Print Option Password Protected

I am trying to figure out how to password protect the print option on my machine.  I have a 7 year old who is print crazy.  He's goes through in catridges like water.  I previously had a password on the print function when running 10.6 and 10.7 but when I upgrade to 10.8 (ML) the password function disappeared.
I can't find the article online how I did it, but I seem to recall having to access in the Server version of the os to engage the password protection.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can control this via the CUPS web page. But first you will have to enable the page, because it is disabled by default.
So to enable it, open Terminal and paste the following line
sudo cupsctl WebInterface=yes
Then press Return. You will be prompted to enter your password. Type this in, noting that the display does not show what you are entering, and press Return.
Now open Safari and type
http://127.0.0.1:631/printers
Select the printer you want to control and from the new view, change from the Administration menu to Set Allowed Users. Then type the 7 year olds user name (short name) and tick the "Prevent these users from printing". Then press the Set Allowed Users button. A new window will appear stating the task is complete. You can now quit Safari and then log in to the other account to test. The printer should not be available for them to print to.

  • IPad to wireless printer with password protected pdf files?

I have a iPad 2 connected wirelessly to a HP Photosmart 6520. I usually have no problem printing a variety of file and docs....including pdf files. My friend sent me some password protected PDF files today. I have the password and can open them just fine....but I can't get them to print. It just ignores me (no error message). Any suggestions?

FYI, in case anyone is interested, I found out what is going on.
I created the original password protected PDF using Microsoft Word. I did this because I do not have a full version of Adobe Acrobat that allows me to create files.
On a hunch, I found someone that has a full version of Acrobat, and had them create a password protected PDF file. This file worked perfectly.
Apparently, Word is not strictly adhering to PDF guidelines, and OBIEE senses the differences, resulting in the file not opening properly.
Something to keep in mind for anyone linking to password protected PDF files in OBIEE.

  • Printing off password protected pdfs to then scan them in and OCR them.. a paperless method?

To circumvent password protection, I often print off, scan in, then OCR these PDFs to
give me a version I can highlight etc.
My question is this, is there a papeless method to achieve the same ends?
    A virtual hardcopy?

Any PDF that can be printed out can be scanned back in...
I am not looking to MODIFY content and then rediffuse it masquerading as the original, my aim is only to find keywords and highlight them visually generating a dataset of pages extracted from multiple PDFs where this word (or term) exists - this "condensate" is then reviewed by the reader (me) thus the desire to see where the words are!
Plagiarism is not my goal, distilling 12,000 pages of documents published online by UK government bodies is..... I am trying to understand where an assumed minimum length of a road surface treatment up to stoplines etc. comes from.
Please don't hesitate not to help me, I can see where you are coming from.

  • I can't open number files with password protection?

I am using OSX 10.9.4 with Numbers 3.2.2 (1878) and have one file which is password protected. While opening the file with Numbers, it prompts for the password after correct entry I receive the friendly message: "xxx" can't be opened.  That's it.
    Any solution out there?
    Thanks, Hansjoerg

Your observation seems to be right because it was not the first time I recognized this effect. However, it is bitter to see that professional SW like Numbers can't hangle this option (password protection) correctly. It might have to do with the fact that the data file from Numbers is actually not a single file but a container with lost of files an subdirectories. Why the **** they make it so complex?
Anyway, many thanks for your hint. I hope to find a tool which can correct those corrupted Number-files.

It seems that everyone asking this question have links from Grand Canyon University which will soon have over a 100,000 online students that all use ebooks that open just fine in Adobe Acrobat on their PCs BUT NOT on the mobile versions of Adobe Acrobat. Whatever allows this on PCs needs to be added to the mobile version soon.  We rely on our etextbooks that can ONLY be opened on the PC version of Acrobat.  That is ridiculous.  I can't believe with all the posts regarding password protected ebooks on this forum....that it hasn't been resolved.  No one can give you a link because the ebooks are on a website that needs a password.  We can save the books to our harddrives/dropbox...  I could send you a copy, but thats it.  Surely someone at Adobe knows what the hell is going on and can test the problem out themselves?

  • OSX server 10.6.7 password protect printer

    Hi,
I am new to MACs Open Directory (OD), I am trying to password protect the printers so that when students prints it will ask them to enter user name and password! but i tried that option and its saying add admin user name and password...so I created a user in work group manager and gave it full admin rights in server and in local apps and settings. so when a student tried to print and gets a pop up saying enter password the teacher tried to use the "printer" user i created in OD it says type admin id and password which is local admin and I do not want to give that id and password to teachers because it gets leaked ot their favorit students and from there every one knows the password! so is there any solution to this problem please help we have only 6 days till the school opens.

You may want to repost this in the Mac OS X Server v10.6 Snow Leopard forum.
That being said, you can admin your printers using the CUPS interface of your MAC: http://localhost:631. I have LION installed, so the following URL may not be correct, but the Manual specifies how you can set up printers for computer labs and require authentication, cover pages, etc: http://localhost:631/help/policies.html?TOPIC=Getting+Started&QUERY=. Should the link not work on your Mac, go to the CUPS interface (link above), click the Online Help tab, click on the Getting Started link, then click on Managing Operation Policies, then choose Operation Policy for a Lab.
I hope this put you on the right track.
    ~Mike

I have created a PDF and password protected it for view. However, when reading the PDF in Adobe Reader app on the iPad the commenting and annotation options are not available. Is there a way to allow commenting and annotation in the app while password protecting the document?

Is there a setting that needs to be set to allow the annotation features?  I set password protection to open and then password for editing and set it to Any except page extraction, but it still did not give the annotation option

  • Is there a way to password protect a photosmart printer so that others cannot use it?

Is there a way to password protect a PhotoSmart printer?

The core printing system (CUPS) can apply a print quota to a printer, such as 5 pages per day, but this limit would apply to all users - not just the kids.
There is an application called PaperCut that can control usage and there appears to be a free version for 5 users or less.

    Hi,
Solution: send files to HTC phone to print. iPad will always detect password protected and won't print, no crack. I don't know how HTC (or Android) can do this.

  • Password protecting a networked printer

Hello, here's the situation. My family has a networked printer (Brother 402cn) that's shared via a linksys 802.11g router with three computers (iMac G5, PB and Toshiba). The iMac is the main computer and I would like to password protect the printer so that one needs to input a password to be able to print from the iMac. How would I go about doing this?
    Thanks for your time,
    Eric
    PowerBook 12-inch 867   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Unless password protection is a feature built into the printer driver, which I assume is not the case and for which you should be talking to Brother anyway, the only reliable way to do this is to:
1 get a network operating system, such as AppleShareIP, OS X Server, Novell, or one of the Windows servers
2 install the NOS on one computer; note that ASIP is going to require a Mac capable of booting OS 9, OS X Server is going to require a Mac capable of booting OS X, and the Novell and Windows servers will require machines capable of booting Windows.
3 plug the printer directly into the computer running the NOS.
4 set up and configure the print server software in the NOS. In particular, enable the password provisions.
5 put the NOS onto the network.
This is a non-trivial task. It is also a non-cheap task. Normally network printers on small home networks are set up so that anyone can print to them at any time. I have a Brother laser on my home net; when I don't want anyone to print to it, I either remove the paper (it can't print if there's no paper to print to... ) or simply unplug the power.
May I ask why you need to password-protect the printer? Even though I have a server installed, I'd not go to all the trouble of setting up passwords for the printer. Things could get very sticky if She Who Must Be Obeyed ever found out that she was locked out of the printer...

  • I cannot print adobe pdf documents as it is password protected. I forgot my password. How do I fix this problem?

I cannot print adobe pdf documents. Password protected. How do I fix this problem?

You'll need to remember it or recreate the PDF from the original file.
If there were an easy way to get around that, passwords wouldn't be worth much.
