[probably SOLVED] xmonad + gnome again

Hi folks!
After running 'plain' xmonad-darcs for a time i'd like to run gnome together with xmonad, so installed gnome today (haven't used it for years). gnome is up and running, but i can't get to get it run with xmonad as it's wm~
Of course i've tried to follow xmonad's wiki... I used other people's xmonad.hs, that basic one or that other one; additionally, xmonad-contrib-darcs v20081207-1 is installed. For completeness, I actually just use
-- xmonad.hs
import XMonad
import XMonad.Config.Gnome
main = xmonad gnomeConfig
It seems, that somehow xmonad can't be imported: a new created ~/.gnomerc makes no change, same with a copied  "export WINDOW_MANAGER=xmonad"  in ~/.profile (which is sourced by .xinitrc) or even in ~/.xinitrc itself. I added xmonad to the list of starting programs in gnome's session manager as well, I disabled nautilus and changed the position of the panel... Trying to start gnome with this:
export WINDOW_MANAGER=xmonad
exec gnome-session --purge-delay=3000
it says that --purge-delay is an invalid option (so i guess that is meant to work with an older version of gnome).
Then it comes up to gnome-session. But in my gnome there is no possibility to "select Metacity and change style to Trash"!? (Within the "sessions" I only can add starting programs or tell which applications to remember.)
Nevertheless, I can start an xterm and run "killall metacity; xmonad &"; then metacity disappears, windows are indeed tiling, but in the xterm there's the following output:
$ unknown ClientMessageEvent 269
unknown ClientMessageEvent 269
unknown ClientMessageEvent 269
unknown ClientMessageEvent 269
unknown ClientMessageEvent 269
and the system becomes almost unusable. After killing the xterm metactiy reappears.
I wonder how Phrodo_00 solved his problem, seemed to be trivial...
Any ideas?

Ugh!
Because starting x takes always 5-10 minutes I liked to speed it up. I thought it still could be gnome fighting against xmonad, since here xmonad is added as starting program while at the same time you have the "/usr/share/applications/xmonad.desktop" (see above). So I liked to  see what happens after deselecting xmoand as starting program in the sessions manager... But from now on gnome wouldn't  start at all anymore! Neither
gconftool-2 -s -t string /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager metacity
nor
rm -rf ~/.gnome* ~/.gconf*
helped (I don't have a ~/.gnome2/session)! X just hangs after showing its cursor, and there are heavy cooling but lesser disk activities -- so how to reactivate plain gnome??
But also suddenly another problem seem to arise (but for heavens sake, why~ there weren't any before...):
In the first time I crashed X that error was shown in the console:
(EE) intel(0): underrun on pipe B!
-- But how comes?, I disabled these in /etc/xorg.conf:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"
Option "AutoEnableDevices" "False"
EndSection
Now there's another one:
error setting MTRR (base = 0xe8000000, size = 0x08000000, type = 1) Invalid argument (22)
Disgusting~
Nevertheless running plain xmonad works... ((edit: after exchanging the xmonad.hs of course))

    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9414774#9414774
    The basic problem appears to be disk directory corruption. It is very unlikely reinstalling the OS will cure that since you also appear to want to preserve all your files. In fact, reinstalling the OS might create more damage to your files since the computer has lost track of some of them and might just overwrite them not knowing they are there.
    You either need to try to repair the directory using Diskwarrior (since DU apparently failed), or you need to wipe the drive (and all your files) then reinstall your OS. If doing the second option you should, of course, back up your data files first. However I can't help but feel when people mention backing up a damaged directory that your backups may be incomplete since, again, the computer has lost track of some parts of the files and may not make a complete copy. If I was in your situation, and could afford it, I'd go for getting a copy of Diskwarrior so you can actually repair your drive. If I couldn't afford it I would back up my data files, wipe the drive, then reinstall everything again from scratch, then copy the data files back on and keep my fingers crossed that none of them was part of the corruption.

  • Can't get Xmonad + Gnome 3 working

    I created the .desktop files just like it says in the wiki and running gnome in forced fallback mode
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GNOME#Xmonad
    After that I couldn't log in to my 'Xmonad Gnome' sessions because 'xmonad could not be found'
    So I ended up creating a /usr/share/applications/xmonad.desktop
    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Application
    Name=xmonad
    Exec=xmonad
    Icon=
    Terminal=false
    StartupNotify=false
    Categories=
    Now I can log in, but all that happens is this.
    Right after I log in I get a fullscreen black window, I'm guessing this is the gnome-panel. It has the red border around it so I know xmonad is running.
    But that closes right away and then all I have is the desktop. No window manager seems to be running because I can't open any windows or do anything.
    All I can do is kill Xorg from a tty.
    I've been trying to google this for the last hour but I can't seem to find anyone with a similar problem.
    I don't really know what I'm looking for, what log files I should be looking at for error messages and such.
    Don't see anything in 'Xorg.0.log' but I guess that is all a lot lower level.
    What to do?

  • [SOLVED] GDM/Gnome Issues after Updates

    hi everyone!
    ive run into some pesky problems (possibly nvidia related) after a full update this morning. after booting up, gdm tries to run, but it crashes and retries over and over again with this message (shown in systemctl status gdm while running):
    Failed to contact accountsservice. Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.Accounts: GDBus.Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.TimedOut: Activation of org.freedesktop.Accounts timed out
    i tried installing lxdm and lightdm (the former loaded, the latter didnt), but that also didnt seem to work. with lxdm i couldnt log in to gnome (screen just went black), with lightdm i had no luck at all (didnt start at all).
    can anyone point me in the right direction to debug this?
    thanks a lot!
    regards,
    M.
    Edit:
    i installed nouveau and lightdm again and checked the status with systemctl. seems polkit is looking for a file called libmozjs-17-0.so:

    so i reinstalled a package called js17, undid all my changes with lightdm, slim et al, reinstalled nvidia and it seems it works!

  • [SOLVED] Broken Gnome

    Hello,
    Everything was going well and I installed a few packages etc. After rebooting when I run gnome-session I get the following errors:
    Gtk-WARNING **:
    locale not supported by C library
    using the fallback 'C' locale
    Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
    When attempting to run x it gives this error:
    cannot execute /usr/bin/gdm
    After checking, this path doesn't exist.
    I have tried pacman -S gdm and it doesn't make any difference. That path still doesn't exist. Xorg was installed.
    How do I resolve this? I'm running Arch x64.
    Thanks.

    You probably have some .pacnew files in /etc that need to be merged.  You want to replace the current config files with the .pacnew ones (adding in all of your changes).  Also check for .pacsave files.  Those will have your changes, that you'll want to merge into the config files.
    Btw:  welcome to the Arch forums!
    OK,  I understand now.  I manually attempted to merge the changes from the pacnew files.  Didn't see any pacsave.  I'm sure there is a much better way of merging?  There is no difference after doing so.  Also I noticed when running gdm I get "The greeter application appears to be crashing.  Attempting to use a different one" , then it stays in a loop for 5 attempts.  I just hope I haven't done more damage by attempting to manually merge the changes using a pen and a scrap of paper lol.  I really do appreciate your help with this!  Thanks again.

  • [SOLVED] xmonad installation - confused (?)

    After recovering from a failed xmonad installation, I thought it would be a good idea to post this..
    Again, to everyone who helped with my other thread, I'm sorry if this is stupid.
    Every guide on installing xmonad is out of date. Or everyone that I have found anyway. I have already "sudo pacman -S xmonad" and installed it, but where do I go from here?
    I have tried putting "exec xmonad" in my xinitrc, but when I login, xmonad does not start. I get this in terminal when I try running "xmonad" in gnome:
    Error detected while loading xmonad configuration file: /home/skai/.xmonad/xmonad.hs
    xmonad.hs:5:18:
        Could not find module `XMonad.Actions.Warp':

    Please check the file for errors.

      Major opcode of failed request:  2 (X_ChangeWindowAttributes)
      Serial number of failed request:  7
      Current serial number in output stream:  8
    It says an error has been detected with my xmonad.hs. I just copied some random config in the hopes of getting this to work, so maybe that has something to do with it.
    After that it says xmonad-i386-linux: executeFile does not exist.. I don't know anything about that. Can anyone point me in the right direction with this?
    Edit ---------------------------------------~~~~
    I deserve at least one reply, no?
    I have seen this problem on forums everywhere, but people either get it fixed automagically they talk to someone on IRC and figure it out. I'm not a very lucky guy, and I don't know any IRC channels.
    All I'm really looking for is an installation/configure guide for xmonad, if anybody has one, please post.

    Dont use random configs found somewhere on the net. Start from the default one and extend it to your needs.
    Every guide on installing xmonad is out of date.
    A bit bold statement. I see nothing wrong with this one: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xmonad
    I suggest remove everything from your .xmonad dir and start over.
    Also, dont be impatient.

  • [SOLVED] xmonad + panel logging applets

    Until recently I used xmonad-log-applet, but after the last update, xmonad is unable to connect to dbus. I get the following error:
    xmonad-x86_64-linux: D-Bus Error (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply): Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
    As this is quite a generic message, google wasn't of much help. and I know practically nothing about dbus, so I do not to know where to start looking for the problem. As an alternative I also tried this, which seems to take a simpler approach. But when I try to load it into my (xfce) panel (via XfApplet) I get this message:
    An internal error occurred and the applet could not be loaded.
    which is also quite informative... Starting a "real" gnome panel also doesn't help. Here I have the suspicion of some missing dependencies, although the program compiles just fine.
    Does anyone have some clues?
    Last edited by davvil (2011-04-28 09:19:15)

    I deserve a big facepalm! For the gnome-socket-applet I didn't export the GNOME_SOCKET_APPLET_PORT variable, so the program didn't start. I should have RTFM in more detail. But the socket-applet works at my computer at home, but not on the one at work
    I will mark this topic as solved, as I can use the dbus solution at work and the socket solution at home, but I am still intrigued why the difference arises. If I find the time, I will try to port the gnome-socket-applet to a native xfce panel applet and hopefully it will be more stable.
    BTW I uploaded a PKGBUILD for gnome-socket-applet

  • [SOLVED] XMonad + Float + Spawn

    Im currently configuring my xmonad.hs, I have just spent an hour going through the XMonad API and contribs however I am still stuck
    Im trying to figure out if its possible to float a window that has just been spawned by a key binding. I initially didn't want to use a hook since that will effect every instance of the window (since the command goes through xterm, I don't want every xterm to float)
    The line is
    , ((modm , xK_m), spawn (myTerminal ++ " -e ncmpc") )
    What I essentially want to do is to spawn a terminal and float it at the same time. What this means I can press Mod+M and see my music playlist (without it splitting the current windows)
    Last edited by PandaMine (2008-10-11 10:43:41)

    Of course, you could just set a different wm name/class for the terminal with the playlist and tell Xmonad to float it that way. Much simpler
    But you couldn't do that if your terminal emulator doesn't support it, though. I know gnome-terminal does, probably most others do too..
    EDIT: I see you're using xterm, have you tried the -name and -class arguments ?

  • [SOLVED] Xmonad: trasparency doesn't work with compton intel

    Dear All,
    I am having a strange issue with Xmonad and I am not sure whether it is a problem of my Arch or Xmonad configuration. I decided to ask on Arch forum first, as my other computer running Arch has exactly the same Xmonad setup and it works fine. I would appreciate assistance from some Xmonad or Arch proficient users on this.
    Basically, I have this piece of code in my xmonad.hs:
    myLogHook :: Handle -> X ()
    , logHook = myLogHook dzenLeftBar >> fadeInactiveLogHook 0.8
    On the other computer this makes all the unfocused windowses slightly transparent. I find this feature very useful as it helps me focus on the window I am working with.
    For some reason this doesn't work on my laptop. My laptop is using xf86-video-intel since the lspci gave me
    %lspci | grep VGA
    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 03)
    Also I am invoking compton-git from AUR but I have also tried with xcompmgr in my xinitrc and it gave exactly the same result - no transparency whatsoever.
    I looked through my log file, but couldn't find anything relevant (please let me know if you can think of anything). How do I proceed with this issue? Do I try different composite managers? Do I try different drivers? Is there anyhting in X setup that I should include? Please let me know if you have any ideas.

    I am very sorry. I've just discovered that neither compton nor xcompmgr were installed. It's not only solved, it should be marked as [NOT RAISED]. I was migrating my configuration and overlooked some erm... details.

  • [SOLVED] GDM/Gnome won't start after update

    Today after I run pacman -Suy, GDM/Gnome won't start anymore after reboot. The error message I get after GDM starts is:
    Oh no! Something has gone wrong.
    A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please contact a system administrator
    Does anyone have any idea what happened and how can I recover the system?
    Here is the complete log for the update:
    http://bpaste.net/show/209520/
    Here is the journalctl -u gdm log:
    http://sprunge.us/LEOU
    Here is tail -2000 /var/log/messages.log:
    http://sprunge.us/ObWY
    And here is the /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
    http://bpaste.net/show/209549/
    I can't imagine any other log file that might help figure out what happened, let me know if there's anything else.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
    Edit: I stopped gdm, created a ~/.xinitrc and could successfully start Gnome with startx. The problem remains with GDM.
    Edit: The last update solved my problem: http://sprunge.us/RKWA

    I'm not sure my issue is really the same one, but am hoping for some guidance here if possible.  Trying to start GDM gives me the same error message/screen.  After tdm fails I can switch to a console,
    sudo systemctl stop gdm.service
    then
    sudo systemctl start lightdm.service
    and lightdm starts fine.  However, trying to log in to gnome-session gives me the very same error as I had with GDM.  I can log into XFCE just fine.  Attempting to start gnome-ession via startx also gives me the error screen.  Does anyone know how I can diagnose the problem?  Thanks,
    Matt

  • [SOLVED] hdapsd/gnome-hdaps-applet/kernel26/tp_smapi: Some issues

    Hej all,
    I posted some comments on the package hdapsd http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=5401. At the moment, loading the modules from tp_smapi and starting hdaps works without problems, when enabling the unload_heads by executing as root
    echo -1 > /sys/block/sda/device/unload_heads
    Now shaking the laptop (only a bit;) results in the output of hdapsd
    Fri Mar 6 17:30:48 2009: Starting hdapsd
    Fri Mar 6 17:33:16 2009: parking
    Fri Mar 6 17:33:19 2009: Error! Not parked when we thought we were... (paged out and timer expired?)
    Fri Mar 6 17:33:19 2009: un-parking
    But a simultaneously played movie stops... So something is working, but also the new gnome-hdaps-applet (version 20081204-1) does not change the "play" sign into the "pause" sign while shaking... All this worked while using the bit outdated kernel26tp with old versions of hdapsd and gnome-hdaps-applet.
    So, does someone has ideas how to debug this further?
    Thanks,
    Andreas
    Edit: The problem is solved and had nothing to do with the software/kernel. I needed to update the firmware of my drive with the help of lenovos FWHD55.ISO...(in fact it was a bit harder since I own a non-IBM harddrive...see here http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Talk:Prob … hard_disks and search for hfui15.exe, don't forget the -pm switch to tell the badly programmed software that your HD is Primary master...)

  • [SOLVED] Removing gnome

    Hey guys and girls,
    I have finally become comfortable enough in openbox that i am ridding my laptop of gnome for good!
    I have run these commands so far
    pacman -Rns gnome gnome-extra
    pacman -Runs gnome
    this has done a pretty good job of removing the stuff i dont need.
    however, when i sudo pacman -Syu
    i get 129 targets and 1039.67 MB  to install because it wants to reinstall/update everything I've just removed...
    how can I run pacman -Syu without reinstalling all that gnome junk?
    I assume I need to edit my repo, but Im not sure how, and Im also not sure what to remove and what to leave..
    any help at all is much appreciated

    yeh, I thought that, but it seems that everything still works fine.. and if I come across any thing that needs reinstalling ill reinstall it. And if thats true, apparently wicd was dependent on gnome packages.. but im still online, so go figure.
    Anyway, peace love and chicken gravy
    ah probably is wicd-gtk (just a front end for wicd), you can run wicd-curses from a terminal
