Printing to PDF adds extra characters in file extension (eg. .pdfg)

Hi.
I have no idea if this is the right forum for my question, but since pdf creation is -- in a way -- printing, I thought I'd start here.
When I create PDFs on my MBP (10.5.4) and send the document to my Windows-using colleagues, they cannot open the files since an extra character has been added to the file extension. This is incredibly frustrating, since I haven't managed to track down the problem.
Is this a problem with the system's in-built PDF-creation tools? Or is it Apple Mail that nefariously adds the unwanted character to the end of attached PDFs? Or might there be some other problem, somewhere?
On my mac, the PDFs look kosher, and my mac-using colleagues can open the files I send to them.
I would be very happy for anyone spreading some light on this subject.
Cheers,
Andreas

Yes, it is a problem with Mail when either the message subject or the pdf document (or any other document type) contain accented characters, I believe.
Until Apple fixes this (which worked in previous Leopard versions), I do not use accented characters when I want to send an attached document via Mail.

  • Convert PDF font ITCFranklinGothicStd-MdCd add extra characters with CR2008

My customer has several reports that are used the ITCFranklinGothicStd-MdCd font.
We've had some users tell us that their reports are showing extra characters - specifically, it inserts the letter "i" after every lower-case "f". For example, 'Ref.' becomes 'Refi' and 'For' becomes 'Fior' (there's no letter "i" inserted after the capital "F" - it only inserts after lower-case).
We've determined that the problem is due to the fact that we're using the ITCFranklinGothicStd-MdCd font; if we use a different font, it works fine. Also, if the end-user copies text from the generated PDF and pastes it into another document, it renders the correct spelling. So for example if they copy "Fior" out of the PDF and paste it into Notepad, it shows "For" as it normally should.
We cannot change the font, but we should solve the problem.
Use Crystal Report 2008 and Adobe Acrobat 9.
    How can I solve?

    Hi Ivan,
This seems like it's PDF issue. You said "So for example if they copy "Fior" out of the PDF and paste it into Notepad, it shows "For" as it normally should."
This suggests to me that PDF is having problem rendering that font.
Do they have a TTF version of that font?
What happens if you export to Word format, do you see it correctly?
You may want to post your question to Adobe's forum and possibly the the makers of the font also.
    Thank you
    Don

  • Print to pdf: Asks for name of file, but does not actually print a pdf file.

Printing to PDF:  When I have text in MS Word, or Notepad and I want to print it as a PDF file, when I attempt to do so.  The widget stating now printing foo.txt comes up  (in the printer spooler window foo.txt - Notepad is seen), then the save as insert filename hit "save" button ( foo.txt no longer in spooler window) and in notepad I get invalid handle.
If done in ms word.  same as above accept spooler shows foo.docx. and no invalid handle diagnostic.

    Hi kernwh,
I checked for the same but it only asks once for the file name.
Please upgrade Acrobat X to 10.1.12 and then check.

  • Printing to PDF - Acrobat Splits Into Multiple Files - ERROR

    Good Afternoon,
I have an excel document of 20 tabs... when I print preview the document, I have twenty pages, and it prints as one document (20 pages.)
When I print to PDF (selecting Adobe as my printer) the Save As dialogue box comes up, as it should. After saving the PDF, it only saves half the pages in the file and a SECOND dialogue box comes up. The result is two PDF documents, each with half my tabs.
I have looked all over excel to find a reason this is... why would Adobe want to split my document for me? It is really annoying to have to combine the PDFs after the fact. What can I do to resolve this?

Excel (not Acrobat) creates separate print job when worksheets in a book have different page setup option.
So check the page setup options for each sheet in the book and ensure they are the same.

  • Printing a PDF document within a postscript file

I know it is possible to print a PDF document from within a postscript file using Document Structuring Comments and Document Comment Extensions.  Is is possible to print a single page PDF document multiple times as a booklet?  For example I have a PDF document that is a page of graph paper.  I want to print this PDF file 8 times in the form of a booklet.  Is this possible and if it is how would I code the postscript to do this?
    Thank you  in advance
    David

Where do you know that “it is possible to print a PDF document from withint a PostScript file using Document Structuring Comments and Document Comment Extensions” from?
PDF is absolutely not part of the PostScript language itself. Nor is there anything in the DSC specifications that provides for printing a PDF document from within a PostScript file.
Attached to this posting are the two existing pieces of documentation of DSC from Adobe. Neither references such a capability.
DSC are simply “comments” within a PostScript program file which may be used by preprocessing software or external applications for various puposes, especially associated with prepress actions and placing of EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) in other graphic arts documents.
Conceivably some implementor of some PostScript product may have provided some capability to embed a PDF file or to invoke the printing of a PDF file from within a PostScript file using custom DSC. However, this is certainly not part of the official PostScript language. I have also attached those specifications as well!

  • Add Valid (not Default) File Extensions

I sometimes want to open source code files in Pages, but the file extensions are grayed out (eg foo.c, foo.cpp, foo.rb, foo.haml.html, foo.css). (I usually do this to print out nicely formatted code snippets for meetings)
Of course I could make Pages the default program to open such files, but I'd much prefer to leave 'vim' as the default! What I'd like is to not have to rename the 'foo.haml.html' files to 'foo.txt' in order to get Pages to admit that it can open them. In other words, to add a dozen additional plain-text file extensions to the ones that Pages is willing to treat as plain text.
    - Randy

If you change the extension name, you will just get an unusable file.
If I give trousers to my daughter I will not get a second son
    The only acceptable changes are:
replace .pages by .template to get … you win, you will get a template
replace .pages by .zip to be able to expand the packed file if the document was a flatFile one.
Only Pages may read Pages document.
I replaced .pages by .piges just for see.
I got the alert claiming that there is no defined application to open file with such extension.
I was able to use the Get Info path to teach Pages to open this document but I didn't. No need to store garbage in the launchServices database.

  • Importing MS Word into PDF adds extra page with document info

I am still evaluating Acrobat Pro, including Life Cycle Designer to create Forms, currently testing converting existing forms made in MS Word to PDF. There is someting that I do not know how to resolve is when I import files from MS Word, an extra page with details info about the document is copied as well. It contains info such as number of pages, author, date of creation etc....20 lines of info.
This becomes akward when inserting the document into an existing pdf...or just create a new form from the Word document....adds the extra page ..
Is there a setup somewhere that I could modify to not have the extra info? or how do I delete it? I try to select the text but cannot (within life cycle)
    Thank you

If you are importing into Designer, you should ask in that forum. If in Acrobat, then you might try printing the WORD document to a PDF first and importing the PDF. However, with Acrobat you will not get the form fields that you are preserving with Designer.

  • Word 2010 PDF adds "##B" characters to styleref fields

When I convert  a Word document containing the styleref field (to insert the current heading in the header), to Acrobat, it adds numbers and the letter "B" before the styleref. The headings appear as "13BExecutive Summary", "20BAccount Management", etc. Oddly, my coworker with the same software versions on her laptop does not get the characters added.
Is there a setting in Word that causes this? How do you fix it?
    Windows 7, Word 2010, Acrobat X 10.1.0.
    Thanks!
      --Barry

It is likely a setting you have. If you open the print menu in WORD and select the Adobe PDF printer, does the print preview look correct? If so, can you print it properly. I just tried it and the print preview showed all the way to the corners as designed and the PDF came up the same way. Are you actually printing or using PDF Maker? What version of Acrobat are you using?

  • Printing to PDF adds printer margins

I have an extremely frustrating problem. I have a large Word doc with a full bleed border. I need to convert it to PDF for printing, but when I try, I get "the footer/margins in Section X are outside the printable area of the page." If I hit "ok," the PDF is created with a white border all the way around (as if it were printed on a printer without bleed capabilities. This doesn't happen to me in Windows. I've looked at all the print settings and am at my wits end. I really don't want to have to re-edit the document in Windows (the formatting changes quite a bit, and it's a 200-pager). What do I have to do to get bleed edges in Acrobat?
FYI - I'm using Word for Mac 2008, Leopard OS X 10.5.2 and Acrobat Pro 8.1.2 (part of CS3)

  • Mail merge to PDF adds extra page

I am using Acrobat 9 Pro on an XP platform (sp2), doing a mail merge from a MS Word (2003) document and sending by email.  The resulting PDF document attached in the email includes an extra, blank page.  Anyone seen this before?
The original document is a certificate and includes a border around the full page.
    Thanks!

Since you are doing the mail merge from WORD, you can more simply just open the print menu and change the printer to the Adobe PDF printer. Then check the document to be sure there is only 1 page (There will probably be 2). Fix the page issue and do your mail merge. Changing the default printer is not required unless you are doing the conversion from outside WORD - changing in the print menu is adequate.

  • Cannot print to PDF - could not find resource file

Using Adobe Acrobat 8.1.4 Pro on Windows XP SP3
I've printed to the Adobe PDF printer a few week ago without problem
Now, when try to print, I get this:
Unable to find "Adobe PDF" resource files.
    c:\documents and settings\jsmith\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\[]
(the brackets are really a square box that shows up)
The box says:  Yes / No
If I click yes, it spends 15 minutes "installing" something and wants a reboot.  That does not fix the problem.
I've removed Adobe completely, rebooted.  Reinstalled Adobe, still same problem.
I do have a directory of:
\Settings where it is looking, but the directory is empty.
I can EXPORT to PDF just fine
I can open Firefox/IE and "print to" the Adobe PDF printer and that works fine.

    Thanks TSN.
(how to check if Ram is full )?
the memory is 8 G Ram. I only have office 365, Acrobat X1 pro, Gimp, and Inkscape installed. The problem was there before I installed the last two.
I posted on Microsoft as well and the response was that since I could print the document on regular printer without any issues, then it is an Adobe issue. Using the toolbar is pdfing the full document. That takes a very, very, long time besides at the end of it, many pages are blank in the pdf file and then it is a matter of restarting the computer, re-pdfing until I am tired. So I print the pages incrementally.  Any other way to pdf select pages without any problems?

  • Print to pdf -- add to iPhotos has suddenly failed - with no error message

It appears to work, the workflow at the left of the finder appears as usual, and iphoto opens, but nothing is imported.
It doesn't work from address book or from Preview. (I have always used address book in the past). I don't know when it stopped working, as I don't do it very often.
It still works on laptop (new, but running same OS).

    MaryArthur:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Another user just reported the same problem. First delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and try again. Also download and reapply the Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update.
Next open your text editor, type a few lines and run the workflow from there. Be sure you can see the workflow window that comes up asking you to name a new album for the files or select an existing one. It doesn't always come to the front of the other windows, only iPhoto's window. So while the workflow is running hide all the windows but iPhoto's.
If the above doesn't work, log into another account on your Mac and try from there. If you don't have another account it's a good thing to have as it's an excellent troubleshooting tool. Create a non-administrative account with no 3rd party enhancements. If the workflow works there your primary account is causing the problem. It might be another preference file other than iPhoto's. You can determine if that's the problem by the following:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard
1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - Make a duplicate copy of the Preferences A folder on the Desktop as a precautionary backup.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here.
6 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
