Problem in MIT-SCREEN-SAVER

I'm using beforelight (v1.3) from XFree86. This program uses MIT-SCREEN-SAVER for screensaver event. It works fine under 5.6, and 5.8 if built with 32-bit. But after I rebuilt it with 64-bit (add -xarch=v9a in Makefile) and ran the binary, I got a core dump in the function XScreenSaverSelectInput(). Workshop reports invalid address alignment in XScreenSaverSelectInput at 0xffffffff7e510108. What could be the problem?

Tested with a simple program, main() does nothing but initializing MIT-SCREEN-SAVER and starting a eventloop listening for screensaverevent. The initialization code is:
int main(argc, argv)
int argc;
char **argv;
Widget toplevel;
XEvent event;
XScreenSaverNotifyEvent *sevent;
XID               kill_id;
Atom          kill_type;
toplevel = XtAppInitialize (&app_con, "Beforelight", NULL, ZERO,
                    &argc, argv, NULL, NULL, ZERO);
display = XtDisplay (toplevel);
root = DefaultRootWindow (display);
screen = DefaultScreen (display);
if (!XScreenSaverQueryExtension (display, &ss_event, &ss_error))
          exit (1);
if (XScreenSaverGetRegistered (display, screen, &kill_id, &kill_type))
          XErrorHandler old_handler = XSetErrorHandler (ignoreError);
          XKillClient (display, kill_id);
          XSync (display, 0);
          XSetErrorHandler (old_handler);
XScreenSaverSelectInput (display, root, ScreenSaverNotifyMask);
XSync (display, False);
XSetScreenSaver(display, MyTimeout, 0, 0, 0);
eventloop();
This works fine when linked with 32-bit, but crashed (sometimes report BadDrawable) in XScreenSaverSelectInput(). I'm wondering if the 64-bit MIT-SCREEN-SAVER doesn't work properly.

  • Security problem: Waking from screen saver botched in 10.5.5

    When using my MBP, I like to have my screen saver as simple computer lock in that it requires a password to wake the computer from sleep or screen saver (option in the Security system preference pane).
    Since the update to 10.5.5, my computer just wakes from sleep or when in screen saver mode, without demanding a password to be entered, even though the option is checked in the pane. I did an immediate SMC reset after the installation because the fans were acting oddly, and a PRAM zap just now to see if it'd do any good with this problem.
    Has anyone experienced something similar?

    I had this happen a few times back when I was running Tiger. I was able to fix it by going to Homefolder/Library/Preferences/ByHost and deleting all of the com.apple.screensaver.xxxxxxx plist files, and then logging out/in.

  • Problems with Mavericks screen saver

    I downloaded Mavericks on Saturday.  On Sunday after the download was completed my screensaver from my IPhoto library was replaced by a blue "wave" shot which is one of the default screens on the new OS.  I tried to reload my photo as a screensaver with no success.  I spent 3 hours with Apple Support and three different support representatives.  All unsuccessful.  It would appear that the Mavericks OS will only allow you to use one of the Apple default screens as the screen saver.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?  In my old OS one simply clicked on system preferences, then screensavers and you chose a photo from the list of Apple landscapes, etc or a photo from the IPhoto library.  That option seems not to exist any longer. Welcome comments by new Mavericks users.

    Yes,  I have the same issue.

  • Has anyone had a problem with the screen saver not coming on?

    My preferences settings are as follows:
    Energy
    Computer sleep: 15 min
    Display sleep: 15 min
    Desktop & Screen Saver
    Start screen saver: 5 min

    hi Thank you so much for your reply. I swear with every Apple product every time there is a problem with a product it acts up at home but at soon as I get to the store everything is resolved. There is no longer a problem. I end up looking like someone who is trying to hassle the employees. I will test it out for a little longer to see if it might improve.

  • Problems with screen saver image quality

    Just got a MPB 15 inch. Very happy with it but have a small problem with the screen saver. I use my i Photo folders as the source for screen saver images. Some photos are shown in very good quality but others are very poor - as if low res. The original images are all of the same high quality. Seems to occur whichever video setting is used under power saving. A minor issue I now but any ideas?

    Hi, Mark. Apparently some of the photos being used are low-resolution thumbnails, not full-resolution images.
    What version of iPhoto do you have, and which OS version are you running? On my MBP running 10.5.6 and iPhoto 7.1.5, "All folders" is not an option in the Screensaver pane of System Prefs, so I don't know what you're actually choosing. But if I select "Pictures" (which refers to the Pictures folder in my Home folder), then the screensaver uses every .jpg file that it finds in any of the several iPhoto Libraries inside my Pictures folder. The thumbnails created by iPhoto are .jpgs, so they get used by the screensaver along with full-size high-resolution images.
    The solution is not to select a folder that contains any thumbnails.

  • My screen saver has become to large for the screen. i have had this problem before and just reset the ipad. This time it hasnt worked

    i have a 3yr old ipad. it is ios8. the newest operating system. my problem is the screen saver will not downsize. it is to big for the screen. i have used my fingers to pinch the screen smaller but it douesnt work. in the past if i shut it off and press the bottom centre button it resets the ipad. that isnt working now.

    I just did that and everything looked ok.  I do notice however when I open up my calendar off to the left hand side where all the calendars are listed there is a triangle with a exclamation mark in the middle of it.  When I clicked on it a window, just like the one that has been popping up, opens and it gives the same message.  "server resoponded with an error" and it lists a various event and gives the choice to go offline, or revert to server.  I have to choose go offline in order to get the window to close.  Any idea what is happening?

  • 10.4.6 won't sleep or run screen saver

    After upgrading my mini to 10.4.6, it will not sleep the screen or spin down the disks, and the screen saver will not run. Other than this, everything is fine. Any advice, anyone?

    I discovered that the problem with the screen saver not activating was being casued by version 2.0 of Griffin's RadioSHARK software. After updating to 2.01, released today, my screen saver now runs. However, the drives still won't go to sleep.

  • Screen saver can't be disabled; starts when it feels like it

    I have a weird problem with my screen saver. I had to shut down my Mac mini (G4, 1.42GHz) manually via the power button a few days ago, and ever since then, the system refuses to obey the "Start screen saver:" time delay preference in System Preferences. I'd always had it set to "Never", but now it always starts after the standard time interval. I've since discovered that even if I set it to 3 minutes, it still waits a half hour or so to start (I'm assuming it's the default delay).
    I've checked for corrupt preferences in my home and main Library directories files using plutil, but they're all good; I booted with the restore disc to repair any startup disk HDD errors in Disk Utility (there were some errors, in what files and of what vintage I know not, but I was able to fully repair the disk and now no problems are reported); I've even trashed and re-set my screen saver .plist file (~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.SOMEHASH.plist) a few times. From the looks of things, the Screen Saver preferences pane is recording the correct idle time and screen saver in the .plist file, it's just not honoring the idle time. It does, however, allow me to change the screen saver itself. I don't have any screen savers installed that didn't come with the system -- I've been alternating between the iTunes and RSS ones since I can't choose 'None'.
    Any ideas on how to fix this? I can't emphasize enough how much I hate screen savers (no offense to the programmers, they're just not my thing!). It's especially frustrating that I have to leave the computer sit for a half hour just to test any possible solution...

    So after some time it stopped doing it. Then it started again. I still don't know what the issue is, but I do know what causes it.
    When I plug in an external monitor to the DVI port, the sreensaver disregards any mouse movements on the the extended display, and goes into screensaver mode. If I disconnect the monitor the computer continues to act as it does when the monitor is plugged in. What I've done to remedy this is use the laptop in clamshell mode, disable the screensaver, then disconnect the monitor.
    This seems to remedy the problem. Hope this helps anybody else with similar issues.
    PS External is Samsung 930b 19" (for what its worth)
    Thanks for your help.

  • ATV 2.4 update screen saver issue?

    I've been with Apple TV since the first month it appeared on earth and have been very happy about it. Right now I own three of them. The feature I always use is to listen to the streaming music and watch all my photo floating on the screen. Since this recent 2.4 update, I think there's a bug involving this. If I turn on the ATV and use it right away, screen saver would turn my TV blank, not a slide show. Anyone got this issue? It's already on my two out of three ATV. And, without opening ATV and remove the HDD, is there any way to step beack to 2.31?
    Thanks
    WK

    Like many others, I'm also having problems with the screen saver after the 2.4 update. Normally I use the "slideshow" screensaver option with music playing. Since the 2.4 update, this screensaver option works for maybe 2-3 minutes, then it begins cycling through pictures quickly and the ATV becomes completely unresponsive and requires reboot. Not good. The other screensaver option, the one with the cascading pictures, doesn't work well either (lots of blank screen with occasional bouts of pictures).
    I have to say, I'm very disappointed with this update ... doesn't Apple test this stuff? It's a pretty basic function of the device, and I can't believe it's not well tested before the software is released.
    If anyone figures out a workaround, other than turning off the screensaver, I'd love to hear it.

  • System preferences freezes whenever try to change screen saver settings

    When I try to change the screen saver settings in the system preferences, it locks up and I have to force quit. Is this a graphics issue? Anyone else having this issue? It looks like my computer is having problems processing the screen saver previews. I have the new Macbook Pro Unibody (June 2009).
    Any help would be awesome, thanks!

    Edit/add to the above: I just realised that the iLife Support update had (supposedly) already been installed -- it's listed in the updates in the system preferences, but not with today's date (which fixed the issue), but with the date when I got the MBP. Strange. A bug in the update? Not installed completely? Didn't get any error messages though. Anyway, all's well now

  • IMac Freezes Periodically During Screen Saver Only

    I own a late-2006 Intel-based iMac. Over the last few months, I've noticed that the iMac freezes when the screen saver is running. This doesn't happen all the time, and it doesn't matter what screen saver I use. (None of the screen savers is a third-party.) The iMac doesn't freeze at any other time.
    Any ideas?
    - Keith
    P.S. I'm running Snow Leopard right now, and it happens even with Snow Leopard, just as it did with plain ol' Leopard.

    Your iMac has a dedicated Graphic's chip (GPU), while some of the Late 2006 17" iMacs had a GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM that shared with the main memory. To check which Graphic's chip you have go to: Apple > About This Mac > More Info and in the Hardware section select Graphics/Display.
    If you would like to monitor the temperature of your GPU, CPU, HD and Memory check out the iStat Pro widget > http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
    The main reason I suspect the lack of RAM over an overheating GPU is because you only reported a problem with the Screen Saver and not with other intense graphic's like movies, videos or games.
    Please let us know how you make out with the RAM upgrade.

  • Can't activate password-protected screen saver

    I use my MacBook for sensitive data, so I always make sure to "lock" my screen with a password-protected screen saver when I walk away from my desk. Normally, there are several ways to do this:
    1. Wait for the screen saver to come on due to inactivity.
    2. Set a "hot corner" for the screen saver and move the mouse to that corner.
    3. Enable the keychain menu bar icon and choose "Lock Screen" from the menu bar. (This is my preferred method.)
    Under normal conditions, any of these three methods will activate the screen saver.
    However, sometimes when I've been running my computer for a while (several days) without rebooting, all three of these methods simultaneously *stop working*. The "lock screen" menu option does nothing, the screen saver hot corner does nothing, and the computer fails to activate the screen saver on its own after the predefined period of inactivity.
    Oddly, I can still activate the screen saver by using the "Test" button in the screen saver preferences pane, but in that case it's not password protected, so that doesn't help.
    A reboot solves the problem, but this usually happens when I have a bunch of stuff open and it's not a convenient time to reboot. Plus, after a reboot, the problem still recurs a few days later.
    I'm not the only one with this problem. Many others have reported the same behavior:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6124716
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1391053
    A few of those users found workarounds, but they seemed to be experiencing something different from what I'm describing here. Those who were describing the same symptoms I am still don't seem to have found a solution.
    Incidentally, I am not running Spaces or Parallels, nor am I using an external monitor, all of which have been suspected in other threads as the culprit. Quitting all open apps doesn't seem to help either.
    The issue seems to be limited to one account at a time; if I switch into another account while having this problem, the other account won't have problems starting its screen saver, but switching back doesn't resolve the issue for the first account. A reboot does.
    Can anyone shed some light on this or offer another workaround? Or is this just an ongoing bug?

    This happened to me again the other day. Any suggestions?

  • Screen saver - help

    Is anyone else having the problem of their screen saver activating even though the "Start screen saver" is set to "never" in the system prefs. I'm currently running under 10.4.6. This phenomina has just started occuring with 3 different screen saver applications (MatrixGL ver 2.0, Plasma Tunnel ver 1.2.3 and Fracture ver 1.1.1) over the last month.
    Suggestions?
    William

    I am also having the same problem. Only on one system of 4. On the same system the preferences for Final Cut pro are also not being saved. eg. window layout does not save when quit from Final cut and then load it again, window layout is back to default.
    2 x G5 (10.4.6)
    2 x G4 (10.4.6) (only 1 G4 doing both of these problems)

  • Turning off the Screen Saver on a SWF that is set to continuously loop

    We have a CP5 project set on a computer for continuous play but we are having problems because the screen saver will come on.  Is there any advanced action or steps we can take to keep the screen saver from coming on.

    Hi Susan
    I think you will find the simplest solution is to just disable the screen saver on the PC as well as any power saving features.
    Cheers... Rick
