Printing to pdf file - only prints in thumbnail size

Using Adobe Reader ver 10 and it will only create pdf (print) in thumbnail size. How can it be configured to create in full size 81/2 x 11?  Using Scansoft Create to create pdf files from word 2007.  Could the the scansoft printer driver be the problem.  Using PDF CREATE ver 5.  Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

You need to ask in a ScanSoft forum. This is not an Adobe product and as already mentioned, Reader can not create a PDF. Also be aware this is the Acrobat forum, not the Reader forum.

  • Certain PDF files only print blank pages

I recently upgraded to Adobe Pro 9 Windows.  Everything was great until I received a couple pdf files by email this morning that I needed to print and sign.  All other pdf files on my computer print fine.  These two pdf files go to the printer but only print out blank pages.  Any thoughts?

My printer light blinks like it's receiving something, but then never prints.  The light stops blinking and the printer icon in the corner goes away like it thinks it printed.
I'm puzzled too.  I've never not been able to print a PDF file.  I've also never worked so hard to do so!  Frustrating to say the least.
Each page printed as an image (the only way it will print at all) takes about 2-3 minutes to print ... EACH PAGE.  Ugh.  A real time waster for sure.

  • PDF files only print as "images"

My computer recently crashed and I was forced to reset it to factory settings and reinstall all my programs and data.  I downloaded Acrobat Reader XI, but have been unable to print PDF documents other than as "images."  It now takes several minutes to download each page before it prints.  I have gone into the advanced settings and tried all kinds of options, the only one that seems to work is to print as an image.  Help!

  • Printer not selectable from drop down when printing any pdf file. Printer is available when printing any other file format.

Client is running Adobe Acrobat X. When trying to print their Ricoh printer can not be seen in the drop down menu. The Printer was added locally and the printer can print any other file format.

Your ps file should be good, the problem likely resides elswehere. Maybe in your acrobat install, distillers settings. what error did distiller give?
Mine ran good and got a multi page document, here is a screenshot to help you troubleshoot.
On mac go to system preferences / print and fax / and change your default printer if you have another option. I know sounds like this should not help, but there are problems like Illustrator for example not making .pdfs if you do not have a printer chosen or an old or corrupt .ppd assigned.

  • NEF files only show as thumbnail size in preview window

I am using PSE 8 with Bridge CS4 and camera RAW 5.5 on MAC OS X 10.5.8
I recently upgraded from a D80 to a D300s. when i import  RAW files into bridge from the 300s they only show up as thumbnail size in the preview window. It was fine with the D80 and JPEG's from the 300 show up large as well
    any thoughts?

In Bridge, select the affected raw file and click Tools>>Cache>>Purge Cache for folder.
If this does not work, you might want to increase the cache size in Bridge>>Preferences>>Cache.

  • PDF file VIEW & PRINT differences: Preview 4.2 & Acrobat 9.3

My original two-page OpenOffice document (.odt file extension) exported to PDF file format (.pdf file extension). I used Acrobat 9.3 to force the document to display both pages as continuous facing - so far, so good. I've found two issues - neither of which appear to be related to OpenOffice. The font used is Arial 10pt and larger (for headings and such).
    1) PRINTING: When printing the PDF file from Preview the document size and layout is printed identically when compared to the original ODT file - GOOD! BUT when printing the PDF file from Acrobat 9.3 the margin padding is increased by 0.25 inches on all four sides. YIKES! I was able to fix this problem by getting (i.e., remove the additional padding) by resetting Acrobat's "Page Scaling" option from the default value of "Fit to Printable Area" to "None".
The good news is that saving the file within Acrobat 9.3 with the updated "Page Scaling: None" setting seems to persist - but can I be sure the proper print dimensions are preserved when this PDF file is printed from a Windows platform? Does anyone know why Acrobat increases the margin padding like this?
    2) VIEW: I cannot get Preview.app to display the PDF file with continuous facing - only one page at a time is displayed even though View > PDF Display > Two Pages is selected!?! Acrobat 9.3 displays the document correctly with both pages. Any ideas why this may be and how to fix Preview to display both pages upon opening the document?
A minor sub-issue here is that Acrobat 9.3 on Mac OS X seems to use a display font that isn't truly Arial - the display of many characters' line weights are uneven and the document has decidedly Windows-ish look to it. Preview does a much better in displaying the document in true Arial. Fortunately, the true "Arial-ness" of the document in print format is not noticeable once the padding problem was resolved (see above).
I'm mostly concerned about the PRINT variance - I intend to publish/distribute this PDF document (a technical white paper) and many more like it to 1000's of clients but I have no control over which "VIEW" tool they use. Net/net: This unwanted 0.25 inch additional padding really does take away from the visual esthetics of the document - I've shown this variance to several people and we are in 100% agreement on this.
    TIA ---

Glad it helped; (for any nit-pickers out there I should have typed 8.2.2, sorry).

  • Problem printing Acrobat.pdf files get a VMerror error. Upgraded to Mac OS X10.10 Yosemite

I really need to be able to print Acrobat.pdf files and printer window indicates pdf is being sent to the printer. Printed a test page and Word documents but not Acrobat.pdf.
Test page indicated I have Driver Name: HP338_6PPD and Driver Version: 19.8.. I have had this printer for over 10 years and it has performed very well.  Other than I can't scan anymore it has never failed to print a document.  Does Adobe need to address this problem?

Welcome back to the community, @JAJ70
I read about the "VMerror" error you are seeing when attempting to print PDF files. Although this may be an issue with Adobe, I do have some links and suggestions for you to look into.
I would suggest a power reset:
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
I am unsure of which printer you have however, check for a firmware update:

    Repair disk permissions

    Thanks!

  • Why suddenly will Adobe not print a PDF file but will only save as .prn file I cannot print

Why suddenly will Adobe not print a PDF file but will only save as .prn file that my computer will not recognize?  This is a new problem never experienced before.  I have tried updating all versions of Adobe Reader but still no results.

Turn off the "print to file" option.

  • Cannot Print Full PDF File at a Time; only Page by Page

We have Adobe Reader 9 installed
It is being run on a Windows XP
User is able to open a pdf file and print to the printer without any problems ONE page at a time. Will not print full document in sequence.
We have several computers and I've not had this problem with all pdf files or from any one certain computer. Would it be the way the pdf file was created?

It could be a memory issue. The page could be too big.

  • Print to PDF - using Snow Leopard (Saving a PDF file when printing is not supported. Instead, choose

i have a PDF form that i created that is used as a custom proposal that my company sends out to potential clients. the form in its editable state is only used internally. we recently upgraded to snow leopard, but prior to the upgrade, we were able to fill the custom proposal form out using adobe reader, and, as you well know, we weren't able to save that edited document as a PDF with the custom form fields filled out. our work around using adobe reader was to print to a pdf using the adobe pdf printer in the printer dialog. with the addition of snow leopard, however, instead of choosing the adobe pdf printer, we were to choose PDF from the bottom left corner, then Save As PDF, and it would spit out an uneditable pdf that then allowed us to email it to the potential client without them being able to edit it as well as have an internal, digital copy for our records instead of having lots of paper floating around (i know this is also doable using security that disallows the client certain editing privileges, but printing to a pdf is much quicker and more efficient, and the pdf security isn't really that secure at its best).
in any case, i came across this gem of a post here on the support forums that installs another option from the PDF drop down on the bottom left of the print dialog menu that reads Save As Adobe PDF and is supposed to do exactly what i am trying to get it to do...print to a pdf file from adobe reader.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/509/cpsid_50981.html
once i updated to acrobat 9.2 (as the link above suggests 9.1), however, the Save As Adobe PDF does appear in the print dialog menu, but it still gives me the same error that acrobat 8 - 9 gave me while using Snow Leopard — Saving a PDF file when printing is not supported. Instead, choose File > Save — and as i've already explained, you can't save an edited pdf form in reader (as i am the only one in the office with acrobat) and still keep the fields as you've entered them in. the only work around is to print to a pdf but is apparently having some recent problems.
using acrobat, however, i know that i can save the editable pdf as a new file with the fields customized as i have left them, but it still saves it as an editable pdf and the print to a pdf option still remains the best option...that way we have digital copies internally that are uneditable that can be printed at any time or emailed to the client.
how can i do print to a pdf, based on what i've written above, using snow leopard and acrobat and reader?

A simple way is to flatten the form fields, which converts the field appearances to regular page contents. You can do this with JavaScript or PDF Optimizer (Advanced > PDF Optimizer > Discard Objects > Flatten form fields). A very nice script that adds a custom menu item can be found here: http://www.uvsar.com/projects/acrobat/flattener/

  • Degraded print in pdf files

When I save an article from the internet as a pdf file, the print on my saved file is degraded. The letters do not look solid. This makes the text difficult to read. This does not happen with files that I scan into a pdf file. The print looks the same (degraded) when the files are opened in Preview. I just wasted well over an hour online with Adobe tech support. The technician tried to convince me that the problem is the resolution on my computer but I'm using the native resolution and only the pdf files look strange.
Has this happened to anyone else and do you know how to fix it?

This seems to have solved it. Many thanks. After opening Preferences in Acrobat, I went to Page Display and changed the Custom resolution to 200 (it was at 110) as you suggested adn then changed Rendering from None to For Monitor. I couldn't find a setting specifically for saved documents.
By searching the internet, I finally found the online Help file for Acrobat Pro XI Preferences and was able to get other useful information. Adobe does not make it easy to get help.
It's hard to believe that the Adobe tech couldn't figure out that I just needed to increase the resolution of the pdf documents rather than insisting that I had to change the resolution of the Mac. He even went back to his "Concern Team" twice. Then he escalated the problem and will have a higher level of tech support call me back.
Well, PlotinusVeritas, I surely do thank you.

  • Saving a PDF file when printing is not supported.

    Hi Guys,
I upgrade from leopard to snow and now I don't have the possibility anymore to to print PDF as a PDF.
Before I was going to print and then choose save as a pdf and everything ok.
Now after the upgrade to snow every time that I am going to print a pdf from a pdf (acrobat 9 and X) I received this msg "Saving a PDF file when printing is not supported. Instead, choose File > Save "
Why that happened ? how can I fix it?
The thing is that I have a pdf form (contract) that I have to fill up and print it as a pdf.
Now I can't do that I can save only the form with the fields unlock.
thanks you in advance for your help.

Ah.. this is so annoying filled in a long form.. which doesn't allow saving.. I assumed as normal with this type of form I could print to PDF and at least get a electronic copy.. but no, I made the mistake of installing Adobe Reader.. and it has screwed up the print options.. when I try to save as PDF from the print menu I get the helpful suggestion
"Saving a PDF file when printing is not supported. Instead, choose File > Save."
When I do as suggested.. it helpfully tells me that it will only save a "blank form"..
Adobe has badly messed up their reader.. I now need to print out and then scan this document to get the electronic copy I need.. I will be uninstalling promptly after this fiasco..

  • Printing problems (PDF files-HP Color Laserjet 1518ni: return the printer?

Hi everyone, I recently switched platforms and became a Mac user and had to buy a new
printer because my old HP deskjet is not compatible with my computer. So, I bought an HP
Color Laser printer, supposedly Mac compatible, but every time I try to print a PDF file it only
prints the first page. And then stops printing. I spent hours with the HP customer service, reinstalled
the driver, changed configurations, but it still does the same thing. The customer service representative could not solve the problem. I was wondering if there is any one else who had a similar issue with printing? Is it Mac OS X 10.5.5 that causes the problem? I am about to return the laser printer; it would be so helpful if I got some feedback. If it is a printer issue, then, which printer would you folks recommend that is not too expensive but efficient (I use the printer a lot and need an efficient one) and a printing speed of around 12-20ppm that actually does work with the Mac?
    Thanks in advance!

Thank you for calling my attention to the Adobe issue. I did try and print a PDF file with Preview and it worked! How was the issue solved with Adobe 7? Maybe Adobe pro7 also similar bug issues; is it to Adobe that I should be reporting this or to Apple?
    Thanks again.
It's definitely an Adobe problem. The only solution I ever saw was either to print from Preview or to use later versions of Adobe Reader 8 or any version of Reader 9. I asked Adobe support what the problem was. I never got a reply.
You should know that Preview (and any other application which reads PDFs using Apple's PDF engine) has a problem with displaying Times Roman Italic, and only Times Roman Italic when launched under OS X 10.5.5. All other fonts appear to work normally; at least I haven't found one which has a problem, including other Times Roman font faces, including Times Roman Bold Italic. Preview seems to print properly, but the on-screen display has problems. The same files display properly with apps which don't use Apple's PDF engine, and also with apps which use Apple's PDF engine under versions of the OS earlier than 10.5.5, going back to at least 9.2.1. Apple is aware of the problem.
There seems to be at least two problems with the main PDF engines for OS X, Apple's and Adobe's.

  • How to print a pdf file from reader?

We have Reader X1 and cannot print a pdf file. Although it says 'print', it only allows us to save the file

Go to the Printer's properties and make sure that the "Print to File" box is not ticked.
