Proactive monitoring

Hi Expert,
I would like to implement a proactive monitoring system to keep check the end to end performance and service level agreement (SLA) for different network equipment and systems. For example, three web servers are in production environment (2 routers and 16 ethernet switches, 3 firewalls ... ect), I would like to ensure that the network delay within SLA (e.g. less than 10ms), the service availability of web server / network (e.g. 99.5%), .. etc
Any Cisco product (application) would offer above feature and function?
Anita

Hi Anita,
Checkout Solarwind IP SLA monitor:
http://www.solarwinds.com/products/ip-sla-monitoring/info.aspx
Also, OpenNMS is a great NMS which can do hell lot of thing from a single box, only downside is that it is open source and hence you might have to do a bit of R&D to make it customise as per your needs:

  • Best proactive monitoring tool

    HI,
Please advise the best network proactive monitoring tool, that can raise auto-alert tickets with Remedy software.
    Thanks

1 Spotlight works in about the same fashion as Grid Control/OEM, so you need a database to store metrics
2 Grid Control can also take care of Oracle patches, notifying you a patch has been released, and optionally install it, and even of O/S patches
3 Spotlight is a product of a third party, so it will always be less tightly integrated with Oracle
4 The Grid Control is interfaced by means of a browser, whereas Spotlight needs a fat client. If you want to have Spotlight on multiple systems, you have to buy it multiple times.

  • How to proactively monitor health of  the Disks on Sun Enterprise 450

We have been encountering frequent disk problems lately, most commonly disk read/write errors. I want to see if there was a way to monitor and anticipate problems in a proactive manner instead of reacting after the problem?
We have a Sun Enterprise 450 with 20 disks and run Solaris 8. I have a metastat script in the cron to check the status every hour. Can anyone advise me on an automated processes which can monitor and report health of our disks before anything goes wrong?
    Thanks in advance.

Perhaps it is a good idea to check the grown defect list from a disk.
You can check the list with the "format" command (defect / grown).
Some entries in this list are OK, but if its grown fast, you should
    consider to change the disk.

  • Proactive monitoring of failed processes

    Hi there,
We have a requirement to generate an alert in an external system when a process fails. I understand how to work with failures at an activity level using result handlers and I can execute a custom failure alert process in each activity, however, I would like to trigger this custom process at the process level, not the activity level as it is not feasible to configure the result handler for every single activity of every process. Is this sort of technique possible? Within CPO is there there some way of monitoring for failed processes?
Thanks in advance for any guidance!
    Dave

There is a "Process Failed" trigger that you can use to monitor for failed process instances.

  • Proactive monitoring scripts required

If possible, can you also share with me the scripts for pro active monitoring of the databases i.e
script to check the total free space of the databases
script to check the alert log file
script to see and ping me a message if the tablespace is less etc
Any scripts for both the unix and windows is required.

    hi,
Are you monitoring the DB with OEM? All you have asked for is in OEM.

  • What to monitor

we are moving monitoring software vendor and want to make sure we are covering what we need to monitor.
I've checked ML and these forums but not found a list to work with. We have something a consultant gave us a while back but would like to double check it.
Do oracle put out a basic what to monitor type document?
    Any tips and/or links appreciated

Well, there's a whole lot that will need to monitor. But are you asking about Proactive Monitoring or Reactive Monitoring?
For Proactive & Real Time Monitoring the Enterprise Manager is the BEST you can get.

  • BEST DB MONITORING TOOL

    hai every body ,
from your experience which is the best DB monitoring Tool ...?
my purpose is to watch the activities(insertion, deletion, updation on which tables?)  when an application is working...
or is there any other oracle supplied packages, which satisfies my purpose...?
    please specify to me...
    thanks in advance...
    john

    Hi John,
which is the best DB monitoring Tool ...?For proactive monitoring, you cannot beat STATSPACK, all free . . . .
For reactive monitoring, I like Quest Spotlight and Confio Ignite.
my purpose is to watch the activities(insertion, deletion, updation on which tables?) when an application is working...That not monitoring, that's auditing!
You can use LogMiner for free . . .
    Hope this helps . . .

You might want to be a bit more proactive: run dbv against the datafiles.so those views will always remain empty if im not using rman to backup my db ?If you do not believe me, you can always check the documentation.

  • Background Job execution enabled via pro-active monitoring

    Hi community,
We're interested in CPS Redwood to help us in proactive monitoring of background jobs (Ad Hoc and Periodic) and impacts in system performance.
The idea would be to have somehow a tool that monitor the number of available working process and system performance. When the system workload reaches a certain level, ex: 95%, this tool would intercept new jobs execution. After this, when the system workload goes down and the resources are free, the system would release all jobs to normal run again.
Is it possible via CPS Redwood?
Is there any other way to have something automatic like this?
    Thanks,
    Jose Antonio.

    Hi Jose,
This is possible indeed using CPS. CPS can monitor various load metrics of your system, then adapt the scheduling logic if thresholds are exceeded.
In your scenario, you would basically always intercept all jobs, but normally not enforce any limits so effectively that means all jobs still run immediately. If the load is too high, CPS would enforce a limit, so then jobs will be delayed until the load is lower again.
    Regards,
    Anton.

  • Monitoring VPN

Hi, we have several Site-to-Site VPN's and IPSec Tunnel for our sites and Remote users terminating on our PIX 515's and ASA. Is there a way to proactively monitor these tunnels so that troubleshooting can be expedited using SNMP, traps, etc
    Pls help.
    Rgds,
    Satya

    Check
    http://www.vpnttg.com/
Advantage   of VPNTTG over other SNMP based monitoring software’s is  following:   Other (commonly used) software’s are working with static OID  numbers,   i.e. whenever tunnel disconnects and reconnects, it gets  assigned a  new  OID number. This means that the historical data, gathered  on the   connection, is lost each time. However, VPNTTG works with VPN  peer’s  IP  address and it stores for each VPN tunnel historical  monitoring  data  into the SQL server and into the RRD (Round Robin  Database) file.

  • Tuxedo process IPC queue monitoring

    Hi
This question is aimed mostly at Oracle techies who have experience supporting Tuxedo sites.
We've been developing on Tuxedo for a couple of years now and are about to go live with a Tuxedo based transactional system.
Throughout the development and testing phase it has become pretty apparent to us that we need to be able to keep an eye on IPC request queues for processes running under Tuxedo.
For example, we have 10 instances of server "A" running within Tuxedo. As long as these ten instances can cope with the load, we are getting good end-to-end response times. When we overload the system whereby our requests start being queued up on IPC queues for these processes, quite predictably our end-to-end response times go up. We would like to get an early warning when situations like this occur.
Sometimes there are obvious reasons for this behaviour (i.e. we're sending more requests per seconds than our application can cope with) and at other times, it is a degradation in performance of a downstream process (e.g. database query taking longer and longer to return as time goes by) that is causing our requests to start backlogging. It is this latter scenario that we would like to be alerted to before our clients ring us up to tell us that our service is not performing as well as it should.
However, there seems to be a distinct lack of importance placed on server request queue monitoring within Tuxedo infrastructure and API set. Perhaps we are missing something obvious?
We would like to be able to have a more proactive monitoring and reporting facility in place to help us observe queuing behaviour. It seems that there are two ways to obtain any queuing diagnostics:
    1) Use a shell script to call tmadmin/pq from time to time to take snapshots or use OS commands to monitor IPC queues
    2) Use Tuxedo MIB and poll the queue OIDs to get queue depth snapshots.
We would like to be able to get a lot more than that. For example:
    * to be able to plot a graph of queue depths over a period of time
    * get alerted when queue depths cross a certain limit (trap vs poll)
    * work out how long an item spent on the queue before it got processed
So, are we placing too much emphasis on something that is not important to other Tuxedo users or is there a suite of tools one can use to obtain this sort of information that we are not aware of?
How important is request queuing to a typical Tuxedo site.
    Regards,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
You might want to look at the Oracle Tuxedo System and Application Monitor (TSAM). It is an add-on product from Oracle that provides system and application monitoring for Tuxedo applications. Although TSAM doesn't currently give you the kind of graph you are looking for, it does collect that information and place it in the TSAM monitoring database. TSAM provides the schema of the monitoring database, so creating whatever graphs you want should be pretty easy.
Specifically what I would look at though is TSAM's alert generating mechanism. Alert information can either be checked at the monitoring console, or it can be checked at the monitored nodes plug-in. The later offers the option of simply checking for an alert without having to report the data back to the console unless an alert is triggered. This tends to have much less impact on the monitored system and help keep the monitoring console from being flooded with data. In the Call Path and Service monitoring categories, you can define alerts that check if the number of queued messages exceed a certain amount. This is quite efficient and would have minimal impact on system performance, yet warn you when queues are starting to back up.
These two methods would give you historical data to look for trends as well as real time alerting to be notified that backups are occurring.
    Regards,
    Todd Little

  • BOXI service monitoring

    All,
I just wanted to get an idea from the experts here - which tool/application, in your experience, has done a good job in monitoring of Windows-based system services (BO XI R2 services to be specific)? I am looking for some open-source (or freeware) tool that can help me with monitoring for the status of all BO services, including Tomcat. Any alerting capabilities when services go down or are high on CPU/RAM utilization would be added bonus, but if not, basic service monitor would be okay as well.
Has anyone used any OTS or custom tools for this kind of systems administration on Windows-based BO servers?
    Regards,
    Sarang

    Sarang,
And to give you more choices ... there has been movement recently between BO and Tivoli to develop more proactive monitoring tools, which you can read about here: [http://labs.businessobjects.com/enterprise_monitoring/default.asp])
    Thanks,
    John
