Problem connecting through with ODBC driver

I have a virtual machine (Win XP SP3) running Oracle 11.1.0.7.0. The name of the machine is UK010862.uk.int.**********.com.
sqlnet.ora:
SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= ( TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
tsnames.ora:
ORCL =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = UK010862)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = orcl)
I'm running this machine on a Windows 7 64bit dekstop which has Oracle InstantClient 11.2 installed.
When I set up an ODBC connection on the Oracle server with the TSN name (ORCL), it works fine, I can connect to the listener. When I do it with hostname:port it fails.
When I'm trying to connect from the Windows 7 machine, I can't connect at all. If I use the TSN name I get 'could not resolve the connect identifier specified' error. If I use the host:port I get 'listener was not given the SERVICE_NAME in CONNECT_DATA' error.
I checked that I can ping the two machines from both ends. I have the hostname in the hosts file. I checked that the 1521 port is listening with telnet. I also have the TSN_ADMIN environmental variable set to the folder where the tsnames.ora file is on the server.
What else am I possibly missing?
Many thanks

Sorted: tnsnames.ora file was missing on the client.

  • Instant client with ODBC driver

Hi, I have problem with the instant client version 10.2 with ODBC driver. I have the instant client base package and ODBC package installed in my computer. the Oracle ODBC driver did appear in the ODBC driver list, when I test the connection with driver, it gives error "Unable to connect, SQLState=08004 [ORACLE] [ODBC] ORA-12154 TNS could not resolve the connect identifier specified" I have another computer which has Oracle 8i client installed and works fine. I copied sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora to the instantclient installation folder, same error appears. here is the contents of sqlnet.ora:
    # SQLNET.ORA Network Configuration File: c:\oracle8i\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)

here is the contents of tnsname.ora:

    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = barkeep)
I test the host connection with telnet, it works.
can anybody out there walk me through how to set up instant client?
    thanks.

Thanks Sanjay - I had this problem and your suggestion fixed it: setting the TNS_ADMIN did the trick.
Note: This was on a development PC which already had the Oracle Client drivers installed (so I already had a different TNS_NAMES.ORA in that installation).
It is worth noting that on my target deployment machine which DOESN'T have the Oracle Client drivers (just the InstantClient + Instant-ODBC) I didn't need to set TNS_ADMIN
    I'm using the 11g InstantClient (11.1.0.6.0 32 bit)
Hope this helps someone, and thanks again Sanjay for posting :o)

  • Memory leak when using database connectivity toolset and ODBC driver for MySQL

The "DB Tools Close Connection VI" does not free all the memory used when "DB Tools Open Connection VI" connects to "MySQL ODBC Driver 3.51".
I have made a small program that only opens and close the connection that I run continously and it's slowly eating all my memory. No error is given from any of the VI's. (I'm using the "Simple Error Handler VI" to check for errors.)
I've also tried different options in the DSN configuration without any results.

Apart from the use of iSQLPlus, Grid Control by itself allows you to Execute SQL statements on a single or multiple targets at the same time.
This also give the added advantage of keeping and viewing the execution history.
Select Targets > Databases > Execute SQL (from buttom page).
Note: I tested in GC 10.2.0.2.

  • Connect Lotus Notes with ODBC driver

I am trying to figure out connecting SQL Developer with ODBC connection ( set on to ODBC Data Source ) for lotus notes. I am able successfully connect through Excel with that connection. With SQL Developer , its asking for JDBC driver but lotus notes version (R5) what I am using does not support JDBC driver.
Is there any way to connect using ODBC data source for lotus notes.

    No.
SQL Developer is a Java based tool and requires JDBC. Theoretically you could use the JDBC-ODBC bridge, but there would be no point. SQL Developer is an Oracle specific development and query tool which allows connection to selected other DBMSs in order to support migration to Oracle. Lotus Notes is not one of the supported systems.
SQL Developer is NOT a general purpose, multi-DBMS tool.

  • Visual Studio 2010 64bit cann't connect Oracle database through 64bit ODBC Driver

    Hi,
I am developing an 64bit And-In software. My OS is windows7 64bit Ultimate. Developer tool is
    Microsoft  Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate 64bit any-CUP.
Server is SUN server and Oracle database 10.2.0.5 64bit enterprise edition.
I have installed instantclient-odbc-win64-10.2.0.5 on my computer.
I am able to connect through the command line sqlplus user/pass@server.
In date source(c:\windows\system32\odbcad32.exe), ODBC Driver connection successful.
But in VS2010 C#, use Tools -> Connect Database,I get an error 193 (Oracle in
    instantclient10_2,c:\ora10_64\SQORA32.dll) cann't be loaded.
SQORA32.dll is 32bit ODBC Driver or 64bit ODBC Driver?
How can I connect database with vs2010 64bit?
    Regards

There is no Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate 64bit as far as I know.  It's a 32 bit app.    Generally you'd need to install a 32 bit client to use the 32 bit tools.
    Hope it helps,

  • Problem with ODBC Driver 8.1.7.7

When we try to execute the following sql command, an error message is displayed.
    update tr_werk_tab set (name1,name2) = (select name1, name2 from tr_werk_tab)
The table in the "select" clause is originally another table. The statement only works with "one" field referenced.
    The error message is:
ORA-00923 FROM keyword not found where expected.
This was not a Problem with all the other ODBC Driver versions (7.3, 8.0.5, 8.1.5, 8.1.6).
What can we do ? The statement works with sql-plus.

First, it appears that you've found the bug. I've confirmed it on my box. I would suggest that you log a TAR with Oracle support so that someone can start looking into the problem. I suspect that some of the SQL munging the driver has to do is mangling your query, but I'd need to do a trace at the TNS level or on the database to see exactly what's being passed over the wire.
There are previous versions of the 8.1.7.x ODBC driver available for download on OTN. Since it worked correctly in previous versions of the driver, perhaps one of these earlier 8.1.7.x drivers happens not to have this particular bug.
It appears that you could re-write the query, i.e.
    update emp set empno = (select 1 from dual), ename = (select 'Justin' from dual);
though that's going to be almost twice as expensive as the proper form.

  • Slow connection through Oracle ODBC

    Hello,
I have problems with connecting to ORACLE fr om IIS (Win2000) using Oracle's ODBC driver.
I am using Oracle 8.1.7 SE. I tried to change connection pooling timeout of the ODBC driver, but still connections time out after a minute or so and it takes 6-8 seconds to load a simple web page that reads only ~ 1 kb of information from ORACLE. The time to establish a connection to MS (Access ,SQL server) is less than a second. How can I establish connections to ORACLE faster?
    Please help,
    thanks,
    Gyorgy

    Justin,
    thanks for your quick replies.
    Using Oracle ODBC 32Bit Test:
the connection seems instantaneous. I tried to enable connection pooling for Oracle ODBC driver with a wait in the pool for 600s. Maybe this will keep it live and I can instantiate a fake connection every 10 minutes? I do not what else I could try ...

  • Having problems connecting Coldfusion10 with sql server express 2012

    Hi,
I am having problems setting up a datasource for a local sql express 2012 server. Its running as the default instance. Connections are working with ODBC and client told just not Coldfusion.
When I try to set up a connection using the sql driver I get this error:

    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    Hi Rossco199,
The issue is likely caused by you not having yet assigned port 1433 in SQL Express itself. Follow the procedure described on the following page, and you should solve the problem: http://www.tensixconsulting.com/2012/02/sqlserverexception-the-tcpip-connection-to-the-hos t-port-1433-has-failed/
In particular, remember to assign port 1433 to 127.0.0.1 and to IPAll. Also set 'Active' and 'Enabled' to 'Yes' for the IP 127.0.0.1. While you're at it, if 'Named Pipes' is disabled, you should right-click on it and select 'enable'. Afterwards, restart the Windows service 'SQL Server(SQLEXPRESS)'.
It is advisable to allow ColdFusion server authentication. However, the SQL Express server is configured by default to allow only Windows authentication. This conflict may lead to errors.
Should you then encounter the dreaded Error 233: "No process is on the other end of the pipe", proceed as follows. Open the tool Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. Right-click on the name of your database server, then on Properties. In the user interface that opens, click on Security. Select the combined 'SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode'. Restart the service 'SQL Server(SQLEXPRESS)'.

  • Oracle 9i Lite Issue with ODBC driver

Cannot reference table in user schema without schema ref
I create a user TESTUSR and a table TESTTBL, and when I log in with user TESTUSR in SQL*Plus,
the following will work just fine.
    SELECT * FROM TESTTBL
but then when my ASP on IIS does the same SELECT,
it will report "[POL-5130] table or view not found".
But if I use a schema alias,
    SELECT * FROM TESTUSR.TESTTBL
    it will work fine.
ODBC Admin shows: "Oracle Lite 40 ODBC Driver 4.00.00.00".
    Is this a bug ?

I connect to the database through the same user that created those tables. Do I still need a public synonym ?

  • Creating application with odbc driver LabVIEW 8.0

    Hi,
I've looked through a lot of examples and tried out a lot of them, I still can't get this right. I have a login vi which connects to a MySQL database via an ODBC driver to authenticate a user, if username & password are right user is sent to another vi. This works well on my computer. I am trying to build an executable/installer to run this on another computer that has LabVIEW 8.0 installed but not the ODBC drivers.  I followed examples and included the MDAC files in my application (executable file), and the .udl file I created. I then included the file in my installer. When i run my application in another computer I get the error 'Data source name not found and no default driver specified in DB Tools Open Connec (string).vi'.
    1. What more must I add cause I thought adding MDAC and the udl file was enough.
    2. Just to confirm: do I add the MDAC in support files in Executable file builder or do I add the files in Installer builder?
    3. If I need to include the odbc driver in the application, at what stage (where?) do I do that?
Please do not refer me to help files Applicationi Builder files for versions 7.0 and less because the setup is different and I just got confused.
    Please help.
    Thanx.

    Hey ntfan,
Here is a paragraph taken from the Database Connectivity Toolkit ReadMe file.
    Distributing Stand-Alone Applications and DLLs
    When
you use components from the Database Connectivity Toolset to build a
stand-alone application or a DLL with the Application Builder, you must
install MDAC to the target computer if it is not already installed
along with the appropriate support files. A build script is included in
the Database Connectivity Toolset to help you include all these
components. Refer to chapter 6 of the Database Connectivity Toolset
    User Manual for more information.
Are you using a build script as described above?
