Preview's Funny Ideas of Image Display

I have a strange issue with Preview that I cannot find a setting or preference to define. I have migrated a large number of graphics from my old-and-busted Windows machine to my new-hotness MacBook Pro. Some of these are forum icons which are generally 100 pixels by 100 pixels, but in varying resolutions.
When I open a 100x100 icon that has 72 dpi, Preview displays it larger than its dimensions, causing it to look all pixelated and fuzzy. When I open the same icon that has 600 dpi, Preview shows it as a tiny little square. I can adjust the view with command-plus or command-minus, but this is imprecise and not the sort of behavior I expect (also, the zoomed images continue to look pixelated). I've tried telling Preview to show stuff in Actual Size (command-zero), but this seems to have no effect at all.
I would include a screen shot, but I don't know how: there doesn't seem to be an option to include one in the posting dialog. Is this some kind of weirdness introduced by the fact that these images were created on a Windows machine, or am I seeing communists where there are really only well-meaning education Ph.Ds?
(Incidentally, Growl displays a similar propensity: some people's icons from Twitter are sized normally while others are tiny even though their icons appear normal in Twitterific and in a Web browser.)

Glad to be of help.
Corruption of plist files seems to vary from user to user. I have not experienced a lot of problems with plist files but I have had a few occasions where moving the relevant plist to the desktop and then re-starting the application has resulted in fixing it. In your case if the problem occurs again with Preview then use the same procedure to solve it though the chances are that you may not experience any further problems.
Being a configuration file it gets read and updated each time the associated application is run so there is always activity which I suppose has the potential to result in an error.

  • Filter previews don't match regular image display

    I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure this out. I'm working on a new computer (MacBook Pro, running 10.5.5) and all my filter previews are more saturated than the image is "normally" in Photoshop. This is true for:
    - Tiffen DFX
    - Photoshop's built in "Spatter" filter (and other filters as well)
    - PictureCode NoiseNinja Pro
    - Mr. Retro Machine Wash 3
    I have another Mac (Dual-core G5 running 10.4.11) which does NOT exhibit this problem.
    As far as I can tell everything is the same between the two machines:
    - Color Settings: North America General Purpose 2 (synced via Bridge)
    - "Proof Colors" disabled
    - Same image on both machines
    - Same PHOTOSHOP on both machines (same copy installed on my home machine and laptop)
    - Both monitors (external on the MacBook Pro) calibrated using Monaco Optix XR.
    Any ideas what's going on?

    >Sorry, but that is plain BS
    Let's try to be a bit less flamey, shall we?
    >For starters, in order to use the laptop's keyboard, the external monitor has to be way too high, or the laptop/keyboard way too low, since the darned laptop screen gets in the way.
    True, but when using an external monitor (in the office) I also have my external keyboard and mouse. The laptop is on the left and behind, sitting on a riser so the bottoms of both screens are at the same level. External display is on the right. Both angled slightly inward towards me. The laptop overhangs the front of the riser (and the external keyboard) so the display is not too far away.
    >Secondly, your scheme underscores the futility of using a laptop and takes away any portability advantage you may have had.
    I don't see that. The screen IS profiled, just not as well as the external screen. It's plenty adequate for sorting/filtering shoots and preliminary editing, with more serious color correction, output sharpening, et. handled when back at the office.
    >Third, you won't be generating much income doing photography or Photoshop work on a lousy laptop screen "in the islands", or at least not for long. You may have earned your vacation, but the laptop sure isn't going to "pay for it". You may permanently lose some clients instead.
    I'll have to tell my clients that one. I'm sure they'll find it worth a chuckle. True the last trip was mostly spent coding and working in Flash, and the more critical Photoshop work I did needed a modest tweak once I got back to the good monitor, but it was pretty close and easy to fix. Technically I suppose working on a trip doesn't mean the trip is paying for itself, but rather than bleeding twice (traveling AND not working for a week) I'm only bleeding once. And I happen to enjoy work, so it's not a vacation killer.
    > I stand by my fundamental aversion to laptops.
    And I by my attraction to them.

  • PS CS5 Image Display Differs From Used ICC Profile In Win 7

    Hi,
    on my Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine, I just calibrated my Dell SP2309W monitor using an i1DisplayPro and basICColor 5, creating a ICC v2 profile (I am aware of the problems under Windows with ICC v4 profiles).
    It created the ICC profile and applied it to be used by Windows. I double checked under COLOR MANAGEMENT that the new ICC profile is being used. Although I can see that the new ICC is being used (desktop appearance changes), there are a few issues I am experiencing:
    (1.) Windows Photo Viewer
    The thumbnails in Windpows Explorer look fine (they DO use the new ICC profile), when I double click a jpeg and open the image it DOES NOT use the new ICC profile. When I click the PLAY SLIDESHOW button (starting the slideshow) in the opened image in Windows Photo Viewer, the images DO use the new ICC profile.
    (2.) Internet Browsers
    All current internet browser (Firefox, IE, Safari and Chrome) DO use the new ICC profile and display the image correctly.
    (3.) Photoshop CS 5
    When I open the same image - that Windows Photo Viewer does not correctly displays (according to the new ICC profile) - in Photoshop CS5, I get the same image display that Windows Photo Viewer gives me (when not thumbnail or not in slideshow mode) - it appears to be the sRGB display.
    My color settings in PS CS5 are: North America General Purpose 2 > sRGB IEC 61966-2.1.
    When I go to View > Proof Setup > Monitor RGB I get the image display using the new ICC profile.
    Why does the image look different in PS than my calibrated monitor should output ?
    I was under the impression (please correct me if I am wrong), that the sole purpose for calibrating my monitor was to get a uniform display across (ICC aware) applications. Even when one applies different color spaces to a document in PS, I thought the output on my calibrated screen done by the graphic card should always be according to my calibration and the settings in the ICC profile being used.
    What Am I doing wrong or what am I misunderstanding ?
    Any help or input is appreciated !
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    A note on monitor calibration: calibrating your monitor will not guarentee that every application will display color correctly, it's more of a step along the pipeline, and for the preview part of a color workflow it's the last step.  Here's how color translation follows for an ICC workflow when previewing to a monitor:
    Image Color Numbers > Document Tag or Workspace Profile > Monitor Profile
    For non-color managed applications, if the original document is or isn't tagged with a color profile it will be translated directly to the monitor profile anyway.  This is the equivalent in Photoshop of selecting "Monitor" in soft proofing.  Selecting monitor in softproofing will bypass the tagged or workspace profile to translate colors directly through the monitor profile.
    For most automatic color managed applications (like Firefox), the image will be translated through the tagged profile and then sent through the monitor profile.  If the image is untagged or the profile is unrecognized, the colors get sent directly to the monitor profile.
    For Photoshop, a tagged document will have its profile respected and then sent to the monitor.  An untagged document will be assigned the workspace profile, which acts like a temporary document profile, and then gets sent to the monitor.  This is often why users will notice Photoshop behaves differently from other applications.  It's usually a case of the workspace coming into play.  By default the workspace profile is set to sRGB.  You can change this in Edit > Color Settings.
    The purpose of the workspace is originally for printing workflows, as a way of keeping consistant color translations when dealing with both tagged and untagged documents.  For web output workflows it can be useful for viewing everything through sRGB, which is typical of the average monitor output (not so with newer wide-gamut monitors, another source of confusion...) combined with the fact that originally most web browsers were not color managed.  Hence viewing everything through sRGB is pretty close to what most monitors see and what untagged/unmanaged docs will look like.
    Monitor calibration is useful only because it brings your monitor output to a "known state".  In traditional workflows the monitor was always a middle-man, a preview device which was useful for getting an idea of what the printed output would look like before you print it.  Since print colorspaces are often smaller than display spaces, it's feasible and useful to narrow down the monitor/display space and calibrate it to a known state, so that even if it doesn't totally match the print, you'll get used to its differences/limitations and they'll be consistent so long as the calibration is maintained.
    For web output, your final output is often another user's computer monitor, which can have any form of behavior (most standard monitors are pretty close to sRGB, or use sRGB as an operating system workspace (default monitor profile).  Wide gamuts behave differently, but I'm not sure if there's a particular ICC space that they closely match, or if different wide-gamuts are even that close to each other in their display color spaces.
    Hope this helps!

  • Why won't raw images display as thumbnails in organiser?

    My raw images display only as the 'egg timer' icons in Organiser.  I can open them individually, edit and save as jpeg but cannot view them on the grid either before or after editing. This has only just started happening - two weeks ago all was well. It's such a nuisance not being able to scroll down my images in order to decide which ones to edit.
    Here's what I've tried:
    Uninstalled Elements 12 and reinstalled
    Checked for updates (all up to date)
    Updated thumbnails
    Usually what happens after my images are imported is that I see these icons and they gradually open to reveal my raw images.  Now they just stay with the timer icon and nothing more happens.
    Anyone help me before I tear out any more hair?  Thank you!

    If you can use the 'update thumbnail' successfully on individual files and open those files in ACR correctly chances are that you are facing a computer power problem. Creating a thumbnail in the Organizer means opening the image to create a reduced version. For raw files, that means reading the raw file (32 GB each for my Fuji raws...), converting it using the last settings in the xmp sidecar files, then creating the reduced thumbnail. Several seconds, even with a decent  computer.
    To get an idea of your problem, it would be good to know the type and size of your raw files and your computer specs.
    Contrary to other viewing softwares which only show the embedded jpeg thumbnail in the raw file, the organizer shows a real preview.

  • Hi! I'm a Windows XP convert... switched to an imac about 4 months ago and am LOVIN' it  As a graphics designer I did use a feature on my Windows machine which I really miss on my mac... beaing able to see a preview of one of the images in a folder on top

    Hi! I'm a Windows XP convert... switched to an imac about 4 months ago and am LOVIN' it As a graphics designer I did use a feature on my Windows machine which I really miss on my mac... beaing able to see a preview of one of the images in a folder on top of the folder icon. In other words, in Windows, you can see the first image that is inside the folder as an icon on the folder itself. Is there a way to do this on the mac? Maybe some software program that will do it? Thanks for you help!

    It would be brilliant if Apple could make picture folders behave like events in iPhoto. You could see a photo on the folder, and also mouse over it to change pictures.
    But no, there's not an application I'm aware of that does this. You can manually make a picture the folder icon, but it's a tedious process.
    Unfortunately this is another example of how dated and worn out the Mac's interface is. The concept of using a file folder as the icon for a directory of images is so 80's. You could use coverflow, but that only helps once you're in the directory itself. Or use iPhoto or Aperture, although they just do photos. Or try Lyn as an alternative: it has a sort of iTunes-like interface, and makes it easy to organize photos without having to put them in iPhoto. And it can display photos that are already in Libraries.
    But you'd probably need a Finder alternative. I use Leap, which displays any type of document. It also does tagging, which is another huge omission in the Finder. More like Windows Explorer (although still no photo on folder icons).
    Another very stylish Finder alternative, especially useful for pictures, is FileBrowse. I don't know why it hasn't gotten more attention. It DOES put photo previews on the folders it shows. And allows one-click expansion to show the photo enlarged. It's super fast, and even allow you to group/sort by camera or flash! It really has to be seen to be appreciated. It works in Lion, although it doesn't seem to be have been updated lately. http://www.filebrowse.com/index.html

  • QuickView, Preview.. etc. Can't Display PSD files

    I've been having this problem for some time now - as far back as can remember with OS X.
    When I try to view a psd file, (prior to Lep) in Preview or Xee, all I get is the transparent Alpha Channel - ie usually a solid blank neutral gray or checker board white and gray.  And as of Leopard (and Snow Leo), this situation now includes Quickview.  I get no actual image, or sometimes part of an image displayed, but never the full image that is displayed in PS or PSE.
    The ONLY exceptions to this problem I have found is an ancient app called ACDSee v1.6.9 (2001) and Quicktime Player.  Both display psd files perfectly.
    The preferences to save Image Previews: Always Save, Icon, Full Size, Mac Thumbnail, Windows Thumbnail.
    Am I saving psd files wrong somehow so that the default system apps can not display psd files properly?
    BTW - this problem is completely consistent on EVERY system I have tried it on regardless of the OS X version (Tiger, Leo, Snow Leo) and Photoshop version (PSE 2, 4, 5, 6; PS 7, CS1, CS2).
    Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  This is a very irritating problem..
    TIA

    This isn't an issue or something you are doing incorrectly, PSD is an Adobe format that is not widely supported.  You need to open it within your Adobe application, such as Photoshop.

  • Multiple image displays

    Hi,
    I plugged 2 USB3.0 cameras in LabVIEW, and displayed the images from both in the front panel seperately. One image display corresponds to one camera source. When I run the codes, the display windows are supposed to show separate image grabbed by the corresonding camera. However, the displays windows sometimes show the same image source from one camera and they are not stable. I guess the signals from both cameras are mixed sometimes. I have no idea how to solve this problem.Has anyone met with the same problem before?
    Also, I'd like to confirm my calcultion of bandwidth. I want to plug 6 USB3.0 cameras in total eventually. They will all be set the same with resolution 1024x1280, mono8. The bandwidth of USB3.0 is 625 MB/s. Thus, the calculatin of maximum frame rate for each camera the setup could handle should be:
    maximum frame rate = 625M / (1280 x 1024 x 6) = 79.4 fps.  Is this right?
    Thanks,

    Dynamic image displays depending on yes / no value
    I´d like to have a image showing, depending on a specific value (y/n)
    ..sorry need some help.
    I can´t get it workin.....
    <img <?php $status="n";
    if ($status == "y") {

    } else {
      echo 'src="stecker_off.png" alt="no"';
    } ?> height="71" width="101" />
    The image ist not showing... ideas ?
    All I get ist some text showing:
      height="71" width="101" />
    MANY THANKS !!!!

    Presumably you mean this -
    http://mediaconsults.de/1test/steckertest.php
    And it's not clear what that is going to show me.  Looking at the code on the page -
    <html>
    <head>
    <title>Unbenanntes Dokument</title>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript">
    <!--
    function MM_reloadPage(init) {  //reloads the window if Nav4 resized
      if (init==true) with (navigator) {if ((appName=="Netscape")&&(parseInt(appVersion)==4)) {
        document.MM_pgW=innerWidth; document.MM_pgH=innerHeight; onresize=MM_reloadPage; }}
      else if (innerWidth!=document.MM_pgW || innerHeight!=document.MM_pgH) location.reload();
    MM_reloadPage(true);
    //-->
    </script>
    </head>
    <body background="test%20png.png">
    <div id="Layer1" style="position:absolute; left:1290px; top:246px; width:95px; height:112px; z-index:1"><img src="stecker_off.png" alt="no"height="101" width="71" /></div>
    </body>
    </html>
    I would advise you the following:
    1.  Put a valid and complete doctype on that page!
    2.  Get rid of the resize if NN4 javascript - it hasn't been needed for nearly a decade.
    3.  Fix your image code (note the missing space after "no"!
    4.  1290px is way too wide unless you want lots of people scrolling right to see things.

  • Problems with the images displaying incorrectly

    I have done a couple of installs before this of the new Apex 4 deployed on weblogic 10.3.3 with no problems but this one has "stuck a spanner in the works". I have also looked through the forums and was unable to find a solution to the problem I am seeing. I am about to start an SR if no one is able to help on the forums.
    This is my problem;
    I am able to view the individual images in the images directory via the http for e.g. http://hostname.domain:7001/apex/i/date.gif and this displays correctly.
    I am not able to view the http://hostname.domain:7001/apex/f?p=4550:1:2874725903020187 images as they are not displaying.
    In the troubleshooting section of the install guide it mentions;
    A.4 Images Displaying Incorrectly in Oracle Application Express
    If images in Oracle Application Express do not display correctly, you may have more than one definition of the /i/ alias. To address this issue:
    If possible, rename the first instance of /i/ to a different alias name.
    Alternatively, copy the images from the ORACLE_HOME\apex\images directory to the directory defined by the first /i/ alias.
    ** Firstly how do I "rename the first instance of /i/" (how do I find this out?)
    ** How do I "Alternatively, copy the images from the ORACLE_HOME\apex\images directory to the directory defined by the first /i/ alias".
    Thanks to all that reply.
    If any more detail is required please just ask.

    Hi,
    Url where you see image should be
    "http://hostname.domain:7001/i/date.gif"So /i/ should be in server root.
    Sorry , I'm not familiar Apex Listener and those servers you can use with it.
    It might good idea to post question to Apex Listener forum and give all details about server, database and Apex version

  • SSRS indicator image display problem!!

    Hello ALL;
    I am having problem with displaying indicator image in DEV report manager. but same rdl works in QA environment. Both server has SP1 installed. Any Idea? Appreciate for your help. Thanks,

    Hi Techchi,
    Based on the limited information, I cannot figure it out for this issue. As per my understanding, I think this issue can be caused by the browser that run the report manager. If you use IE explorer to render the report, I suggest that you can try to run
    it in compatibility mode. If you are using another browser, I recommend that you should use IE explorer to render the report to check the issue again.
    If this issue still exists, in order to solve the problem more efficiently, I need to clarify some information.
    Are all reports with indicator image cannot render well in DEV report manager? Or just this one report?
    What is the phenomenon about the indicator image display problem? Could you please post a screenshot about this?
    It is benefit for us to do further analysis. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Experiencing problem with image display in LR5

    I have an intermittent problem with images displaying and exporting in LR. It just began a couple of months ago and is totally random - will do it with RAW (CR2) or JPG. It displays this way in all modules - Library, Develop, Slideshow....The image displays fine in a non-Adobe image viewer (Faststone or Windows Viewer). I've reloaded LR5 and PSCC and is still persists. I know the image file is fine. It also has begun effecting older images that were showing up just fine a while ago. I just loaded about 200 images and maybe 3 or so have this viewing problem in LR & PS. Has anyone else experienced it and have a suggested fix? My graphics card has the latest drivers and shows no problems with other applications. Here is the same image - one a jpg export from Lighroom, the other a save as jpg from Faststone. HELP!

    This is almost always a hardware problem, causing corruption of the file. The difference you see between Lightroom and other software is that Lightroom is accessing the full RAW image, while the other software is trying to read the embedded JPG preview.
    To figure out exactly what hardware is the problem, you need to try different transmission paths and hardware ... different camera cards, different card readers or USB cables/USB ports, different hard disks, etc. Eventually you should be able to isolate the problem.

  • Tips for a better Looping image display?

    I have a rather simple and large (file size) image display
    here for a website in sacramento:
    www.norcaldesigns.com/cLandscapes
    the image loop is just one image that moves on the timeline
    and returns to frame one at the end. I would love some advice or
    links to examples of better ideas for looping image display.
    Thanks!
    -Jesse

    Assuming that this is a valid concept (sorry, as a user I
    find it quite annoying and dizzying after awhile), one of the
    approaches to speed it up in the beginning - split the image into
    several ones and load them one by one or in groups so that first
    few to show load, naturally, first. Then you will need to append
    them to the strip.
    It would be much more scalable to keep the reference to the
    images in an XML so that should you remove or add images -
    everything is done in the XML and you don't have to recompile every
    time.
    Also, I would set a higher frame rate (around 30fps) -
    animation looks a bit jerky.
    If the presentation of many images is important - perhaps
    another type of transition should be considered (not scrolling but,
    say, blending via alphas or something). In addition to the movement
    being dizzying, there is very little time to appreciate the
    images.

  • Indesign image display is very slow and jerky

    good morning
    I contacted Adobe Customer Service in Italy because I have big problems with the Creative Suite CS 5.5, in particular with Indesign and in general with the display of images of AI and Acrobat.
    As I work with Indesign image display is very slow and jerky. Even with AI and Acrobat work experience is not good, the images are jerky and there are hesitations in the fluidity of view.
    The software is installed on windows 7 64bit Utlimate, the workstation is very powerful: Supermicro motherboard, dual Xeon E5620 2.4ghz, 16gb ram, SSD OCZ vertex4, PNY Nvidia Quadro 4000.
    The customer service has sent me several tips for email, I have followed all the instructions but I did not get results. In conclusion, when I pointed out that reading on the forums I was not the only one who showed this problem and after discussing about my hardware configuration, they told me that the problem is probably due to the fact that I have two Xeon processors!
    In efects had observed that CS 5.5 on my notebook works better, but I never thought about having problems because the PC is powerful. I checked the CPU and GPU when using Indesign and I could see that uses a single CPU, and most "only 1 core"! But of CPUs in the system there are two for a total of 8 cores. Indesign seems to use only 1/8 of the available computing power ... In addition, practically does not use the GPU (only 10-15%).
    From the customer service was suggested to disable or remove a processor from the system. All this seems to me incredible. I use the workstation for applications that can take advantage of the power of the machine, should I remove the processor whenever I have to use CS 5.5? If things are this way I'm thinking of asking if Adobe buy me a PC with a single processor only for use with CS 5.5 ...
    Thank you.

    Interesting idea, I'll investigate in this direction, I should try to make a mirror of the ssd on a traditional hard drive, exchange them and see if the situation changes. It must, however, be a further factor in the eventual bad combination hardware ... on my laptop I have: windows 7 x64, intel core i7 processor, 16gb of ram, nvidia quadro 3000m, and .... a ssd ocz agility 3, but indesign is more responsive.
    But why indesign should be influenced by the hard-drive? With 16gb of ram and working files on NAS because in design interacts with the hard drive?
