Problem child

We have a 9 seat xsan network used for video editing. All of the clients can communicate with our controllers with the exception of one. The problem child mount the san volume fine and I can authenticate to the machine for a minute or so after the client starts, but after that I can't. I can still ping the machine on both public and private ports and the san volume remains mounted and usable, but when I port scan I find that none of the ports are open (311 or anything else). I can flush the firewall rules with ipfw and no change. I've tried an xsan reinstall on the machine, but the same phenomenon occurs. The TCP/IP settings for this machine are configured exactly like all the others on the san and DNS is working as it should. Help! I'm really not sure what to do at this point. Any ideas or insight into this problem would be greatly appreciated.

The problem child has grown up and is now ready to fully participate in san society. FWIW here's what I did to solve the communication errors. Perhaps all or only one of the steps is needed, but I tried everything I could think of to open the ports permanently, and after all of the changes, I restarted the machine and the ports were open continuously.
First, I forced the MacOS firewall to open the ports by adding servermnrd to the list of apps to allow incoming connections. servermnrd is located in the usr/sbin hidden folder at the root. Second, while the network control panel is open, I deleted the network interfaces preference in the main library/preferences/systemconfiguration/ folder, and closed the control panel, which wrote a new preference. Third, I restarted the machine and flushed the PRAM (hold the opt-command-p-r keys while restarting and wait for a second audio chime). After the restart the ports are open continuously, and the MDC san admin app talks to the client as it should. No more problem child!

Accordion problem: child not display first time added

I have an mx Accordion that I extend to add some simple functionality (e.g., replace a child content at certain index). I tested it in a clean window and everything seemed to work fine, until I use it in my "real" app.
The problem is when I add a child content to it, the child never bothers to show up until after I click on another header and then go back to click on the header of the child that was just added. I try to call "invalidateParentSizeAndDisplayList();invalidateDisplayList(); invalidateSize();" in the child content's addhandler, and on the Accordion's "childAdd" handler, without luck.
Anyone has encountered this before? This is probably not the best place to ask for troubleshooting tips but this is really driving me crazy. Any lead is really appreciated!

ok. i figured it out. setting the "creationPolicy" of the navigatorContent to "all" solves the issue!

AddChild() problem - child doesn't apper at runtime

I've got very simple class which takes on constructor ArrayCollection of images and adding each one item using AddChild method, here is a code of this class:

PROBLEM: Only one of added objects (SliderItemsContainerAS) display nested images, why?
I make a little investigation and when I add somethink else than my Image e.g. Label created in SliderItemsContainerAS constructor it's appers in both instance of the display object.

An image can only have one parent. You are trying to add them to two

Problem Child of the Century...

So, I've been having problems with myPod for a while (still have an unanswered question: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1684130&tstart=0 ) and two days ago, I just wanted to throw the thing out of my dorm window.
I reloaded songs from my home library onto myPod and came back to college, all happy and content. However, I decided to put more songs onto it that I only had on this computer. So, I plug myPod into my laptop whilst it's waking up from hibernation and all of a sudden, the thing reverts to the wrong date and all my music is missing. Again.
Also, now when I look at the capacity of myPod in the Summary window, I have 13.67 of "other" on the thing. What is going on?!

If you are set to autosync your Touch it has screwed up your music index on your Touch. You will need to Restore it to reclaim that space and eliminate all the music you loaded from home. After restoring it, go to the summary tab of your Touch in iTunes and tick the box to manually manage your music and apply. In the future you will have to drag the music you want to your Touch and manually disconnect when you are done.

MSI 957X PUE.. My Problem Child

My MSI 975X PUE won't start. (I just took my whole computer apart and added water cooling). I don't see why it isn't booting though.
This is what happens:
I have reset the CMOS by removing the battery and checked everything is seated by the way:
Push start button
Everything springs to life
Loads BIOS
Press DEL
BIOS opens. Closes imediatly a few seconds later and computer continues running (but not starting) The screen goes into standby mode.
Initializing Hard Drive Controller is the error that the DLED gives me.

Wasn't that, but thanks for the help.
I did fix it though.
Turns out that the waterblock on my BFG 8600 GTS OC was so heavy and as it is mounted on the bottom of the card, it was pulling the card out of the slot (nothing that was visible). So now, the card it supported better it works. Don't know why that error was thrown though.
May have been a coincidence?

Problem with one AVCHD file using L&T

I just shot a project with a new Sony NX5 and recorded to both the FMU 128 hard drive and a 32 gig SDHC class 10 card. I have a total of 3hours and 20 minutes and about 75 clips. The clips are 1920x1080 60i, again it is AVCHD.
I'm using L&T to transcode to Pro Res LT. Everything imports fine, except clip #15, which is the longest clip at 36 minutes long. FCP quits and I get an error message.
I tried the files from the cards and FMU 128 (they were copied to my internal 7200rpm hard drive and an external Lacie connected via FW800). All give me a problem on clip 15.
I'm using FCP 7.

and then it keeps going. I thought the above would be the most important. I tried Clip Wrap, and that took forever!! It broke this problem child clip into 4 segments (3 of them were about 11 minutes and the 4th was a minute or so). The first clip played fine and the rest started with a green frame and were all "strobe effect" when the played. I did Clipwrap again and did "Join Selected Clips" and that seemed to work. It made the 4 clips one video and it plays perfectly.
So I got the clip to work using Clipwrap, but it wont' work in FCP L&T.

Problems with NSS partition mirroring and pool errors.

OS: NetWare 6.5SP8 latest patches applied
I have an NSS pool that is made up of two 2TB LUNS on my SAN array.
I've been trying to move the pool from the LUNs on my SAN array to a pair of 2TB VMWare disks by using the partition mirror method.
All of the LUNS reside on the same array, but the two original LUNs are attached to an HBA in passthrough mode, so the VMWare infrastructure does not see those LUNS.
One partition mirrored without issue. The second one shows as synchronized yet remained at 99%.
A forum search indicated that a pool rebuild was in order.
I ran a pool verify and rebuild and tried mirroring the "problem child" partition again with the same result.
Before running the rebuild a second time, I removed both mirrored pairs.

Last night, I repeated that same process and finally got 100% synchronization.
In the second and third rebuild processes, I got an error message stating that data would be lost if I continued the rebuild. Since I have backup, I continued the rebuild.
About 6 hours after that synchronization finished, I started receiving block error messages for the pool:
NSS-3.00-5002: Pool xxxx/DATA is being deactivated.
An error (20012(nameTree.c[45])) at block 536784421(file block -536784421)(ZID 6) has compromised volume integrity.
The pool deactivated itself.
I reset the server and when it mounted that volume, I continued to receive the errors.
I deactivated the pool, put it in maintenance mode and started another pool rebuild, this time with the /purge option.
I did not remove the mirrored pair before the rebuild started, so I have the one partition that gave me no problems un-mirrored and the partition that did give me problems is mirrored.
I don't know if that will have any affect on the rebuild process or not.
My questions are:
1) Will the fact that the pool is only half-mirrored be an issue for the rebuild?
2) Is there any other option in the rebuild process that I should have added?
3) Is the fact that I'm mirroring to a VMFS disk an issue? I could create a new pool/volume on those VMWare disks and use the server consolidation utility to copy the data between volumes, but my desire to avoid that was the reason to use the mirror process in the first place.

The difference between a sledge hammer and a Q-Tip is that you do a lot less damage with a Q-Tip.
Everything has been messed with to the point where it would be impossible for any other advice than make a new disk, make a new pool, make a new volume, and do your restore. Then, when all the data is restored without error, move the OLD DATA: volume out of the way and put in the NEW DATA: volume.

1. God only knows. It should not.
2. No. I think its an issue of doing too much, to quickly. It is unlikely a pool rebuild would "fix" a mirroring problem. I would not have gone ahead with a pool rebuild with mirroring broken.
3. A disk is a disk. Perhaps there is some underlying issue with the VMDK. How is it provisioned? Is it out of space? Buggy edge cases of having an extactly 2TB VMDK? Who knows.
The mirroring happens at a layer below the pool level. So I have a hard time understanding a how a rebuild would help mirroring unless the pool is really bent to begin with.
Again, the state of the current DATA: volume would be in question after all that fiddling, even if you can get it to work would you really trust it? I would not. I would recreate DATA: from backup on whatever new partition you want and chalk it up to experience. You can minimize the pain of that by restoring to a differently named volume and then renaming the volumes after you confirm proper operation.

Problem is:
Flash Player for IE11 (which is the worst browser ever developed - BAR NONE) is a Microsoft product, when it comes right down to it.
Adobe writes the base code and yes, they do collaborate on updates for it, but the gang in Redmond alter the plug-in and add "proprietary" code before embedding it, and at that point it's "their baby".
There are two (2) registry keys - 1 for 32 bit IE and the other for 64 bit IE, as well as a KB patch that prevent all but the most experienced Windows users from ever touching the Flash Player plug-in for IE. So there's NO WAY you could have done a clean install of the ActiveX plug-in in Windows 8. Unless you're an uber-geek, you can only update it through Windows Update.
WIn 8 is an abomination and IE11 made it worse. IE has always been the "problem child" of browsers, failing to handle CSS, Javascript, some PHP and most design "tweaks" that good webmasters can use with other browsers, trouble free.
I have IE8 on XP, 9 on VIsta, 11 on 7, 10 on 8 and 11 on 8.1... but they're all for testing only. I'd have to be out of my mind to ever think of using IE as my primary browser. ActiveX controls have to be disabled formost stuff and that opens millions of security holes in IE.
You've got a good video card and a decent sound card. It's a shame to waste them on a pile of garbage like IE, just because it came with Windows.

Fixin IE 7 CSS-problems without extra CSS

Lately I have been working on the layout for a foundation.
The project only has to be finished by February, so there is plenty
of time left. The design looks alright with Firefox, Opera and
Safari for Windows, but something goes wrong as soon as IE 7 tries
to interpret the CSS. The content-layer is not in place and the
"the round corners" at the bottom are not repeated only ones (as
demanded by the CSS).
I already wrote an extra stylesheet which already works out
alright on my localhost, but it hasn't got any round corners and
the layers are arranged "absolute" which (to me) is a less than
elegant work-around and might cause a few problems depending on
resolution and screen-format.
Does anyone have a suggestion how to fix this prpoblem within
the normal CSS which is still in the page code in

Is this the complete code?
Your first property declaration value on the margin of the
div containing the <ul> navigation is pulling the div 140px
towards the top of the containing element. That could push the div
off of the page, depending on the rest of your code and page
structure. Are you feeding these values to IE only? What is the
-140px top margin supposed to be doing? Check that first.
On browser detection, beware, many browsers report themselves
as something else! It is better to learn the different browser
inconsistencies and design for them. As Win IE (mainly pre V IE7
nowadays) is the main problem child here, using Conditional
Comments can help feed specific css to that particular browser and
its derivatives. Google for Conditional Comments for more
information.

Action Script Newbie has problem with Slide Show Pro

using Slide Show pro to display my images but I want to add some
external buttons that will switch albums when you click them (all
images are in there own album, giving me the Grid effect when you
click see all) I have asked for help on how to do this on their
forums, but they are useless (so far) so I came here. Below is the
code SSP provides for external Next/Previous buttons that switch
images inside albums.
I am hoping someone here knows SSP well enough to help me
with this.

Javascript is VERY different from Java. Your code example is Javascript, a scripting language invented by Netscape. Do a web search for "javascript images" for lots of good pointers.

WRT54G/EZXS16W Intermittent Problem w/1 Computer Connecting to Internet

Here is my setup:
1 Desktop (problem child) running Windows 7 Pro 64bit
1 Desktop running XP (Dell with basic 100Mb onboard NIC)
1 Laptop running Windows 7 Home
EZXS16W 16 port 10/100 Switch
WRT54G v6 Router (latest firmware)
All connections use static IP
Problem has been occurring for about 2 years with "problem child" desktop. All other machines work fine with no intermittent problems.
Problem is that while browsing, every 30-40 minutes or so, the desktop will stop being able to reach internet websites. Internal networking (file share to other machines, etc, still works).
Resolution, if I wait 10-15 minutes it will start working again on its own. Or if I unplug the router and plug it back in, that works too.
Things that don't work:
1) Clearing internet cache
2) Disabling/Re-enabling NIC
Troubleshooting tried:
1) Upgraded router to latest firmware
2) Upgraded problem child desktop from XP Pro 32bit to Windows 7 Pro 64bit
3) Disabled on-board NIC (Marvell) and installed Intel Pro GT 1000 PCI-E card
4) Swapped ethernet cable with known good cable (from other desktop not exhibiting issues)
5) Took switch out of the equation running all wired connections direct through router
NOTE ** Ancillary problem is that 99% of the time, I cannot get to the admin interface of the router. I try using all 3 machines (wired/wireless) and via IE and Firefox. I enter the correct username/password and I get a blank screen and the browser indicates the page loading is Done. On the rare occasions I am able to get into the admin page, there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why.

Give the static ip address (in the range of the router) and the static DNS to the computer.
Click on the Start button > Settings > Control Panel >Network Connections- Right click on the icon for Local area connection and go to properties- On the 'General' tab select 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and click on the Properties button- Select 'Use the following IP address'- Provide IP Address - 192.168.1.5, Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway - 192.168.1.1- Preferred DNS 192.168.1.1, Alternate DNS - 4.2.2.2 >Click on Ok button to Save and Click on "Close" on main Properties window. Now check the connection.

Weird error message from aplay

Got a new system this week and everything is set up and working, except a few weird audio glitches. Audio goes through the onboard HDMI thingie, but I'm not using HDMI; my monitor sends the HDMI signal to a different computer and VGA to my problem child. So HDMI audio is inactive. I finally got alsa and all the other audio apps to stop trying to use the nonexistent HDMI by default (resulting in a segfault) by simply deleting that module from libs/modules/{...} I set up /etc/asound.conf to identify the analog PCM as the default (card 2). But there's a further complication. I also have an external sound adapter plugged into USB for my podcast work, and it shows up as card #1.
Anyway, thanks to the default settings in asound.conf I can get most programs to send output to the analog onboard card and external speakers. But when I try to play a wave file with aplay, I get
aplay: set_params:1081: Sample format non available
That message came up in another thread in 2007, and the solution was to install an updated set of alsa-plugins... but pacman says mine are up to date and I assume any problem with them in 2007 is no longer an issue -- at any rate, aplay worked fine with wave files on my old PC. mpg123 plays mp3 files fine, and mplayer handles wave files (et al) fine... it's just aplay that's giving me grief.
I do *not* run jack, except during my podcast because idjc requires it.
Anyone else familiar with that error and can recommend a fix?

I believe that this is caused by setting the attribute exclusive-write-access=false in the orion-ejb-jar.xml file for your EJBs.
This is a known OC4J problem: a bug has been logged and it's been fixed here. The next minor release of OC4J will contain the fix for this.
In the meantime as a workaround removing the exclusive-write-access=false attribute from the orion-ejb-jar.xml files for your beans should get you going.

I'm stumped. There are no filters, I've tried adding trim to the subdepartment return and the where clause in the class selection. Debug shows no errors. Firebug shows the correct value in the DOM.
Has anybody see this behavior? How do I get this one class to populate in the shuttle?

Finally getting a chance to get back to this issue. It looks like you were right with the cascading LOV. The Page items to submit was the culprit. It was set to the wrong item and when I change it to the class cd, it fixed the problem. It still is weird compared to the other subdepartments. When you highlight in the left subdept shuttle, the class values appear for everything except my one problem child still. After updating the LOV, they still do not appear until you move the subdept to the right shuttle. But at least they appear now. Thanks.

Font antialiasing misconfiguration that made small fonts look bad; had to edit ~/.fonts.conf manually to defeat the system preventing antialiasing at small font sizes. Screen is small (14") but has very high resolution (1440x900), so this seems to work ok here.
Evolution doesn't autocomplete the email addresses of people you communicate with regularly. Fixed: turn on automatic contacts and autocomplete.

Toggle state of hardware mute button and software mute button not synchronized. If you hit the hardware mute button, it lights. If you subsequently unmute via software, the sound is umuted, but the hardware mute button remains lit. Pressing the lit hardware mute button in that state will result in the hardware mute button becoming unlit but the sound muted. Seems to have gotten fixed in upgrade to 2.6.34-999-generic kernel while trying to fix USB resume issue.

Sometimes audio mute button stops working. What's in syslog: keyboard.c: can't emulate rawmode for keycode 240 for each button press. Not sure why it works sometimes and not others.
HDMI audio probably busted with installation of http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2010-05-06-lucid/ to fix https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/5661492. KDE came up and warned me the device had disappeared when I rebooted with the new kernel.
Complete system lockups at various points (maybe once every couple days) requiring a hard power reset. I haven't been able to distinguish a pattern yet. Might be related to the wireless errors below; someone else claimed that a similar wireless card got hot enough under Linux to cause disconnects and weird system behavior. I haven't seen crazy temperatures yet though.
Wireless network card (Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200, using the iwlagn driver) freaks out every 20 minutes or so and "restarts" (whatever that means). Seems to be a firmware problem. Symptom: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000. in syslog. sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off doesn't fix it, upgrade to 2.6.34.99 kernel didn't fix it, can't seem to find any newer firmware to try than what's in http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/downloads/iwlwifi-6000-ucode-9.193.4.1.tgz. WTF in syslog, every so often: wpa_supplicant[1196]: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys plus about 10 other lines of gibberish. At boot time, xdpyinfo | grep resolution still reports wrong DPI (reported: 96x96; actual: 120x120) and screen size (reported: 381x238mm; actual: 300x190mm) even after generating an xorg.conf and adding a DisplaySize 300 190 to the single Section "Monitor" in the config. This doesn't seem to be harming anything, but I don't know really what uses this info. Using xrandr -dpi 120 fixes the resolution and screen size reported by xdpyinfo.
Firefox is a problem child for display at 120DPI (native screen DPI); some fonts are huge or tiny when they shouldn't be. Setting the layout.css.dpi in about:config to 120 seems to have no effect. This makes Firefox unusable for me on this system. Thankfully, Google Chrome doesn't have the same problem.

When bringing up a backgrounded Emacs window, sometimes Emacs refuses to give me control of the point in that window until I sacrifice the chicken of selecting any item from that window's menu bar.
Emacs acts upon first click of any frame; clicking in a background emacs window reposititions the point in that window. I tried to fix this by adding (setq x-mouse-click-focus-ignore-position t) to my .emacs file as per http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Mouse-Commands.html. This actually solved the problem: the first click of a window no longer repositioned the point. Unfortunately, contrary to the docs and contrary to the experience of somebody else in #emacs on freenode IRC, this setting also makes the mouse useless for selecting text, moving the point, or scrolling the window text in emacs. It just won't do any of those things for me anymore when this option is set. I can't even shift click on a window to set the font size. This symptom is worse than the problem I was trying to solve by doing it, so I left it off.

Opening Rhythmbox from the applications menu doesn't actually open the main window, it just creates a toolbar icon. You then need to know enough to go click on "Show Rhythmbox" in the toolbar icon dropdown.
Konversation: sometimes the mouse pointer "disappears" while hovering over the nick list and the channel list. Only fixed by a restart of Konversation (closing the window and restoring it from the system tray doesn't help).
Cut and paste is, as always, horrific. You need to use Shift-Ctrl-C in the Gnome terminal vs. Ctrl-C in other Gnome apps; Emacs meta-W doesn't put things onto the X clipboard by default, etc. I really don't understand why you can't remap cut copy and paste under Gnome. If you could remap the Gnome keybindings for cut, paste, copy, etc, I'd bind copy to Windowskey-C, paste to Windowskey-V, cut to Windowskey-X, and Undo to Windowskey-Z. Then at least for all Gnome apps that followed the system keybindings, most of the pain would disappear, because the cutnpaste shortcuts wouldn't step on alternate meanings.
Still doesn't look quite as nice as the Mac does, dispite newer and better video and display hardware, no matter how many hours I spend messing around with display settings, font settings, etc.

Not sure how you figure it's an "advanced router" problem. I'd be happy to buy a different router, but I'd need to be told which one to buy. The router I'm connecting to is a barebones Linksys WRT54G (the blue and black one with the two antennas that you see everywhere). These routers are maybe the most common router on the planet, AFAICT.
I have also seen Compiz lockups, but I didn't mention those in the above; the lockups I'm seeing are true system lockups. The system stops responding to any input on network, so it cannot even be restarted remotely.
