• Performance and cross-platform problems in JMF

Hi,
I am building an application for audio and video synchronization, I was using the Processing audio and video libraries to deal with the sound and video but I soon changed to JMF because the Processing video library is strongly dependent on quickime and can only deal with .mov files.
I got it to work with all the custom GUI elements I had already built (Like graphical timeline representation with time grid, playhead, timeline zoom control, markers and video controls) and it works, but there are states where I have to make a player.getMediaTime() in every frame to synch the video position of the playing video with my graphical playhead representations, and at that stage the application gets really slow and unstable. Are the getMediaTime() and setMediaTime(Time time) that heavy??? is there a way around it (even if it means expanding the actual JMF classes??)
The other problem is that I tried to run the applet in a MacBookPro and it didn't run, throws a bunch of exceptions saying that it was unable to create the player. what problems could make an applet that runs in windows, not run in Mac OS X??
Thanks in advance, I've been hitting my head on the walls because of this for a while!

Of course, the simple and obvious solution is often the valid one. On Windows you need both: /r/n. It appears I'll still need to #ifdef as doing both on the Mac gives me an extra character, but at least that's manageable.

• Classpath problems with JMF

Hi all,
I'm trying to develop a simple application using JMF; I've problems importing classes from javax.media package. Problem with my application is that when I explicitly specify classpath as a command line argument to javac my application compiles; but if I use CLASSPATH environment variable it doesn't. Here's the output:
situ@situ-desktop:~/myjava/media$ cat First.java
import javax.media.*;
public class First{
situ@situ-desktop:~/myjava/media$ echo $CLASSPATH
/home/situ/jmf/JMF-2.1.1e/lib/jmf.jar:/home/situ/jmf/JMF-2.1.1e/lib/sound.jar:.:
situ@situ-desktop:~/myjava/media$ javac First.java
First.java:1: package javax.media does not exist
import javax.media.*;
^
1 error
situ@situ-desktop:~/myjava/media$ javac -classpath /home/situ/jmf/JMF-2.1.1e/lib/jmf.jar First.java
situ@situ-desktop:~/myjava/media$
Thanks.

According to the documentation, it wants you to set two environmental variables, JMFHOME and CLASSPATH. And it wants the CLASSPATH to be relative to that JMFHOME variable.
Try this.
setenv JMFHOME /home/someuser/JMF2.1.1
setenv CLASSPATH $JMFHOME/lib/jmf.jar:.:${CLASSPATH}

• Re: Problems using JMF

JMF doesn't support many different video resolutions looks like this is one of them, see the JMF main page for a list of supported formats and resolutions. I ran into the same problem trying to run .Mov files, out of 8 I downloaded to test, only 1 played and without sound.

It was just experimentation for me so I didn't really try too hard to find another solution, but if I were forced to do it, I would probably seek the solution in C/C++ and use JNI to call the functions from my Java app since it dosn't seem like Sun is going to update the JMF package anytime soon.

• Problems with JMF and audio files.

Sofware:
Java Version 1.5.0_03
JMF Version 2.1.1e
Windows XP SP2
I have a application that consists of 2 parts. The first is an editor for creating exercises, like multiple-choice, matching and so on. The second part is a “client”, used to solve the exercises. The client uses Java Webstart.
When I include audio clips in the exercises they play just fine using the client, but in the editor program I just get a clicking sound, and then the application stops responding.
The strange part is that the editor and client use the exact same code to playback audio clips.
The old version of the editor (developed for Java 1.3.x) works just fine under Java 1.3.x, but when the same byte-code is launched under Java 1.5 I get the same problem (clicking sound and then the application stops responding).
Any suggestions?

When installing JMF, two new packages are stored in the jre\lib\ext folder : jmf.jar and sound.jar.
Sound.jar contains the same api that are in the packages sound.midi and sound sampled contained in jre.
Maybe these new api are an improved version but i noticed some trouble playing sound and i delete sound.jar file, now it works fine.
Try this, maybe you had the same problem.

• I capture a video but can't save it .How to halndle the problem via JMF?

Hi everyone, I'm starting to use JMF and faced the problem
The problem is to save captured video in .avi or .mov formats.I managed to capture and play it in a player, but can't save it .On the other hand when I used processor to capture and save the video , I've succeeded .But my task is to combine these two actions. Give a hint please.
All kind of replies will be greatly appreciated.

• Network problem in JMF project of video conference

hello,
i am working on video conferencing tool project. We are using a server-client architecture, but for
voice chat or Video chat or Video conferencing we are using peer 2 peer connection.
We developed this in Java Media Framework.
Now when we use this tool in internet we are getting problem.
Like we tested it from USA to India, at that time it works fine but when we use it from Germany to
India or vice versa then some times only voice comes (in video chat)but video doesn't.and also video start for few moments then it disappear.Many times nothing comes whether it is voice/video chat.when we see in the media properties the stream it gives zero in JMF player window.
I need a help on these :
1. What can be the reason for some times video chat work and many times it doesn't.
2. Is NAT etc need to implement.
3. P2P is reliable or not , i also heard about JXTA, can we use it with JMF(for internet and intranet version).
Please help me out. If need more information on question then let me know.
Looking forward for reply.
Thank you

hi,
I changed the TTL in SessionAddress of destination address to 255, but still i am not getting any voice or video data. AVReceive2 is still saying "Waiting for RTP data reply.." in almost cases.
When i send text data message (through TCP connection via server) it reaches well, but when i send voice/video data through UDP data (P2P connection) it doesn't reach.
I checked with Wireshark packet sniffer tool, and i found that other side person has private IP address and the destination port is opened on his public server.
In more clear way :
My IP Address is public IP Address say PUBLIC_IP_1 and also server is running on my system.
Other person's IP address is some private IP address( the person is staying in country) and the Server address ( i think, to which he is connected) is some public IP address say PUBLIC_IP_2. I am sure about that because i asked him his ip address by ipconfig command on his system which has given private ip address.
So when we start the voice/video chat session the RTP session becomes as rtp://<*PUBLIC_IP_1*>:21020 according to type of data and i set the TTL as 255 for destination IP address(which is given as PUBLIC_IP_2 in program).
Now when we see the packet transmission and receiving operation, packet reaches from My PUBLIC_IP_1 to PUBLIC_IP_2 at port number 21020 ( suppose voice session)but no pakcet from other side that is PUBLIC_IP_2 from port 21026.
NOTE : _21020 is target client's receiving port and 21026 is my receiving port._
I am not able to understand the condition because in one of our session out of 10-15 tries , we got voice stream from other side but no video stream in video chat session. At same time other person is not getting any stream.
So is it a some network issue? because in jmf we have to give ip address of the target system for RTP transmission.*
Please help me if there is some other way to do it.
Please help me out, what should i do to solve this problem.

• Problem in jmf voice capture

I have made my custom DataSource, custom DirectSoundStream, custom DSoundST class for voice capture.
Capture Format:
Encoding: Linear
Sample Rate: 8000
Sample Size: 16
Channel: 1
capture buff size: 320
Read method in custom DSoundST class which calls native read method of DSound class (in package com.sun.media.protocol)
has variable delay in reading capture voice from microphone.
The following code sample in DSoundST class gives variable delay(of 60,42,0,145,211 ms) in read method
long t = System.currentTimeMillis();
this.result = super.read(this.data, this.offset, this.len);
System.err.println("# DSoundSTRead "+this.len+" "+this.result+" "+(System.currentTimeMillis()-t));
Why there is variable delay in the above read() method. How to remove this delay, how to have constant delay ?

Dear captfoss,
You seem very knowledgable about FMJ and JMF. I know absolutely nothing about FMJ except that it exists, and that questions about it should be directed elsewhere as 3rd party libraries aren't supported on these forums.
Additionally, it's rude to hijack someone else's thread with an unrelated question.
And to offer completely generic advice, "more lag" generally means "more buffer"... so you probably want "less buffer" to have "less lag". You'll have to figure out how to get "less buffer" yourself because, as mentioned above, I don't know anything about FMJ and it's inappropriate to ask about it further (1) on this forum in general (2) on this thread specifically.

• Capture device problem with JMF

Hi,
I am doing audio and video transmission using the AVTransmit2 program. This program is at the server side. When 1client requests a transmission, it works fine. I am able to receive the audio and video. But when i have more than 1client i get the error: "Capture device in use", "Cannot create data source". I have created 2 players to render the audio and video on the screen.
Note: I am using an Object Request Broker(Visibroker) to route the client requests to the server and sending the replies back to the clients.
Please help, it's urgent.
For any reply e-mail me at: [email protected]
Thanking you in advance.

No, sorry. Haven't got an solutions yet........
However messing around with the permissions and settings in etc/security/console.perms and /etc/udev/50-udev.rules is causing it to not work in root either.....so i think it has something to do with it. However not figured it out yet.
But these files and setting do not apply to windows.....
Does anybody hav a solutions for the problem?
Greeting,
Olly

Blue screen means something in the Windows code is crashing your computer. There's probably not anything you can do to fix it except unplug any devices you have plugged in...
