the Audio to drop out. Most ASIO issues are play vs no-play and not related to performance.
I've forgotten - is your Audio source MPEG Audio? That can cause all sorts of problems. Just wondering.
Good luck, and sorry to not have any ideas for you,
Hunt -

Premiere CS5 - Project Monitor playback is jerky after resintall of operating system and CS5
PROBLEM: Premiere CS5 - Project Monitor playback is jerky
This had NOT been an issue prior to reinstalling the operating system and all software. I have read numerous articles on the forums and have tried everything I can find...with no results.
STEPS TAKEN TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM:
I have scoured the articles here http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?loc=en_us&term=choppy%20video&cat=support&pr oduct=premierepro and others at Cretive Cow
I have installed all updates for CS5 Master Collection, immediately following a fresh install of the operating system and SC5 Master Collection.
I have ensured that sequence settings match resolution and frame rates of footage - the problem persists.
I have tested by importing both standard def AVI files created from tape and high def SONY MP4 files - the problem persists.
I have ensured the latest Video drivers are installed (clean installation selected, so that the Windows default would be removed) - the problem persists.
I have tried the 3D settings in NVIDIA control panel | Program Settings tab... selected Adobe Premiere Pro from the drop down menu | and chaged 'Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration from the value of 'Multiple Display performance' to the value of 'single display performance'; although, I ran two monitors before using this latest NVIDIA video driver and I didn't experience this jerky footage issue - the problem persisted after affecting that change; so, I switched it back.
Since I have 96 GB of RAM, I don't use a pagefile. A zero MB page file is the same setting I had prior to rebuilding the C: Regardless of whether I have a pagefile or not, the problem persists.
I have tried creating a fresh user profile, where the user profile is created on the C: drive by default; and, where I left it there on C: to test for the jerky playback in a new PrPR project - the problem persists.
Regarding the C: (system drive) and why I reinstalled everything, it had become unstable and was locking up. I ran DISK ERROR CHECKING with the FIX parameter and the system was still locking up on me. Keep in mind that the System drive is a solid state drive. Anyhow, I had no choice but to dive in and reinstall everything. I wiped the system partition of the SSD using quick format and started installing the operating system. Now, I've read the CLAIM that this cuases performance issues; but, the only place I see issues is in the video monitor playback in PrPr. Everything else - Office applications...printing...browsing the Internet...works just fine, everything is responsive, whereas, I couldn't do ANYTHING with it before.

PREFACE:
OK, I am hoping that through this week-long Operating-System-and-Software-reinatalltion excerise of mine, I have revealed something that everyone -- whom have been cursing Adobe over -- can apply to their systems to resolve this jerky video problem within PremierePro CS5 (and quite possibly other versions, too).
If you've read my post above, you've seen all the steps I've taken to resolve the problem. I've read many posts, some of which have mentioned hardware upgrade / opitmization steps that one may take to enhance performance, and hopefully resolve the problem. I've read where people have taken these steps and have still experienced the problem...and then they curse Adobe. Fer-shame, fer-shame, fer-shame! (nod to Gomer Pyle).
In my case, I knew it wasn't an Adobe issue, as it had worked flawlessly before; and, it wouldn't require a hardware upgrade or reconfigureation, as my system is completely maxed out with two processors, a system drive and a hardware RAID5 array, a CUDA-suported nVIDIA 4800 FX card, and 96 GB of RAM. bla bla bla, puke...whatever. Bottom line is this:
It's not a software issue. It's not and Adobe issue; and Gawd no! It's NOT a PC vs. Mac issue! HA HA. The software had worked swimmingly well prior to the reinstallation / 'lobotomy' I perfomed on the system drive.
SOLUTION FOR ME:
Download and install the updated drivers for the motherboard. Mine is an Intel Workstation Board S5520SC. Intel has an INTEL DRIVER UPDATE UTILITY which automatically scaned my Intel system and identified drivers which needed updating. A very handy, time-saving tool!!! Here's the URL: http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect?iid=dc_iduu
The scan revealed two Intel drivers needing an update:
Intel Chipset
Wired Networking
and one non-intel driver:
Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-fi
I downloaded and installed these three drivers, rebooted, and tested PremierePro, and was extatic to find this resolved the problem.
If you have a motherboard from another manufacturer, then you may want to navigate over to their wibsite to locate chipset and other updated drivers for your motherboard.
ROOT CAUSE:
While Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate was able to install certain default drivers during the Operating System installation (keeping in mind that this was done on an Intel Solid State Drive that I formatted using Quick Format) these default chipset drivers apparently weren't current and were ultimately the root cuase of the jerky video playback within PremierePro CS5.

HD preview monitor hookup?
So if any of you followed my last question you'll know that I recently made the leap to HD and am now trying to sort everything out!
My question deals with an HD preview monitor. Right now I simply have the "Video Playback" settings set to Apple FireWire NTSC (720/480) which goes via FireWire to a miniDV deck, and then from there out (via RCA cable) to a 4:3 TV (preview monitor). This works great for me.
Now, I will want to have a similar set up for an HD preview monitor. I'm sure this is possible, but according some earlier topics that I searched in this forum it doesn't appear to be as easy as one might think.
Bottom line: can anyone recommend the proper equipment and signal flow? I just purchased a 32" Sony Bravia HD TV to use as the preview monitor and I figure I'll need a Blackmagic DeckLink type of card, but I'm at a loss from there.
Thanks very much!!
Eric PThere is no way to view HD via firewire, unless you shoot DVCPRO HD. Every other format requires a capture card.
Decklink Intensity Pro...or any of their line. Towers only
Matrox MXO2 Mini - Works with a laptop (must have Express34 slot) and MacPro towers.
AJA Kona line. More expensive, and tower only.
AJA IOHD or IO Express. Laptop or Tower.
Depends on budget. But for HDMI to an HDTV, the best bang for the buck is the Matrox MXO2 mini or the Decklink Intensity Pro.
The directions for both are included with both. Basically MACHINE>CARD>HDMI>TV.

Preview monitor not displaying properly
i just did a clean install of leopard, then did a clean install of FCS2, and then ran all the updates. a couple days later i try to run color (which worked on this machine when i had tiger)and the preview window is very funky and not usable. i have attached a screenshot. i tried restarting, tried other clips, tried other formats- but nothing seems to get the preview to actually display the video properly.
color did work on this exact setup before i upgraded the OS. I bought anew harddrive and installed everything from scratch. i have the ati x1900 as the main card with pcie lane width set to 16 as well as an ati hd 2600xt with the lane width set to 1x. i have a mac pro with 8 gigs of ram, 8 core x 3.0ghz.
working with prorez footage. no special hardware add ons at all. sent to color command in fcp kept causing a crash as soon as i tried to playback in color (and preview monitor still didn't work).
here is a link to a screeshot of what the monitor previews.

please help- i can't use color anymore.

Searching the forum can reveal your answers, if you use the search function.
However, a color profiler does nothing to help you with regard to consistent color when working with video. Again, you need to use a video input/output device (I sound like a blasted broken record with this) with a video display device capable of a daily setup, like a projector or a video crt or flat panel. Using computer monitors with Color is worthless. -
I have three monitors set up with my Premiere Pro editing system. Two for editing dual screen and the third is an external monitor for client viewing. I am using a NIVDIA graphics card.NIVDIA Quadro K4000. I have the video sent to the external monitor but the playback is choppy and not smooth. Any suggestions of settings to have a good playback for clients. Thanks
Without knowing anything about your system hardware (aside from the K4000), footage being used, sequence settings, etc., there are many possible reasons for choppy playback. However, assuming everything is up to par to handle the playback, my experience when sending the Premiere preview directly to a "computer" display connected to the graphics card is that it usually looks "acceptable" but is not always perfect, especially with 1080i sources. Since computer display cards output Progressive and not Interlaced video, and the timing is also typically off (60Hz versus proper 59.94), that viewing method is less than ideal.
I've gotten nice results using third-party hardware for output such as Matrox MXO2 Mini or Black Magic Design Intensity Pro. These will send a proper "video" signal out with correct timing and Rec. 709 HD colorspace via HDMI to your HD monitor, rather than relying on the "graphics" card to approximate such things. The Matrox also offers calibration when using a compatible display, and the units mentioned also offer video capture in addition to output monitoring, plus some hardware conversions/scaling options.
Thanks
